Accent

It’s difficult to make clear distinc-tions between US and UK accentswhen there is such a wide varietyof accents within both the US andUK. A Texan and a New Yorkerare both Americans, but have verydifferent accents. The same goesfor British accents in London,Manchester and Glasgow. Howe-ver, some very general distinc-tions can be made. Americansusually pronounce every “r” ina word, while the British tend toonly pronounce the “r” when it’sthe first letter of a word.

Grammar: prepositions.

The differences below are onlya general rule. American speechhas influenced Britain via popculture, and vice versa. Therefore,

some prepositional differences arenot as pronounced as they oncewere..

NEWS: THIS & THAT ...

Long time ago, in February a ca-terpillar wanted to find a true lo-ve. Suddenly, on Valentine's Daya cupid came to him and advisedhim how to fall in love. He toldhim that girls like roses, gifts andsweets. The next day the caterpil-lar met a ladybug. His heart star-ted to beat faster, he realised thathe should have a date with her.He listened to the cupid and wentto the shop to buy a bunch of redroses. He gave her all the presentsand invited her to spend some ti-me together. Two days later theywent to the restaurant. At dusk, inthe shine of the moon they hug-ged and kissed. From that daythey were in love and they lived

long and happily.

A long, long time ago liveda stubborn and long caterpillar.her name was Collinella. Her lifewas peaceful and calm but it wasone thing which drove her crazy -it was Valentine's day. Every Fe-bruary is full of gifts, sweets, redroses and secret admirers. More-over, there are lots of Valentinecards and awful red colour every-where. Too much love! But therewas one happy fact - the fifteenthof February - the day of singles. Why did Collinella hate Valenti-ne's so much? Few years earlier

she fell in unrequited love. OnValentine's Day she felt bad allday while everyone was happy, hugging and kissing. Collinelladidn't believe in true love so eve-ry time she saw a couple she wassad. While walking down thestreet she fell over and hit herhead on the pavement where ano-ther caterpillar was resting. It waslove at first sight. Few years laterthey got married and lived happi-ly ever after.

1. HangiLet’s start with the traditional Maori hangi! This isinvolves meat and vegetables slow-cooked in anunderground oven. Although it was a commoncooking method for thousands of years in NewZealand, today a hangi is saved for more specialoccasions (mainly because it takes all day toprepare! ) Prepare to be overfed but extremelysatisfied at hangi meals as part of Maori culturalexperiences.

2. CrayfishCrayfish, also known as lobster, is a Kiwi favouritemostly because it something many fishermen anddivers pride on catching themselves. Known to costNZ$80 for a full crayfish, it’s not exactly the mostaffordable food, but it’s definitely worth a try whenthe opportunity presents itself! Then you’llunderstand why Kiwis go cray cray for crayfish!

3. KinaOk, New Zealanders love their seafood so we’ll justhop straight onto another foodie delight from theocean. Kina is the local name for a type of seaurchin with a hard spiky outer shell and thin fleshy(and edible) insides. It has been a New Zealanddelicacy for centuries!

4. Kiwi BurgerYou’ll either think it’s weird or it’s genius! Whatmakes a “Kiwi burger” Kiwi is the fact it hasbeetroot and fried egg along with your standardburger patties and whatever else between twoburger buns. Don’t knock it until you try it!

ENJOY YOUR MEAL! FOOD IN NEW ZEALANDNew Zealand is worldfamous for it’s culinary delights, but there are certainly some meals, snacks, desserts and even drinks that Kiwi are extremely proud to claim as their own.As a country with around 14,000km of coastline, it comes as no surprise that seafood isespecially a favourite among Kiwis with a wealth of shellfish and fish.

Page 12: J E D Y N K APismo Dzieci i Młodzieży SP w Zawoi Centrum Nr 6/02/2018 Februar/ February J E D Y N K A It’s time to go green. St. Patrick’s Day is coming soon

5. JaffasRolling onto the sweet stuff, Jaffas are a confectio-nery favourite among New Zealanders. So much sothat they race them! Jaffas are small sugar-coatedchocolate balls with an orange flavour to them.

6. PavlovaAsk an Australian and they will swear that Oz in-vented the pavlova. Ask a Kiwi and they will tellyou different. Either way, pavlova is a much-loveddesert in New Zealand made with meringue, whip-ped cream and fruit. Try making some yourself forChristmas in New Zealand! .

7. L&PWe’ll sneak a beverage on this list just because it’svery proudly Kiwi. L&P stands for “Lemon & Pa-eroa” named after the North Island town it was in-vented in. It is as common as any soft drink in New

Zealand, tasting a bit more lemony and sweet thanSprite.

8. Whitebait frittersDon’t visit the West Coast of the South Island wi-thout trying whitebait fritters. It’s considered a sinin New Zealand! Whitebait is a collective term forimmature fish, usually around one to two incheslong. You’ll see heaps of keen “whitebaiters” settingup temporary shacks and jetties along the river mo-uths of the West Coast, catching fish for the localeateries to make whitebait fritters. Think of them asa fishy omelette.

9. Manuka HoneyA highly sought-after honey on the internationalmarkets, manuka honey is acclaimed for its medici-nal purposes. The more pure the manuka componentof the honey is, the healthy (and more expensive) itis. There are plenty of opportunities to try this sweettreat around New Zealand, from supermarkets todedicated honey shops.

10. Kumara

Kumara isn’t just a sweet potato; it is an epic sweetpotato. Kumara were brought to New Zealand bythe early Maori settlers and still remain a favouritevegetable in New Zealand. The best way to try ku-mara is in a hangi (see above), but there are heapsof ways you can incorporate kumara into your owncooking in your hostel kitchen.

11. PauaA final seafood delicacy that we just couldn’t igno-re, paua is the local name for a large sea snail. You

can eat paua in a variety ofways from plain old rawto curries to paua fritters. What’s more, paua shells are the national choice ofash tray for all you smokers out there!Alternatively, paua shells are oftenused in New Zealand jewellery andother decorative souvenirs.

BreakfastA typical New Zealand breakfastconsists of cereal and some toastwhich is accompanied by a cup ofcoffee, tea or a glass of juice or milk.Sometimes on the weekend there istime for a cooked breakfast. Thiscooked breakfast can also bebought/eaten at cafés most mornings.

A typical cooked breakfast has scrambled egg, bacon, cooked tomatoes, mushrooms, hash brownsand baked beans.

LunchLunch is normally something simple and not tooheavy since dinner is the main meal of the day. It isquite common just to have some sandwiches or hotpies for lunch though some people enjoy thehealthier salads and fruit. Sometimes NewZealanders have a "Sunday Lunch" with consists of

roast beef (or some other meat)and roast potatoes, pumpkins allslowly cooked in the oven.DinnerDinner is the main meal of theday and is eaten around 6pm. Itnormally contains meat andcooked vegetables, especiallypotato.
