“Friendship, Truth & Love”
In the spirit of the Holiday Season, utilizing the benefits of our “IUOM Community Benevolent Fund Inc.” the Independent United Order of Mechanics distributed two hundred and fifty (250) turkeys to the needy within the communities, surrounding the World Headquarters, located at 65 Putnam Avenue, Brooklyn, New York.
This holiday project received the blessings of the Executive Committee of Grand Council under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Clive Oscar Sang, and was organized and supervised by Rt. Hon. Glenver Jones, Executive Grand Treasurer of the Order, assisted by Rt. Hon. Cecilio Leacock, Executive Grand Recorder; and the Community Liaison Officer, Sis. Hyacinth Robinson-Goldson.
Despite the cold weather, recipients and residents from the community came out to collect their “Holiday Treat”. The distribution was done in an orderly fashion, through coupons which were allocated to churches, community organizations, a Day Care Center and elected officials for distribution to their members and constituents, prior to the event.
Other Executive Grand Councilors in the persons of Rt. Hon. Ricardo Hazlewood, Rt. Hon. Norman Newman, Rt. Hon. Francesco E. Bethune, Rt. Hon. Leighton Dingwall, Rt. Hon. Glen Dale, and District Grand Masters: Neville Reid, and Brenton Pusey, along with sisters Shirley Carmino, Ricci Migette, Elvie Gibbon and Bro. Cecil Wint, assisted with the distribution.
“This is a very good gesture from the Order to the community especially at this time of the year” commented Dr. Una Clarke, former City Council Member, who collected the allotted turkey on behalf of Congresswoman Yvette Clarke for needy residents and constituents of the 9th Congressional District in Brooklyn.
Letters of commendation and thank-you have since been received by the Order, from the various recipients.

From the Desk of the Editor
Rt. Hon. Walter L. Benjamin
Grand Deputy Master
The purpose of the IUOM Newsletter is to collect, collate and
publish information from all District Grand Jurisdictions
within the worldwide community of the Independent United
Order of Mechanics.
Information gathering is done mainly through electronic
medium such as e-mail, fax, text and other electronic
capabilities.
As Editor and Director of the Public Relations Committee, the
goal is to publish at least two editions per annum, and to
ensure equal representation of all Districts worldwide.
The Newsletter remain a viable means of communication and
information sharing throughout the Independent United Order
of Mechanics, our families, friends and the local communities;
and although information gathering seems challenging at
times, members of the committee work very hard to ensure
that deadlines and compliances are met.
Currently, the cost associated with printing is borne solely by
charitable donations, and a few advertisers. We encourage
members of the Order especially those with businesses, to
participate as advertisers in the Newsletter. This will give
readers the opportunity to know of your business, and to lend
their support by purchasing your goods and services.
We welcome any feedback and encourage our readers to
contact us with any suggestions or comments. Please contact

2015 St. John’s Day Message
Rt. Hon Clive Oscar Sang Most Worshipful Grand Master
The Grand Council of the Independent United Order
of Mechanics, Friendly Society, of North, Central, and
South America, Island of the Seas, and the Entire
Western Hemisphere Inc.
Fraternal Greetings!
Brothers and Sisters as we celebrate the life of our Patron
Saint, St. John the Baptist, let me extend to you and your
family best wishes on behalf of myself and the Members
of the Executive Committee of Grand Council.
Today is quite a special day for us as members of this
noble Order, as we gather and participate in Church
services throughout the Diaspora.
John the Baptist was the precursor or forerunner of Jesus
Christ, and a man of Faith with great determination to
fulfill the duty that was allotted to him.
He persistently went around preaching the message of the
coming of the Messiah, “The true Light, which
enlightens everyone was coming into the world. He
was in the world, and the world came into being
through him; yet the world did not know him.” John
1:9-10.
On a daily basis, regardless of the trials and tribulations
faced by St. John the Baptist, he persistently continued to
fight against the odds and to pave the way for the coming
of Christ our Savior.
According to the scriptural sources, John was a reforming
zealot. He preached an imminent catastrophe of divine
punishment; he castigated hypocrisy, demanded
repentance, and announced the imminent coming of the
Messiah. Many of the elements of John's doctrine
resemble some teachings of the Qumran sectaries as
noted in the Dead Sea Scrolls, particularly his anti-
establishment attitude, his insistence on imminent divine
punishment for sinners, and his preaching of a kingdom
of God that would soon be established. John furthermore
insisted that all who repented of their sins should come to
him and go through a rite of washing or baptizing; hence
he was called the Baptist.
In humility, John the Baptist dedicated his life to the
service of others, providing a source of repentance and
forgiveness. His baptism proclaimed a cleansing, a
renewal, and a new beginning, as he pointed to the
coming of the true Messiah, refusing to accept the
accolades which were being conferred on him. His
outspokenness may have cost him his earthly life, but his
faithfulness, service and righteousness secured for him
eternal life.
As Mechanics, let us emulate the life of our Patron Saint
by being more determined to walk in the path of
righteousness, to be more tolerant, kind and caring to our
Brothers and Sisters. We proclaim Friendship, Truth and
Love as our motto, let us now commit to live up to these
tenets, and in so doing, be the best examples to others.
May God bless us all, as we celebrate our Annual St.
John’s Day, and may His righteousness sustain us, as we
continue in faithfulness and service to show His love for
one another. God’s Richest Blessings!
Fraternally,
Clive Oscar Sang

Installation Address from:
Hon. Anderson L. Shorey Rt. Worshipful District Grand Master
Barbados, Dominica & St. Vincent
District Grand Lodge #1
Mr. Master of Ceremony, Venerable Past Grand Masters,
Members of the Head Table, Barbados District Grand Lodge
Officers, Specially Invited Guest(s), Brethren of the Craft,
Ladies and Gentlemen Good Night.
Our young men are in crisis.
Already this week I am sure that many of you would have been
engaged in the panel discussion put on by this Organization on
the topic “Parenting and DNA Testing” on Wednesday
evening at the NUPW auditorium. I am also sure that arising
from the discussion you would have realized that many of our
men, particularly the young men are being marginalized in the
Society and are in crisis.
More and more far too many of our young men are finding
themselves on the fringes of society and are engaged in
deviancy in its many forms, including being involved in
criminal behavior such as robbing and stealing and illicit drug
peddling and consumption. Our young men are finding it more
and more difficult to fit into a society that is progressing at a
rapid rate.
If you look around you will see that many of them are dropping
out of school early, abusing drugs and being involved in violent
confrontation. Indeed, every other week some young man is
being sought by the police for questioning in connection with
some serious criminal matter. Everyday there they are in the
newspapers and on television charged with some offence or the
other. I am sure you too would have noticed with some alarm
the age group of these young offenders which ranges from 16 to
40 plus years.
It has apparently become glamorous to be a thug, an outlaw.
The young men parade around the streets, trousers below their
buttocks, the vilest profanities emanate from their mouths while
smoking their spliffs in the open despite the fact it is an illegal
substance. They curse and abuse their mothers, sisters and
women in general. They exercise little or no respect for
teachers, the police or any other persons exercising authority
over them.
In the Nation newspaper dated August 24th 2013 the Minister of
Social care the Hon. Stephen Blackett is reported as saying “the
impression that men are in crisis and are being marginalized can
be misleading and has a negative impact on young people” he is
reported further as saying “the belief that most men were
troubled was generated by current public discourse. It is
unfortunate that there are those males in the minority who fall
prey to crime, drugs, laziness and weaknesses”.
There you have it folk, a Minister of Government who holds
this view which runs counter to what so many of us have
observed and experienced. His view and I quote from the said
article “I however am not a proponent that all men are in crisis”
What seems to be lost on the Honorable Minister is that nobody
is saying that all men are in crisis but the fact certainly should
not escape him that far too many of our young men are destined
to amount to nothing as they have no formal education worth
speaking of and no learned skills other than choking and
robbing perhaps and dope peddling.
I wonder if the Honorable Minister is saying that the situation is
an acceptable situation for as he puts it, it is only a minority of
males who fall prey to crime, drugs, laziness and weaknesses.
So I ask the question, what amount is an acceptable amount to
lose 100, 1000 or maybe 2000 of our young men? I often
wonder how we could have reached this stage. One need only
look back some twenty years or more ago when this level of
deviancy was not in existence. Young men competed against
each other to see who was best at academics or at sports.
Perhaps its peer pressure or maybe its despair that women and
girls are beating them in almost every sphere of endeavor, that
has them where there are now.
Just a short while ago men were the top achievers in this
Country, they sought careers in law, politics, in the armed
forces. They were top sportsmen, teachers, Doctors, good
family men who were active in church and gave back to their
community. Of course they were the odd dropouts and
miscreants but certainly not on the scale and level that is evident
today. Nowadays the police force and the army are lamenting
the lack of and the quality of recruits. More and more women
are seeking to join the ranks of these two Organizations to the
extent that that a cap has been put on the number that can now
be recruited.
The teaching service also is crying out that men are not coming
forward to teach and to be role models to young impressionable
males. Even fraternal organizations such as our own are finding
it very difficult to attract young men to their roll while more and
more females are applying for and gaining membership.
Our Sister Chapter has more than doubled its roll in the last year
alone whilst their male counterparts at the same time were
struggling to initiate even a single new member.
So how can we as an Organization and as individuals make a
difference? That is the question. Have we done or are we doing
enough in our Society to help these young men? Should we
6 | P a g e IUOM NEWSLETTER Volume 1I
Issue I
Summer 2015 IUOM Newsletter
feign indifference and turn up our noses like the Levite and pass
by on the other side? Perhaps you know someone from your
District that you might be able to have a word with. Sometimes
just showing that you care can make the difference in
someone’s life. Perhaps offering a helping hand or some word
of encouragement can change a life.
Our Organization is at a critical stage of its existence due to a
lack of membership. Without young men joining our ranks we
will find ourselves with an ageing membership in all our
Lodges similar to our Dominica Unit Caribbean Pearl Lodge
#11 and will find it difficult to continue in existence.
Many I am sure will argue against getting involved. There may
be merit to this point of view, but how can we as fine
upstanding citizens of this Country stand by and watch nigh a
whole generation of young men become lost forever as non-
productive members of this Society.
The onus is on us as brothers, sisters, parents, neighbors, and
friends to these young men, and as fraternalists to make a
difference. If each one of us can save at least one young man
from a life of despair we would have made a difference. Let us
act now before the situation gets any worse.
My brothers and sisters the challenge is thrown out to you
tonight to introduce these young men to the Order. The
Challenge goes out to you to make as many new male members
as you can. At the same time let us so Order and live our lives
as mechanics that they will want to be among us and a part of
us.
My Brothers, Sisters, Ladies and Gentlemen I thank you and
may God bless us all.

Ben Hur District Grand Lodge #1
On November 8, 2014, Hon. Albert John, Venerable Past Grand Master, was installed into office as Rt. Worshipful District Grand Master of the Ben Hur District Grand Jurisdiction (New York). The ceremony was conducted by members of the various Colleges of Past Grand Masters from District Grand Jurisdictions in the New York Metropolitan area, under the leadership of Ven. Ronald Blake, Patriarch of the College of Past Grand Masters, of the Ben Hur District Grand Jurisdiction. Below is an excerpt from his address to the large gathering at the elaborate Installation Banquet which followed in the Main Hall of the Mechanics World Headquarters: “In my message to the members of the District, I thank the Great Geometrician for sparing my life to see this special day; I also thank the
members for electing me as their Grand Master. My wife and children who were present to celebrate with me this special day, I thanked them for their support over the years but especially the past three years during my illness and I love them dearly. To my members I reminded them that not because I am the Grand Master that the District belongs to me alone, but it’s all of us District, with the support and participation we can grow from strength to strength. I also told them that the theme for my administration is “Rebuilding and Training” and “United we stand, Divided we fall.”

In order to have a strong solidarity with the community,
Sis. Peterson reached out to Ms. Ruby Scott (a strong and
dedicated community leader) as the community liaison
between the Ben Hur District Grand Jurisdiction and
Community School Council.
As a progressive person, Mrs. Scott contacted Professor
Abdullah, a Music teacher at NYC Public School No. 3
and the school Governing Body. With the agreement of
the above mentioned, Mr. Abdullah has continue to bring
students from Public School No. 3 who has delighted the
gathering year after year with their performances.
In addition to the children sharing their talents, we have
the participation of a clown who paints the youth faces
and makes designs with balloons and Santa Claus, who
gives out presents to the children. The children of the
community and members of the Ben Hur Grand

Over the many years, this Christmas celebration has
grown by God’s grace to approximately 200 children or
more in attendance.

Free turkeys for the holidays By Nelson A. King
Reprint of article from CARIBBEAN LIFE Newspaper (NYC) – December 27, 2014
http://caribbeanlifenews.com/stories/2014/12/2014-12-23-nk-brooklynmechanics-cl_2014_12.html
_______________________________ In keeping with its objectives of assisting “those pure and lofty principles, which are in the interest of humanity,” the Brooklyn-based Independent United Order of Mechanics, Friendly Society, Western Hemisphere, Inc. on Saturday provided free turkeys for the holidays to members of the community.
According to Jamaican-born Glenver Jones, Grand treasurer, the Order’s Charitable Foundation arm distributed 360 turkeys to community residents outside the Order’s Bedford-Stuyvesant headquarters at 65-67 Putnam Ave., Brooklyn. “The reception was excellent,” Jones, who is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Business and Technology at La Guardia Community College, Long Is. City, Queens, told Caribbean Life in an interview, as a crowd gathered around a truck where the “goodies” were distributed. “We anticipated a large turn-out because of the work we do in the community,” added Jones, disclosing that recipients, who presented coupons in order to redeem their turkeys, were notified primarily through area churches, day care centers and block associations. He said the Order purchased the turkeys for $10,000, and that they were distributed between 1:00 and 4:00
pm on Saturday. Jones said it was the first time that the Order launched such event on a “macro level,” adding that the fraternity hopes to make it an annual affair. “We want the (wider) community to be aware of our function within the community,” he said, adding that the organization also wants the city to be “aware of the Independent United Order of Mechanics.” Throughout the year, the Order offers assistance to others by, among other things, providing scholarships to high school students, hosting a community Thanksgiving Luncheon on Thanksgiving Day and conducting a toy drive during the Christmas season. The Order, which was established in 1757, with headquarters in Lancashire in England, was later incorporated, with head office in New York City. Jones said the Order – with branches in Europe, Central America and the Caribbean – has a youth sector in which “boys and girls between the ages of eight and 18 can join.”
Grand Treasurer Glenver Jones The Adult section is referred to as lodge (for males) and chapter (for females), Jones said. “The Order is open to men and women of reputable character; integrity; law-abiding; and, first and foremost, must

believe in a true and living God,” he said. Jones said he was grateful to Panamanian-born Councillor Cecileo Leacock and Jamaican-born Sis. Hyacinth Robinson for working with him on the “Turkey Project.” He also expressed gratitude to other members of the fraternity for their support and cooperation, including Grand Master Jamaican-born Clive Ascar Sang, the executive committee, the district grand masters, and the “brothers and sisters who assisted with the program today (Saturday).”

Bro. Egbert Fisher, P.I.G., S.K. Loyal Perryman Lodge #3/P.I.G. Conclave/St. Mark’s Grand Christian Encampment
Under the jurisdiction of
ALPHA DISTRICT GRAND LODGE #1, INC. (NY)
Bro. Egbert Fisher, PIG, SK
& Mrs. Fisher
It was a cold winter evening, yet Bro. Egbert
Fisher and Mrs. Fisher were up and alert to
entertain and greet the writer at their beautiful
home in Bronx, New York.
Bro. Fisher is one of the oldest member within the
jurisdiction of Alpha District Grand Lodge #1,
Inc. New York. He is a member of the Loyal
Perryman Lodge #3, where he was initiated over
fifty years ago.
Throughout the years, Bro. Fisher has been
involved in all aspects of his lodge and the
District, “I just wanted to be a good brother” he
said, looking back fondly with much nostalgia.
“There were evenings when I had to rush home
from work, just to make sure I cook the rice and
peas, the Curry Goat and Chicken to make sure he
take it to Lodge” said Mrs. Fisher. She fondly
recalled and spoke about the early days of her
involvement and support of Bro Fisher in all his
lodge activities.
Bro. Fisher is 90 years old and has been a member
of the Order for over 50 years! How did you miss
the Most Worshipful 50th Award Ceremony asked
the Reporter? “I don’t know” he said, maybe the
Grand Lodge forgot to mention me? “He smiled” I
was never interested in going to the Grand Lodge,
I just wanted to be a good brothers and to serve”
His message to Mechanics Worldwide is: “Just be
a good Brother or a Good Sister. If something is
wrong, speak to your Brother about it and not
behind his back, and in the end, everyone will live
in peace and harmony”
Although his memory is not as sharp as it used to
be, Bro. Fisher recalled that he served in various
offices in Loyal Perryman Lodge, the Alpha
District Past Illustrative Grand Conclave, and St.
Mark’s Grand Christian Encampment.
He now retires in the comfort of his home in the
Bronx, attended with loving care by his dear wife
and daughter for a number of years. His parting
words were: “Thanks to Bro. Ferguson who is
always here” [Hon. Hewlette Ferguson – is the
District Grand Junior deacon of Alpha District
Grand Lodge #1, NY] “and thank you for
remembering me” to which he raised his glass in a
toast to the Order!

thank you all for being here and we are honoured by your
support and presence.
We would like you to know, that what We practice here, are
Love, Brotherhood and Charity. Our mantra is the
Brotherhood of man and the Fatherhood of God. The three
principal tenets on which we live and operate is Faith, Hope
and Charity, which admonish us to have faith in God, hope in
immortality, and charity to all mankind. The greatest of these
is charity; charity extends beyond the grave, through the
boundless realms of eternity.
Our love for each other is deeper than that which you find in
the church. Mechanism teaches us never to stab each other
but to be the protector of our brothers.
This is what we as Mechanics are all about. You will not find
such charity in your Churches. If what we practice appeals to
you, friends! we invite all who are not yet initiated, to hasten
and join us now. Applications forms are available you can
obtain it from any of us before you leave.
In closing, we as Grand Officers again wish to impart these
words with you. Whatever you do, do it to the best of your
ability
Strive for excellence. It’s not perfect until you perfect it.
You are limited by your thinking. You are strong as your
will. You are weakened by your fear. You are directed by
your vision. You are driven by your purpose. You achieve
by your plans. You overcome by your faith. You are what
you think. Therefore, be your best.
We shall continue to strive to do our best and will work
towards the total success of this Order. Our goal is to make
Mechanism the great and noble Order envisioned.
Thank you all for coming and may God bless you all.

In Loving Memory TRIBUTE TO THE LATE
Ven. Joseph Newton Beckles, PGM, Grand Patriarch
Jamaica Eastern District Grand Lodge #4
The Ven. Joseph Newton Beckles belong to an elite
group of Veteran Mechanics, who dedicated their lives
to the growth and development of Mechanism in the
lodge, the District and indeed throughout Jamaica. The
career of this distinguished member of the Order began
in the year 1960 when he was made a member of the
Loyal Giscombe Lodge #16 at Galloway Road,
Kingston, the former address of the lodge. There he
received intense training and development from able
craftsmen on a timely basis with all his craft degrees
including the Master conferred on him. He served as
Illustrative Grand in 1964. At that time, also, his lodge
was under the Jurisdiction of the Jamaica District
Grand Lodge #2. He was appointed a District Grand
Steward in 1977.
The Jamaica Eastern District Grand Lodge #4 was
inaugurated soon after in 1978 and he became Grand
Senior Deacon. He therefore had the distinction of
serving two district grand jurisdictions. In the honored
traditions of the Order, the reward for hard work is
more work and so he was soon called on to serve as
Grand Deputy Master thus placing him in line for
leadership in the Oriental Chair.
In 1982, he was crowned Grand Master of the #4
District. He continued distinguished service and was
later awarded the Past Grand Master degree which
elevated him to membership of the College of Past
Grand Masters of that Grand Jurisdiction. He went on
to serve that august body as Venerable Grand Patriarch
until his death in 2014. He was recipient of many
awards for his fraternal service of excellence including
one for fifty years outstanding membership of the
Order.
In many discussions with the Venerable Grand
Patriarch, he reveled that he was named Joseph
Newton. The name Joseph, according to him, was that
of the earthly father of Jesus, nurturing the child Jesus
and caring for his mother Mary. In like manner, Joseph
our venerable Patriarch cared for his family, loved his
lodge house and served the Mechanics fraternity at the
senior level with dignity and pride.
Additionally, he would say, “my name is Newton –
Newton is the father of modern science”.
Accordingly, he was a noted lecturer in the Arts and
Sciences of Mechanism. Many of those privileged to be
his students will remember his constant admonitions:
“We must study metaphysics, the foundation of
philosophy, which helps us with an explanation of the
world around us, so that we may deal with reality. We
must study the craft because of it applications from the
Holy Bible to the member’s path to Mechanism. We
must study the conceptions of the Order to understand
the science of life. We must understand Mechanism; it
is one of God’s greatest gifts to mankind.”
Those who visited him or listened to his discourses,
benefited from his vast experience in the craftsmanship
of the Order. His utterances demonstrated a
commendable keenness on the teachings of
Mechanism, and with continuity of this work in mind,
he handed over his lecture notes to an appreciative
understudy with the words, “I know this will be in
good hands; please continue my work”.

Illustrative Matron in 1988 and continues to be a loyal
member of that chapter.
Ven. Beckles became ill in the later years of his life
and came under medical treatment. Although he was
not as active in the fraternity as was usual, his learned
advice was available as a senior member of the Order
to many members who visited and consulted with him.
He was a devout Anglican and an outstanding
churchman. At his funeral service, he was lauded for
contribution to his church. He was regarded as fully
prepared for his spiritual transition. He is sadly missed
by his family and the Jurisdiction he served, and will
be remembered for his sterling contributions to
Mechanism.
As we say fond fairwell to this Distinguished Brother,
may the Great Geometrician of the Universe receive
and keep him and Light Perpetual shine upon him.
