Code of Conduct A safe and inviting climate is important to us at Ituna School. We believe that everyone has a right to feel safe and comfortable working and interacting in this environment. To nurture this climate, everyone in the school environment can and must make a difference in the overall life of everyone who attends and works at our school. This belief includes being safe from aggressive behaviours such as bullying, threats, physical abuse and harassment.

As much as possible, we believe that: Discipline needs to be a process of instruction that teaches the attitude, knowledge, and

skills necessary for individuals to develop self-control; Consequences need to be related to expected behaviours, be logical and natural in

nature; Classroom rules and consequences may be unique for every class, but consistent with

expected behavior for the whole school; The development of self-discipline and responsible behaviour is our desired goal.

As a whole school, staff have the following expectations: Observe standards of cleanliness, tidiness, and deportment Show courtesy and consideration for others’:

o Personal spaceo Propertyo Feelings

Attend school regularly and arrive on time for class Have supplies ready for learning Be diligent in their studies Meet expectations of the classroom and school

Disciplinary ProceduresStudents are reminded that they are responsible to the principal from the time they leave for school to the time they get home from school, and are responsible to any staff member at anytime anywhere on the school premises. Inappropriate behaviour can result in a wide range of consequences that may be applied, depending on the severity of the incident and the frequency of the behaviour. Effective discipline also hinges on the cooperative efforts between home and school. We try to involve parents as early as possible without calling home every time a student misbehaves.

Ituna School is using a three-level approach to discipline.

Level 1 Level 1 behaviours include:

o Non-directed swearingo Using mean or hurtful words towards others

6

Page 7: Ituna School student handbook€¦ · Web viewA safe and inviting climate is important to us at Ituna School. We believe that everyone has a right to feel safe and comfortable working

o Inappropriate phone useo Non-compliance/defiance

Level 1 disciplineo Student will be given up to 3 verbal warnings to correct the behaviour.o After verbal warnings, staff will fill out a behaviour slip.o After 5 behaviour slips in one month, a team meeting will take place to develop a

behaviour plan. The team will consist of the principal, classroom teacher, student, and learning resource teacher.

o If the student is still struggling with the behaviour after a plan has been implemented, a parent meeting will take place to further discuss options.

Level 2 Level 2 behaviours include:

o Unexcused absenceso Directed swearingo Leaving school property without permission

Town students going home for lunch are not included in this Level 2 discipline

o Behaviour will be noted on a behaviour slip.o After 3 slips or more in a month, a team meeting will take place to develop a

behaviour plan. The team will consist of the principal, classroom teacher, student, parent and learning resource teacher.

o If the student is still struggling with the behaviour after a plan has been implemented, another team meeting will take place to further discuss options.

Level 3 Level 3 behaviours include:

o Possession of alcohol/tobacco/vaping products/being under the influence of these substances

o Possession of drugs/being under the influence of drugso Trafficking drugs or alcoholo Assault or serious aggressive behaviouro Possession or use of a weapono Abuse of school authorityo Gross misconduct as deemed by the principal

Level 3 disciplineo Zero tolerance for these level behaviours.o Parent will be contacted. Team meeting will take place to discuss consequences.

The team will consist of the principal, classroom teacher, student, parent, learning resource teacher, and possibly division office staff.

o Division procedures will be followed, including VTRA policies. Division office will be contacted.

7

Page 8: Ituna School student handbook€¦ · Web viewA safe and inviting climate is important to us at Ituna School. We believe that everyone has a right to feel safe and comfortable working

o Student will be subject to an out-of-school suspension with the possibility of other consequences being applied for permission is granted to return to school.

Academic Integrity PolicyThe Horizon School Division believes that assessment must be fair, transparent, curriculum based and accountable. To meet these objectives, Ituna School has created the following policy that will direct our assessment practices at school.

Definitions: Plagiarism - the unacknowledged use of someone else’s words, ideas or creations as

one’s own whether deliberate or accidental. This includes copying a passage word for word from a source and not citing the source, copying and pasting from the internet and not documenting sources.

Academic Integrity – evidence of taking responsibility for one’s own learning through the demonstration of honesty, trust and respect.

Cheating – presenting as your own the work of another. Examples of cheating may include any of the following:

o Copying answers during an exam or using “cheat sheets” to complete an exam.o Using programmed technology to complete an exam or assignment unless

permitted by the teacher.o File sharing or copying files from another student.o Copying assignments from another studento Buying papers from the internet or resubmitting previously graded work.

Duties of students: Students are expected to take responsibility for all assigned work. Plagiarism or cheating on any assignments or tests in any way is unacceptable. Students must complete mandatory assignments.

Duties of Teachers: Teachers will clearly identify assignments that are mandatory. Teachers will clearly outline at the start of the school year or semester the penalty for

late assignments and timelines for any loss of marks. Teachers will clearly outline at the start of the school year the consequences for

cheating. Teachers will adapt or modify assessment instruments based on the identified needs of

students. Marks received from adapted or modified assignments will be clearly indicated on report cards.

Teachers will give timely feedback on assessment instruments and regularly update marks on Maplewood ConnectEd.

Duties of Administration:

8

Page 9: Ituna School student handbook€¦ · Web viewA safe and inviting climate is important to us at Ituna School. We believe that everyone has a right to feel safe and comfortable working

Clearly articulate school policy to teachers and the parent community through school handbook and the school’s website.

Administer mark reporting for students with “incomplete” or “no credit standing” status.

Enforce consequences of the academic integrity policy and provide support for remediation if necessary.

Consequences and remediation: Assignments deemed by the teacher to be plagiarized to a significant degree will be

redone for a maximum 50% of the final mark during an agreed on after school session with the teacher.

Assignments or tests that were completed through cheating will be redone for partial or no marks as laid out by the teacher.

Assignments will be expected to be submitted to the teacher on or before the due date. Arrangements for extensions may be made with the teacher. Students unable to hand in an assignment due to excusable absences will hand the assignment in for full marks upon return to school.

Late assignments may be docked marks on a daily basis up to and eventually including the full value of the assignment as set out by the classroom teacher. Late assignments or assessments that are a result of inexcusable absences may be docked marks as laid out by the teacher.

Students may receive an “incomplete” or “no credit standing” in the class until the assignments are completed.

Tests missed due to excusable absences will be written upon return to school. Special arrangements may be made with the teacher.

In the case of a dispute over graded assessments, students and/or their parents can appeal to the teacher first, and then follow up with the principal if necessary

AttendanceStudent’s RoleRegular attendance and punctuality are an essential part of every student’s obligation and commitment to be successful in school, “pupils shall attend regularly and punctually” (SEC.150 (3)(a) Education Act). As it is our desire to see all students succeed, all students are expected to attend all classes each and every day. Regular attendance and promptness are necessary for the continuity of instruction and for the effectiveness of continuous evaluation. Students are also to “be diligent in his or her studies” (SEC.150(3)(d) Education Act) and are responsible for all work that is missed.

Parent’s Role“Every parent, guardian, or other person having charge of a pupil who is of compulsory school age shall take the steps that are necessary to ensure regular attendance of that pupil. Every pupil shall attend school regularly and shall promptly provide the principal such information as may be required… with respect to any absences from school.” (SEC.156 Education Act)

9

It is understood that an absence from school may be necessary from time to time. However, when a parent gives permission for an absence for sickness or any other circumstances which the family considers to be sufficient, the parent also assumes responsibility for results of absences, such as lower or failing grades, or a much-increased homework load, action by the staff.

School’s RoleWe believe it is the school’s responsibility to work with each student and his/her family to ensure that the student receives the best education possible, and we understand that positive attendance habits allow us to ensure the success of the student. Therefore, in instances where attendance has been identified as a problem we will attempt to improve the student’s attendance with the following possible interventions: teacher phone calls home, letters sent home, HIP program, attendance contracts, counselor interventions, and in-school suspensions.

Unavoidable Absence Reasons: illness medical treatment court compassionate school sponsored or extra-curricular activities bus delays or cancellations harvest

If your child is absent, please do the following: Parents are asked to telephone the school office each time a student is absent, in

advance if possible. If a student is absent in K - 12 and no contact is made by the parents (guardians), attempts will be made to contact the parents. Students have 5 school days from the date of the absence to have them excused. A student who is eighteen years old before the start of the semester may excuse their own absences. Skipping class is defined as leaving the school during school hours for no excusable reason.

o School authorized activities shall be recorded as excused absences from class.o Students must sign out at the school office if leaving school during the day and

must sign into the office if returning to school during school hours.

Due to Covid-19 procedures, if a student is absent and the parent has not contacted the school, we will contact the parent/guardian immediately to ensure safety of the student.

LatesStudents are expected to be punctual for class at all times. Consequences for late behaviours include but are not limited to:

Buzz office (using intercom at main door). Mrs. Kutas will let the student in and note the time of arrival.

10

After 3 lates in a week, a phone call home will be made by the student’s teacher out of concern for the student’s success.

If 4 or more phone calls are made in a month, the principal will arrange a parent support meeting with Student Services.

Students who are late for more than half of the class are considered absent. It will be documented as unexcused unless parent contact is made with the school.

Dress CodeStudents in grades K-12 are required to dress in a neat, classy, professional, and clean fashion. Any clothing with inappropriate language or pictures, or exposes undergarments are not allowed. Students will be warned once of offending clothing, asked to cover appropriately, and may be sent home if non-compliance continues. Parents may be asked to pick up confiscated clothing articles. Appropriate headwear will only be allowed in the classroom at the teacher’s discretion.

Masks are mandatory in grades 4-12 when physical distancing of 2 metres is unable to be achieved. Masks are also required in all common areas of the school, including the hallways and bathrooms. Any student refusing to wear a mask will be sent home (unless they have medical documentation).

FeesStudents are charged fees for various reasons:

Kindergarten students’ fees are $15 to cover the cost of their school supplies; Grades 1-6 students’ fees are $30 to cover the cost of their school supplies; Students taking PAA classes may be assessed a fee to cover certain costs of the

program, as outlined by the PAA teacher.

General AssembliesA general assembly is called the first day of school to discuss new procedures for the year. Other general assemblies may be held throughout the year. General assemblies are held to develop communication between the school and the students and present information pertinent to the education of the children.

Our first day of school assembly will take place virtually this year, so COVID-19 procedures can be followed.

Cell phones will be confiscated if used inappropriately.

Textbooks/School-Loaned BooksEach issued textbook or loaned article is marked with a barcode, the date when issued and the condition noted. A record of the student’s loans and conditions are taken by the classroom teacher and retained in the library. The student receives the loaned article through the library at the beginning of each semester and returns it to the library at semester end.

If a textbook or loaned article is lost or destroyed, replacement cost must be paid before another article is issued. If the article is found, money paid in restitution will be reimbursed. Courses are considered to be complete and final marks will be issued when all textbooks and loaned articles have been returned at the end of a school term or the replacement cost of the textbook or article has been submitted to the office.

15

Page 16: Ituna School student handbook€¦ · Web viewA safe and inviting climate is important to us at Ituna School. We believe that everyone has a right to feel safe and comfortable working

It is our philosophy as coaches that we would like to have our teams travel together as a group in order to develop team spirit, collaboration, culture and the list goes on but most importantly is the safety aspect of having everyone in one vehicle versus many. However, we also understand that in cases an individual may want to travel with a parent or students may drive themselves to events with signed permission from their parents, but cannot drive any other students. If this is the case, written/verbal notification must be given at least 24 hours before the event to the coach or the principal. This requirement is necessary for the safety of our students, your children, so that we know where everyone is at all times and with who.

Our Extra-Curricular VisionThe following principles guide extra-curricular programming at Ituna School so we can run quality programs at our school.

A program will be developed that involves the commitment of time and energy from both coaches and athletes.

A quality program will be measured by its pursuit of excellence and the desire of all participants to improve.

The program will be a source of pride in our school for students, teachers, coaches and the community.

Students participating in extra-curricular programs must maintain a 50% standing in their current term mark and cooperate in class and the school.

Program outcomes will include skill development, team/group spirit and enjoyment for all

participants. A program cannot be offered without the leadership of an individual with the time, skills

and commitment necessary to run a quality program.

Programs that cannot meet these criteria will not be offered at school.

Division IV Credit RequirementsThe Ituna School Community Council policy states that students in grade ten are required to take ten credit hours of instruction per year. A student in grade eleven is required to take a minimum of nine credit hours of instruction per year, with at least four credit hours in each semester. A student in grade twelve is required to take a minimum of eight credit hours of instruction per year. Special arrangements may be made with the principal.

Graduation RequirementsA minimum of 24 credits is required to graduate, 5 of which must be at the grade 12 level. Courses can be regular (10,20, 30), or modified (11,21,31). In order to participate in Graduation Ceremonies, students in Grade 12 must be in the process of completing at least

Students need to be sure to check post-secondary programs for grade 12 course entrance requirements for programs they wish to pursue after grade 12. Many high school courses have prerequisite courses, so advanced planning in grade 10 is essential so the proper courses are completed in grade 12. See your career coach or school principal for answers to many questions.

SRC ExpectationsAll students interested in holding any position on the Student Representative Council must meet and maintain the following expectations: Student representatives will:

Maintain an appropriate level of academic standing in school subjects. Demonstrate and display a respectful attitude towards staff and students. This requires

a mature level of behaviour in the classroom, the school in general and at any school related function.

Regularly attend all academic classes, intramural activities and SRC functions. Executive members are expected to participate fully in the business of meetings and work to involve all room representatives and house leaders in SRC business and responsibilities.

17

Internet & Computer UseThe internet offers vast, diverse and unique resources to students, teachers and parents. Our goal is to provide educational experiences by facilitating sharing, innovation and communication.

With access to computers and people all over the world also comes the availability of material that may not be considered of educational value in the context of a school setting. On a global network, it is impossible to restrict access to all controversial materials. We at Ituna School believe that the valuable information and interaction available on this worldwide web far outweighs the possibility that users may accidentally procure material that is inconsistent with the educational goals of the school. The following rules for computer use are a part of the Horizon School Division’s wider Computer Use Policy. Wilful violations of acceptable use policy may result in suspension of the privilege to use this educational tool.
