Did you know we have 4 types of

membership at 2 churches at once? FULL MEMBER: A full or part-time resident desiring to join the United Methodist Church by Profession of Christian Faith, or by Transfer of Membership from another United Method-ist Church, or a church of another denomination.

AFFILIATE MEMBER: A membership available to a member of The United Methodist Church residing temporarily for an ex-tended period of time, in a community distant from his or her home church. Such a membership does NOT affect your membership in your home church. This is a perfect option for our snow-birds who are already United Methodists.

I can’t believe that 2020 is actually ending. I know it’s a huge under-statement, but this has been a very challenging year! However, with all of its difficulties, 2020 has been surprisingly full of opportunities to reflect on all the amazing blessings God has given us, particularly the

gift of His Son, Jesus Christ.

Recently, I was a part of a group conversation where someone asked us what we learned from 2020. One very wise person spoke up and said, “I learned that before 2020 I took for granted simply attending church in person and participating in the many activities that our church offered. Now I can’t wait to simply worship together again in person." What a great point!

One of my favorite Christmas movies is the 1946 classic “It’s A

Wonderful Life” featuring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed. In the movie an angel (Clarence) is sent from heaven to help a des-perate and frustrated businessman (George Bailey) by showing him what life would have been like if he had never existed. In many ways I believe 2020 has given all of us an opportunity to reflect on the gift of life.

My hope is that as this year ends we have learned a great deal when it comes to God’s blessings. I am consistently reminded of the joy of knowing that God is with us through all of it. I am also reminded of how awesome it is being a part of this community of faith we call Saint Andrew By-The-Sea.

I pray that the new year brings with it opportunities for all of us to grow closer with each other. It truly is a “wonderful life” sharing it with all of our church family and I can’t wait to be a part of the mission and ministry of this community in 2021.

    Missions – Sharing God’s Grace Soup Kitchen’s

    New Food

    Distribution

Karen Kirby and Tom Sharp of the SABTS Soup Kitchen

spoke with our church’s Missions and Outreach Committee at the committee’s November Zoom meeting about their opera-tion changes due to the increased need during the pandemic. They also discussed their new expanded food distribution in partnership with Deep Well.

Before the pandemic, Karen said the Soup Kitchen was serving 30 to 50 people each Friday a sit-down lunch. However now, with a higher need, she said they are serving 80 to 100 people a bagged lunch. Tom said that their head chef is Scott Allen, own-er of Scott’s Fish Market Restaurant. He also said the Soup Kitchen receives one meal per month from a restaurant or a foundation. Additionally, Tom said that pandemic precautions, such as having only four people in the kitchen at a time, have been necessary.

The Soup Kitchen’s grocery table of foods for people to take home after the Friday lunch has also expanded in a big way to be a larger food distribution partnership with Deep Well. Karen said they discovered that many of the people eating lunch on Friday were also on Deep Well’s food distribution list.

Due to the vision and energy of Allan LaCoe, the Soup Kitchen has now become a food distri-bution partner for Deep Well, providing food for 35 south-end families each week repre-senting about 145 individual family members. The food is delivered on Tuesdays by Soup Kitchen volunteers to families at the Cordillo and Woodhaven apartment complexes, and the church is a delivery location.

Every week each family receives a General food bag, and a Breakfast bag or a Pasta bag. The bags are designed to provide food for a family of four. Hand sanitizer and masks are also be-ing distributed.

On a continuing basis, Karen said Deep Well is providing 80 per-cent of this food, and the rest is provided by church members and a Soup Kitchen Memorial Fund. Church members originally contributed 70 bags of groceries for this effort, she said. Also, Dunes Realty makes a major truck load contribution once a year. Altogether, SABTS is now actively providing over 500 weekly meals to our south island neighbors.

Additionally, church members Laurel and Chuck Greif, owners of The Cookery in The Village at Wexford, gave any shopper 10% off during the holiday season when the shopper donated canned or boxed food at the store to benefit the SABTS Soup Kitchen’s food distribution efforts.

Despite the restrictions due to Covid-19, the 9th Annual Christmas Grace was held on December 12. Through your generosity, a brighter Christmas for 70 families and over 200

children was provided. Most families were identified through Hardeeville Elementary School, and a number of additional families came through St. Stephens UMC, First Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Antioch Educational Center, and a few Bluffton families.

In addition to toys and gift cards, families received grocery vouchers provided by Backpack Buddies, wrapping paper, a bag of personal items for moms, and teddy bears (donated by our church members at Teddy Bear Sunday).

Pastor Daniel Burbage and Pastor Erik Garcia, Apostolic Church of the Faith in Jesus Christ, personally gave families a copy of a Bilingual New Testament and a Bilin-gual Beginner’s Bible.

Bridge Builders chaired Christmas Grace this year and we want to thank our many

volunteers dedicated to having Christmas Grace during this extraordinary year. A special thank you to past chairs, Sue and Ken Kroupa, for their invaluable guidance and support , our SABTS staff who assisted in so

many tasks; to Coastal Carolina Hospital who provided space for the event; and, so many others who pitched in to make Christmas Grace happen.

Advent Celebration. Thank you to all who worked so hard

to bring the event to life, especially the Rosene family and the youth

group who strung the lights! It snowed, we heard the Christmas story, brass

played, We sang carols and even some angels and shepherds showed up.
