difficult to see the silver lining in
the clouds overhead. Joy comes in these times when we pause to look
back —we see other times in our lives when we faced difficulties and drew from a strength within that
brought us through—we think of others who stood beside us & bol-stered our courage or
provided a listening ear.
Living
in a community such as
ours is a good place to find joy—there is
security in friends and caregivers who are always close by. There are continual opportuni-
ties to participate in meaningful activity—and sometimes just fun & fri-
volity—that help us real-ize “just how good things
really are.” We at Encore are happy that you chose us, and we are Thankful
for you! Happy Thanksgiving!
“Joy is what happens to us when
we allow ourselves to recognize how good
things really
are.”
This quote
by Marianne Williamson reminds us
that it really is up to us to choose joy. The sentiments on an old
embroidered sampler say it in yet
another way:
“An attitude of gratitude brings
happiness to the heart.”
Sometimes our circumstances are
anything but joy-producing. It is in those trying times that we can challenge ourselves to look for the
little blessings in each day, like socks that aren't wrinkled, or cold water when we’re thirsty, or a
warm smile from
someone passing by.
Change can bring apprehension into our lives, making it
It is not happy people who are Thankful. It is Thankful people who are happy.

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. ~Melody Beattie

HERE’S TO YOUR HEALTH!
Peggy Reece
Kitchen Cabinet or Medicine Cabinet Many foods that we enjoy are considered anti-inflammatory. Wild Alaskan salmon, dark leafy greens and blueberries are at the top of the list, followed by tea, fermented foods such as sauerkraut, and fresh garlic. Ginger quells a queasy tummy; cinnamon may have a beneficial affect on glycemic control (blood sugar levels). The wonder spice, turmeric, is has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can improve brain function, alleviate depression, and re-duce joint pain.
And take heart, literally—besides all the fish and veggies you should eat to improve your health, a little red wine and chocolate are not only good for the disposition, they can be good for your heart because of the flavanols that help with blood pressure and cholesterol.
Sometimes the old, simpler remedies are the best, so have your chicken soup & stay well!
Our thoughts turn to food in the fall. Face it. Fall harvest brings thoughts of baking—then the assault of the Halloween candy—-how much of it can you resist?—then the secret family recipe for that turkey stuffing, the gravy & fluffy mashed potatoes, & more pie—and then we start with the Krumkake & lefse & rum balls & green bean casserole to get us through to the end of the year! Oh, then we have traditional foods to bring in the New Year, not to mention the champagne.
Is there hope for our good health in the fall & winter months when we are tempted to find our comfort in food? The answer is YES, and it’s right there in your kitchen, alongside the Oreos and the Jiffy Pop.
There are so many “super-foods” in your kitchen cabinets, foods that destroy bacteria and reduce inflammation, the two main enemies of our health. Inflammation is linked to heart disease, Alzheimer’s, cancer, depression, excess weight, and arthritis.
