Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the ESCRS Board I am delighted to welcome you to Istanbul for the 15th ESCRS Winter Meeting. This is the first time that an ESCRS meeting has taken place in Turkey and we are delighted to be joining with our colleagues from the Turkish Ophthalmological Society, Cataract and Refractive Society Division, for our first event together.
Over the past several years we have been developing the ESCRS Winter Meeting by extending our didactic programme. This programme now includes didactic courses in Basic Optics, Cataract, Refractive and Cornea. We hope these courses will offer a valuable opportunity for Residents and those in training to gain a deeper understanding of the basics in the different sub-specialties.
The Programme Committee has planned a full scientific programme over the course of the Meeting which includes four symposia, live surgery, free paper sessions and eposter presentations. There is also a broad range of surgical skills training courses scheduled throughout the three days. The Annual Cornea Day on Friday has been co-organised by the ESCRS and EuCornea, and we would like to thank EuCornea for their support and participation in the Meeting.
I am also delighted to report that the Middle East Africa Council of Ophthalmology (MEACO) has co-organised with the ESCRS the Saturday symposium ‘Cataract Surgery in the Diseased Eye’, and we would like to thank them for their input and participation.
We would also like to thank Bekir Sitki Aslan and his colleagues in Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty Eye Clinic for their organization of the live surgery session on Saturday afternoon.
I am delighted to announce that in the coming year ESCRS will be supporting the work of two charities in Africa. Clean water and sanitation facilities are basic requirements for life and the charity Oxfam is known for its expertise in this area. ESCRS will be supporting a project to bring clean, safe drinking water to the people in the Kitgum district of Uganda. Ethiopia has one of the highest blindness prevalence rates in the world and we will also be supporting an ORBIS project to develop paediatric eye care in the north-west region of this country. Further information, and updates on these projects, will be available on the ESCRS website and we would be very grateful for your support for this initiative.
I look forward to meeting you over the coming days and hope you enjoy your time in Istanbul.
Yours sincerely,
Josep GüellPresident, ESCRS

EBO and Accredited Courses
Courses with EBO accreditation: Basic Optics Course, Refractive Surgery Didactic Course, Cataract Surgery Didactic Course, Cornea Didactic Course.
The harmonisation of European education in ophthalmology is one of the task forces of the European Board of Ophthalmology (EBO) and is promoted by the EU to increase mobility of healthcare practitioners within Europe. The European Network of Education for Trainees (ENET) is an EBO initiative proposing a teaching programme for European residents by building a European network of teachers and teaching programmes proposed by different national and international scientific societies covering all subspecialties in ophthalmology.
The European Board of Ophthalmology Diploma (EBOD) examination is a test of excellence in ophthalmology. It is designed to assess the knowledge and clinical skills requisite to the delivery of a high standard of ophthalmic care both in hospitals and in independent clinical practices.
The EBOD examination is voluntary in most countries of the European Union. However, some countries have replaced their own National Specialist Examination by the EBOD examination. The successful candidate may add the title Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO) after his or her name. Attendance at the above courses may be beneficial to those planning on taking the EBOD examination.
For further information on the EBO and EBOD please go to ebo-online.org

Basic PhacoemulsificationThis course will provide practical experience in removing a cataractous lens. Hands-on experience in phacoemulsification, incision/CCC and lens insertion will be provided.
This course will have one participant at each station
Basic Suturing TechniquesThis course will teach basic suturing techniques for ophthalmic surgery. Participants will have the opportunity to learn suturing techniques both with and without an operating microscope.
This course will have one participant at each station
Bimanual Micro-Incision PhacoThis course will familiarise the participants with new techniques of micro-incision surgery with IOLs implanted through incisions of less than 2 mm.The wetlab will include practice on new ‘cool’ phaco equipment.
This course will have one participant at each station
Ferrara Rings, KeraRings and INTACSThese courses look at the different types of intracorneal rings, the indications for use, particularly keratoconus, and the different techniques for implantation. The latest nomograms will be presented and discussed.
This course will have two participants at each station
LASIK (Laser In Situ Keratomileusis)This course will familiarise ophthalmologists with the assembly and use of various microkeratomes used to create a corneal flap, with special attention to surgical techniques and management of complications. A variety of microkeratomes and excimer lasers will be available for use by the participants. Each participant will have the opportunity to create corneal flaps and perform excimer laser ablations.
This course will have two participants at each station
Phaco: Management of ComplicationsThis course includes practice various techniques discussed in the didactic course, including management of white cataract with Trypan Blue and insertion of intracapsular rings. Also included are the various advanced phaco techniques such as vertical chop, phaco slice, stop and chop and hemi-flip.
This course will have one participant at each station
Phakic IOLsThese courses will allow the participants the opportunity to handle different phakic IOLs and practise several implantation techniques. Phakic IOLs presented include PRL, Artisan and Verisyse.
This course will have one participant at each station
PRK, LASEK & Epi-LASIKThis course will enable the participants to practise various techniques for handling and removing the corneal epithelium. Individual instruction will be given in the use of blade, brush and alcohol, as these tools are applied in PRK to abrade the epithelium prior to excimer treatment. The management of the epithelial flap, which is created in the LASEK procedure, will also be elucidated. The newest refractive procedure, Epi-LASIK, in which a flap is prepared by separating the epithelium from Bowman’s membrane with a special keratome, will also be demonstrated. An excimer laser will be available for practising surface ablation on the abraded or flap-fashioned eyes.
This course will have two participants at each station

* 20/16 results delivered with excimer laser; clinical studies sent to the FDA via P930016 supplement 021.
Laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) can only be performed by a trained ophthalmologist and for reduction or elimination of certain refractive errors indicated in the product
labeling. Laser refractive surgery is contraindicated for patients with collagen vascular, autoimmune, or immunodefi ciency diseases or abnormal corneal topography; and pregnant or
nursing women. Potential side effects may include glare, dry eye, or other visual anomalies.
iLASIK Can
...Deliver truly customized treatments that help you take more of your patients beyond 20/20vision.* Now you can bring this vision quality, that’s good enough for NASA, to your patients.
