December 5 is recognized by the United Nations as International Volunteer Day and used by number of organizations to promote volunteering and provide recognition to volunteers. The Scout Movement is one of the largest volunteering movement with over 10 million adult volunteers all over the world. The movement offers unique opportunities for long-term commitment to volunteering at local level with possibilities for non-Scouts to join NSOs in their respective countries. FOCUS ON NATIONAL SCOUT ORGANIZATIONS

Re-orientation of Scouting at the Base

No fewer than 500 Scouts and Leaders of the Lagos State Scout Council of The Scout Association of Nigeria gathered at the Apostolic Church Headquarters compound in Lagos (LAWNA) to celebrate 2nd All Eko Scouts Camp and the 13th Commissioners Scout Camp. The programs witnessed various Scouting activities like hiking, cycling, Messengers of Peace activities, citizenship and leadership education.

The theme of the event “Re-orientation of Scouting at the Base” focused on building a fresh base of younger Scouts in Nigeria and as a way of increasing its membership towards the attainment of WOSM Vision 2023 of creating 100 million young people as agents of positive changes within their immediate and external communities. The Scouts and Leaders present were also taken through the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and how Scouts can strive into making these goals work in their different environments. Kids Take over Africa Dialogues Conference to mark World Children’s Day

As part of the activities to mark this year’s World Children’s Day, children from 8 countries from West and Central Africa met in Accra to take over the “Africa Dialogues Conference”. On stage were 10 young people between the ages of 10-18 who told the world about the Africa they want.

Natasha Adu, 12 years old and a Ghanaian Scout spoke about the Africa she wants. Her talk was on the SDG’s placing emphasis on goals 3, 4, 6 and 13. On sanitation she said Africa should treat proper disposal of rubbish as a priority. Natasha spoke about how her Scout group came up with a creative, cost effective and innovative way of disposing rubbish. Dustbins were made from the yellow cooking oil gallons and distributed to all the classrooms in her school. The rubbish, mainly papers, which was generated from the classrooms was turned into paper marchè, moulded and painted into learning and teaching aids for the pre-school department of her school.

Natasha sees herself as assertive, confident and a leader, qualities she said Scouting instills in young people enabling them to become active global citizens. The program was a collaboration between UNICEF and People Initiative Foundation, Ghana. Read more at https://www.scout.org/node/397281

Peace in my Community

According to the first President of the Cote d’Ivoire who is credited as a crusader for peace, solidarity and reconciliation “peace is not an empty word but rather a behavior.” He established the National Day of Peace which is marked in the country annually on 15th day of November .

Christian and Muslim Scouts from St. Luke Banabakintu Parish of Adjame in Abidjan, held an event to mark this year’s National Day of Peace. With the national theme of “guaranteeing peace through participation of all in national security”, the event began with a interreligious mass attended by the Scouts. This was then followed by a series of games that served to enhance interreligious and intercultural awareness and tolerance. The day ended with a community clean up exercise. A total of 198 participants took part in this annual activity organized by the National Messengers of Peace team in Cote d’Ivoire. Read more at https://www.scout.org/node/395126

Children are Partners in Achieving SDGs

In support of the World Children’s Day celebrated on 20th November, the National Coordination of Scout Messengers of Peace through its member Chief Jean Élie organized an awareness day for Scouts. The Cubs and Scouts of the Diocese of Grand Bassam in Cote d’Ivoire came together to actively engage in an awareness campaign towards other children on understanding the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals. The event involved presentation of the Sustainable Development Goals and developing proposals and commitments to adopting simple actions to achieve the SDGs to create a better world.

In Benin, thanks to the efforts of Scouts and non-Scouts, 30 girls experienced the Sustainable Development Goals for the first time in Porto-Novo. They learnt a lot on the importance of the 17 SDGs, focusing on SDGs 4 and 5; as well as an understanding of the rights of the child, associative life and got introduced to Scouting. The children also took part in a creative drawing session to illustrate and share their dreams for a better world. The underprivileged girls of the OASIS household committed themselves to work daily for a sustainable world.

This was a way of involving children as partners in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. Catholic Church: Scouts of Abidjan Hills of the Cross say no to kidney failure

The Catholic Scouts of the Abidjan Hills Cross met at Saint Jacques des Deux Plateaux Parish to learn and make a formal commitment against kidney failure, a disease that is wreaking havoc in Côte d’Ivoire. This came during the 4th edition of the Gala Dinner of Excellence of the As-sociation of Catholic Scouts of the District of Abidjan Hills Crosses held on 14 November 2017.

The purpose of the charity gala dinner for people with kidney failure, was to promote excellence among District youth, collect hemodialysis kits, and raise funds to help children with diabetes. The best Scouts of the District of Abidjan Hills Cross were distinguished at the event. The participants were educated by a medical doctor on the methods of preventing renal failure. “Bacterial infections, viral infections, parasitic infections and hypertension when properly treated can help to prevent renal failure,” said the doctor.

Congolese Scouts of Ituri Province Undergo MONUSCO Sponsored Environmental Management Training

Between 10-11 November 2017, Scouts of Ituri Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo underwent an environmental management training that was facilitated by the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO). The training took place at the CAP/MAP Center in Bunia and was facilitated by the Deputy Head of the MONUSCO Environmental Protection Unit. The purpose of the training was to create environmental awareness among Scouts to enable them identify local environmental problems, propose local solutions and instill behavior change for the protection of the environment. Sustainable waste management, climate change and environmental technologies were key focus areas of the training. For the Ituri Scouts, this training was aimed at preparing them to develop and implement a major reforestation project in Chai.

At the end of the training, the young Scouts expressed their satisfaction and enthusiasm with the community service work carried out in cleaning the central market of Bunia. They were also impressed by the interventions and contributions during the training and wished to have such continuous training on other aspects of the environment. The Chairman of the District Scout Committee in his closing address promised that they will put into practice the theory learned and transfer the knowledge to their families and communities. He called upon the Minister for Youth to support them towards realization of their project in Chai. MONUSCO on the other hand promised to continue the collaboration with the Scouts and to support their projects.

Rovers Centenary (Rovering…your way and beyond)

Scouting started in 1907 by what we know now the Scout section. Few Years later, the younger section (Cub Scouts) started in 1916.

The thinking to establish senior sections didn’t take longer to happen. Rover Scouting life span is going to reach 100 years soon and thus we are proposing to celebrate its centenary in 2018. Read more at www.scout.org/rovers100

Report of the 13th World Scout Forum and 41st World Scout Conference

The Youth Forum and Conference served as a unique platform for displaying the strength of our Movement and our collective commitment to creating a better world. At the events, Youth Advisors and World Scout Committee members were elected, Resolutions and Amendments to the Constitution of WOSM were debated and voted on, and hosts were selected for future World Scout Events. Moreover, the growth of several NSOs was celebrated and a renewed commitment was made by all 169 NSOs to grow WOSM’s membership towards Vision 2023. The Conference also proved the unity of our expanding Movement by a 99% vote in support of the World Triennial Plan 2017-2020, a great testament in the direction WOSM is taking to reach Vision 2023. Read more about the outcomes of the 2017 Youth Forum and Conference in the report at https://www.scout.org/wsc2017
