CHRISTMAS PARADE UPDATE
Well, it’s two weeks to the big day and planning is well under way,
but it’s not too late to enter a float, stall or offer to help.
We are also holding a new local competition for Christmas: “THE BEST DRESSED HOUSE IN MGTO” So get out the Christmas decorations and let your imagina-tion run wild. There will be a 5km boundary for entries, for info or to enter give me a call.
There will also be a best dressed award on parade day; this is open to anyone not taking part in the parade.
We are also holding the best dressed win-dow/window display; this will be judged dur-ing the day and night.
The business floats this year have a theme:
“KIWIANA CHRISTMAS” The community floats have no set theme, so let your crea-tive juices flow.
I put out a challenge to every business owner, home owner and individual to make this years parade the biggest, best and most colourful yet!!! The time table for the parade day is:
2.00pm - stalls set up at the mgto four square 5.00pm - parade build up starts. 6.00pm - parade starts 7.00pm - prize giving and activities for the whole family at the Maungaturoto Country Club (see advertisement)
Please remember - no parking in town on the main street from 4:30pm onwards - the Maungaturoto Primary School grounds will be open for parking. I would also stress the need for common sense and patience - remember there will be lots of children running around, and traffic may be heavy and slow at times. Also there is, as always, a com-plete ban on water balloons and guns during the parade, save them for the summer holidays!!!. Any questions, queries, entries, offers of help and other general enquiries call
Terri on 4318 599 HEAPS TO DO, HEAPS OF GIVE-AWAYS, HEAPS OF FUN SATURDAY, DECEMBER 13TH - BE THERE!
Maungaturoto Wastewater Work has started on the upgrade to the treatment plant with an all- weather access road. The treated water holding pond should be complete before Christmas and then the Membrane Filter will be installed in the New Year. The treatment will bring the water quality to a level that can be safely discharged to the river and remain within the NRC consent. Maungaturoto Water Supply Council has been negotiating for some time with Fonterra to secure additional water sources to satisfy both the needs of Maungaturoto township and Fonterra. Agreement has been reached to utilise water from a large dam off Bald Rock Rd and negotiations on the pipeline route are pro-gressing with landowners. This supply will ensure security for many years. Ratepayers are not having to pay for this supply as the additional water is to satisfy Fonterra’s needs. Work should start on the pipeline in January. There have been some minor interruptions to supply re-cently due to work on the pipelines. Hopefully no-one has been inconvenienced. Councils contractors have re-branded as Downer Edi Water and their vehicles have KDC and Downer Edi logos. If you have any concerns please contact either myself or KDC help Desk 0800 727 059 Roading While it has been a frustrating few months with the disrup-tion to State Highway 12 Brynderwyn this work is almost complete. I know many have questioned the need for this work but NZ Transport Agency (formerly Transit) has as-sured council the benefits are worth the expense. In a few months we might have forgotten what the old road was like! NZTA have indicated they are spending a total of $10 mil-lion on the first 20km of State Highway 12. That’s almost to Paparoa! And not before time. By now the work on Golden Stairs/Causer Rd intersection should be completed. Also starting next year is sealing the first half of Bald Rock Rd from Highway 1. The remainder is programmed for the following year. Council Meetings Council has held a couple of workshops in Maungaturoto recently. The topics were aspects of the District Plan re-view. These are open to the public and some people have taken time to attend. I think it is good for councillors and staff to get out of Dargaville on occasion and we welcome public attendance at these meetings. They are advertised in local newspapers. Cr. Graham Taylor

The Northland interclub sevens tournament was held over the three days of Labour weekend. Maungaturoto entered a men’s team for the first time for many years. They placed second in the second division. Tuesday 28/Wednesday 29 October the first club champs were played when seven women, (the most for quite a few years) took part in the singles event. The first day four rounds of the two-life system were played with three play-ers each with one life surviving to play the next day. They were Margaret Powell, Naira Vaney and Helen Neville. On the second day Margaret beat Helen to progress through to the final which was won by Naira. Good to see two first-year players in Pauline McMurchy and Helen Neville taking part as both are playing good bowls and either could go on to win the Northland first-year title later in the season. Also good to see June McLeod back playing in the club. Friday 31 October the club ran its annual Kaipara district championship Trivial Pursuit evening. Eighteen teams of six took part, with a team called ‘Six of the Best’ consisting of Vern and Margaret Powell, John and Liz Saunders and Dave and Vicky Churcher coming through as the champi-ons. A very successful night for the club. November 1/2 was the weekend for the Mangawhai men’s two-day Calcutta tournament. We had two teams entered with one team getting two wins and the other team of Kevin Flower Lead, Terry McMahon Two, Ron McCallum Three and Kevin Robinson Skip came second losing to Colin (Wog) Wintle’s team by one point on the last end. There was no second prize but by buying themselves in the Cal-cutta they had a very successful weekend. Election weekend saw the playing of the men’s champion-ship pairs with six teams entering. Thanks to Ray Hynes and John Hammond who entered at the last minute, thereby eliminating a bye. After some very close fought games on the Saturday two teams were left. Ken Westlake and Ron McCallum with two lives and Kevin Robinson and Gerald Barnett with one life. Ken and Ron ran out the win-ners on the Sunday after one game of the maximum 18 ends with one life intact. Well done to Ted Mooney who played with first year player Irwin Van Pelt who only missed getting into the final on the Sunday by losing the last end on the Saturday. The weekend 15/16 saw the Centre open fours played. One of two men’s teams qualified to go on to the second day and was knocked out by a Kamo team first game in the morning. The women played their handicap singles on Wednesday 12 and finished on Sunday 15 with first-year player Helen Neville coming out the winner from Naira Vaney. The women held their junior singles on Tuesday 18 No-vember with four of the seven eligible taking part. Naira came out the winner from Helen with two lives intact.
Newbould a surprise winner of the girls’ Rod Dixon Mile
Cashmere High’s Hannah Newbould pulled off a surprise victory, drawing on her reserves and edging past Villa Maria’s Nicki McFadzien as the pair sprinted down the final straight of the girls’ Rod Dixon Mile at Otamatea High on the Saturday of Labour Weekend. Olivia Burne (Palmerston North Girls’ High) was a clear third after being handily placed for three-and-a-half of the four laps. World Secondary Schools Cross-Country Champion Esther Keown (Auckland Girl’s Grammar) finished a de-jected fourth after looking strong, tucked in behind the lead-ers for most of the race. At the Secondary Schools’ World Cross-Country Champi-onships, in the Czech Republic in April, Keown won two golds: one for her individual win and the other as a member of New Zealand’s winning team, along with Newbould in fourth place, McFadzien sixth and Burne twelfth. In the Rod Dixon Mile, Mahurangi College’s Kim Burke, a Year 10 student, ran well to gain fifth place, just behind the world champions and ahead of Hannah Farrow (Christchurch Girls’ High) and Ripley Dean (Otamatea High). Mount Roskill Grammar School’s Tadele Haimanot, who is coached by Olympic marathon bronze medallist Barry Magee, won the boys’ mile from Northland’s best, Ryan Smith (Whangarei Boys’ High). Otamatea High’s Trenton Powell dug deep to head off Whangarei Boys’ High’s Aaron Millar on the line, finishing a meritorious third in the talented field. Fifty-one year-old retired farmer, Ian Calder, who had been given a “special entry” into the race, finished fifth, with Dean Kingi coming home strongly in sixth place. Running the mile proved to be an excellent “sharpener” for Otamatea High’s road race four days later. Trenton Powell smashed the long-established boys’ record with Dean Kingi running an excellent third. And in the senior girls’ race, Ripley Dean came home strongly to take first place ahead of Samara Foster. World champion, Esther Keown, was gracious in her de-feat despite her disappointment, and texted the following message afterwards, “Thanks a lot – that was a shocking race for me but an awesome event – thanks so much.” Otamatea High and Athletics Whangarei thank the spon-sors. “A big thank you to the Skin and Vein Clinic, Whanga-rei, for the sponsorship that made it possible to bring the World Champions to OHS,” says organiser John Perry. “Thanks as well to Maungaturoto Pharmacy, Compass Computers, Dr Denise Limby, Smiths Sports Shoes, Sports Performance Massage, & Colin Smith’s Auto Services,”
