TIDBITS® SAYS HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO

NOVEMBER BABIESby Kathy Wolfe

Here’s a little research from Tidbits on all these folks, past and present, who claim November as their birth month. • Probably best known for her role as Dr. Izzie Stevens on the ABC medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy,” actress Katherine Heigl got her start as a child model posing for the Sears catalog. She moved on from this $75-per-hour job to her first commercial, a TV spot for Cheeri-os. At 15, it was her goal to become a concert pianist. Switching her college major to political science set the stage for many of her achievements. However, she has never abandoned her music, still practicing ev-ery day, and she even accompanied the celebrated cellist Yo-Yo Ma at Constitution Hall at a National Medal of Arts Awards recital.

NOVEMBER BABIES (continued):• Most folks have heard of the Hubble Space Telescope, an instrument carried into orbit by a 1990 space shuttle mission. But most don’t know that it was named for the American astronomer Edwin Hubble, the first to confirm the existence of galaxies other than our own Milky Way, a discov-ery made in 1923. A Rhodes Scholar, he studied law and set up a legal practice before realizing that his passion was astronomy. • Bo Jackson achieved fame as the first athlete to be named an All-Star in two major sports, baseball and football. His birth name was Vincent Edward Jackson, after his mother’s favorite television star, Vince Edwards of “Ben Casey” fame. Jackson achieved his nickname when his family described him as a “wild boar hog” constantly getting into trouble. He signed with baseball’s Kansas City Royals as a left fielder in 1986 and started play-ing for football’s Los Angeles Raiders as a running back the following year. • Goldie Hawn has a distinguished ancestor, Ed-ward Rutledge, the youngest signer of the Decla-ration of Independence. This famous blonde ac-tress is also an accomplished ballet dancer, having begun lessons at age three. At 11, she debuted in “The Nutcracker,” earning $1.50.• The only child of famous automaker Henry Ford was born in November 1893. Edsel Ford grew up to marry into the Hudson’s department store fam-ily and founded Ford’s Mercury division. He also brought us the Lincoln Zephyr and Lincoln Con-tinental. Fourteen years after Edsel’s early death from stomach cancer at age 49, the Ford Motor Company introduced its new brand of cars named after him. Unfortunately, the Edsel was considered a commercial failure and was discontinued after the 1960 models. • If you’ve seen any James Bond movies, you’ve heard the musical work of composer John Barry, who wrote the soundtracks for 11 of the films. The winner of five Academy Awards and four Gram-mys, he also composed the music for “Out of Af-rica” and “Dances with Wolves.” • That bump on November baby Owen Wilson’s nose is the result of having his nose broken twice, once in a high school fracas, the other in a friendly football game. Wilson is no stranger to mischief, having been expelled from high school as a sopho-more for cheating on his geometry test. He spent his junior and senior years in military school.

• Back in 1930, 18-year-old Leonard Slye packed up his belongings and moved to California, hop-ing to make it big as a singer. He played in several groups over the next few years — The Hollywood Hillbillies, Rocky Mountaineers, Texas Outlaws

Is Your Cat Bored?

Please call 303.663.2287 (CATS) for more information or visit www.catspecialist.com

We don’t think of our cats as “captive” animals, but in truth they are. Indoor-only cats are captive in our homes and can become bored, leading to “sickness behaviors.” How do you know your cat is bored? Inappropriate litterbox behaviors, aggression, decreased food or water intake, vomiting/diarrhea, lethargy and changes in general grooming CAN be signs of sickness behaviors due to the stress of captivity.

If your cat is experiencing any of these behaviors, Cat Specialist can help you determine whether they are due to a medical condition. If your cat is medically sound, we are always available to talk feline enrichment with you. From cat trees to toys, there are many different smells and sounds that can break up the kitty doldrums!

Why/d? – A New Diet (Y/d) for Hyperthyroidism

Sometimes it appears that the urge to put out a new product is motivated more by the marketing department that the researchers. A new diet to treat hyperthyroidism has been released with only a few small studies over a very limited time. No long term studies have been done to date and the number of patients followed has been few.

Hyperthyroidism in cats is usually caused by a benign tumor that over secretes thyroid hormones. The tumor grows slowly and secretes more and more thyroid hormone. The ‘gold standard’ treatment in all species is radio-iodine (I-131) which usually cures the disease. Surgery to remove the tumor(s) can cure 80% of hyperthyroid patients but involves risks of anesthesia and 20% of the patients need radio-iodine to finish the job.

Medical treatment and the new diet (Y/d) are ‘bandaid’ treatments that do nothing to treat the tumor – they affect the hormone or the hormone production. For a long term treatment these treatments are useful in only a small number of patients. The cost for these ‘bandaid’ treatments mounts up and can easily pay for radio-iodine 4 to 5 times over time.

So, how does Y/d work? Y/d has an extremely low level of iodine (the thyroid glands use the iodine to product thyroid hormones) so the product creates a lower production due to a deficiency of iodine. Historically, when a deficiency of iodine occurs in any species this causes goiter. Too little or too much iodine has been shown to cause thyroid cancer in some patients. Getting cats to eat only this diet may be the hardest challenge for this method of treatment. If the cat eats any other food, treats or supplements the value of the diet is void.

The conclusion that most veterinary specialists have come to: it is too early to assess whether this new diet will ever be effective. Again, with a cure for hyperthyroidism -- Why/d?

—before forming Sons of the Pioneers in 1934. The following year, he appeared in the first of his 100 movies. Along the way came a name change to Roy Rogers. He acquired his golden palomino Trigger in 1938 and was seen astride that horse in every single movie and television episode. (Trig-ger died at the ripe old age of 33 in 1965.) At the height of his career, Roy Rogers received more than 75,000 fan letters a month. • Back in 1968, clothing designer Calvin Klein, armed with $10,000, started out with just a coat shop in the York Hotel in New York City. Gradual-ly expanding over the next several years, he added the original designer jeans in 1974, using Brooke Shields as a model. He sold $200,000 worth during the first week after their introduction. • Baby boomers will recall the daily farewell mes-sage, “And that’s the way it is,” given by CBS anchorman Walter Cronkite as he wrapped up the television evening news. He started his broadcast-ing career on radio in 1937 and brought bulletins on World War II bombings and the Nuremberg trials. During his 19 years on the evening news, Cronkite reported the momentous events of Ameri-cans’ lives, including the death of Martin Luther King Jr., the Vietnam War, the Watergate scandal, the Iran hostage crisis and most notably, his emo-tional and tearful delivery of the news of the assas-sination of John F. Kennedy. He was the source for the news of the U.S. space program. Opinion polls named him “the most trusted man in America.” • It should come as no surprise that movie hunk Matthew McConaughey was listed in his Longview, Texas, yearbook as “most handsome.” He spent one year of high school as an exchange student in New South Wales, Australia.• The world’s first set of septuplets to survive in-fancy, Iowa’s McCaughey children, turn 14 this month. Born nine weeks early, the three girls and four boys consumed 42 bottles and required 52 dia-pers daily during their first several months. These days the family goes through seven dozen eggs and five gallons of milk every week. • Talent seems to run in the family of Kevin Eu-banks, former leader of the “Tonight Show” band. A classical pianist/organist mother and jazz pianist uncle no doubt contributed to Eubanks’ prowess, as well as two musical brothers, one a trombon-ist, the other a trumpeter. Eubanks is more than the jazz guitarist we see — He also plays trumpet and violin and has composed the scores for four feature films.

If you watched the movie Jurassic Park you probably know that amber is fossilized pine tree resin and that some amber have insects trapped inside. In the movie the scientists extract dinosaur DNA from a mosquito. It makes a good story but it does not comport with the geological history of the earth. A mosquito trapped in amber could not contain dinosaur DNA because most amber is too young. It’s only 25 to 50 million years old and the dinosaurs were supposed to have lived and died over 65 million years ago. But don’t let the unlikely story spoil your interest in this most unusual gemstone. The fact is more than 1,000 extinct species of insects have been identified in amber. Amber is mined today in the Baltic states and the Dominican Republic. Dominican Republic amber is older and is the preferred stone. Baltic amber is likely to have insect inclusions. But get this: amber prices can range from as little as $20 to as much as $40,000 or more.

Holiday Madness

You have kids to take care of, holiday meals to prepare, gifts to purchase and wrap, and company coming over! This time of year, the last thing you think about is getting your workouts in or preparing healthy meals! You say to yourself, “I’ll just wait it out and jump on the New Year’s resolution wagon with everyone else, right???”

As a trainer, I appreciate the extra income and clients every January and February, but honestly isn’t there a better way? I see many people who work hard all year long, then once November and December rolls around they completely sacrifice their personal health and fitness routines. “How can you take care of anyone else, if you don’t take care of yourself!” Here are some helpful tips which can help you stay fit during the time-pressured, temptation-packed, holiday season:

• Write your goals down on a piece of paper and post them in areas around the house where you’ll be constantly reminded! These can be fitness goals, but also other goals as well. If you’re consistently reminded, you’re much more likely to stick with your routines!

• Create a home workout routine if you can’t make it to the gym. Write down 5-6 exercises you can do at home e.g., push-ups, lunges, walking stairs, core/abdominal work, etc. Go through your exercises a few times a day. You’ll not only look better, but also feel better - and it will help increase your energy and reduce your stress!

• Work on your time management skills over the holidays. Organize your day the evening before. Prioritizing your tasks beforehand will help you make time to exercise and prepare your daily meals. Don’t procrastinate! Take time for a walk with someone.

• Hire a trainer to help get you through! Sometimes a little accountability is exactly what we need!

Feel free to contact us at [email protected] or www.straightupfitness.net with any questions.

Dental Check Ups Include Oral Cancer Screenings

When you go for your regular dental check up, your dentist and hygienist are also screening you for any signs of oral cancer. Every hour of every day, some-one dies of oral cancer in the United States. This seri-ous dental disease which pertains to the mouth, lips or throat is often highly curable if diagnosed and treated in the early stages. Vis-iting your dentist for regular check ups and avoiding tobacco are the key factors in pre-venting oral cancer.

Gum (Perio-dontal) Disease Affects Your Overall Health

Gum disease is one of the main causes of tooth loss in adults and has also been linked to heart disease and strokes. If diagnosed in the early stage, gingivitis can be treated and reversed. If treat-ment is not received, a more serious and advanced stage of gum disease, called Periodontitis, which in-cludes bone loss, may follow. Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and getting regular dental check ups and cleanings are the best prevention against gum disease.

Dental Cleanings and Check Ups are Extremely Important

Going to the dentist for regular check ups & cleanings is one of the most important factors in maintaining good oral health. Regular check ups can prevent cavi-ties, root canals, gum disease, oral cancer, and other dental conditions. Don’t wait until you have a problem before you see your dentist, help prevent problems be-fore they happen.

Here's Your Year-end Investment Checklist

As an investor, you’ve pretty much seen it all in 2011 — includ-ing slow-but-steady gains early in the year, a market correction dur-ing the debt ceiling debate and the U.S. credit downgrade, and huge one-day price movements, both up

and down — and there’s still a month to go. But despite the volatility of the past 11 months, you can make some positive year-end investment moves, including the fol-lowing:

Boost your 401(k) contributions. If your employer per-mits you to make extra contributions to your 401(k), put in as much as you can afford, up to contribution limits. You typically contribute pretax dollars, so the more you invest, the lower your taxable income. Plus, your earn-ings have the potential to grow on a tax-deferred basis. Consider converting to a Roth IRA. You might ben-efit by converting a traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA), which offers tax-deferred earnings, to a Roth IRA, whose earnings grow tax free, providing you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re at least age 59½ and you’ve held your account for five years. Keep in mind, though, that you’d need the money available to pay the taxes that would be due on such a conversion. Also, income limits apply to Roth IRA contributions. This is a complex decision that you should discuss with your qualified tax professional. Set up automatic contributions for 2012. Like most people, you may find it difficult to come up with a lump-sum payment to fully fund your IRA for the year. Why not set up an automatic investment plan for 2012? By directing your bank to transfer the same amount each month from your checking or savings account to your IRA, you’ll find it easier to “max out” on your IRA — and, at the same time, you’ll boost your investment dis-cipline. Contribute to a 529 plan. When you contribute to a 529 plan, your earnings have the potential to grow tax free, provided they are used for qualified higher educa-tion expenses. (However, 529 plan distributions not used for qualified expenses may be subject to income tax and a 10% penalty.) Furthermore, your 529 plan contribu-tions may be deductible from your state taxes. Discuss this with your tax professional. Re-evaluate your investment mix. It’s a good idea to review your investment mix at least once a year to help ensure your portfolio is still aligned with your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. Due to changes in market value, your portfolio can undergo subtle, but significant, changes — even if you took no action yourself. Conse-quently, take the time to review your holdings with your investment professional to help ensure you’re still “on track.” Review your insurance coverage. If you’ve experi-enced any changes in your life in 2011 — new spouse, new child, divorce, new job, etc. — you may need to review your life insurance coverage to make sure that it’s still sufficient for your needs and that you still have the correct beneficiaries in place.

To determine if any of these actions are right for your situation, consult with your financial advisor and quali-fied tax professional. By taking these and other steps, you can close out 2011 on a positive note and get 2012 off to a good start.

The Genesis PrincipleGenesis 1:26-29 (NLT) Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.” 27 So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.” 29 Then God said, “Look! I have given you every seed-bearing plant throughout the earth and all the fruit trees for your food. After God created man he told him three things, #1 I will bless you, #2 I am giving you dominion and authority, and #3 I am going to teach you the law of seed time and harvest. God knew that if man would understand the power of THE BLESSING on his life, the authority and dominion he has, and how to use seed time and harvest, he would live in total victory upon the earth! Man that sounds good to me, how about you? This is the Genesis principle by which God designed you and I to live and when we do, nothing can hold us back!THE BLESSING is an empowerment that comes from God that enables you to prosper and to succeed! This is Good News in the world in which we live to know that there is something on us that empowers us to be successful! So how do we apply and enact this in our life? It begins by speaking it out of your mouth, “You will also declare a thing, And it will be established for you;” Job 22:28 NKJ Start by speaking this out your mouth because your words have power. Death and life are in the power of the tongue…Prov. 18:21 NKJ Say this out loud with me will you?.... “THE BLESSING of God in on my life and THE BLESSING causes me to prosper!”We need to put a guard over what comes out of our mouths. This is the danger of watching the news all the time, and reading the newspaper and hanging around negative people, all that negativity begins to get inside of you and once it does, it begins to come out by what you speak. And when that happens it holds you captive and holds you back! Learn to speak positive things; learn to replace all the negative things of the world with the Word of God. If God has said he has blessed you then we need to agree with Him! Say it one more time with me will you? “THE BLESSING of God in on my life and THE BLESSING causes me to prosper!” Find a Bible believing church and attend this week!

On Dec. 18, 1620, the Mayflower docks at what today is Ply-mouth, Mass., and its passengers disembarked to begin their new settlement, Plymouth Colony. The winter of 1620-1621 was brutal, and by spring, only 52 of the original 102 Mayflower pas-sengers were still alive.

On Dec. 16, 1773, in Boston Harbor, a group of Massachusetts colonists disguised as Mohawk Indians board three British tea ships and dump 342 chests of tea into the harbor in protest of the British Parliament’s Tea Act of 1773. The value of the tea was more than $700,000 in today’s currency.

On Dec. 14, 1909, workers place the last of the 3.2 million 10-pound bricks that pave the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana. Since then, all but a 1-yard-wide strip at the start-finish line has been buried under asphalt. Kissing those bricks after a successful race remains a tradition among Indy drivers.

On Dec. 13, 1916, a powerful avalanche kills hundreds of Aus-trian soldiers in barracks near Italy’s Mount Marmolada. Over a period of several weeks, avalanches killed an estimated 10,000 Austrian and Italian soldiers.

On Dec. 17, 1961, a fire at a filled-to-capacity circus in Brazil kills more than 300 people and severely burns 500 more. The cause of the fire was never conclusively determined, but it may have been the result of sparks from a train passing nearby.

On Dec. 15, 1973, Jean Paul Getty III, the grandson of Ameri-can billionaire J. Paul Getty, is found alive near Naples, five months after his kidnapping by an Italian gang. Getty had ini-tially refused to pay his 16-year-old grandson’s $17 million ran-som, but finally agreed after the boy’s severed right ear was sent to a newspaper in Rome.

On Dec. 12, 1980, American oil tycoon Armand Hammer pays $5,126,000 at auction for a notebook containing writings by the legendary artist Leonardo da Vinci. The manuscript, writ-ten around 1508, contained 72 loose pages featuring some 300 notes and detailed drawings, all relating to the common theme of water and how it moved.

POOR GRANDMA

"The family wheeled Grandma's wheelchair out onto the lawn, where the activities for her 100th birthday were taking place. Grandma couldn't speak very well, but she would write notes when she needed to communicate.

After a short time out on the lawn, Grandma started leaning off to the right, so some family members grabbed her, straightened her up and stuffed pillows on her right. A short time later, she started leaning off to her left. The family grabbed her and stuffed pillows on her left.

Soon she started leaning forward, so the family members again grabbed her, and tied a pillowcase around her waist to hold her up. A grandson, who arrived late, came up to Grandma: 'Hi, Grandma, you're looking good! How are they treating you?' Grandma took out her little notepad and slowly wrote a note to the grandson that simply read:

'They won't let me fart !'"
