Welcome back to another half term at Maybury, it was a delightful sight to open up the gates on the first day back to some amazing home learning projects which had been constructed by Ants and Spiders. They made fantastic models of the Solar System and volcanoes and have proudly displayed these in the corridors! Well done Children!

Tuesday 7th February was Internet Safety Day, we were delighted to invite Ian McGraw the Surrey Safeguarding Lead Advisor to talk to parents about ways to keep children safe online. He talked about the fact that the internet is amazing, as children can play, learn, create and connect - opening up a whole world of exciting possibilities. But we must ensure children are safe whilst they are online.

Here are 4 key tips to help you: explore the online world together talk to your child about staying safe online manage the software and tools your family use agree rules about what’s ok and what’s not

You can find lots of information about Online Safety online at https://www.nspcc.org.uk/ https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents/ or our school website under ‘Staying Safe Online.’

During Internet Safety Week all children learnt about ways to stay safe online in class. Miss Frew also delivered an Online Safety assembly with a focus of the appropriate sharing of images, exploring how children and young people share images and videos online, from emojis to vlogs. Please ask your children about what they have been learning about and keep talking about ways to stay safe online.

I am delighted to see the number of children attending Moonbeams After School club has increased this term. The children really enjoy coming to this club and participate in a range of activities including craft, board games and computing opportunities as well as having a healthy afternoon snack. If you are interested in attending it is £8 for a session and half price for additional siblings if booked in advance. Please see Mrs Hill or the office for more infor-mation.

Finally a reminder for all parents to ensure they remain in the playground supervising their children until the teach-ers arrive in the playground at 8:45, this is to ensure the safeguarding of all children, which is paramount. If you wish to drop your child off at 8:15 they can attend Sunbeams Breakfast club and will be supervised by members of staff until they go into class at 8:45, the cost is £1 per morning. If children are not supervised we will not be able to continue opening the gates at 8:30 and allowing parents to wait in the playground before 8:40.

We had been looking forward to Rhyme Rocket coming to school for so long and when the time came it didn’t disappoint. The children thoroughly enjoyed being ‘Rhyme Recruits’ helping Professor Poet and First Officer Ditty to collect enough rhymes to fuel their rocket to zoom back to space. The children helped to match rhyming pairs in an amusing, interactive way. The children laughed so much and had lots of fun learning to rhyme.

Nursery

Nursery have been learning to use their senses to explore different textures, using new vocabulary to de-scribe what they could see and feel. They have also been celebrating the Chinese New Year and learnt how to do a Chinese Dragon Dance. Recently they have been learning about 2D shapes, how to describe their properties and having lots of fun using shapes to create a class picture.

Dragonflies

Dragonflies have been learning about

dinosaurs after they dug up a giant dinosaur egg in our sand pit outside. The children

decided to look after the egg, build it a nest and care for it as it had no mummy. We

predicted what might be inside and wrote our predictions down. Later in the week we spotted some clues that another dinosaur had been in our garden and became ‘dinosaur ex-plorers’ looking for clues.

The children in Ladybirds and Butterflies have been taking part in lots of fun and exciting learning oppor-tunities at school. Rhyme Rocket… visited our school and we watched a fantastic show about words that rhyme and the children used their phonics skills to recall the graphemes that rhyme in words. Author visit… Richy Chandler is an author and an illustrator and he came into school during Book Week to show the children how he draws illustrations for comics. The children planned and created their very own comic strips! Pancake Day… The children listened to the story of ‘Mr Wolf’s Pancakes’ and enjoyed making their very own pancakes! In Maths, Year 1 and Year 2 children have been learning about fractions, so they cut their pancakes into halves, quarters or thirds before eating them! Hand washing… The children have been finding out about how important it is to wash their hands when they have been to the toilet. Mrs Aitchison used some special gel and a UV torch to help the children to see the invisible germs on their hands! Please remind your child to wash their hands after they go to the toilet and show them the correct way to wash their hands, using soap and warm water and then drying them properly. We were delighted to see so many parents at Parents Evening last week and to be able to share the won-derful progress the children have made over the course of the year.

Beetle class

Beetles class had a fabulous time at the WWF centre at the beginning of the week. During the visit, they completed a rainforest quiz and learnt to produce a rainforest e-book. The trip helped to extend the chil-dren's Geography, Literacy and ICT learning. The staff were delighted with the children's good behaviour and enthusiasm throughout the visit.

Ants class

Ants class have been learning about lent and fasting in RE this half term. They have been discussing what they might give up and the significance of lent for Christians. They were also lucky enough to make their own pancakes (which are traditionally eaten the day before lent) and in doing so, they measured their own ingredients and booked them on a hob.

Spiders class

Spider’s class concluded their French topic by organising their own French café. The children invited par-ents and teachers to visit the café and buy French produce. They were responsible for budgeting, adver-tising and serving the food. The children also learnt a range of French greetings to use at the café. Thank you to anyone who supported this event. As a reward for their effort, the class are visiting a real French café at the end of the week.

Glow worms class

Glow worms enjoyed visiting the Imperial War Museum in London this month. They were particularly in-terested in: seeing world war weapons; exploring what life in the trenches was like and being able to walk into an Anderson shelter. Since the visit, they have written some excellent recounts and stories based around the wars.

Diary Dates

This month, the learning council have been planning what to do to raise money for comic relief and we have had some great ideas. We have been preparing colourful post-ers to advertise the exciting and fun activities we are hop-ing to do. We are planning to hold a bake sale to help the cause, as well as selling the new red noses to the children. There are nine new nose designs and one ultra-rare nose.

Did you know:

£4.00 could vaccinate a child in Africa against five deadly diseases.

We would like to raise £150.00 as this could pay for an entire year of schooling for a child in Ken-ya!

Thank you,

Miss Briggs

As a gentle reminder please ensure that dinner money is paid for by a Monday at the latest for the week ahead in advance of meals (£11.00 per week). Please note if you would pre-fer to pay for the remainder of this term the total amount owing is £50.60.

Please ensure that dinner money is paid online via Tucasi. This can be accessed via the schools website www.maybury.surrey.sch.uk and then by selecting the online payments tab.

Our Values – Spring Term

Friendship: September's value is friendship, some suggestions to encourage this

important value at home are:

Talk about why it is important to have friends and how we can be a good friend.

Play with friends outside school.

Read ‘Harry Potter’ by J.K Rowling, ‘Charlottes web’ by E.B White or ‘Elmer and friends’ by David McKee

Independence: October’s value is independence, some suggestions to encourage this

important value at home are:

Give children opportunities to be independent e.g. getting dressed independently, learning to tie their shoe laces and ties on they own, organising their school equipment

Forget perfection- Accept that children won’t do the task as well as you. Let them try to do things for themselves e.g. Making their own cereal, if the milk spills, show them how to clean it up with-out criticism and assure them it happens to everyone

Read ‘Meerkat Mail’ by Emily Gravett or ‘Nelson Mandela, Long walk to free-dom’ by Chris Van Wyk.

Respect: November’s value is respect , some suggestions to encourage this

important value at home are:

Talk about why it is important to show good manners.

Encourage to help with recycling and discuss why we need to respect our en-vironment

Read ‘Little Rabbit Foo Foo ‘by Michael Rosen

Appreciation: December's value is appreciation, some suggestions to encourage this important value at home are:

Talk about people who are important to us and why we appreciate them.

Talk about people less fortunate than ourselves and think about how we could help them.

Read ‘Owl babies’ by Martin Waddell
