Principal’s Report

Dear Parents, Students and Staff

We have had an exciting couple of weeks with Inter-house competitions such as the Swimming Carnival and Netball, the Kayaking Expedition for the Year 12 Outdoor Recreation class and students completing OLNA testing . On Tuesday, our swimming squad competed in the ACC Inter-school Swimming Carnival and placed 4th in our division . Well done to all who participated .

This weekend we send our prayers with the students and staff swimming the Rottnest Channel in the Port to Pub Swim . We pray for a safe crossing and a friendly breeze to ease your swim .

This event has been a part of our calendar for 5 years now and each year a group of students dedicate themselves to endless kilometers of training and early morning ocean swims . It is not possible without a team of dedicated staff and parents who coordinate the logistics, the training and who provide the support crew for the swimmers on the day . To all of our participants, whatever the capacity, we wish you a wonderful day - a day ending in ultimate success!

Today is the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence . Recently, I received a letter from the Prime Minister requesting that we, as a school, take a stance against bullying . Bullying has become a national focus after the death of Amy ‘Dolly’ Everett who was a victim of school bullying .

Often we hear the term ‘Bullying’ and automatically associate it with unkindness (‘kids picking on each other’) . While this is true, bullying is a far greater offence and extends far beyond isolated cases of unkind comments and/or actions .

As human beings we often experience CONFLICT . Bullying is different . For example, we may have mutual arguments and disagreements with others, we may not like someone’s personality or we may experience a one-off feeling of social rejection, or isolated incidences of meanness, spite, aggression, intimidation or even violence . It is important to recognise rare occurrences as ‘conflict’, as opposed to ‘bullying’ . While a student may feel upset by a single act of unfriendliness, they should not feel intimidated . In the instance of conflict, students are encouraged to walk away from the situation .

Bullying, however, is REPEATED unwanted physical, verbal or social behaviours, which can result in physical and/or psychological harm to the victim . Bullying is the misuse of power over another individual . Some examples of bullying behaviour are:• Physically hurting someone • Intentionally excluding someone from a group (online or in-person)• Saying mean or humiliating things - making fun of people or putting them down• Spreading rumours or lies• Sending nasty messages online or in-person• Sending inappropriate images online• Tagging inappropriate or unflattering images online .

(Source: https://bullyingnoway .gov .au/WhatIsBullying/DefinitionOfBullying)

As Principal, it is my hope that QBC can be a school that is free of bullying . As such, I believe the key to putting a stop to school bullying depends on the following process where:• Schools educate students on strategies to deal with bullying so they feel empowered to stand up and speak out against bullying behaviour when they experience it• Bystanders support victims by standing up and speaking out against the bullies• Students can talk freely about what they are going through with trusted adults • Schools have an established bullying policy that supports the victim .

It is imperative that we grow our young people to be confident individuals who can defend their rights, while at school and later in life when they may also encounter bullying behaviour at tertiary institutes, the workplace, or even within their own social groups . When raising a concern of bullying, it is vital the victim is supported and advised on the appropriate dialogue and skills to use when they are confronted by bullying behaviour . Bullies actually gain power from the intimidation they wield over their victims, so the best thing a victim can do is to deprive bullies of their power .

We can do this by standing firm when we experience bullying and letting the bully know that what they are doing is NOT okay . Hold them accountable for what they have said or done . Tell them that if they keep doing it, they WILL be reported . Should the bullying continue, report them to the school to allow the school to intervene .

However, the most powerful resistance to bullying is the Bystander . The person who sees what is going on and does something about it! Even if the Bystander does not feel confident enough to stand up against a bully, they can report what they witnessed to a teacher, who is then able to act on the information . Bystanders can remain anonymous at all times .

Our online world has more and more cases of bullying being reported; therefore, it is vital parents monitor their children’s online activity as young people are significantly vulnerable . Social media platforms such as ‘Snap Chat’ and ‘Instagram’ are forums where students can be targeted online as messages are deleted after being read and there is scope for fake accounts to be set up . Encourage your students to screen shot unacceptable online behaviour and hold people accountable for it . The information can then be passed on to the school (if it relates to other students at the school) or on to the police if it does not pertain to school . It is widely known that some students may have multiple social media accounts – accounts that mum and dad are ‘friends’ or ‘followers’ (so they can responsibly monitor activity) and then their real ones . This is something to be mindful of as young people are especially vulnerable without guidance on what is acceptable and unacceptable online behaviour .

We are told in Proverbs (chapter 22, verse 6) to ‘Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it .’ I believe this to be an important verse in the Bible for parenting . As parents, we want our children to grow up to be respectful and responsible members of society . The teachings of what this looks like take place during childhood and especially throughout their adolescent years . Our kids need our encouragement to stand up for what is right, no matter what, and to have the courage to do so .My prayer for QBC is that we can stand against Bullying and Violence in schools and eradicate it completely from our community . Students are encouraged to use the strategies taught to address bullying and when that doesn’t work, speak out about it with a member of staff . It is equally important that bystanders who witness bullying report it the school so that it can be addressed .Parents, if your child experiences bullying, please contact the school and speak to the Year Coordinator or the Deputy Principal so your child can be supported . It is essential that communication continues if the bullying also continues so that the College’s discipline system can be implemented .For more information on bullying:College Bullying Prevention Policyhttps://au .reachout .com/everyday-issues/bullyinghttps://bullyingnoway .gov .au/https://www .headspace .org .au/young-people/understanding-bullying-for-young-people/

The Craigie Leisure Centre was transformed by yellow, blue, red and green

enthusiasm into a celebration of colour, a festival of sound and a froth of water.

The sharp smell of chlorine and sizzling sausages were the aromatic umbrella under

which our four houses thrashed it out for this year’s title.

Mr Bower’s limitless enthusiasm encouraged swimmers and spectators alike as he

wielded the microphone with booming humour and excitement. The thunder claps from

Mr Lake’s starter pistol, the entry splashes of swimmers shooting off and the nerve

searing screams from excited spectators formed a staccato rhythm for the day. Bang,

splash, scream. When the relay races began points were close, too close for comfort.

Panic spread through the houses as supporters waved, sang and screamed to nudge their

swimmers faster to the edge of the pool

To borrow from Coldplay, the day belonged to Yellow. Carey carried home the winner’s

trophy with …

Carmichael green with envy in second place

Aylward flushed red in third

and still holding their breath, blue in the face, Taylor.

Well done to Mr Bower for organising such a fun and smoothly run Carnival

Scholarpalooza Band Competition, at THE GARAGE , in Osborne Park . There is only one prize which was first

place . PLANETARY was the only band that got a honourable mention and informed that they made the judges

decision very difficult but did not win first prize . A great effort by the band as they have only been together for

a year, and have been invited to perform again this year at the Heavy Metal Festival in Perth .
