Retail TherapySTILTON’S VILLAGE SHOP HAS A SECURE FUTURE

After a long period of uncertainty as to thefuture of Stilton Stores, SCAN is delighted toreport that the business has now beenacquired by Martin McColl’s, the well-known neighbourhood retailing group.

Their Development Director, DavidArchibald, told SCAN: ‘It is our privilege totake over from the Fernie family who servedStilton for over 30 years.

‘Here at McColl's we really believe incommunity and village stores. In fact, wehave saved many from closure all over thecountry. Although we are one of the largestgrocery shop chains we think and believe inlocal values.

‘We are looking at how we might extend andimprove the store, so we would ask that youplease bear with us while we work out thebest way to do this.

‘In the meantime we will be introducing allthe everyday essentials so you don't have todrive miles to get the basics. Our range willinclude groceries, fresh, chilled & frozenfood, wines, beers & spirits, news &magazines, tobacco and lottery, plus lotsmore.

‘We're going to be open from 7am to 10pmevery day and there will be lots of great offerswhich we will let you know about soon.

‘We will keep you updated on our plans tomake the store a little bigger, and we hopeyou enjoy what we bring to the village.’

We’ve already persuaded Mr Archibald of

the merits of promoting the new businessthrough the pages of SCAN, so you can expectto see more news and adverts over thecoming months. He is also anxious to ensurethat the shop develops to meet the needs ofthe community, so don’t be shy aboutsuggesting what you’d like to see provided.

You can find out about the Martin McCollcompany at their website:www.martinmccoll.co.uk where you can alsocontact them with any suggestions orrequests.

We’re sure all our readers will welcome thisexciting new development and wish the newStilton Stores every success. Be sure tosupport our village shop!

Christmas Comes...You might still be recovering from thedepredations of the summer holidays, buthere at SCAN we’re already working on ourChristmas edition. So we need:

News about your events, businessopening/closing times etc over theChristmas & New Year period

Any contributions to our ChristmasCracker supplement that will interestour readers: puzzles, jokes(preferably funny AND clean!) quirkystories, or whatever.

This charity spends £1m perweek on services for servicemen in need andhopes to raise around £36m from its PoppyAppeal. Stilton has a proud history of settingnew records for its poppy donations everyyear.

Some years ago there were suggestions thatthe time had come to stop these remembranceceremonies but events in Kosovo, Iraq andAfghanistan have changed attitudes. TheBritish Legion has veterans of the 2nd WorldWar now needing more care as well as thecasualties of recent conflicts. So please givegenerously, and join in one the services.

Falling like flowersWritten for Remembrance Sunday by AliceOsborne, as part of a WW1 poetry projectat King’s School.

The petal falls, the penny drops; The lifelong cycle suddenly stops.Memories from years ago,Fluttering flags with bright, colourful withproud glow.Little faces peeping out,Too young to know what it's really about. You took a breath, you made a plan,Pride is what you look for as your family'seyes you scan,But all you see is worry and hurtAs reproaches and fear forward spurt,All you hear is 'if' and 'but',Because they know every crop has to be cut.Now you're left with worry and fright,A creature of an everlasting night. No escape; you've seen it all,The dying eyes as they fall. You want to unsee it but you can never goback,You're stuck in the shook and depression, black as black.Thoughts run around your head,Little creatures, not leaving until you're dead.

A Musical RideThe history and story of a famous militaryband, written by Stilton man, Steve Ambler.

The band of the Royal Corps of Signals wasone of the best in the British army and Stevehas devoted two years of his life researchingits history and collecting photos and otherillustrations. His story runs from 1799 (theNapoleonic Wars) to 1993 (the First GulfWar).

Bandsmen have always had to be versatile. They serve as soldiers first but have alsomanaged to produce music to the higheststandard. Steve tells of many bandsmen whohave become composers, teachers orperformers in a variety of musical styles.

The book is strong on facts, well-seasonedwith interesting anecdotes and is wellillustrated. To get a copy, price £15, ringSteve on 242156. The first edition will comedated and signed by the author and willinclude a free CD.

Was it Something We Said?STILTON’S KIWI CONTINGENT HEAD FOR HOME

One of the particularly nice things aboutStilton is the particularly nice people youfind here. Sadly, we’re about to lose two ofthe nicest as they head home to New Zealand.

Karen and Clyde Walton are paid-upmembers of the ‘Life Is Not a Rehearsal’movement. Having raised a family backhome in the land of the long white cloud, they decided to pack their bags and see theworld. A sort of deferred Gap Year - or five!

By working hard and living frugally, they’vebeen able to see more of the British Isles infive years than most of us do in a lifetime.Any weekend not spent going somewhereinteresting was a weekend wasted; they’vevisited every National Trust property in theUK, all of our important towns and cities, and almost all of our most scenic countryside. And as if that wasn’t enough, they’ve alsovisited Holland, Austria, France, Germany,Italy, Spain, Turkey, Tenerife and Madeira!

So it was inevitable that Karen & Clydebecame founder members of the StiltonStumblers and enjoyed the group’s varietyof outdoor adventures. Clyde explains: ‘Backhome, a walk in the country is a week’sbackpacking or nothing. Here, you can spendthe day exploring some fascinatingcountryside off the beaten track, find placesyou’d never find otherwise, and finish it offin a pub afterwards! You guys have got somuch here that you take for granted.’

The couple quickly endeared themselves tothe Stumblers with their enthusiasm forjoining in the group’s social events. Youknew that whatever the fancy dress themewas, Clyde’s wicked sense of humour andKaren’s needlecraft would producesomething hilarious.

Sadly, the downturn in the local jobs market, combined with a natural urge to return tohome and family, have brought thisadventure to an end - or at least, nearly. Oncethey’ve packed their bags again, the Walton’swill be doing a final whistle-stop tour ofEurope before saying farewell to relatives inthe UK and heading for home.

Karen says: ‘We’ve had a fantastic time here.We knew we’d find lots to do and see, butwe never expected to make so many goodfriends and neighbours in such a short time.Saying goodbye to Stilton is going to bereally tough. We love you all.’

Ooh! Aah! Time AgainHAVE A SAFE & ENJOYABLE FIREWORKS NIGHT

Guy Fawkes was a mercenary soldier whofought for Catholic Kings against DutchProtestants. When he returned to England hebecame part of a plot to murder James 1. OnNovember 5 1605, he was in charge of thegunpowder, stored under the House of Lords. As the result of a tip-off, the Palace ofWestminster was searched and Guy Fawkesarrested. He and his fellow conspirators weretried and executed.

405 years later we still take the opportunityto enjoy an evening's entertainment in atraditional way so come along to StiltonPlaying Field on Sunday November 7 toenjoy the magnificent firework display, ridethe fairground rides and enjoy traditionalfirework-night food.

PRIVATE FIREWORKDISPLAYS

If you decide to have your own gardenfireworks party, be aware of the regulations:

Fireworks can only be let offbetween 7am and 11pm, except onNovember 5 - midnight, Diwali, NewYear and Chinese New Year - 1am.

Only buy fireworks marked BS 7114 You should NOT buy mortars or

firecrackers. Under 18's must not be in

possession of fireworks. Always follow the instructions and

keep the fireworks in a closed box. If a firework fails to explode, leave it

alone. Never set off fireworks in the street. Remember to keep pets indoors.

Bonfire Night RhymesRumour, rumour, pump and derry,Prick his heart and burn his body,And send his soul to Purgatory.

(A traditional children’s chant around thebonfire)

Guy Fawkes, GuyStick him up on high,Hang him on a lamp postAnd there let him die.Guy,Guy,Guy,Poke him in the eye,Put him on the fireAnd there let him dieBurn his body from his headThen you'll sayGuy Fawkes is deadHip, Hip, Hooray!

Bonfire Night SpudsAfter the village fireworks why not comehome to a real oven-baked potato? So muchnicer than the microwave!

Preheat the oven to 200C/Mark 6Scrub, dry the potatoes. Prick several timeswith a fork. Rub with olive oil and sprinklesea salt over. Place directly on the oven shelfand cook for 1¼ - 1½ hours.

You can serve these au naturel, with justlashings of butter, or fill them with gratedcheese. Even better forhungry people is toprepare a filling ofchilli con carne andladle it generouslyover the quarteredpotato.

Care Network’s Welcome Home from Hospital scheme urgently needs new volunteerswilling to provide practical help to people for the first weeks after discharge.

Care Network launched its service to Fenland last year and it’s been so successful thatit already needs more volunteers. You don’t need any special qualifications, just awillingness to act as a good neighbour, perhaps shopping, calling in to checkpeople are OK, or picking up prescriptions. Care Network provides trainingand pays expenses. Current volunteers enjoy the work as it can be fittedaround their other commitments. Most people need 2-4 visitsover a fortnight and you are usually linked with someone for 2-3weeks at a time.

Cold ComfortHOW TO DEAL WITH COLD-CALLING ROGUES

Recently, the local police have become awareof rogue traders cold-calling on houses inthe area offering to do roofing work. Thework has been scheduled to start one or twodays after the contract was signed.

If you enter into a contract at home for workto be done on your property and the cost isover £35 you must be given a seven-daycancellation notice. This notice must beprovided in writing on paperwork fromthe trader and it is not legally acceptablejust to put it on their flyer. It does not matterwhether the trader was uninvited or you rangand asked him to call; as long as theagreement to do the work was made at yourhome then you are entitled to the cancellationnotice. The trader is then not permitted tostart the work during this period unless yousend him a letter agreeing for him to do so.

If the trader does not provide a writtenseven-day cancellation notice he iscommitting a criminal offence and thecontract may not be binding. If you enterinto an agreement you can cancel within theseven day period; if you are not given acancellation notice you may have longer tocancel the contract.

If you receive flyers though your door, orare visited by salesmen, it is advisable toseek quotes from other traders before youagree to have any work done. Pleaseremember that most legitimate traders willnot cold call.

If you have any suspicions that rogue tradershave visited you or been operating in your

area, please call Cambridgeshire Police on0345 456 456 4 or Consumer Direct on 034504 05 06.

SCAN says: Why run the risk? We carryadverts from reputable local businesses whorely on the custom and goodwill of localcustomers. If your roof - or anything else -needs fixing, pick up SCAN and then pick upthe ‘phone!

Charity CollectorsIt has been brought to the attention of theParish Council that people are makingdoor-to-door charity collections in Stilton.

While this is not in itself illegal, it isnecessary to obtain a licence from the DistrictCouncil to do so. Collectors MUST at alltimes carry identification showing on whosebehalf the collection is being made. It is notsufficient merely to have a collecting potwith a logo - anybody can fake one of these.

If you are unsure about any door-to-doorcollectors, ask for proof of identity or contactthe Licensing Officer at HDC on 01480388388 who will verify - or otherwise - theauthenticity of the caller.

And if you suspect that a caller is notgenuine, contact the police and provide asmuch information as you can about theindividual - especially if he/she is using avehicle. Remember: genuine collectors willbe only too happy for you to confirm theiridentity.

Breast CancerAwareness

Breast cancer is the most common cancer inthe UK; 1 in 9 women will develop it at somepoint in their lives. However, the number ofwomen dying from breast cancer is fallingdue to increased detection and improvedtreatments.

Being 'Breast Aware' means getting to knowhow your breasts look and feel so you knowwhat is normal for you and you can thereforedetect any changes.

CHANGES TO LOOK FOR: Any lump or thickening; Change in size or shape; Change in skin (puckering or

redness); Nipple changes (inverted nipple,

nipple discharge); Swelling in the armpit or around the

collar bone (enlarged glands).

TO EXAMINE YOUR BREASTS Begin by looking in the mirror with

hands on hips, then raise your arms; Feel each breast in turn,

remembering to check up to thearmpit and to the collar bone;

Then lie down and feel each breastagain.

A good website with diagrams of how to selfexamine is: www.breastcancer.org

NHS screening by mammography (x-rays)starts at age 50 and continues every threeyears until age 70.

Who is Who?AND WHAT DO THEY DO?

This month we introduce our DispensaryClerks, Ruth Watkins and Tammy Colbrook.

OUR ROLE AT YGPAs Dispensary Clerks our main duties are toprocess prescriptions, requested either viae-mail or fax, or from repeat slips placed intothe black box in Reception.

We also deal with Care Homes and havemany patients who have weekly prescriptionsfor medication which go into trays which aredispensed by Rowlands Pharmacy and arealso delivered if required.

We also deal with many ‘phone queries frompatients and hospitals. Orders are not takenover the ‘phone for security and time reasons;we are a very busy department processingmany prescriptions each day. We also raisequeries to your GP when medications are notupdated and reviews are needed.

When the prescriptions have been issued andprinted they are given to the On-Call Doctorfor signature. They are then given back tothe Dispensary Clerks to be sorted and sentto the relevant Pharmacy, or left in Receptionfor collection. This is why 48 hours areneeded to complete this process.1. Issue & Print required medications.2. On-Call Doctor to sign at relevant

times of day.3. Prescriptions given back to

Dispensary Clerks to be sent torelevant Pharmacies or left inReception for collection by patient.

4. Pharmacy then has to dispensemedications which are checked by aPharmacist before being given topatient.

How's Your Breathing?Asthma and COPD (Chronic ObstructivePulmonary Disease) are two respiratoryconditions which are diagnosed, treated andmonitored within the Practice.

ASTHMAOver five million people are affected byasthma in the UK. Asthma is aninflammatory condition which can affectboth children and adults. Symptoms areoften triggered by pollen, dust, viral illnesses, pets, smoke or pollutants. Its main treatmentincludes inhalers to treat the inflammationand relieve symptoms, such as a cough orwheeze. Inhalers need to be taken correctlyto be of benefit. An annual review withinthe nurse-led Asthma Clinic provides anopportunity to review medication, discusstreatment, assess any need for treatmentchange and offer advice regarding self-monitoring and management.

COPDCOPD causes airflow obstruction and affectsover 3.7 million people in the UK. It iscurrently very under-diagnosed and its maincause is due to smoking. Diagnosis involvesa simple breathing test (spirometry) whichis performed at the Practice. Inhalers mayhelp symptoms, which include a cough andbreathlessness. Follow-up in the nurse-ledCOPD Clinic provides the opportunity tomonitor breathlessness, assess and altertreatment as needed, and offer advice onmanaging breathless episodes or"exacerbations".

Anybody over the age of 35 who smokes cancontact the surgery for a spirometry test, asearly diagnosis and treatment can help slowits progression. The main advice is to stopsmoking. Stop smoking support can beaccessed by the Smoking CessationCounsellor or members of the nursing team.

Muriel EthelWoolner1949 - 2010

We record with sadness the passing ofMuriel Woolner, a loss made all the morepoignant by its suddenness.

With her elegant demeanour and strikingblonde hair, Muriel would have been atthe least a familiar figure to almosteverybody in Stilton. She lived in oneof the cottages at the lower end of NorthStreet and had probably served most ofus at some time or other while sheworked in our village shops.

A service of thanksgiving for her lifewas held in St Mary’s on 14th Octoberand attended by a great many of herfriends and acquaintances.

We extend our condolences to allMuriel’s family and close friends.

Field TrialSPORTS FIELD QUESTIONNAIRE RESULTS

The Parish Council would like to thankeverybody who took the time and trouble tocomplete and return the questionnaire wepublished earlier this year. We now havesome high-quality information on which tobase a strategy for the long-termdevelopment of the playing field.

Pleasingly, responses were evenly splitbetween the age groups; 61 adults and 66young people responded. While there weresome points common to both, the differencesin interests were revealing.

(Note: not all questions were answered byall respondents.)

So no particular surprises there; ‘Yes please,we’d all like better facilities!’

Of the current uses, the most popular werethe skate park, playing with one’schildren/grandchildren, and football training,as well as ‘hangin’ out’ by the youngergeneration.

DEAR SANTA...As to what people would like to see on thefield, the age groups differed. Adults rankeda football pitch first, while the youngsters

preferred more challenging play equipment. They ranked a football pitch only 6th.

Both groups were equally keen on akick-about area with a goal, a Multi-UseGames Area (MUGA), play equipment forthe under-8s and a cricket pitch. (Nice to seeyoung people interested in cricket!)

Among the small number of othersuggestions were a rugby pitch, a zip wire, bungee jump (!), climbing wall, tennis courtsand a bowls green.

Among the various comments made, it waspointed out that the village already has acommunity hall, the school hall, ChurchMeeting Room and Parish Council room, which can variously accommodate groupsup to around 200 people; what we need arechanging/toilets facilities for sports use.

It was also observed that no one sport oractivity should dominate and that the fieldshould be a community facility for all users. It was even suggested that the Football Clubshould buy and manage its own field.

Floodlighting was mentioned by a couple ofrespondents, but we take this to mean ’whenthere’s something to floodlight!’

The village took a very brave decision to buya freehold field as a long-term asset for thecommunity, but for ‘brave’ read ‘expensive’!The Parish Council has very limited fundsfor any local development; it has already costmore to make the improvements to the fieldso far than it did to buy it in the first place.

Encouragingly, the answer to the questionabout willingness to pay extra Council Taxwas a guarded ‘OK’, with about 55% of theadults saying ‘yes.’ Nobody wants to paymore tax, least of all in today’s economicclimate, but this does suggest that manyresidents would be willing to contribute to atangible village asset.

So thanks to all who contributed to thissurvey, and congratulations to the lucky drawwinners, Donna Guest and Elena Newell.

Grant support for any such communitydevelopment projects is likely to be scarcenow for obvious reasons, but thisinformation, and the experience at theParish’s disposal for knowing how best togo about waving the begging bowl, at leastgives us some sort of chance.

And you’ll read about it in SCAN, of course!
