KARISMAKATZ DJ Gosper & Christo Carlsen are the core members of KarismaKatz. As a duo, they regularly travel the countryside perform-ing their brand of blues, jazz and that indefinable ‘other’. Both survivors, their music gives a strong message of getting on with life through adversity. See them live and discover why they have been described as “world class”, “spellbinding” and “awesome”. DJ Gosper (vocal & harmonicas) has been singing the blues for many years after falling hopelessly in love with the harmonica. She has since developed a reputation as one of the tastiest blues-harp players in Australia with a spirited and engaging stage presence. After spending 2007 to 2008 recovering from breast cancer, DJ is “performing with a passion that knows no tomorrow.” (Bill Arnett, the Folkus Room, Canberra). Gosper says “Before cancer I was a part-time musician with dreams of becoming full time. My career was just beginning to take flight when I was diagnosed. While the illness, surgery and treatment, has set back my career, it has also fired me up to live my dreams. I am now a full-time musician, and as tough as it is I’m loving every minute of it!” Her professional musical career began in 1995 fronting The Dynamic Lifters as singer, keyboard and harmonica player. This band exposed DJ to a range of music, from original songs to obscure folk songs to pub-rock and blues-rock covers and helped her to begin her journey toward finding her own sound. As member of renowned vocal trio The Blues Cowgirls from 2002-05, DJ played at various Australian Blues and Folk festivals. The independent release of ‘Ask Any Woman’ was awarded "Best CD of the Year" by Canberra Roots Music. She formed the KarismaKatz in 2004 and co-wrote and produced her second CD “Spirit on the Rise”. In November 2007 DJ scooped the Canberra Blues Society Awards winning three of the six music categories: "Best Vocalist", "Best Instrumentalist" and "Best Song" (Burn Baby Burn, co-written with ‘Katz guitarist, Christo Carlsen). Although it is DJ’s third CD, “Hot Flush Blues” is her first solo album. The CD is true DJ style, one she has made her own. With a mix of original and cover songs, it walks a fine line between traditional, swing and funky blues. See Karismakatz at taste Canowindra 7pm Friday 14 May with a free wine tasting, 3 course meal and coffee with the stars for $75 per person. Bookings essential onl ine at www.tastecanowindra.com.au or by hone on 02 6344 2332.

To the editor... Dear Editor On behalf of the customers of Jeanette’s Inspiration, I would like to thank Jeanette Newcombe for her 17 years of providing lovely, comfortable wearable clothes for us. Her stock was never extreme , always good value and suitable for our lifestyle. We have been very lucky in Canowindra to have this business and so many groups in Canowindra would like to say thanks for Jeanette’s Fash-ion Parades which not only provided a fun occasion, but also allowed our charities to raise a lot of money for our community needs. I think we probably didn’t realise the tremendous effort required to stage these events, or the amount of money raised, and so thank you to Jeanette, Robyn, Alice and all the girls who modelled over many years. We wish you well in your retirement and thank you for your shop, parades and your service to the community. Virginia Cullane

TIGERS DOWN IN LOCAL DERBY Sunday’s game between the Eugowra Golden Eagles and Canowindra Tigers was once again a hard tussle in typical local derby style. The game certainly lacked the intensity from the previous weeks match between the Tigers and Grenfell, but was exciting to watch nevertheless. In front of the typical vocal crowd at Eugowra Oval, The Golden Eagles charged out of the gates and stormed to a 14-nil half time lead. The Tigers were there own worst enemies in the first half with way too many errors. After regroup-ing at the half time break, the Tigers pack played their simple running game and made plenty of inroads, giving classy halves Damian Kennedy and Rob Burn opportunities to feed the backline. Ironically the first try came from forward Andrew Pull who latched onto a Damian Kennedy grubber to score under the posts. Then lock forward Wayne McFawn charged over and the tigers had closed the gap to 14-12. The Eagles slipped further ahead when a deft grubber by the Eugowra captain ricocheted its way into the in goal and was grounded for a 20-12 lead. The never say die Tigers responded with a try to Phil Butler to set up an exciting finish at 20-16, but time ran out for the Tigers as the eagles held on for their first win for the year. Best for the Tigers Mick Walker, Phil Butler and Pat Kennedy. The Tigers now face the undefeated Peak Hill Roosters at Peak Hill on Sunday. At the time of going to print there are grave doubts on the availability of Wayne McFawn (suspected broken finger), Reweti Kaire (suspected fractured leg) and Adam Taylor. LEAGUE TAG In an exciting League tag match the Tigresses were defeated 7-6 by the Golden Eagles. Eugowra led 3-0 before Canowindra squared the ledger at 4-4 just after half time, but the eagles kicked on to win 7-6 in a very entertaining game. Try scorers for the girls Sally McLean 5, Tara Grant 1 try. Best on the day Sally McLean, Jacinta McMullen and Nicole Stevenson. OPEN JUNIORS Canowindra Open Juniors kick off their season on Sunday against last years premiers Peak Hill Roosters. ROUND FOUR The Tigers travel to Peak Hill on Sunday to take on the Peak Hill Roosters. Open Juniors 12.45pm, First Grade 2pm.

RUGBY GALA DAY A HUGE SUCCESS Over 250 sub junior rugby union players and supporters converged on Canowindra Sunday 9 May for the Junior Pythons annual Gala Day. Our 7s, coached with increasing confidence by Pete “Pick Em Up” Stacey and Anthony “No Fear” Durkin, played wonderfully well in what was for many their first ever game of Walla rugby. The first encounter against the formidable Orange City saw the veteran Finbar scamper in for his trademark try scoring double. This combined with the surpris-ingly well organized early season defence from the rest of the team, particularly Sammy, Tom and Pat, made for a cracking start to the year. Jackson also chimed in later in the game with an impressive try to bring the final score to 3-nil. The second game against Bathurst Burrs gold was also a spectacular team effort. Great defensive efforts ensued from Mick Coady, as well as Sammy and Jackson. Tries to Tom and Pat made for an exciting match however relentless attacking by Bathurst saw a couple of close tries. The final score of 2 all had the crowd on its feet until the final siren. The third and final game saw our keen apprentices launch into a relentless 4-1 victory over a well rated Parkes Boars out-fit. Aiden found his confidence to prove a real menace to the hapless Boars. Coach Pete urged his team to pile on the points with a try to Pat and a golden Trifecta to Finbar. Well done to our under 7s and the two coaches on a great season debut. With under 9s short on the ground, we signed a watertight contract with the Trangie based Macquarie Emus to run a much under rated Barbarians outfit for the day. Our very keen Nick Jeffrey and Max Coady were excited to be joined by Sam Coady to prove the powerhouse of the combined team. A half game cameo appearance by veteran Will Wright was still not enough however to stem the strength and co ordination of Forbes in the first game. Nick made great inroads into the defence with strong runs in the second game against Bathurst. He was well backed up his rugby league skills as he led the Barbarians with strong tackling. Despite

this the Bathurst team prevailed to score a convincing victory. The Kinross team were our final opposition with Max converting well to the changed code as he cleaned out well in the rucks and ran strongly in the loose play. Nick left many a lightweight Kinross player in his wake with great upfield surges. Sam Coady proved that genes are a big part of this game as he stepped into the half back role and continued with many familiar tricks to mesmerize the defence with sharp running. Final score a close win to Kinross. The under 11s again presented a formidable team on the day with additional troops coming aboard from Cowra to bolster numbers. We are a young 11s team this year and the coaches were a little hesitant at our prospects despite good efforts in past years. This fear was soon allayed as we took on the Bathurst Burrs team in the first game. Veteran Tom Robson showed the way from the outset as he led the tight 5 up the field in some good pick and drive attack. Quick link play through Riley Mitchell at half saw Joe Coady surge through the defence to put us in good field position early in the game. Tom was rewarded with a try early from a determined run through the ruck. As the match went on, we combined well with our Cowra counterparts to tackle the Burrs team out of the game. A late try by Tom again up the middle saw the final score set at 2-nil. Our second game was a variation on the original plan as we combined our players with Parkes to play Cowra. It was a credit to the spirit of sportsmanship and competitiveness that our players were able to adapt quickly to their changed team mates and put on a very exciting

game of Rugby. Harry and Will built on Toms first game example and ran with great endeavour up the middle of the paddock. Good skills were on show as we recovered loose ball and fed it to a Parkes /Canowindra half combination. Joe and Angus found their share of gaps out wide however the majority of the game was scoreless as great Cowra defence pulled our boys up just short. Lachlan Herbert stepped up for some evasive attacking and enjoyed his first day of rugby. Despite the tight play, a single gap appeared half way through the second half to allow a fast Cowra inside centre to sprint 40m to score the match winning try. The final game was against Orange city as we reverted to the Cowra combination again. This game seesawed throughout and with some inbuilt controversy had the crowd impressed with good attacking and defence from both sides. Curtis grew immensely in confidence during the day and was able to launch some strong running to provide excellent field position for our backs. After begging the coaches, Harry was injected into the backline with great effect. He was rewarded with a try that had our team full of confidence going into the second half. Two tries followed and we found our selves out done by a single point at the final whistle. Joe Coady had an opportunity to score a wonderful individual try only to be robbed by a bouncing ball over the line. Thanks to all involved in the gala day, particularly the mums who saw little of the sleep-in and breakfast in bed that they dream of on Mothers Day. Rugby was certainly the winner however, and the great family atmosphere we achieved with our Gala Day is a credit to all those involved. This weekend we travel to Parkes, contact your coaches for details.
