Isabelle Everett Semester 1 Portfolio

During this meet it was challenging at first to get close to the swimmers because the coaches were kind of strict as to where they allowed me to stand. I found that the natural lighting was good so it was easy to take clear and bright pictures. In the future I will aim to capture more of the athletes faces.

“A loss, a win, or a mistake doesn’t change the way I treat my teammates on the court. They will always be not only my teammates, but my family,” Molly Roister (9) said. The girls proved their strength through unity in their game against Bloomingdale High school on Dec. 13th, 2014. The girls matched up to their opponents tying the first quarter with 13-13. Point guard Sydney Vanson (9) led the team offensively by making multiple assists and scoring a total of three layups and one three-point shot in the second quarter. Vanson said, “The best play of the game was when I got a steal and passed it up the court to Martie Mahon (9) for the layup.” Bloomingdale began to take the lead when Plant called a time out to restrategize their plays. “Coach Brady motivated and inspired the team when we fell behind Bloomingdale by not getting angry but staying calm and explaining what we needed to improve on and fix if we wanted to win,” Alyssa Stern (9) said. Tying the second quarter 27-27 and ending the third quarter 33-32 Plant, the team continued to limit their opponent’s offense with strong defense. Free throws and steals were the two primary sources of points throughout the fourth quarter. Beating Bloomingdale 48-40, Mahon scored the last three baskets of the game by making both of her free throws and a layup. “The best way to stay focused while shooting free throws is to take a deep breath, only look the hoop, and only think about making the basket,” Mahon said.

This copy was easier to write than other copies I have written in the past because the game was very eventful and the girls ended up winning. I did not know exacty how to write/ incorporate the date into the copy and I know now that the “th” is not included in the date.

As the sun began to set and the gold rush gathered into Dad’s Stadium, the football team was off to a solid start. Right off the bat offense took advantage of Alonso’s weak defense. Kyle Henderson (12) heated things up on the field with his interception and his 55-yard run into the end zone. “Kyle’s interception really got our momentum going and it made us feel like we had Alonso right where we wanted them so that was a huge deal” said Jake Fruhmorgen (12). Motivated to leave his mark as a senior, Jordan Reed (12) added to the scoreboard by returning Alonso’s punt for a touchdown. “Coach Weiner’s speech about leaving a legacy behind inspired us to play the best we could and to leave everything we had out on the field. It showed us that were not just playing for ourselves but for the whole school and that really encouraged the team as a whole,” said Robby Mondor (12). Pass-ing under the gold and black arch gave seniors reminiscent feelings of gratitude. “I’m always proud to be a plant panther and it was amazing to be able to look back on senior night and realize how much hard work our team had put in to get to that point in the season” said Luke McFadden (12).

This was the first copy I wrote and I did not really know the aspects of AP style when I wrote it. From writing this copy I learned to properly quote students, include the date in a copy, and begin a new paragraph after a new quote.

I learned that moving myself as close to the pool as a could helped me to get the best pictures. This was a chal-lenge because the coaches restricted most areas from our access. I like this picture because it almost caputres the speed of the athlete.

Although this picture does not show much of the athlete, I like it because of the water being sprayed. I timed when to capture each photo based on when they would break the surface when coming up to breathe. I think the photo would have been even better if it was taken from the left side of the pool.

Throughout their season, the girls took part in many pregame rituals not only to motivate themselves individually, but also to come together as a team. One ritual occurred as the starting players were called out to the field. The rest of the team formed two lines and put their hands up forming an arch, and when each players name was called they ran under the arch and onto the field.

“It definitely gets our minds focused as we run through the arch and it gets us all pumped for the game”, said Emma Haney (12).

Before each game, after warming up to Waka Flocka Flame’s “No Hands”, they huddled up, leaned in an out, and chanted “K. A. R. T. PLANT! Whooo”

Emma Platt (9) said, “My favorite part of our pregame is the chant because it’s a special thing for our team only.”

Writing this copy for a girls soccer mod was challenging because I was not actually at the game. Also, the girls were hard to interview because it was difficult to find a variety of students from different grades. I felt that the copy was not exciting and limited of information.

Butterfly was my favorite stroke to capture because of the arm motions. This picture is not the best be-cause I did not capture her face. When photographing future swimmers, I learned to take multiple shots so each move of the stroke was captured.

It was challenging to photograph this game because it was a very back and forth game and each team didnt score for a while. The gym was also a different lighting than I expected so it took me a while to adjust the settings on my camera.

Page 10: Isabelle Everett Portfolio

This photo would have been better if I had captured the ball, but I enjoy the motion that I captured. It was challenging to get a good angle because I wanted to show enough of the girl’s body, yet the ball did not fit in the frame.

I found it easier to capture the girls better when standing in the corner of the court almost near the basket. I learned to take multiple shots while focusing on the same thing so the quality was more clear. Their constant movement and fast breaks made it difficult to non-blurry photos.
