of Standard Mark may be granted to manufacturers or producers may be obtained from the Bureau of Indian Standards. Metal Containers Sectional Committee, MTD 32 FOREWORD This standard was first published in 1971 and subsequently revised in 1977, 1984 and 1998. While reviewing the standard in the light of experience gained during these years, the committee decided to revise it to bring in line with the present practices being followed by the Indian and overseas country. In this revision following modification have been proposed .

PROPOSED REVISION

REASON

Clause 2 References IS-1993 Clause 4.3.1

ISO 11950 : Cold reduced electrolytic chromium/chromium oxide-coated steel

To include IS-12591 standard for Cold reduced Tin free steel in sheet form

Tin free steel is suitable and is currently being used to manufacture capseals .

Clause 4.1.1 Clause A.2.2. material and configuration – Flanges shall be made from either mild steel according to ISO 3573 of ISO 1079, or any other material suitable for this intended use.

Grade DD or EDD may be removed. Nominal sheet thickness minimum to be revised to 2.00 mm.

If Flange conforms to the test parameters and dimensional specification, thickness and grade of material becomes immaterial and also clause mentions ‘other material and/or other configurations may be agreed’

Clause 4.1.2 Clause 3.3 Thermoplastics

Thermoplastic may be added

Thermoplastic is being used by some customers.

Fig. 2 Dimensions of Flange and flange gasket - dimension h1- ISO-15750 mentions height from top of the base to top of the neck instead of overall height. ‘ h1 = 15.80±0.5mm

Dimension shall be shown from top of the neck to top of base. ‘h1 shall be 15.80±0.5mm

This dimension is more critical and relevant for manufacture of the flange and for insertion to the drum top. In IS-1784 this critical dimension has to be derived from the total height and base thickness, which leads to possibilities of variation 15.40 to 17.0 mm In the ISO-15750 the critical neck height is specified as 15.8±0.5. This gives a variation of 15.30mm to 16.30mm, which is desired. However, the dimension of 15.3 is lower than 15.40 as new technologies allow for lower thickness of material. To promote this saving of material, we

recommend that BIS also incorporate 15.30 as the lower limit. Since our revision is subsequent to the ISO revision, we could consider reduction of base thickness t1 from max. 3.2 to 3.0mm.

2.80±0.4mm 2.70±0.30mm As explained above

Dimension shall be shown from top of the neck to top of base. ‘h1 shall be 12.90±0.5mm

As in 2" Flange the critical neck height should be indicated. Since most of the major drum manufacturers are using tandem die set for insertion & the critical neck height of 2" flange is reduced by 0.9mm, the same shall apply to 3/4" Flange. Thus neck height shall be 12.90±0.5mm as in ISO-15750.

2” PLUGS Fig 3 Dimensions of Plugs as Plug gaskets – 2½ threads min.

ISO-15750 is silent on no. of threads.

The requirement may be removed.

Since from closure point of view it could even be just one threads all the necessary force is taken by one thread.

This standard has been issued in two parts, the other part in the series is: For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS 2:1960 `Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised), the number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.
