Prep to Year 6

Learning to play an instrument is not only a rewarding experience, but a proven method of enhancement for academic studies and the rounded development of young students.

The Ipswich Grammar School Junior Music Program offers a large range of musical opportunities from Prep through to Year 6 and beyond.

What instruments can my son learn at IGS?Our specialist Instrumental teachers can provide high quality tuition on the following instruments:

Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Percussion (Drums), Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Piano, Guitar, Electric Bass and Voice.

When are Instrumental Music lessons available?Not all lessons are available from Prep-6 due to physical restrictions. Lesson availability is as follows:

Strings - Private Violin and Viola lessons available Years 3-12 - Private Cello lessons available Years 3-12Piano - Private Piano lessons available Years 3-12Guitar - Private Guitar lessons available Years 3-12Woodwind, Brass & Percussion (Drums)- Private lessons are available on all band instruments from Years 5-12Voice - Private Vocal lessons available Years Prep-12.

Years 5-6 Ensemble ProgramThe Junior School Music Ensemble Program offers the opportunity for all Junior School students to study a band instrument for free.

As part of Ipswich Grammar School’s approach to holistic education the following opportunities exist as part of our Ensemble Program.

Year 5 Band ProgramAll Year 5 students will participate in the Year 5 Band Program. This will include a free weekly group tuition lesson and an ensemble rehearsal during school time.

Year 6 Ensemble ProgramStudents in Year 6, have the option to continue with their band instrument at a cost of $110 per term. This includes a weekly group tuition lesson and an ensemble rehearsal. Students not wishing to participate in the Band Program have the option of a “Classroom Music Ensemble” lesson at no cost.

Performance OpportunitiesAs well as the Year 5 and 6 ensembles, Ipswich Grammar School offers extension ensembles including Preludio Strings (Junior String Ensemble), Concert Band (Years 6-9 students), Junior Brass Ensemble (Years 6-9), Jazz Ensemble (Years 6-9), Junior Guitar Group (Years 6-9) and Junior Choir (Years 4-6). These ensembles generally rehearse outside of school hours. Rehearsal times can be viewed on the school website: http://www.ipswichgrammar.com/education/the-arts

As well as the ensembles mentioned above the students will be required to transition to the senior ensembles when they have reached the appropriate AMEB grade or year group:

Lesson PricesPrivate lessons are billed at the Music Teachers Association of Queensland rates and current rates are displayed in the Music Information & Enrolment booklet.
