Florida snow birds were well represented, as some had only returned home within hours or days before attending the April meeting. I suppose the Floridians were glad to get back to Iowa “home cooked” meals like meat loaf, liver and onions and such”.

Your newsletter team gives a big THANK

YOU to Richard for his report and to Rich-ard and Martha for hosting the luncheon.

NOW WE KNOW WHERE TONGANOXIE IS Report by June Ryan

A great, well-planned Region Rally was held in Tonganoxie, KS April 28 through May 2

nd. Eleven Iowa Members were in atten-

dance: Ben & Marcia Woolley, Chuck & Sandie Kiple, Tom & Shirley Herron, Lavonne Sandersfeld, Donella Watkinson, Marilyn Mulbrook, Chuck & Nancy Helle, Arden & Pam Taube, Larry & Pat Dellamuth, Norm & Linda Beu and Paul & June Ryan. Opening ceremonies were Wednesday evening with the presen-tation of the National & Unit Flags. Thursday we had 2 chartered buses to tour Kansas City. The first tour was of the Arabian Steamboat Museum, which featured the discovery of the steam-boat which was buried in the mud of the Missouri River and thousands of the many items that were recovered. They still have many items in storage to clean and preserve for display in the museum. This was followed by a box lunch at the Union Sta-tion and then we toured the World War I Museum. Friday we spent in Leavenworth, KS. Many signed up for the tour of Fort Leavenworth but only the first group got to go. Unfortu-

nately, the trolley broke down and they had to be rescued by cars and the other tours were cancelled. The Annual Board meeting was held at the Heritage Center with a wonderful spaghetti dinner prepared by a group of local ladies. The election of Officers for 2015-2017 was held resulting with Gary Rush, President, Beth McCall, 1

st VP and Dwight Olson 2

nd

VP. Gary will be installed at the International Rally in Farming-ton, NM with the other Region Presidents. Following the luncheon we toured the Carousel Museum which contained three carousels, one of which was operational. We all recalled fond memories of past days as we rode… some rode several times. The carousal’s were manufactured by C.W. Parker Company formerly located in Leavenworth. Friday evening the six Region 8 Units each presented a skit of the 6 trails to the West. The Iowa Unit presented a skit portraying the Santa Fe Trail with all our members participating. A special THANK YOU goes to Lavonne Sandersfeld for planning the skit and Chuck Cabalka for the poem, read by Chuck Kiple that was

used as the theme. A Joker tournament was held on Saturday along with open house of some of the Airstreams plus the hobby show and flea market. After dinner and entertainment the flags were retired closing the rally. No Region Rally would be complete with-out plenty of food, door prizes and ice cream. We had three breakfasts prepared by the Unit; Iowa doing an egg bake planned by Lavonne. We also had two other catered dinners. There were a total of 60 members regis-tered for the rally. Not like other Region Rallies, the weather was ideal. We only got a few drops of rain. THANK YOU, June, for a fine summary of a wonderful rally.

MESA VERDE NATIONAL PARK For the last several months, we have been including articles about things to see and visit while in the Farmington, NM area attending the WBCCI International Rally. We have covered the narrow-gauge train ride between Durango and Silverton, Chaco Canyon Historic Site and Aztec Ruins National Monument. This month we will tempt you with Mesa Verde National Park. From the fairgrounds to the Mesa Verde NP entrance is a total of 73 miles, about a 90-minute drive. If you have never been to Mesa Verde, you have really missed an educational, interesting and photographic experience. There are pueblo ruins both on top of the mesa and in huge arched caves on the cliff sides. All of the mesa-top ruins and a number of the cliff-side ruins can be visited either on your own or on a ranger-guided walk. Spruce Tree House, Cliff Palace and Balcony House are among the most visited and most spectacular. Ancestral Pueblo people made these structures their home from about AD 600 to 1300. Displays and movies at the Visitor Center are very well done. Pack a picnic lunch, take off by 8:30 AM (or earlier) and plan to be gone for the entire day. Don’t forget to take your camera and spare batteries! We guarantee you’ll need them. If you decide not to make a day-trip from the rally grounds, visit Mesa Verde either before or after the rally. There is camping in the park, directly across the highway from the park entrance or in Cortez, about 10 miles west of the entrance. You may never get this close again for a long time. See pictures on the following page.

THE ROUND-ABOUT ROUTE FROM APACHE JUNCTION, ARIZONA TO MISSOULA, MONTANA Your newsletter team decided it was finally time to visit California; that “country” on our west coast. A sophomore granddaughter at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, CA, another one graduating from the University of Montana in Missoula on May 16

th, a grandson

graduating from Denver Metro University in Denver, another grandson graduating from high school in Arvada, CO in May, a third grandson getting married in Denver in July and the WBCCI International Rally in Farmington, NM in late June seemed like good rea-sons to travel in the West. That is why your team was not at the Region 8 Rally and won’t make the Iowa Unit May Rally at Inde-pendence.

As this newsletter is being written, your team is already finished with California (thank goodness!) and is in Spokane, WA, headed for Montana. The weather has been fantastic, with only one period of rain and that occurred overnight while parked at Sacra-mento, CA. A number of items have been crossed off the “bucket lists”. Among these were Sequoia, Kings Canyon and Yosemite National Parks, Monterey, San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge, the California State Capitol Building in Sacramento, Lassen Volcanic National Park, Redwood National Park, Humboldt State Park, and the beautiful Oregon coastline.

An entire day was spent in Sequoia NP, viewing the gigantic trees, including the General Sherman Tree. At 275 feet, it is not the tallest or widest tree in the world, but with a vol-ume of 52,500 cubic feet, it is the biggest tree in the world. It is 2,200 years old, meaning it was already 200 years old when Christ was born. WOW!! The General Grant Tree in Kings Canyon NP boasts being the third largest tree in the world (by volume) and with a diameter of 40 feet at ground level, it is the world’s widest known sequoia.

Not knowing what the weather might be, no reservations were made to camp in Yosemite NP. Oops! That was a mistake. You’d think that in mid-morning on a Wednesday in mid-April there should be no problem getting a camping spot. Guess again! Finally, a spot was obtained in a private RV park about 6 miles outside the south entrance, from which trips were made back into the park to see the sights. The views of water-falls and sheer canyon walls was spectacular, with Bridal Veil and Yosemite Falls just as pretty as pub-licized and the view of Half Dome and El Capitan from Glacier Over-look was breathtaking.

Upon arriving in San Francisco (the trailer was parked at the fairgrounds in San Mateo), your team took a 4-hour Gray Line tour of the city. The route passed through Chinatown, in-cluded a stop at the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge, provided a view of Alcatraz Is-land, went out to Land’s End at the north end of the San Francisco peninsula, as well as other notable SF landmarks. Tickets for the ferry ride and tour of Alcatraz are extremely hot items, needing reservations to be made weeks in advance, so that was missed.

After leaving the San Francisco area, we made a stop in Fairfield, CA to tour the Jelly Belly Factory. We got samples, but, at $9.99 per pound, we didn’t buy any jelly beans. In Sacramento we paid a visit to the state capitol building where we spent an hour.

Lassen Volcanic NP was a disappointment as the park road was closed one mile in from the south entrance. We were told by a park ranger that the road had been cleared of snow but other work was underway to get the park opened about one week after we were there. Shucks, just our luck! Your team missed all but one of the volcanic sites (mud pots, steam vents and boiling springs) which was a disappointment. The fantastic views of Lassen Peak were also restricted by not being able to drive the park road, but it was visible in the distance at various locations on the drive to the park.

Humboldt State Park and Redwood National Park provided wonderful views of the tallest

trees in the world. The redwoods reach as high as 380 feet, more than 20 feet higher than the Statue of Lib-erty. The Airstream and van looked like miniature toys when parked beside these monsters. The Tall Tree in Humboldt SP had a diameter of 13.4 feet, a circumfer-ence of 42 feet and a height of 359.3 feet.

Finally, after leaving California, your team drove Hwy. 101 along the Oregon coast and saw numerous fantastic views of rocky cliffs, sandy beaches and 7-10 foot waves breaking upon the shoreline. The days were sunny but the wind was a constant nuisance, blowing 15-25 MPH nearly every day. At any rate, your team has thoroughly enjoyed the trip to-date and would encourage all of you to include travel to the area if you like nature. You won’t be disappointed and that’s a guarantee.

June Ryan sent your team the following article concerning an Airstream trailer for sale in Region 8. The information was provided to June by Tom Mesko.

“Former Delta Unit members (Charlie & Eva VanGennip) are trying to sell their Airstream trailer due to health reasons. They asked me to help put together an ad. They have not yet provided a photo/photos, but it is a very nice rig. Thanks for your help. Tom.

Without a moment’s hesitation he replied, “Do you think I look stupid?”
