The Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College, CUNY, the UPR Graduate School of Planning, and other partners convened a conference last June with the goal of supporting the rebuilding efforts undertaken by the island’s civic sector and to promote the participation of stateside Puerto Ricans, the diaspora, in such efforts. Recommendations from this conference and a prior conference with similar goals conducted in May in New York City point to the urgent need to support the active engagement of the civic sector in the rebuilding process. One of the key challenges discussed by participants in these conferences is how to promote the active collaboration of multiple civic sector stakeholders towards common goals.

The conference Empresarismo Social y Reconstrucción seeks to provide a forum for examining the potential impact of core federal programs supporting economic recovery after the catastrophic impact of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The main goal of the conference would be to assess challenges and opportunities at this critical juncture of economic recovery and to examine how federal programs could be deployed and combined to support economic development, job creation and poverty alleviation.

Federal programs supporting economic recovery will be examined through the lenses of core stakeholders in the reconstruction process: nonprofit, faith-based, community development corporations and other civic organizations; credit unions and other community development financing institutions; the private sector, state and local government, academics, and others.
