Introducing a new grammar

I have followed Mr. Kitahara’s method of teaching English for several years.

We studied here about introducing a new grammar with an inductive way.

After we studied about deductive and inductive ways, I read his book again

to see how he introduces a new grammar.

Some of you may know about him or his way well, but I think it can be a food

for thought.

1 Students write the date and the weather.

2 Students fill in the blank. They need to know a verb which comes in the blank.

When you teach the 7th students, they have to answer “ play “.But when you teach 8th or 9th , they might answer “ played “.







If there is a student who doesn’t understand the answer, he or she can look up the textbook. Here students can open at Program 3-1.

4 Students substitute words given by Teacher. ( eg. on Saturday, in the morning, in the afternoon, at night … etc. )








After reading a simple sentence, you make students to read aloud a question sentence.

Teacher gives some cues such as ‘ on Saturday ‘ , ‘ in the morning ‘ , ‘ in the afternoon ‘ and so on. Students substitute words given Teacher and read aloud the sentences.

5 Students identify which part of the sentence has been changed. Teacher underlines the part.

6 Teacher asks students what kind of word will be used to ask the part.

*If the answer and pronunciation were correct, every students repeat the answer.

Mr. Kitahara’s way is not a kind of an inductive way we studied here. He says that it is very important for students to repeat again and again. The key is the repetition and its quantity.

•You don’t need to be perfect.•Zero is a basement. A little progress should be praised.•Students don’t have to be understood everything just once.•Teacher should prepare for students the same kind of activities again and again.

I am going to make some power point sheets for grammar explanation in his style.
