Meet An Elite Freelance Writer – Tom Ewer

If you have ever considered whoring out words to make a living online, listen up!

In the blogs second interview we meet Tom Ewer, an elite f reelance writer.

Tom has f eatured regularly in the income report roundups and earns around $6k amonth with his writ ing.

In f act he is one of the most consistent earners in the roundups!

1) Who are you? How did you get into internet/marketingblogging?

I’m Tom, a 27-year-old guy f rom a town called Rugby in the UK. I got into internet marketing and blogging when Idecided that I wanted to quit my job.

I knew that I would need to build up a sideincome, and with litt le capital and spare timeon my hands I f elt that making money onlinewas the best option.

2) What niche(s) do you work in &why?

Primarily (in terms of the amount of money Imake) I am a f reelance blogger – clients payme to write blog posts f or them. I do itbecause it pays well; probably a lot more thanyou think!

In May 2013 I earned an equivalent hourly rate of just over $150 f rom my f reelance blogging work.

I’ve built this business up over abouteighteen months with no prior experienceand I would recommend that everyoneinterested in making money onlineconsiders f reelancing very caref ully.

Beyond that, I make money via af f iliatemarketing and sales of my own inf ormationproduct, which is a guide to making moneyf rom f reelance blogging.

Since I’ve done pretty well out of it andthere didn’t seem to be a decentcomparable book on the market, I f iguredI’d create one!

3) Which moment in yourinternet marketing career areyou most proud of?

That’s a toughie – I don’t tend to think in terms of pride that of ten.

To be honest I don’t think there’s a specif ic moment I f eel proud of , but when I ref lect upon my progress overthe last couple of years I am really proud that I have managed to build an online business out of literallynothing and with very litt le capital.

I really didn’t think it would be possible when I started but thankf ully I proved myself wrong, and it means theworld to me.

4) What are the biggest problems you’ve faced & how did you overcome them?

The usual I suppose: doubt, f ear and a lack of motivation.

Doubt is probably the easiest to overcome – just act in complete ignorance of it. Pretend it doesn’t exist.

As f or f ear, I like to work it out of the equation by making big decisions as objective as possible.

So f or instance, when I was making the decision to quit my job I f igured out how many hours I would need towork at what rate to pay my bills.

I’d then calculate the likelihood of being able to do that and f actor in worst case scenario eventualit ies thatwould prevent me f rom actually going broke. That made the whole process a lot less scary.

As f or a lack of motivation; that is something I still struggle with (and probably always will do). Motivation ebbsand f lows f or me, I just make the most of it when I have it and f ight to regain it when I lose it.

5) What are your top 3 tips for a new internet marketer just starting out

1. Read lots.

2. Take action, indiscriminately if you don’t know what to do.

3. Screw up, learn, try something else.

6) How do you decide which topics to write about?

With regards to my blog, it ’s usually based upon either what I am doing at the time or what I have done in thepast that I think would be helpf ul f or other people to read about. So that’s pretty simple.

In terms of client work I write about f reelancing, entrepreneurship, internet marketing and WordPress. Again, Itend to draw f rom what I’m doing or have done with my business f or inspiration.

7) How did you drive traf f ic to your site when you f irst started?

Like most people, I tried any number of dif f erent things: guest posting, blog commenting, social media, etc.

The common denominator was that it was less about *what* you did and more about how well you did it.

You can guest post all day long and get lit t le traf f ic if you’re not doing it well and the same goes f or just aboutevery other traf f ic building measure.

8) What services/tools do you use to manage/promote your site?

I love TweetAdder f or building my Twitter prof ile (it ’s currently ~14,000 strong). AWeber f or my email list.

Start a Blog That Matters was extremely inf luential. Market Samurai is great too.

There are others – I have the whole list over on my resources page.

9) Where can you be found online?

My blog, of course!
