ANTI-BULLYING DAYThe 2019 National Day of

Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA) has a new theme: Bullying. No Way! Take action every day.

It builds on the 2018 theme of imagining a world free from bullying and asks parents, teachers, students and mem-bers of the community to turn their big ideas into action, not just for one day, but every day.

This Friday, March 15 there will be two guest speakers as well as a screening of the movie A Girl Like Her.

ADAM PADS UP WITH JOSH HAZLEWOOD

Year 11 student Adam McGuirk notched up another amazing cricketing moment when he was in bat alongside Australia's vice-captain Josh Hazlewood. Josh was cleared to play the one-off match for his childhood club while recovering from a back injury.

Played over two weekends, Josh resumed on 31 but never settled and was out for 39. Adam batted on until he was run out for 82.

Josh also visited Gunnedah to offically open the new cricket nets at Kitchener Oval and chatted with keen cricket youngsters

Year 7 and 10 students participated in the annual Peer Excursion to Lake Keepit Sport and Recrea-tion Centre on Tuesday, February 26.

Students were accompanied by Year Advisor Natasha Constable, SLSO Michelle Hobden and Beck Henderson who organised a fun and adven-turous day for all who attended.

The students were broken up into three groups and participated in three different activities run by the amazing staff at the Sport and Recreation Centre.

The activities involved kayaking, rock climbing up trees and the mud run circuit. The activities are essential to building supportive relationships between the students and it was fantastic to watch the older students help, encourage and support the younger students through each of the chal-lenges they faced.

A great day was had by all and I am thankful to all the students who made the day such a success. - Miss Constable

GENEROUS DONATION TO SCIENCE FACULTY

In 2018, Gunnedah High School was lucky to receive a generous offer from the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE) to be a part of their ATSE STELR Project using their STELR Sustainable Housing Kits.

This involved a donation of STEM technologies and equip-ment that can be used within the Science faculty at GHS.

This donation was kindly funded by industries associated with ASTE including ORICA, Bluescope Steel and Virdian - New World Glass.

The STELR Sustainable Housing class set consists of eight stu-dent kits and two teacher kits of equipment that are specifically designed to allow up to 32 stu-dents to complete STELR Sustain-able Housing activities.

Year 8 Blue students were given an opportunity during their energy topic to explore the sustainable houses and develop new under-standing of key concepts within the unit.

We are looking forward to developing a STEM based unit on energy to focus around the amazing equipment that we have received.

DRUMMING UP POSITIVE EFFECTS

A powerful and effective program called DRUMBEAT has recently started at Gunnedah High through the initiative of the Girls Academy staff.

The program promotes confidence, teamwork, identity, communication, co-ordination, relationships, release of frustration and the ability to perform while learning to hand drum.

DRUMBEAT is facilitated by Beck Hol-land and Amie Nean Bullpitt from Wal-Health (Wallhollow Aboriginal Corpora-tion). Carys Griffith, Ability Linker support worker with Winanga-li, is a guest in the program.

Drumbeat is held in the Girls Academy room every Tuesday during recess and is available to all students. It will run for nine weeks.

Gunnedah High offers a Breakfast Club program which can be accessed through the Girls Academy room daily. Students are able to have a piece of toast, some fruit, and even a bowl of cereal. Breakfast is recognised as the most important meal of the day, and by offering healthy options students are set up to learn more effectively. The Breakfast Club would not be possible without the generous donations by the Food Pantry, Coles and Aldi. We are grateful for the continuing support. Pictured, members of the Food Pantry, Michael Szabo, Fomai Mohr and Tersa Szabo with AEO Sommar Conlan and Girls Academy's Kylie Milsom.

On Thursday, March 7 students in Years 7 and 8 participated in a special performance called Sharing Culture.

Gwenda Stanley used dance, story, artefacts and lan-guage to share with students her unique and rich Aboriginal culture.

The students had the opportunites to participate in a fun and informative way.

Gwenda hails from Moree and belongs to the Corben Gomeroi people. Gwenda brings a deep knowledge and passion for her culture to every performance.

VACCINATION FOR YOUNG ADULTS AGED 17-19 YEARS Now is a great time to check that you've had all your vaccinations so that you're protected while you study, work or travel.

Free catch-up vaccines are available from your GP as long as you start your vaccinations before you turn 20. Vaccination is safe and effective.

Not sure if you've had all your vaccinations?

The Australian Immu-nisation Register records all childhood vaccinations and provides Immunisa-tion History Statements on request, including informa-tion about any missing vac-cinations. You can request an Immunisation History Statement at any time:

• using your Medicare online account through MyGov account

• using your Medicare Express Plus App

• calling 1800 653 809

To check your adolescent vaccinations (usually given at school), call your local public health unit on 1300 066 055. We're working to get adolescent vaccination records on the AIR soon so you'll have a complete vaccination history in the one place.

Missing some vaccina-tions?

Don't worry, free catch-up vaccines are available from your GP as long as you start your vac-cinations before you turn 20. Talk to your GP about starting your catch-up schedule to make sure you're fully protected.

Vaccinations are pro-vided for Hepatitis B, Human papillomavirus (HPV), Measles-mumps-ru-bella (MMR), Menin-gococcal ACWY, Pertussis (whooping cough) included with diphtheria and tetanus (dTpa), Polio and Varicella (Chickenpox).

Gunnedah High School's rewards system acknowledges the great learning happening throughout the school.

Students receive tokens if they demonstrate attributes of the Core Values in class (pictured below). It's not about being the smartest stu-dent, it's about Respect, Responsi-bility and Doing Your Best.

Every week a token is randomly selected from each year group and a prize is awarded. This week students received a $5 canteen voucher.

WORKING SCIENTIFICALLY

Miss Constable's Year 7 Science Green class is off to a wonderful start this year.

They have been learning about the new safety and skills required as part of their Working Scientifically topic.

This topic is all about introducing stu-dents to the science laboratory, gaining invaluable skills in safety procedures, skills in working with equipment and learning how to write scientific reports, tables and graphs appropriately.

Students put their skills to action in this latest activity to write a scientfic report on the science behind boiling water. They developed skills in setting up equipment, taking temperature measurements at different intervals and recording it in suitable tables and graphing theirw results. They enjoyed working with the Bunsen burners for the first time, after obtaining their Bunsen burner licences earlier in the term.

GHS agriculture students are excited about their new project - baby chicks.

The school has received 12 chicks, and Year 9 students are readying them for the Meat Bird Pairs competition at the Royal Easter Show in April.

Agriculture head teacher Nicole Dwyer said the students learnt many skills in the lead-up to the competition.

"The kids will grow them, weigh them, [and] look after them," Ms Dwyer said.

"They learn to wash them as well, so that they get the presentation right."

There are three components to the competition - the presentation of the two best males and females; processing and judging to commercial standards; and a presentation detailing how the birds were raised and prepared for the show.

Ms Dwyer said the number of students completing agriculture at the school is higher than ever.

"We have two agriculture classes running this year, so we’ve got about 50 kids doing [it] ... It's fantastic to see the numbers growing," she said.

"There’d be over one-third of the school population doing agriculture."

The school is in the midst of expanding its agricultural program, working on a new plot on Torrens Road.

Music teacher Mr Her-rera has helped some students form a school band. They performed at assembly in Week 6 and received awesome feed-back from the students and staff.

The band is planning to perform regularly at assembly and other school events.

Thumbs up to Miss Small's Year 10 sport class who displayed excellent teamwork skills when re-threading a brand new tennis net. It was a slow, frustrating process but they all worked well together.

The annual competi-tion was launched by the memorial Society on Friday, March 1 with the optional theme of 'Is anybody there?'

Poetry awards project officer Brittany Riley said inspiration could be found "anywhere".

"In the last year, I’ve seen poems on all sorts of sub-jects - places, the weather, family drama, animals, loneliness, colour, happi-ness, conflict, love, cultural issues such as racism and so many more," she said.

"The possibilities are endless."

2018 newslettersPRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Term 1 is moving fast and we have a lot going on in our school at the moment with many academic, cultural and sport-ing activities happening.

IWD EXHIBITIONI was privileged to attend the opening of the International Women’s Day art exhibition at the Gunnedah Bicentennial Creative Arts Gallery last Friday. One of the major items amongst the works was a group compilation completed by our art students. There were also two individual works entered by Natasha Sidorenko and Ashlee McCutcheon. Many thanks to Mrs Hill and Miss Bester for their efforts in supporting this exhibition.

STUDENT BANDIt was also great to see some our students perform a music item at an assembly last week. Our music teacher Mr Herrera is doing great things with student bands and choir groups at lunchtimes, and I am so happy to see our students participat-ing in extra curricular activities such as music groups.

BASKETBALL COMPMrs Carlyon is busy organising a school-based basketball comp, so you may have your child coming to you with a permission note for this. We are hoping to increase the amount of extra curricular options for our school students, so stay tuned for more upcoming options.

YEAR 8 ADVISORI am very happy to announce that Mrs Mizzi will be the relieving Year 8 Advisor

Mr Ken White Relieving Principal

while Mrs Rose and Miss Towns are on maternity leave. In addition, I’m proud to announce that Miss Doolan and Miss Ludlow will be our Year 7 Advisors next year. They have started their planning for transition activities with Year 6 students at our partner primary schools and have many great ideas to support our Year 7 2020 students.

INTERIM REPORTSStaff are currently preparing interim reports for students in Years 7, 11 and 12. We have an upcoming Parent/Teacher night on Tuesday, April 9 in Week 11 for Years 7, 11 and 12 students so that you can discuss your child’s learning . Further details will follow.

SENIOR STUDYOur senior study operates every day and gives support to senior students with their studies. Currently Mrs Campbell and Mrs Ellis run the study and provide assistance with homework, assessment tasks and study skills, for example. This

is an excellent resource and we strongly encourage our students to use it. Year 11 and 12 students are expected to be in the study during their non face-to-face class times.

GOLF DAYPreparations for our Golf Day fundraiser on Sunday, March 24 at Gunnedah Golf Club are well under way. I hope you are getting your teams together, and I look forward to seeing you out there on the course.

FEEDBACK WELCOMEAs always, If you wish to contact me to discuss our school and/or give feedback on our programs, drop me an email to [email protected] and then I’ll follow up.
