LanguageAn increasing number of our master’s programs are taught in English. For other programs where the official language of instruction is German, a good command of the German language is needed.

Application deadlinesGenerally, applications for a master’s program can be submitted twice a year by the following dates:

Spring Semester:November 30 Fall Semester:April 30

The academic year is divided in two semesters: the Spring Semester from February 1 to July 31 and the Fall Semester from August 1 to January 31.

CostsThe University of Basel is a public university and offers equal access to its learning and research facilities for Swiss and nonSwiss students. All students pay the same tui tion fees. Currently, they are CHF 850 per academic semester. You will have to budg et for an annual amount of CHF 20,000 in total to cover study and living costs, including accommodation, food, insurances, and local transport. Note that health insurance is compulsory in Switzerland.

Worth Knowing.

Arrival and livingInternational students from outside the European Union and EFTA countries need a valid visa and a residence permit. For further information, please contact the Swiss embassy or consular service in your home country. In general, it is quite easy for students to find affordable accommodation in Basel and there are many online platforms that faci litate the search for housing. To share an apartment with fellow students is very common and a good way of keeping costs low.

The University of Basel, one of the world’s oldest universities, lies at the heart of Europe. Founded in 1460, it regularly features among the 100 top institutions worldwide in inter na tio nal rankings. Although in Basel – the host city of the University – most people speak German, its role as home to the head quarters of major corporations such as life sciences companies Novartis and Roche mean that English is commonly spoken both in the city and at the University of Basel. In this brochure, we present our English- language offerings for students, doctoral students and postdocs. We would be delight-ed if you joined us at the University of Basel.

Thanks to outstanding teaching, an inter na-tional focus, top research with a major presence in the most important academic publications and a broad financial basis, the University of Basel is one of the world’s best institutions. Each year, key university rankings place Basel among the top 100, and it is considered one of the top 10 institutions in the German-speaking region.

Basel is home to Switzerland’s oldest university, which was founded in 1460 on the initiative of the city’s inhabitants. Its eventful history is filled with prominent names: Erasmus of Rotterdam, Paracelsus, Friedrich Nietzsche and Leonhard Euler taught and studied here. Numerous museums and one of Switzerland’s most extensive libraries (with eight million docu-ments and media) bear witness to this great tradition. Today, Basel is a modern university that upholds its historical legacy while also continuing to evolve.unigeschichte.unibas.ch

One of the world’s best universities.

One of Europe’s most tradition-rich universities.

The University of Basel is a classical full university covering almost all subjects from the ancient world to zoology. Some facul ties encourage (or require) students to attend courses in other subject areas. This opens up a variety of possible combinations and creates new perspectives. Five thema tic focal areas give the University of Basel an unmistakable profile.

Comprehensive university.

Innovative degree programs.Student needs, practical requirements, and find-ings from the various sub-ject areas are constantly evolving. By continuing to offer new, interdiscipli-nary and interfaculty de-gree programs, the University of Basel con-stantly adjusts its teaching to reflect these developments.

Local, international.

Basel is a multifaceted city where carnivals meet research, and where bankers and skaters sit side by side along the Rhine, and France and Germany are just minutes away. The city’s location at this border triangle shapes everyday life, including that of the University. Eucor is a net-work of seven universities on the Upper Rhine. A joint student card enables students to attend courses in France and Germany.

India, PhD student in Biomedical Ethics

“I learned about an interesting research project in biomedical ethics at the University of Basel through a former colleague of mine. The research project at the Institute for Bio-medical Ethics in Basel looked like a perfect oppor tunity to bring to gether my training in medicine, medical anthropology and bioethics, and to carry out doctoral research in an inter-disciplinary institute. The Institute for Bio medical Ethics has been a stimulating work environment with collea gues from diverse professional backgrounds, seniors and experts in ethics from within Switzerland and Europe. This city of

Basel has a very cosmo politan, international community. Cultural influence from neighboring Germany and France is palpable in everyday life. The rich history and heritage of the Univer-sity of Basel and its particular contribution to the evo lution of medicine, its various institutes and research orga nizations of world-class reputation defini tely influenced my decision to study here. After graduating from my PhD program, I am looking forward to an interna-tional career as a researcher in bioethics and I feel well-equipped to take this path, thanks to all the training opportunities at my institute as well as at the University of Basel.”

China, PhD student in Neurobiology

“I was always curious about how the brain works and therefore decided to study neuro-biology. After completing my master’s degree in China, I wanted to do my PhD abroad in a dif-ferent culture. Most of my classmates chose to pursue their PhD in America. By chance, I ap-plied for the international PhD program at the Friedrich Miescher Institute in Basel and luckily got in vited to the interview. Before the inter-view I barely knew anything about Switzerland except for watches and banks. How ever, during the one-week interview, I was strongly impressed by the charisma of the city and the excellent research at the FMI. In retrospect, one of the best decisions I have ever made was to join the PhD program at the FMI in Basel. The FMI creates a very open and creative environment in which people are

motivated to study the most interesting re-search questions. There is lots of communica-tion and collaboration among talented people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Students are well trained in research expertise as well as soft skills. The Institute highly en courages stu-dents to propose and organize their own activities. Basel is a unique city at the borders of three countries. It is small in size but large in diversity. It is a ‘biotech center’ in central Europe with two large pharmaceutical com-panies and many promising bio technology start-ups, which bring talented people from all over the world to the city and offer many job opportunities. More importantly, Basel is a city that feels like home with a family-friendly infrastructure and a high standard of living.”

Poland, PhD student in Nanoscience

“During high school, I became fascinated by na noscience – a new, dyna mic and intriguing field of research, which demonstrates, for example, how single atoms can be manipulated. Therefore, I decided to study technical physics in Poland, since it offered the possibility to choose nano science and nanotechno logy as a specialization after two years of studies. Whilst still at university in Poland, I was performing the measure ments for my thesis in the Nano lab of the University of Basel – with a group strong in scanning tunneling microscopy. Afterwards, I started my PhD in the same group. During my PhD time, I was not only able to real-ize my dream – to manipulate single xenon atoms – but also to have a very dyna mic job filled with different activities such as work-ing with world-class, ultra-high vacuum equipment in close col-laboration with synthetic and theoretical chemists as well as with experimental and theoretical physicists, and attending top scien-tific conferences and teaching. I like Switzerland because of its world-class level of research, picturesque mountain landscape and also as the mul ticultural and open-minded city of Basel.”

India, PhD student in Biomedicine

“The primary reason I chose Basel is the fact that the city has various research institutes as well as top pharma companies that makes it a special place for research and learning. My PhD program in the field of biomedicine offers a unique experience. With more than 100 students in the program, I can easily interact and collaborate with other students, who help me in my own research. The program provides a platform for the students to acquire all the necessa ry scientific skills to carry out quality research. The yearly scientific retreat brings all the students to- gether to give them a chance to present their research – pro moting their scientific and personal development. The Univer-sity has produ ced some of the very well-known scholars and experts in their respective fields. The professors are always ready to provide their expert assistance and support new ideas for carrying out research. Basel as a city: The location of Basel on the Rhine where Switzerland, France and Ger many meet, and its connec tion to the rest of the Europe makes it a vibrant, diverse and open-minded city. The city offers lots of outdoor and re-creational activities and is a good starting point to explore the Swiss culture and the neigh boring countries.”

need to ensure that life outside the university is right for you. With great living, working and leisure opportunities, Basel is the

perfect city in which to study.

The University of Basel’s various sites are located close together in the city center. These short distances are best negotiated using the city’s extensive public transport system. Basel’s green trams are known far and wide, and the U-Abo pass enables value travel as far as the Frick Valley or even Germany. Or, better still, get yourself a bicycle. A network of cycle paths allow you to quickly travel from A to B. And if you want to venture further afield, mobility sites are located throughout the city. Catch-a-Car, a car sharing service, is cur-rently being tested.www.tnw.ch

Travel.Although Basel’s housing market can – as in many cities – be tough, attractive student accommodation is always available. The University provides support through student halls of residence and WoVe, the asso ciation for student living.www.markt.unibas.ch, www.wove.ch,
