Arrival/airport pick up You’ll be greeted by Medaille personnel and
transported to the campus. Residence hall move in When you arrive on campus, you will be
greeted by the Residential Life Staff, who
will assist you in getting settled in your new
room.
Document review Representatives from the College will check
that you have brought all necessary
documents.
Informal lunch/dinner Meet your Orientation Leader and the staff
of Residential Life, Student Involvement
Center, and the Center for Multicultural
Education & Diversity at an informal meal.

Crossing Cultures 9:00-10: 15
Main Building, Room 200 This workshop will address some of the common
communication, social, and cultural adjustments faced by
international students when they first arrive in the United
States. Understanding and Coping with
Culture Shock 10:30-11:45
Main Building, Room 200 This session will address the some of the effects that
crossing into a new culture may have on you and explore
ways to cope with the “shock” of becoming suddenly
immersed in a different, unfamiliar living and learning
environment.

Immigration 101 1:00-2:00
M102 This informational session will cover the immigration
policies and practices to which F-1 visa international
students are subject while studying and living in the U.S.
Buffalo Bisons 7:00-10:00 After a full day of workshops, it’s time to relax at Coca-
Cola Field to enjoy a Buffalo Bisons minor league
baseball game. Enjoy an American tradition with hot
dogs, popcorn and a nice cold coke!
Introduction to American College Classrooms and
Academic Culture 9:00- 12:00
M102 During this session, you’ll meet your fall faculty, be introduced
to your course syllabi, and learn about their teaching styles and
expectations for you in the classroom. You’ll also be introduced
to some important academic policies and practices at Medaille.
In addition, you’ll be introduced more generally to American
higher education practices and expectations for student behavior
and for student-faculty relationships.
Lunch with area international students
Academic Commons 4th Floor, Main Building
12:00-1:00 Enjoy lunch with experienced international students from
Buffalo area colleges and universities.
Free time 1:00-7:00 In the afternoon, you will be free to relax and pursue your own
interests (e.g., shopping, site seeing). Feel free to ask your
Orientation Leader for some guidance.
Social Activity 7:00 pm
Meet at the Main Building Circle! Enjoy a night out at the Movies! As a group, we will pick a
movie and hop on the NFTA Metro to get there and back. Your
admission tickets will be covered, but be sure to bring some
extra money for some yummy movie theater popcorn!

Individual appointments:
Today you will participate, on a rotating
basis, in three different activities between
8:30 and 1:00. You will meet individually
with:
the College’s ESL staff for
approximately 20-30 minutes for an
extended conversation during
which they will conduct an initial
evaluation of your English
proficiency;
your academic advisor to review
your fall course schedule; and
ESL tutors in the Academic Support
Center
Friday, September 3, 2010 Saturday, September 4-Monday,
September 6 You will participate in the general
College orientation program for all first-time students.

Meet your International Student Orientation Leader! Mame
Yaa Ankoma-Mensa, also known as Laydee, will be with
you throughout your orientation. Just like you, she is also
an International Student coming to Medaille from
Toronto, Canada. She is currently a Senior, the President of
the Multicultural Association, a Resident Assistant and on
the Women’s Basketball Team! She does all that while
studying to become a teacher. Laydee will be a great
resource for you as you transition to America and is very
eager to help!
