GLOBAL OWL OF THE MONTH Chui, QingQing, Ph.D in Higher Education, Hometown: Luoyan, China

QINGQING’S SUGGESTIONS

Restaurant: Blaze Pizza

Tv Show: Big Bang Theory

Movie: 3 Idiots

Activity: Hiking

Destination: Great Smoky Mountain

LEARN MORE ABOUT QINGQING CHUI:

QingQing has been in the U.S for 6 years. She got her Master Degree in Environmental

Education and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Higher Education at FAU. QingQing

is also a graduate assistant in the International Services Office. She loves nature and

hiking.

She first came as a tourist and visited FAU Environmental Center, which is

surrounded entirely by Palm trees. “It’s like a fairy tale.” She fell in love with the city

immediately. When she returned to China, she applied to the Environmental

Education program at FAU, and came back to the U.S as a student.

She loves living in the U.S because she considers her lifestyle here totally different

compared to her lifestyle in China. “Here we have more freedom, and we can do

whatever we want to do. Also, the environment here is much cleaner and healthier.”

Last but not least, she met her husband here at FAU. She misses her family, her

friends, and traditional food, and wishes her family would come here to live with her

and her husband.

IS: What is the most exciting part about being an international student?

QC: The most exciting thing of being an international student is to learn and grow up on your own: like how to cook, manage time,

save money, make friends, etc. When I was home, I always thought my parents would be there with me; but after moving here, I

had to learn everything by myself. I learned that if something happens, it’s all upon me to handle things in my life.

IS: What are some culture shocks or funny surprising moments that you have experienced so far?

QC: One funny surprising moment was when I did a road trip with three friends. We decided in just a second to take a road trip to

Atlanta, Buffalo, New York and Washing D.C. I love the freedom of going somewhere without planning ahead.

IS: How do you like FAU?

QC: Besides the perfect location nearby the beach, what I love the most about FAU is the people. The kindness, sincerity and

assistance really touches my heart. Something that sounds very easy for a student like removing holds, or opening a bank account

can turn out to be very difficult for a new international student. I got a lot of help from other students when first coming here.

IS: Which places do you wish to travel to while you are in America and which places have you already traveled to?

QC: I’ve been to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Arizona, Colorado, New York, Buffalo, Savannah, Boston, and Tennessee. I wish to

travel to North Carolina and South Carolina because my husband and I love hiking.

IS: Quote that motivates you the most?

“The water is well, the sky is well, and so the people will be well.”
