DISCUSSANTS TABLE INTERIOR DESIGN After graduating from Kansas State University in 1973, Jo went to work for a Wichita, Kansas, furniture store as a buyer and floor designer. In 1981 she was hired by Beech Aircraft Corporation, and her passion for aviation interior design was born. Since 1981 she has directed the interior and exterior design for all Beechcraft products and special edition aircraft produced in Wichita. Over the last 37 years, she has observed a number of trends in aircraft design. The most prominent is the liberal use of a variety of materials, leathers, silks, plating, custom carpets, rich wood finishes and recent “green initiatives.” The only limitations are those imposed by federal aviation regulations. With experience designing multi-million dollar senior living, entertainment, and hospitality properties, Rachel has enjoyed using a wide breadth of her design education. She also has spent over 4 years in business development, advocating for design that enhances the human experience and creates excitement for the client. Currently, she drives the interior construction team at Spaces, a leading Knoll and DIRTT dealership in Kansas City, encouraging corporate, education and healthcare clients to build more sustainably. Kali founded Kali Buchanan Interior Design in 2016, after working with many talented firms and serving industry organizations over the last decade. This experience allowed her to learn from a wide variety of designers, architects, engineers, and contractors, as well as clients. Kali Buchanan is a registered Interior Designer with a passion for human interaction in the built environment. She’s designed client-specific solutions with a modern and holistic approach. This allows for a diverse range of project types such as residential, retail, hospitality, workplace, wellness, higher education, and government spaces. After graduating from Kansas State University in 1973, Jo went to work for a Wichita, Kansas, furniture store as a buyer and floor designer. Gwen is a creative, detail-oriented, licensed interior designer that believes each design tells a unique story and should be a direct reflection of the client, their goals and aspirations. After graduating from Kansas State University in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design she worked for a firm doing construction documents, but it was her passion for healthcare design that brought her to Huelat Davis. She has always loved the idea of being able to help people and feels that this can be achieved by designing spaces that have a direct impact on patient recovery, efficiency for clinicians and a positive experience for the patient’s family. Prior to getting an interior design degree Gwen received a degree in Advertising from the University of Idaho in 1994. She has spent over 27 years moving around the world due to military relocations. It is all these moves and traveling that contributes to Gwen’s passion for designing spaces that are not only functional but also inspiring.

Megan Patchen is a 2012 Kansas State University graduate and is currently an Interior Designer/Initial Outfitter at Hoefer Wysocki in Leawood, KS. Her focus is healthcare design. She has been involved in interior finish, construction and detailing as well as FFE coordination and procurement for a variety of healthcare clinic projects. She is drawn to healthcare design for the unique challenge each project presents.

A May 2010 graduate, he began his career working in Emporia for Evergreen Design-Build. He then moved in 2017 to Timber & Stone Architecture+Design in Manhattan, KS. In 2019 Ian moved to BG Consultants in Manhattan, KS as a Project Manager. BG is a unique medium-sized firm that provides architecture; civil engineering; structural engineering; mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering; planning; and surveying. As a Project Manager he guides projects through all phases of design. Ian has experience with residential, commercial, and historic preservation projects both large and small. He also has his Construction Specification Institute - Construction Document Technologist Certification. He loves figuring out how buildings are built and designing all those crazy construction details.

Audrie is an experienced interior designer that guides the interiors studio with an integrated approach to human-centered design. With 35+ years of experience, she has served as the studio design leader for a diverse range of civic, commercial, mixed-use, healthcare, higher education, preservation and justice projects. Her successful approach to interior design is focused on carefully listening to clients’ goals and objectives, and she believes that each project is unique and requires the applications of well thought-out interior design practices and solutions.

Kate Frevert is a Textile Consultant at Stinson working with architects, designers, furniture dealers, manufacturers, upholsterers, refurbishers, and end user customers in Kansas, Missouri and Southern Illinois. Stinson is a company of designers, thinkers and makers, dedicated to creating high performance textile solutions. Kate began her career as an Interior Designer at RMTA in Kansas City in 2004 and later accepted a position as the Director of Interiors at ACI Boland in 2014. She made the switch to becoming a Sales Rep in the fall of 2014 and spent a few years as the Knoll Office Account Executive working directly with the dealer and end user customers in the Kansas City area before joining Interface in 2016 as an A+D Sales Rep for Western Missouri and Kansas. Kate has a passion for design and loves to work with so many great people, helping them to find textile solutions every day!

Debra Ryan has 33 years of general interior design experience in the Kansas City area, and has been the Director of Interiors at Bell/Knott & Associates for the past 28 years. Debra has acted as a project manager on a variety of projects with responsibilities including development and coordination of programming, space planning, finish/furnishing selections and specification, furniture design and construction documents, move management and construction administration on interior projects. As Director of Interiors, Debra oversees all aspects of the interior design services for the firm in addition to management of the interior design staff. She is also responsible for coordination of Interiors Services with Architectural drawings and specifications.

After working in the intricacies of the furniture world at encompas, Hillary made the jump to education design, joining Hollis + Miller Architects in 2018. Since then, she has helped establish FF&E standards for the firm while working on K-12 public education projects, merging her passions for life-long learning, mission-fit furniture and supportive design. Hillary has held an NCIDQ certificate since 2017 and is currently serving on the College of Human Ecology Alumni Advisory Board and the Executive Board of the IIDA Mid-America Chapter as President-Elect.

With 20+ years of experience in Architecture & Design, coupled with over a dozen years of experience in architectural metal, Roger is able to understand the design intent - offer solutions that respond to design, schedule & budget - and then, as Marketing Director for SSM, he is able to effectively communicate that information to the fabrication & field operations such that the Designer’s vision can be successfully executed.

Shelby graduated from the KSU Interior Design program in 2015. Since that time, she has been designing private aircraft at Textron Aviation. The company is located in Wichita, Kansas, her hometown. At the beginning of Shelby’s career, she worked on the Beechcraft product line alongside another KSU alumni. Today, she is working on the Cessna products. In both roles, Shelby has been exposed to new product development, production aircraft, and aftermarket refurbishments.

Ally is a designer that guides the practice of interior design to all market sector projects with a portfolio built on higher education, commercial, justice and healthcare expertise. With 4+ years of experience, she influences design through research, creativity and functionality. Her knowledge of spatial design, aesthetics and her accomplished graphic sills provide inspired and well curated interior environments. Ally approaches her with a commitment to develop well thought-out design solutions with originality and thoughtfulness. Collaboration and exceptional design are her super powers.

Em graduated from K-State in 2013 and joined the design team at the John A Marshall Co in Lenexa, KS. There, she worked on a variety of corporate projects space planning and specifying Herman Miller furniture based on current placemaking concepts. After three years at JAMCO, Em accepted a design position at Salt Creek Interior Design in her home town of Hutchinson, KS. Salt Creek takes on both residential and commercial projects in and around the Hutchinson area. Working for a small design business has its benefits; no two days are ever the same which keeps the work very interesting!

Heather is a 2006 graduate from the interior design program at Kansas State University. She began her career as an interior designer at Health Facilities Group in Wichita, KS where she spent 7 years designing & managing a variety of healthcare projects. Projects ranged from large scale replacement hospitals to skilled care facilities. Heather also worked for the Blythe Group in Grand Junction, CO where she gained experience in corporate, education, & hospitality design. After 9 years as an interior designer she accepted a position with Kansas State University as the Assistant Director of Campus Planning & Space Management. Her current role allows her to focus on space planning which is an area of design that she particularly enjoys. Heather’s responsibilities include: managing the space allocations for the University, collecting & maintaining space data, project management coordination, and space planning for future needs. Heather has been NCIDQ certified since 2008 and is currently a member of the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) and APPA.

California born and Colorado grown, Sydney Hall graduated from Kansas State’s Interior Design program in 2013 as well as obtaining a minor in Theatre Arts. She is currently a Registered Interior Designer in the State of Missouri and practicing at ACI Boland Architects in Kansas City. Sydney’s experience in design spans from healthcare, K-12 and higher education, corporate, to government work. Her client-focused and collaborative approach to design is what keeps her motivated and inspired.

Laura Mattson graduated in 1985 from KSU Interior Design program. Laura has experience as a commercial interior designer for corporations, schools, churches and retail. For the last 13 years Laura has worked for Health Facilities Group. HFG specializes in healthcare architecture with offices in Wichita, Kansas City and Tulsa. Laura is HFG’s Director of Interior Design responsible for training new employees, setting company design standards, equipment planner, reviews architectural plans for compliance with Facility Guidance Institute (FGI) and designs her own projects throughout the Midwest.

Pilar Wiley, IIDA, has designed for the workplace, entertainment, and retail sectors at BRR Architecture for nearly 13 years. Half of that time has been spent focusing on transforming AMC movie theatres all over the country. She works closely with the client by guiding them to make decisions that best help them meet their goals in the entertainment industry. She is involved in all phases of design working on multiple remodel and new build projects at one time. Her lead design position collaborates with multiple vendors and consultants to complete the design process. Over the past few years she lead the redesign of their “remodel” prototype and created the new “luxe” project protype for AMC.

Anna Opie serves BRR as an HR Generalist and assists with recruitment strategy and benefit support for the firm’s employees. Prior to joining the HR team in 2014, she provided project administrative support to several of BRR’s regional offices, working with teams to coordinate permitting sets and track client contracts. Anna originally was an elementary school teacher for eight years before joining BRR Architecture in 2010.

Heather is a proud graduate of Kansas State University. She received her degree in Interior Design in May 2015. After graduating, Heather worked at Black and Veatch for 10 months in the telecom department. In October 2018, she received her NCIDQ. Heather currently works at Hollis + Miller Architects; a firm focused on educational design in Kansas City, Missouri. She is about to celebrate her 3 year anniversary with the company.

Erin graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Design in 2013 and has been around design and the building process her whole life. She was an intern with Scott Rice for 18 months before moving into the Project Integrator position in the fall of 2013 coordinating all projects within the Manhattan community and surrounding areas. She has managed projects such as CivicPlus, KSU Vanier Football Complex, the KSU Engineering Phase IV project, KSU College of Business, and Salina South and Central High Schools. Recently she took a position in the Scott Rice Lenexa office as a Project Manager for their KU Hospital account.

At DLR Group, Madeline develops concept and designs for materials and finishes; does space planning, programming, and layouts; is in charge of overall production and coordination of drawings on her projects. Madeline finds great interest in learning and understanding what motivates people, how they work, and how to then make their environment that much better through occupant-centered design. Madeline has been in the industry for a total of 6 years, prior to DLR Group she spent 2 years in Vail, CO as a high residential designer.

After graduating in 2013, Will Fisher began his career at Compass Design + Build in Overland Park, Kansas. Working for an architect who is also a contractor, Will has gained a wealth of knowledge in renovation projects ranging from residential to commercial. In March of 2015, Will obtained a new position at a small boutique firm called Clockwork Architecture + Design in Kansas City. As a designer at Clockwork, Will works directly with an architect and has worked on a variety of projects, including a multifamily unit and small office design. As he continues in the workforce, he plans to apply the skills he has learned while in school and throughout his career toward other entrepreneurial opportunities.

She also currently serves on the dean’s advisory board for WSU’s Barton School of Business; the Board of Directors for the Wichita Family Crisis Center, and the executive committee for the Heartland of America Chapter of the National ESOP Association. Before joining GLMV, Susan worked in HR roles with newspaper publishing and municipal government. She also worked in retail accounting, sales and customer service roles while earning her BA in Psychology and MS in Business Administration at Wichita State University.

Kaitlyn is a 2017 graduate of the Interior Design program with a minor in Leadership Studies. She is an Associate Interior Designer at HNTB Architecture in Kansas City. Her focus is in sports architecture where she has had experience in presentations, finish selections and construction documents for the new Raiders Stadium in Las Vegas.

Jillian graduated in May 2015 from Kansas State with a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design. Originally from Colorado, she attended K-State’s design program for its challenging environment and developed the confidence to apply her creativity to tangible projects in a professional field. Upon graduation, Jillian accepted a position in New York City where she designed high-end private residential properties in the Bahamas and upstate New York. She recently moved to Kansas City with her husband and is now working in the commercial field for an umbrella company of Scott Rice called CIC. She works as a Project Manager for Division 12 Window Roller Shades where she bids projects, red-line shop drawings, select shade cloth finishes, and more.

Samantha has more than thirteen years of experience in the interior design profession. She currently is a sales representative for Knoll with a focus on the commercial office, healthcare and governments spaces. Her excitement and passion for the furniture industry and its impact on the way we live and work is contagious. Samantha strives to help make every project she is a part of a success. She has worked on commercial, education, hospitality, student life and civic projects while working at Pear Workplace Solutions, gkkworks and TreanorHL as a designer.

She holds a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design from Kansas State University, is a member of the International Interior Design Association, Women in Healthcare, serves on the K-State Apparel, Textiles and Interior Design Advisory Board and she holds a National Council for Interior Designers certificate. Samantha is a graduate of the Downtown Denver Partnership Leadership Program as well as served on their Annual Awards Jury.

Catie is a 2008 graduate from the interior design program at Kansas State University. After graduation, Catie worked for Gossen Livingston Associates in Wichita, KS which due to a merger is now GLMV Architecture. In the past 7 years that Catie has been with GLMV, she has designed and completed a variety of project types across a broad range of markets. Her primary focus is education and government, with years of experience in designing for the general government, as well as for elementary and middle schools, universities and corporate entities. As a LEEP AP and NCIDQ-certified interior designer, Catie’s work puts her at the intersection of interiors and sustainable design.

An active member in the community, Catie has served on the IIDA Wichita City Center committee since graduation as Student Chair, Programs Chair and City Center Director. Due to her natural curiosity and passion for learning, she was instrumental in forming networking opportunities for the Wichita chapters of AIA, USGBC, PGASLA, SMPS, CFMA, IFMA, ASHRAE, NAWIC and SEAKM in order to learn more about other aspects of the architectural business.

Emily is a 2003 graduate of Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design. After graduation, Emily began her career in Topeka, Kansas at a commercial furnishings dealership and Interior Design firm, BA Designs, LLC. Throughout her 13 years at BA Designs, Emily gained extensive knowledge in product design, material specifications, and overall project management.

Currently, Emily is an Interiors Project Manager for HTK Architects in Topeka. Joining the Interiors team at HTK has created further opportunities to provide well-researched, collaborative design solutions for each project’s interior environment. She is passionate about staying educated in the Architectural and Design industry not only to foster creativity and innovation, but to promote the well-being of individuals interacting within the designed space.

In addition to industry experience, Emily served as an Adjunct Professor at Kansas State University during the 2011-2012 school year for 2nd year Interior Design studios. When she is not at work she enjoys spending time outdoors with family and friends.

Emma is a 2015 graduate of the interior design program at Kansas State University. She started her career working in Oxford, England for a non-profit organization called Engineering Ministries International (EMI). At EMI, Emma joined a multi-disciplinary design team in developing a conceptual master plan for an orphan transition home in Kampala, Uganda. This opportunity perfectly united Emma’s drive for design rooted in her passion for people. After returning to the States, Emma obtained a position at HOK Kansas City on their Corporate/Commercial Team, which primarily focuses on workplace design. In this role, Emma has contributed to all aspects of the design process for various commercial projects locally and nationwide.

After graduating from Iowa State’s Interior Design program in 2004, Shannon began her design career as an entry-level designer at DLR Group (Kansas City), where she spent 6 years designing K-12 Education projects. In 2010, Shannon took on a new position with Hoefer Wysocki Architecture, where she focused on Healthcare and Government design for 3 years. December 2013 brought a new opportunity for Shannon when she decided to transition over to the dealership side and began working for Kansas City’s Architecture and Design community, providing insight on product knowledge, design services and workplace solutions for all market sectors. She works closely with the Kansas City Design Community and enjoys collaborating with local designers. Shannon is also involved with IIDA and is currently the City Center Director for Kansas City’s chapter.

Amy Migliazzo is the owner of Amiglia Design Group. She is a commercial and residential Interior Designer and construction project leader, with 20 years in the industry. Her goals are to bring sustainable and healthy design and process improvement to clients.
