PROPOSALS

Proposal 1-InfluencesHoward TangyeFashion Illustration

Howard Tangye’s fashion illustrations were the main influence on my first proposal, other than Egon Schiele. Tangye’s use of both rough and delicate lines was the primary aspect that I incorporated into my proposal. The sensitive lines reminded me of Egon Schiele’s drawings but the contrast of materials explored the negative space.

Proposal 1From taking photographs, I created illustrations that were based on Tangye’s energetic mark making and his contrast of line. I then worked into the drawings with pencil to form the delicate quality of the finer sections of Tangye’s work. I found that using a loose grip and vigourous motion produced expressive mark making and was my favourite element to these proposals.

Proposal 2-InfluencesEgon SchieleGoing back to one of my original influences of this project, I looked into Schiele’s softer artworks, exploring how he uses colour and the marks that he uses within the artworks. These two examples were the specific pieces that have influenced my second proposal. When looking through Schiele’s works, I came across his washy pieces looking at how he manipulated the brush strokes to mould the subjects body. I also admired his adventurous colour palette. In the piece “Standing girl in Blue Dress” I found the use of a dynamic white outline made the figure stand out of the page.

Proposal 2Taking influence from Schiele, I concentrated on the colour palette I used varying tones and attempting to apply the swashes of colour in a segregated fashion so that the colour was clear similar to Schiele. As well as watercolour washes, I worked into the illustrations using colour pencil. The colour pencil help to make the edges more refined. To finish off my illustrations I created a white outline, replicating the graphic use of white in the piece “standing girl in blue dress”.

Proposal 3-InfluencesDail Fried - Collograph Print

Dail Fried’s collagraph prints reminded me of the organic sections within Gustav Klimt’s work. I love the vibrant colours used within “The Kiss” and would like to replicate this energy through the use of print making. Dail Fried uses the collagraph technique to produce her abstracted prints. Collagraph is the technique of using a plate composed of materials, glued to a supporting surface. Fried exploits the outcomes of collography embracing the use of line and texture, overlapping surfaces.

Proposal 3

Inspired by Fried’s exploitation of the collograph printing, I experimented intensely with the textural outcomes, forming tests with a variety of materials. I then created a plate that followed the overlapping aesthetic combining/layering materials to produce and abstracted outcome, looking at the aesthetic of Gustav Klimt’s natural elements in his work. I firstly printed in black and white to clearly see the mark making effects. I then progressed to printing with colour as I wanted to capture the vibrancy of colour that appears in both Fried’s and Klimt’s work. I discovered from my experimentation that I prefer the prints that were formed the second time round through the press as they produced a larger tonal range.

DevelopmentReflection

Inspiration

From my first proposal, I was pleased with how the crayon gave off a rough textured effect and this is a characteristic that I would like to continue. However I also liked how I used a variety of tone in my second proposal. Finally my print looked at a different element, texture and mark making. From the proposals I would like to combine certain characteristics from each to develop.

Developing my proposals, I would like to combine the materials, crayon, watercolour and the use collograph printing. However I think that I would like to work towards life-size illustrations as then I think my pieces would have a bigger impact. I also would like to investigate using embroidery on my illustrations to emphasise the delicate lines. I also would like to experiment with the composition overlaying the illustration on a print- inspired by the image above.
