“Sal” Tolone and his wife Irene met almost 30 years ago while working in the same office. “After our first date, I knew I was going to marry her because we blended so well when we danced,” remembers Sal.

There is symmetry to their love story: this is the second marriage for both of them and they each have three daughters from their previous marriages. All six of the Tolones’ daughters were in their wedding party.

Now retired, the couple has been married for 26 years, and dancing is still one of their passions. If you know where to go, you might find them dancing the Foxtrot or swaying to Sal’s favorite song, “Lady” by Kenny Rogers. “That song is meant for Irene and I,” says Sal.

The Tolones love to go dancing. Whenever there is a dance at one of their local community centers, Sal and Irene are there. Sal says that dinner dances are a great

way for anyone to have an inexpensive and fun night out. “For $10 a person you get a really nice dinner, a DJ, and dancing—and it’s just great.”

They often attend dances at the Calimesa, Redlands, and Plantation community centers. “They know us now,” Sal laughs. They also have friends who enjoy going to the dances, and they will often go as a group. “Community dances give couples an opportunity to “get gussied up and go out,” and though they have never taken any formal dance

lessons, that has never slowed them down. “You just go back to how you danced in the 40s, 50s, and 60s and just put it together,” says Sal. “It’s a lot of fun.”

Ready For AnythingBoth Sal and Irene are also active in their neighborhood Com mun ity Emergency Response Team (CERT) program. In 2004, Sal, Steve and Janice McGill, Karl Benink, and Andy Sendis—Serrano Del Vista residents—recognized the importance of having a

CERT members are trained to help as “first responders” in areas like search and rescue, first aid, triage, and responding to the needs of people in the community who may be hurt—until emergency professionals can get to the scene. The Serrano Del Vista CERT program teaches regular classes to train community members how to be prepared and able to respond in the event of an emergency.

Sal and Irene are part of their neighbor-hood community of 34 government trained CERT members and an equal number of volunteers. Banning’s mayor, Debbie Franklin, also CERT trained, is very supportive of the Serrano Del Vista CERT Team’s disaster preparedness efforts.

Keeping active togetherThe Tolones enjoy being toge ther, in fact, Irene says, “we do everything together, and love it. We have respect and love for each other—it keeps a marriage together”

In addition to dancing, Sal and Irene stay active with frequent water aerobics classes at the pool in their gated community of Serrano Del Vista. The Tolones also enjoy going tent camping whenever they can— “the real deal,” Sal says—at Lake Perris or Lake Skinner.

Irene encourages Sal to take almost daily walks with her. “We keep ourselves fit,” says Sal, “and sometimes it’s hard…you have to force yourself to do it. The only way you’re going to be healthy is by staying active.” Irene, who Sal affection ately calls his “social

What is CERT?The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a national program that educates communities in disaster pre paredness, team organization, disaster medical operations, disaster fire suppression, and search and rescue operations. Certified members and volun teers act as first responders in the event of an emergency, working with local Fire and Police departments.

DISASTER PREPAREDNESS TIPS: Have a “go bag,” a disaster supplies kit, on

hand with food, water and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least 72 hours

Have and emergency escape plan for disasters and communicate it to all loved ones.

If you or a loved one are housebound, wheelchair bound, sight or hearing impaired—make sure your CERT community or police station knows ahead of time. Provide them with your address and your needs, so they are able to come and assist you if there is an emergency

Visit the CERT website at www.fema.gov/community-emergency-response-teams for more tips and resources about how to plan and be prepared for emergencies, and to find a CERT program near you.

FIVE REASONS TO GET OUT ON THE DANCE FLOOR

1 Dancing improves your balance. The repetitive motions of dancing strengthen your muscles.

2 Dancing is good for your heart and lungs. At the right intensity, dancing can be a great low-impact cardiovascular workout.

3 Dancing is exercise for your brain as well as your body. Research shows that dancing can improve cognitive ability in people of all ages.

4 Dancing can be a social activity. Staying engaged with others in the community adds to a person’s sense of wellbeing.

5 Dancing is fun! Whether you like to shake it to salsa or prefer to glide through a waltz, moving your body to the music is a fun way to stay in shape and keep your body healthy.

Don’t miss out on reaping the benefits of dancing. With so many different types of dancing to choose from, there is something for everyone. Contact your local senior or community center today to see what kinds of dance classes or events they offer or check out dance classes on page 6 – 7.

director,” is also part of a weekly card club. She and five other women meet every Monday to play cards and socialize. She is also an avid gardener with a very green thumb, and their garden is a “marvel” according to Sal.

For Sal, who collects antique watches, and Irene who loves to crochet, each day is filled with new adventures. “We take [life]

one day at a time. The clock doesn’t mean anything to us.”

What advice do Sal and Irene have for those who want to live happy and full lives? “Think positive in your life! Go for your yearly check ups, and watch what you eat.” Sal also advises to take pleasure in the little things. “Find something you enjoy,“ says Sal, “and getting out and being active is fun.”

Your Inter Valley health Plan Dental Coverage: Make sure your procedure is covered

Make the most of your dental benefits without any costly surprises. In addition to medical coverage,

Inter Valley Health Plan also provides dental coverage. As with any insurance plan, it’s important to understand what’s covered and what’s not covered for your dental benefits.

Below are a few pointers to help you maximize your dental coverage through Inter Valley and avoid out-of-pocket expenses.

Make sure your dentist is contracted with Dental Health Services (DHS). This is critical!

Bring your Inter Valley Health Plan Evidence of Coverage document to your appoint ments; that way, you and the office staff can review your coverage to ensure the services you’re getting are covered, and that you’re receiving all your benefits. Dental procedures on this document are identified by ADA codes— a standardized code for dental services outlined by the American Dental Association.

Know your copays and make sure the dentist’s office charges you correctly. The Evidence of Coverage document includes a schedule explaining the copayments for each covered dental procedure. Some procedures have extra charges for specialized materials, like upgraded metals. Also, remember that one tooth can require multiple treatments, and each treatment for the tooth would have its own copayment.

Beware of upgrades and extras. The dentist or staff may try to “up-sell” you on upgraded or additional services that might not be covered. Be sure to check your Evidence of Coverage to find out whether the service is covered; if it’s not covered, you’re responsible for payment.

Don’t agree to any treatment you feel unsure about. Don’t be afraid to ask as many questions as you need of the dentist and staff to fully understand the recommended treatment plan.

Find out more if you’re unsure. You’re welcome to discuss any concerns and questions about your benefits and suggested dental treatments with a Dental Health Services specialist before agreeing to the treatment plan.

Questions? Concerns? Call to speak to a DHS Member specialist at 18886451261 or TTY/TDD 18886451257 for hearing impaired.

Paper, Pen and Zen proved to be the most popular Express Yourself Creative Station at the Second Annual Women’s Changing Aging Roles. Over 100

women experienced creativity through art, dance and music at the event held at The dA Center for the Arts, a very unique downtown Pomona gallery.

The affair was a true collaboration between Inter Valley Health Plan, Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, Community Senior Services, University of LaVerne, Chaffey College and Hillcrest Retirement Community.

Women in attendance heard from keynote speakers: Cynde Miller, an art instructor at Chaffey College and her mother Darla Ferris Miller, also an artist. The women were then encouraged to find creativity in every-day circumstances by the next speaker, Cynthia Moran, Vice Mayor of Chino Hills. Other contributors included: Claremont’s Yael Steinfeld, who lead a dance demonstration; Lorie Eber, Wellness Coach, who spoke of reinventing yourself; and Elizabeth Courtney of Upland who shared her collection of costume jewelry, some pieces dating back to the 1800’s.

Pomona’s Melinda Williamson said the most valuable part of her day was “doing jointly spontaneous creative things with my daughter.”

Look for information on the Third Annual Women’s Changing Aging Roles in upcoming issues of InterView or at www.forhealthandliving.com. We hope to see you there.

Do you Know the to

People diagnosed with diabetes, high blood pressure, or congestive heart failure (or a family history of any of these diseases), are

at risk of also having a heart attack and/or stroke. Taking medication is not enough to prevent cardiovascular disease—or the complications. Ask your doctor for your blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure scores and how you can decrease your risk of cardiovascular disease.

is for the A1c Test (for people diagnosed with diabetes)

The A1c test measures the percentage of sugar in your blood. Controlling your blood sugar is the key to reducing your risk of stroke or heart attack. If you are working to lower your blood sugar levels, you should have an A1c blood test regularly (every three months or how often your doctor recommends for your goals).

Regular A1c testing helps you and your doctor:

Verify the results of your daily self-tests and compare them to the A1c result.

Assess your plan for blood-sugar/diabetes man-age ment. The result is your diabetes “report card.”

See how your lifestyle changes (eating healthier & exercising more) affect your blood sugar. In general, every percentage point drop in the A1c blood test results (for example from 7% to 6%) reduces the risk of kidney, eye and nerve disease by 40%.

Your diabetes is “in control” when your score is less than 7%. If it is higher than 7%, talk to your physician about what you can do to lower your blood sugar and keep it under control consistently. Ask if your treatment and/or if your medication dosage needs adjusting. Ask what kinds of lifestyle changes you can make to improve your control of blood sugar.

The A1c test doesn’t take the place of daily self-testing blood sugar levels. You need real-time information for the day-to-day management of

your blood sugar; (you can’t adjust your insulin doses based on an A1c result.)

With a combination of daily self-testing and an A1c test (two to four times annually), and your doctor’s advice, you will be well-equipped to keep your blood sugar under control.

Aspirin the other

Aspirin is often prescribed to treat hardening of the arteries. When plaque (a fatty material) builds up in the artery walls, blood flow is reduced. A blood clot can form on the plaque, block the artery, and cut off blood flow which raises the risk of heart attack or stroke. Aspirin, a blood thinner, helps keep blood clots from forming—reducing the risk of blockage. (Also used after a stent placement, aspirin helps keep blood clots from forming on the stent.)

Tips for Taking Aspirin Safely

Your aspirin dosage should prescribed by your doctor and be based on your specific health history. Tell your doctor about any other medications you take and if you have a history of ulcers or bleeding problems.

Ask your physician if you need to stop taking aspirin before having surgery or dental work.

Develop a routine. For example, take aspirin with the same meal each day.

A1c Control – This long-term blood sugar measurement should be less than 7%.

Aspirin therapy – Prescribed dosages can prevent blood clots and artery blockage.

Blood pressure control – Keep pressure lower than 130/80 mmHg.

Cholesterol management – Your LDL (bad cholesterol) should be less than 100mg/dl.

Stop Smoking – Ask your doctor about medications or treatments to help you quit.

avoid Heart disease?

Don’t take more than prescribed. A low dose gives the same benefit as a higher one, with lower risk of side-effects.

Don’t skip doses. To be effective, aspirin must be taken every day.

When to Call Your Doctor

The side effects of aspirin are not usually serious. If you have problems, a dosage change may help. Call your doctor if you have any of the following:

Excessive bruising (some bruising is normal)

Nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or any excessive bleeding

An upset stomach or stomach pain

Blood labs usually take patients on a first come, first

serve basis. Making an appointment to get your blood drawn will give you priority over those who just walk in. If you are fasting, it’s a good idea to make an early appointment to get in and out quickly.

You can schedule your appointment online if your medical group uses LabCorp for blood tests at www.labcorp.com.

HIGH DESERT STAR SEARCH

The sixth Annual High Desert Star Search was held Saturday, March 29 at Victor Valley College. More than 80 performers enter tained almost

500 guests. This year’s show co-sponsored by Inter Valley Health Plan and Heritage Victor Valley Medical

group, attracted our largest audience so far. People were even watching on a TV screen in the lobby. Master of Ceremonies, John Lynd, once again added humor and professionalism to the event. We thank Victor Valley College for their support during auditions, dress rehearsal and the day of the event as well as all who performed and attended.

BLOCK WALK

Over 125 “walkers” gathered at Desert Valley Foundation Friday

morning, April 11, to participate in the annual Block Walk. The group, wearing their new Block Walk t-shirts, stopped at Inter Valley’s Victorville Medicare Information & Vitality Center for a short refreshment break during the 1.5 mile round-trip. Thanks to all walkers, vendors and Desert Valley Medical Group for partnering with us on this event!

DRIVE WELL CONFERENCE

Many of us may have to ask ourselves or a loved one when to give up the

car keys. As we age we may experience functional and/or medical changes that affect our ability to drive safely. Inter Valley Health Plan and Claremont’s Community Senior Services hosted the 1st annual Drive Well Confer ence focusing on these issues. Representatives from Los Angeles County Sheriffs, Pomona Valley Transportation Authority and Certified Driving Specialists shared driving safety tips and transportation options. If you experience any of the following: inability to read road signs, losing control of the car, head turning difficulty, moving your foot from pedal to pedal, dizziness or confusion on the road—speak to your doctor, driving professional or a family member before you experience any unfortunate mishaps.
