Plasma: Straw coloured liquid composed of mainly water. Carries dissolved substances.

Red cells (RBC): Contain haemoglobin which carries O2.

White cells (WBC): Several types, involved in killing pathogens.

Blood also contains, hormones, digested food products, waste substances, dissolved O2 & CO2.

Platelets: Cell fragments that play a role in the clotting of blood.

Functions of Blood CellsActivity 2.1Based on the photomicrograph on slide 8 (and below) explain the significance of having so many of the component “a” in blood.

Structure “a” are red blood cells. The role of red blood cells is to transport oxygen. Oxygen is a very important gas that is needed in the body for aerobic cellular respiration which releases energy from sugars to be used for metabolic reactions. The large numbers of red blood cells ensures that large amounts of oxygen can be transported. Red blood cells are also able to transport carbon dioxide away from cells to be exhaled in the lungs.
