ICE MAKER R E Q U I R E M E N T S

To properly make and store ice, the Model315I(P) requires access to air, potable water,115 V AC electrical supply and a drain. Theice maker must be installed indoors, in acontrolled environment.

A I R S U P P LY

The ice maker uses a fan to take in room air atthe front of the ice maker through the rightside of the kickplate/grille. It discharges warmair out the left side of the kickplate/grille.Anything placed in front of the kickplate/grillewill restrict air flow and cause a decrease inperformance and efficiency. The minimum airtemperature the ice maker will operate in is50˚F (10˚C), and the maximum is 100˚F (40˚C).

WAT E R S U P P LY

The ice maker requires a continuous supply ofpotable water at no less than 20 psi (1.4 bar) offlowing pressure. Static water pressure shouldnot exceed 80 psi (5.5 bar). The minimumwater temperature the ice maker will operatein is 40˚F (5˚C), and the maximum is 100˚F(40˚C).

WAT E R Q U A L I T Y

There is no such thing as “pure” water. Allwater, including potable water supplied bymunicipalities, contains some impurities.Water absorbs impurities from the air as rainand as it flows through the ground. Some ofthe impurities are solid particles; these areknown as suspended solids and a fine particlefilter will remove them. Other impurities arechemically bonded to the water molecules andcannot be filtered out; these are calleddissolved solids.

Ice made by the Model 315I(P) will have alower mineral content than the water fromwhich it was formed.

Water with fewer impurities will freeze morequickly. This occurs because impurities causethe water temperature to rise. This concen-trates most of the impurities in the ice makerwater reservoir where they may form harddeposits known as scale. The Model 315I(P)dilutes the concentration of minerals by over-filling the reservoir during the harvest cycle(with the excess water flowing down thedrain). About three quarts of water flow intothe unit each cycle. About one quart of thatrinses the reservoir and goes down the drain.

Some impurities will inevitably remain and willstick to the inner parts of the ice maker result-ing in malformed ice cubes. Built up mineralscale can shorten the life of your ice maker.

To keep the ice maker operating properly, these impurities or minerals will have to beregularly dissolved by an acid cleaning usingSub-Zero ice maker cleaner. Directions forcleaning the Ice Making System are onpage 18.

In general, it is always a good idea to filter thewater. A water filter, if it is the proper type, canremove taste and odors as well as particles. Some methods of water treatment fordissolved solids include reverse osmosis andpolyphosphate feeders. A reverse osmosissystem should include post treatment tosatisfy the reverse osmosis water’s ”aggres-siveness”. Deionized water is not recom-mended.

Because water softeners exchange one mineralfor another, Sub-Zero does not recommendtheir use for ice makers. Where water is veryhard, softened water may result in white, mushy cubes that stick together.

If there are questions about the purity ofyour water, contact a local point-of-use waterspecialist in your area for recommendations onwater treatment.

A R E A R E Q U I R E M E N T S

Before moving the ice maker in place, be surethe finished opening dimensions, electrical andplumbing locations are accurate. Refer to theInstallation Specifications illustrations onpages 7–8. The illustrations below provideoverall dimensions for Models 315I and 315IP.

Be sure your plumber, electrician and cabinetinstaller have this information before finishingwork is completed.

Model 315I is a gravity drain model thatrequires a drain tube that is pitched down fromthe outlet at the back of the unit to the sanitarysewer connection. Model 315IP has a built indrain pump that will pump water up to a drainpoint, such as a nearby sink. Refer to specifica-tions on pages 7–8.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If the ice maker isinstalled in a corner, the door swing may belimited due to handle contact with the wall orcabinet face.

PLUMBING R E Q U I R E M E N T S

Rough in the water supply line. Connect a 1/4”OD copper line to the house supply. Be sure touse an easily accessible shut-off valve betweenthe supply and the unit. This shut-off valveshould not be installed behind the unit. Do notuse “self-piercing” valves. A saddle valve (part#4-20-088-0) is available from your Sub-Zerodealer. A line filter is required when the watersupply has a high mineral content. The watersupply must maintain 20 psi (1.4 bar) to 80 psi(5.5 bar) of water pressure.

The water supply and drain should be roughedin and ready at the point of installation. Anelectrical outlet directly behind the ice makerwill make the installation easier. All electrical, water and drain connections must conform tolocal codes. For location of the water supply, refer to the Installation Specifications illustra-tions on pages 7–8.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Although the Model315I(P) has been designed to be serviced inplace, in some cases it may be necessary topull the unit out for service. For that reason donot restrict access to the unit at the front, topand bottom.

If a floor is to be installed after the ice maker, shims the thickness of the floor should beinstalled under the Model 315I(P) to keep theice maker level with the floor. Also, allow 1/8"(3) clearance on each side of the unit forprotruding screw heads.

Installations on a slab: Use a Model 315IP,with built-in drain pump and pump the waterto the point of drainage. Drain pump modelswill pump one story high.

Installations over a crawl space orbasement: Either a gravity drain (Model 315I)or a drain pump (Model 315IP) unit may beused. If there is not enough room behind theice maker for a drain/waste water receptacle, the drain will have to be below the floor.

IMPORTANT NOTE: All plumbing must meetlocal codes.

ELECTRICAL R E Q U I R E M E N T S

A 115 V AC, 60 Hz, 15 amp circuit breaker andelectrical supply are required. A separatecircuit is required for each unit.

The Model 315I(P) is equipped with a powersupply cord with a 3-prong grounding plug, which must be plugged into a mating 3-pronggrounding-type electrical outlet.

Follow the National Electrical Code and localcodes and ordinances when installing thereceptacle. For location of the electrical supply, refer to the Installation Specifications illustra-tions on pages 7–8.

IMPORTANT NOTE: A ground fault circuitinterrupter (GFCI) is not recommended andmay cause interruption of operation.

Do not use an extension cord or two-prong adapter. Electrical ground isrequired on this appliance. Do not removethe power supply cord ground prong.

Shut off the power to the electricaloutlet.

The drain and inlet water tubes must beplumbed before connecting to the ice maker.Refer to the illustrations below. All horizontalruns of drain lines must have a 1/4" (6) per 12"(305) fall. An air gap will likely be requiredbetween the ice maker drain tube and thedrain/waste water receptacle. A stand pipewith a trap below it can be used for thedrain/waste water receptacle.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Poor drainage will causea high rate of ice melting in the ice storage bin.

1) Place the ice maker in front of the installa-tion opening. Adjust leveling legs to theapproximate height.

2) Remove the door (with hinges), controlknob, control panel, access panel and lowerface plate.

3) Route the water inlet line (1/4" OD coppertube) from the wall through the ice makerto the front.

The ice cubes are tapered cylinders about 11/4"(32) in diameter at the widest end; taper downto 1" (25) wide at the top; and are 11/8" (29)high. When the ice maker is adjusted properly, there should be a 1/4" (6) indent in the base ofthe cube. The ice will appear wet when freshand may also develop frost on the outside andlook cloudy. This is normal. The frost willdisappear when liquid is poured over the ice.

I C E S TO R A G E B I N

All restaurant-type ice makers, such as theModel 315I(P), operate on this principal: Theice storage bin is not refrigerated; instead it’sheavily insulated, much like a picnic cooler orice chest. If the ice storage bin were to berefrigerated, the ice would freeze together intoone very large cluster of ice and would beginto evaporate. This would yield ice that is verypoor in quality and difficult to remove from theice maker.

The Model 315I(P) will continue to operateuntil ice builds up high enough to contact ther-mostat sensor tube in the ice storage bin; thenit will shut off. Models with a drain pump willoccasionally pump out melt water when the icemaker is off. The pump will only be on for afew seconds.

R U N T I M E

The amount of time the Model 315I(P) will runto replace melted ice is about two hours perday. The amount of time the ice maker will runto replace ice removed is dependent upon howmuch ice is removed, how clean the ice makeris, the surrounding air temperature and thetemperature of the water supplied to the icemaker. An empty ice maker will usually takeabout 24–36 hours to refill.

1) Remove the control box cover.

2) Rotate timer shaft clockwise until the cam isin the harvest position (switch button out).

3) Turn on the water supply.

4) With unit plugged in, rotate the ice makercontrol knob to the ON position.

5) Allow the ice maker to operate for one hour, and check the size of the cubes; if they arenot correct, adjust as recommended onpage 18.

6) After the cubes are confirmed to be thecorrect size, replace all panels.

U S I N G YO U R I C E M A K E R

The ice maker is extremely simple to use; byturning the ice maker control knob to the ONposition. The Model 315I(P) will automaticallybegin to produce ice and will continue to do sountil the ice storage bin is full.

Use the scoop to remove ice and place the icescoop in the holder provided (do not leave thescoop on the ice, as it will gradually disappearinto the ice).

The Model 315I(P) will release a batch of eightice cubes about every 30 minutes. At the sametime the cubes fall into the ice storage bin, water will be entering the ice maker anddraining out.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not store anything inthe ice storage bin other than ice; items likewine or beer bottles are not only unsanitary, but labels may also slip off and plug the drain.

The ice maker begins with a fixed charge ofwater that is contained in the reservoir. As thewater is sprayed against the freezing surface, the part of water that does not contain mineralimpurities will freeze and stick to the ice cupmolds. The water containing impurities fallsback into the reservoir. Gradually, during thefreezing portion of the ice making cycle, thewater in the reservoir will become highlyconcentrated with mineral impurities.

During the harvest cycle fresh water flows intothe ice maker to dilute the reservoir water andto rinse the concentrated minerals down thedrain.

ICE P R O D U C T I O N

Ice production has two distinct cycles: freezeand harvest. One freeze cycle and one harvestcycle will yield a batch of eight ice cubes.

The freeze cycle occurs when water is sprayedagainst the freezing surface. The harvest cycleoccurs when the ice is released and waterenters the ice maker. A complete cycle takesabout 30 minutes.

F R E E Z E C Y C L E

During the freeze cycle the compressor ispumping refrigerant, the fan motor is blowingair, and the water pump is circulating water. Asthe refrigerated surface absorbs heat from thewater sprayed against it, that heat is moved tothe area where the fan is blowing air. The heatis transferred to the air, and the warmed up airis discharged from the ice maker. At the sametime, ice is forming on the refrigerated surface(located at the upper back of the ice maker). When the refrigerated surface gets coldenough, the ice maker’s timer will begin toturn. When it turns far enough, it will stop thefreeze cycle and begin the harvest.

H A RV E S T C Y C L E

During the harvest cycle the compressor is stilloperating, but the spray pump and fan motorhave stopped. Two other components havebeen energized: the hot gas valve and the inletwater valve. These two valves open and warmup the freezing surface, allowing the cubes tofall into the ice storage bin. The timer is stillturning, and when it gets to the end of theharvest cycle, the freeze cycle will restart.

The ice storage bin should be sanitized occa-sionally. It is usually convenient to sanitize thebin after the ice making system has beencleaned, and the ice storage bin is empty.

A sanitizing solution can be made of one ounceof household bleach and two gallons of hot95˚F–115˚F (35˚C–45˚C) water. Use a clean clothand wipe the interior of the ice storage binwith the sanitizing solution; pour some of thesolution down the drain and allow it to air dry.

The condenser should be vacuumed two tothree times per year to remove any lint thatmay have been drawn into the condenser. To access the condenser, use a phillips headscrew driver to remove the kickplate/grille.Then, using a soft bristle brush, vacuum toremove dust and lint from the condenser. Referto the illustration below for location of thecondenser.

IMPORTANT NOTE: To avoid bending thecondenser fins, be sure to vacuum in thedirection of the fins (up and down).

CLEANING

Make sure that the outside of the unit anddoor, ice storage bin, condenser, ice makingsystem and ice scoop are kept clean.

Never allow the ice maker to operate withoutregular cleaning. The ice maker will last longerif it is kept clean. Regular cleaning should bedone at least once per year, and preferablytwice. Some water conditions will dictate morefrequent cleaning of the ice making systemand some carpets or pets will dictate morefrequent cleaning of the condenser.

E X T E R I O R C L E A N I N G

Wipe off any spills on the surface of the doorand handle as they occur. If anything spilled onthe door or gasket dries onto the surface, washwith soap and warm water to remove. Alwaysuse a nonabrasive cloth or pad.

To clean the exterior of a stainless steel model, use a soft, nonabrasive stainless steel cleanerlike Signature Polish (see side note) and applywith a soft 100% lint-free cloth.
