As 2016 gets underway, we are delighted to be able to report that ORC activity in our community continues to go from strength to strength.

We have seen an incredible increase in the number of individual enrolments and are striving to see that reflected in our ensembles and outreach programs also.

The growth in individual tuition has increased to the point where we are finding ourselves out-growing the current building!

This success has all to do with the depth of passion and professionalism that our highly experienced and professional teaching staff offers and all to do with the commitment shown by our members, volunteers and friends, along with the day to day attention provided by our behind–the-scenes, hard-working administrative staff. Thank you all.

Our Visiting Artists program will delight the senses of young and old throughout the year and provide outstanding opportunities for our students in masterclasses and workshops unmatched over the Great Divide.

We are also thrilled to once more stage our own Chamber Music series in the Spring, presented by our outstanding ORC professional players. This is one of the highlights on our calendar and not to be missed.

Student and ensemble performances will abound.

Music making at the ORC is for everyone- help us spread the good news!

Donna Riles BMus EdMusic Director

Supporters, Parents and Students of the Orange Regional Conservatorium,

Welcome to our 2016 Program.

The Board of the ORC have had a reasonably easy task in the past 12 months. A year of not needing to concentrate on the day-to-day running of our wonderful organisation.

Donna Riles and Kelly Dent along with their dedicated team members are great examples of how an organisation can be run,

looking at the task ahead, working together to solve challenges and moving forward in a positive direction and all on a limited budget.

I had the pleasure of attending the Staff Training Day on the 29th January and it was great to feel the enthusiasm among the 22 staff members present.

The Board whilst continuing to ensure the future of the ORC, in the coming twelve months will also be working towards the development of plans to construct a new conservatorium.

I would once again like to thank Orange City Council for their ongoing support of our organisation.

Let’s celebrate 2016 in MUSIC.

Sincerely,

Russell TurnerChairman

Melissa Doecke and Mark Isaacs – The Enchanted Flute 1 MarchFlautist Melissa Doecke and pianist-composer Mark Isaacs have hatched their collaboration overseven years, coming together initially around original compositions of Mark’s which Melissa commissioned. They have branched out into exploring French and other Australian repertoire, as well as their own improvisations and arrangements of popular songs.Their first performance was at the 2009 Australian Flute Festival and since then they have recorded a recital for ABC Classic FM and made their debut CD Ulpirra Sonatines, as well as giving concerts atElder Hall, Adelaide and Melbourne Recital Centre.

The String Contingent 3 March

Virtuosic instrumental trio The String Contingent compose and perform music of sparkling beauty and originality that explores the full spectrum of musical expression. Australians Chris Stone (violin) and Holly Downes (double bass) with Scotsman Graham McLeod (guitar) integrate disparate musical styles through their own refined acoustic sensibilities. Combined they have a diverse musical background in Celtic folk, classical, jazz and contemporary. Their concerts are a joyful combination of precision, refinement and beauty, balanced with a visceral energy and drive.

The String Contingent is presented in association with Musica Viva Australia and will be offering a workshop and concert at the ORC.

The Enchanted Flute

French and Australian music for flute and piano from their debut album Ulpirra Sonatines

“Melissa Doecke was fully in touch with French sensibility - l’esprit gaulois - shaping her line with elegance and restrained emotion . . Mark Isaacs’ alter ego as a jazz pianist led him to an interesting

approach with some spiky accents and a strong rhythmic underpinning . . a fresh, engaging performance by these two fine musicians” THE ADVERTISER

Flautist Melissa Doecke and pianist-composer Mark Isaacs have hatched their collaboration over seven years, coming together initially around original compositions of Mark’s which Melissa commissioned, and branching out into exploring French and other Australian repertoire, as well as their own improvisations and arrangements of popular songs.

Their first performance was at the 2009 Australian Flute Festival and since then they have recorded a recital for ABC Classic FM and made their debut CD Ulpirra Sonatines as well as giving concerts at Elder Hall, Adelaide and Melbourne Recital Centre.

Their focus is firmly on music which is both touchingly lyrical as well as being engaging and exciting. Both are performers who love audiences and the joy of pure musical engagement. Performances last one hour and are suited to any space with a performance-standard piano.

Visiting Artists

The Grand Western Tour 4 May

Sydney Conservatorium students tour western NSW annually with David Miller AM. Each year David brings an ensemble of emerging young artists on tour to perform in regional and remote areas of the state. David, as mentor, is Senior Lecturer and Chair of Piano Accompaniment Unit at Sydney University and is widely recognized as one of Australia’s leading pianists, chamber musicians and vocal accompanists. He is also highly regarded as a mentor for young ensemble pianists and repetiteurs.

Simon Tedeschi 6 – 7 May

“Tedeschi is eminently suited to mine the rich variety that is the Gershwin heritage... Tedeschi can dive and dive deeply he does ... with a pulsating delivery ... the abundance of his musicality serves these treasures well”

~ The New York City Jazz Record, 2014 (Gershwin: Take Two)

Simon Tedeschi is one of Australia’s most renowned and sought-after pianists, awarded several prestigious prizes including first prize in the Keyboard division of the Royal Overseas League Competition (UK), Symphony Australia’s Young Performer of the Year Award, and the Legacy Award from the Creativity Foundation (USA).

Tedeschi will be presenting a program of Gershwin favourites. This concert is definitely one not to be missed! It is a fabulous opportunity for ORC supporters and students to enjoy. This event is presented in association with Musica Viva Australia and Simon will also be offering a Music Mayhem concert for young budding pianists to be involved in.

Alan Sisley Oration – An Evening with Jane Rutter 20 May

The ORC are proudly supporting this event with the Friends of the Gallery in presenting An Evening with Jane Rutter. This event will consist of a talk prepared and delivered by Jane Rutter and followed by a performance.

Jane will also be offering a masterclass at the ORC.

Nick Parnell (26 May

As one of the first musicians to bring the vibraphone to the attention of the classical world, Parnell’s ongoing ambition is to break down the elitism of classical music and make it available for everyone to enjoy – something he achieves with enviable mastery through his new CD and tour, Vibes Virtuoso.

Winner of the International Melbourne Percussion Competition (2001), Parnell is releasing his third album (previous 2 albums released in Europe in 2012) and is embarking on his seventh year of national touring following collaborations with pianist Simon Tedeschi and performances at the Australian High Commission in London.

“Nick Parnell is a complete and utter star. A brilliant and beautiful performer”.

Arcadia Quintet 5-6 August

The Arcadia Quintet was formed in 2013 by five like-minded young musicians from around the country, who share a love of playing together and a passion for wind chamber music. The musicians are all current or former students of the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), and have played together in various combinations for a number of years as members of the Australian Youth Orchestra and the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. During that time they developed a belief that, as wind musicians instinctively breathe together and are capable of creating an enormous variety of sound worlds, the wind quintet is an outstanding chamber medium that can rival the very best string quartets. They are excited about sharing this with their audiences. The Arcadia Quintet are presented in association with Musica Viva Australia.

Sydney Philharmonia Choirs 10 September

The ORC are excitedly anticipating the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs visit during September. Sydney Philharmonia exists to celebrate and share the joy of communal singing. They do this by presenting the 500-year-old art form of choral music for audiences at the highest standards of artistic excellence, both with key artistic partners and through their own programs.

They will be delivering a special workshop to feature new Australian music by composer Dan Walker, followed by a delightful concert early evening.

The ORC stands out as an educational institution where students are encouraged to master performance skills.

This year’s program of events will serve to enhance and expose students to a wide variety of performance opportunities.

Performance skills are integrated into lessons, concert performances, and honed at the ORC’s weekly performance class.

Individual and Ensemble performances will occur in 2016 through the annual Proms Concert, The Jazz Cabaret evening, ORC School Spec, OYO Concerto Competition, the Choral Gala, Semester Studio Concerts and Faculty Concerts.

In addition to this, ORC students have the opportunity to engage with students around the state through the Regional Conservatoriums network in workshops/performances with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and visiting world orchestras.
