I remember proclaiming to the neighbors that my doing the dishes was very similar to St. Patrick being an Irish slave, and of course, when I would go over there for dinner Mr. O’Malley would say “Oh no, here comes the saint, back again for dinner!” St. Patrick is also credited with ridding Ireland of all their snakes; maybe he visited Hawaii too since we have no snakes here! March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day. I have a lot in common with St. Patrick. Did you

know that St. Patrick wasn’t even Irish? St. Patrick was an Irish slave for 6 years then escaped and later returned to

convert the Irish to Christianity. When I was a young lad I liked to spend

all my free time at my neighbor’s house. Here in Hawaii they were what we would call my “Hanai Family”. The

O’Malley’s were Irish Catholics and had kids my age. They lived a life far more exciting and loud than our quiet Norwegian Lutheran home. I was over there almost

every night for dinner. . . However, I adored Mrs. O’Malley and would usually do anything she asked. I

would even willingly wash dishes at their house, something I’m sure I wouldn’t do at home without a lot of fuss. I remember proclaiming to the neighbors that

my doing the dishes was very similar to St. Patrick being an Irish slave, and of course, when I would go over there for dinner Mr. O’Malley would say “Oh no, here comes

the saint, back again for dinner!”

St. Patrick is also credited with ridding Ireland of all their snakes; maybe he visited Hawaii too since we have no snakes here!

So this March do something saintly, like washing the dishes, to celebrate.

Japanese Doll Festival, known as Girl’s Day is celebrated on March 3rd. This is a day to

wish all the girls in the household a healthy and happy life. People display a doll called

hina ningyo along with other props to celebrate this day. The hina dolls are dressed in

traditional Japanese costumes and are displayed in the home. Also associated with Girl’s

Day is Hina-matsuri, also called momo-no-sekku, which means a festival of peach

blossoms. The predominant colors used for this festival are pink, to represent the peach

blossoms; white, which represents snow; and green to symbolize new growth.

Happy Girl’s Day

March 2018 Important Dates

Roselani Place and Ola Na Mele Productions invite you to join our residents

to a Picnic for Poki at 11:00 AM at the Historic Kaahumanu Church in

Wailuku Town, 103 South High Street on Thursday, March 15, 2018. Our

featured guest with live Hawaiian entertainment will be Cane Fire.

Hitting the Maui music scene in 2009, CANE FIRE quickly impressed

audiences with their unique musical style. Kaniela Q, Joe Chee, and Kahala

Greig formed Cane Fire in Kaniela’s Wailuku backyard. Each of the Cane

Fire members contributed original compositions to their CD “Coming

Home”, resulting in a diverse yet harmonious mix of styles and voices.

Since the 2016 release of their new CD “Coming Home”, Kaniela has

moved away from Hawaii. James Presbitero will be joining Joe and Kahala at Pincic for Poki concert.

Bring your lunch with you and enjoy coffee and fresh baked cookies from Roselani Place. Relax under

the monkey pod tree for an hour or so at this free event, which is open to the public.

Picnic for Poki is held every third Thursday on the month to continue bringing the spirit of aloha and

Hawaiian music to the Maui community in honor of the late Allen "Braddah Poki" Pokipala. Braddah

Poki was dedicated to sharing Hawaiian music throughout various venues in Hawaii.

Prince Kuhio Day

March 26, is called Kuhio Day in Hawaii. It is a state holiday that marks the birth of

Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole. The territorial legislature of Hawaii passed this

resolution in 1949 establishing March 26, as a holiday honoring Prince Kuhio. He

was born on the island of Kauai and was educated at Royal and Punahou Schools,

where he excelled at football and track.

From 1902 to until Jan. 7, 1922 he served as a delegate from Hawaii to Congress.

In 1919, he introduced a bill requesting that Hawaii be admitted into America as a full fledged state.

Hawaii became the 50th state in 1959. His greatest contribution to the Hawaiian people was the

establishment of the Hawaiian Homes Commission.

Here’s how to play…

The objective of the game is to fill all the blank

squares in a game with the correct numbers.

There are three very simple constraints to

follow. In a 9 by 9 square Sudoku game:

Every row of 9 numbers must include all digits 1 through 9 in any order

Every column of 9 numbers must include all digits 1 through 9 in any order

Every 3 by 3 subsection of the 9 by 9 square must include all digits 1 through 9

See the front desk for the solution.

Staying healthy over 50: Tips for eating well as you age

As you age, your relationship to food may change along with your body.

A decreased metabolism, changes in taste and smell, and slower

digestion may affect your appetite, the foods you can eat, and how your

body processes food. The key is to figure out how to adapt to your

changing needs. Now, more than ever, healthy eating is important to

maintain your energy and health.

Load up on high-fiber fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Your

whole digestive system does slow as you age, so fiber is very

important. Consume fiber-rich foods such as whole grains, fruit, and vegetables. They will help you feel

more energetic and give you fuel to keep going.

Put effort into making your food look and taste good. Your taste buds may not be as strong and your

appetite may not be the same, but your nutritional needs are just as important as ever. If you don’t enjoy

eating like you used to, put a little more effort into your meals, including the way you flavor, prepare,

and present your food.

Watch out for dehydration. Because of physical changes, older adults are more prone to dehydration.

So make sure you are drinking plenty of fluid, even if you don’t feel thirsty. If you’re not getting

enough water, you’re not going to be as sharp and your energy will suffer.

Make meals a social event. It’s more enjoyable to eat with others than alone. If you live alone, invite other

people over. It’s a great way to stay in touch with friends and you can share cooking and cleanup duties.
