***Sunday Nights - a great night
to check for Head Lice. ***
***Have you heard your child read today? We encourage all
students to practise their reading at home about 5 nights per week.
Therefore, by now, most students should have read at least between
65-70 nights. Well done if you have kept up!
Hume Wins Cross Country!! On Friday, we had our
School House Cross Country. Students from Years Foundation-6
competed in their respective age groups and grade levels collecting points
for their Houses. Hume House won the House Cross Country Carnival.
Congratulations to Hume House!
We also congratulate all of the students who gave their best.
‘Striving for Excellence’ is our school motto, which means we aim to give our
very best. Our students were doing exactly that!
As you can see by the scores below, it was very close. For the Years 3-6,
64 students have been selected to represent our school at the District Cross
Country on Friday 30th May, 2014. The event will be held at Lighthorse Park in
Seymour. We will report how they
go in the newsletter soon. Go Pucka!
Place getters are reported on pages 6 & 7.

Healthy Tip – To encourage happy, healthy family
meals:
-Enjoy and eat a variety of foods yourself
-Make water the main family drink
-Make a food shopping list and stay within your budget
-Plan the list to include a variety of fresh, seasonal,
healthy family foods
-Involve your children in selecting foods to buy and in
meal preparation
-Keep preparing a variety of foods each day for meals
and snacks
Try planting a family garden as a rewarding way to
experience new tastes
(www.goforyourlife.vic.gov.au/kids)
Creative Play – Last year we collected lots of different
toys for students to play with at lunchtime, and it would
be great to continue that. If anyone has toys their
children no longer use, especially dolls and dolls
clothes, Lego and other blocks, cooking utensils, ‘dress
ups’, ‘Matchbox’ cars, trains and tracks, puppets,
marbles etc….we can use them. Thankyou!!!
Mobile ‘phone recycling – We receive money for
‘phones that you no longer use, so please keep bringing
them in. Thanks!
Enjoy your week!
Sue Ranger, Defence School Transition Aide.

On behalf of the Puckapunyal
Primary School Community, we
wish them both a very Happy
Birthday!
The School Canteen is open for Lunch Orders again
this Friday. Each and every Friday students can order
lunches from the school canteen. The menu will be
different each week. Please ensure that a paper bag comes
with the order (no sticky tape or staples please). Please
indicate on the lunch bag if the money is in another
sibling’s bag.
This week the menu is - Steamed Dim Sims 50c each
Chocolate/Strawberry Milk $2.00 each
Apple/Orange Juice Popper $1.50 each
No charge for soy sauce
Walk safely to school day: On
Friday 23rd
May (this week)we are
celebrating walking to school. This
encourages parents, carers and their children to build
regular walking to and from school into their daily
routine, as children need a minimum of 60
minutes physical activity per day.
Less driving and more walking is
great for the environment too. Give it a try!!
On Thursday 29th May the whole school will be
attending a Visiting Artist session called, ‘To
Federation and Beyond’ at the PC Centre.
The Show, ‘To Federation and Beyond’ deals with the
Political structures that have been in place in the past
and present.
Parents are welcome to attend the session at the PC
Centre
The School Photos will take place on Tuesday
27th May (next week). We encourage students to bring
their best uniforms and their best smiles that day.
SMILE!!

Defence School Transition Aide Message Back at school: I trust that everyone has had a smooth
and satisfactory beginning to the school year. Changing
schools, beginning school for the first time and even
returning for another school year can be daunting for
students and parents. It is great to see parents eager to
support their children at this time and be an integral part
of their education. If you have any concerns, or just feel
like a chat about school and your child, please find me!
SWAPP Select Program
I have information about the ADF partners career
assistance program if anyone is interested.
NEW UNIFORM
We have recently had a new shipment of uniform arrive
that includes shorts, tops, tracksuit pants and hats. Some
parents have been waiting on this to arrive.
Best wishes for the week.

‘Striving for Excellence’
Open since 1887
Each week in the newsletter, we will give families a summary of the Teaching/Learning Focus for the week.
That can help families by: being aware of what classrooms are covering; with discussion topics at the dinner table when
discussing school (eg. ‘How are you going with addition in Numeracy this week?’); helping their children study at home,
etc. Parents have indicated that this information would be very useful. We also ask families to be aware that schools are
very busy places and events can be unpredictable at times. We therefore must remain flexible. That means, we can plan to
cover certain topics at particular times and have to change them according to arising needs.
Junior School – Preps/Foundation Rooms 3 & 6 Literacy: We will continue to develop early writing skills with a focus on pencil grip, capital letters and full stops. We
will be focusing on the letter ‘Ww’ and the sound it makes. We are also encouraging students to use finger spaces in their
writing. We are encouraging the use of Golden words within our writing.
Numeracy: We will practise counting to 20 by 1s. We are learning about the number 11. We are also looking at ‘light’ and
‘heavy’ things.
Junior School – Year 1s Rooms 3, 8 & 9 Literacy: We will continue to revise our writing skills, correct letter formation, use of dotted thirds and the construction of
sentences. We have been continuing to focus on questions, commas, nouns and exclamation marks within our writing.
When writing we are looking and thinking about the sounds within our words. We are also trying to use resources such as
dictionaries/devices to assist us with our spelling.
Numeracy: We will continue to reinforce place value concepts including confidently and fluently saying numbers. We
are also looking at Mass, comparing the mass of different objects.
Junior School – Year 2s Rooms 8, 9 & 10 Literacy: We will continue to revise our writing skills, correct letter formation, use of dotted thirds and the construction of
sentences. We have been continuing to focus on questions, commas, nouns and exclamation marks within our writing.
When writing we are looking and thinking about the sounds within our words. We are also trying to use resources such as

Numeracy: We will continue to reinforce place value concepts including confidently and fluently saying numbers. We
are also looking at Mass, comparing the mass of different objects.
Middle School - Years 3/4 Rooms 10, 11 & 13 Literacy: During writing sessions over the next few weeks, we will work on persuasive texts and narratives. We will also
be focusing on adverbs.
Numeracy: We will continue to learn about fractions and 3D objects. Tables facts will be practised throughout the week.
Senior School - Years 5/6 Rooms 1A&1B Literacy: During writing sessions over the next few weeks, we will continue to work on narratives. We will also focus on
prefixes.
In reading we will be focusing on fluency and expression while also identifying key words and phrases during note
taking.
Numeracy: We will continue work on place value (including decimals), processes, fractions and decimals. Another
focus will be work relating to prime numbers, composite numbers, factors and index numbers. Tables facts will be
practised throughout the week.

Keep practising to write! Enjoy your children!
Praise all attempts at writing and spelling. Talk about what your child has
written, have your child point to the writing and talk about the message it
carries.
Demonstrate how you write by recording the message too.
Let your child observe what you do when you try to spell unknown words;
eg say it, write it down, try again, check it with a friend or in a dictionary.
Ask your child to read their work to other people, such as a friend or family
member.
Look for your child’s work in class books that are brought home to share.
Identify letters and words around you. Play with letters of the alphabet and
find letters and words in magazines that are of significance; eg. “That letter is
in your name. That’s the way you spell my name.”
Have fun writing with your child!
Seymour Little Athletics Centre is again running their cross country season. It will be held on

This week is Education Week. What have we been up to??
On Monday, families were invited for school tours. Students took
their families around the school showing them their classrooms, school work and other resources of the school.
Many families just joined in the classroom activities. The students loved the responsibility and enjoyed their
families visiting as well.
Don’t forget that on Friday, all classes will be participating in a Multi-aged activity about
Mathematics. We will also open the classrooms to our families. The activities begin at 2:30 p.m. The
students love to mix with other students from different classrooms every now and then. Please come along and

EATING AND INSPIRED BY A HUGE HOME GROWN PUMPKIN
PUMPKIN SCONES…..Mmmmmm…yummy! Just
what did 3/4 Brincat students think?
Pouring the flour was fun and it was the best when
Miss Atkinson got flour all over her and pumpkin on
her nose. I thought they would taste like pumpkin,
but they didn’t, they were yum! Emily Cox
It looked great when all the ingredients were piled
high as it changed when they were mixed together,
like a magic trick.
The mix looked good. Ethan Calle
My favorite bit was when Miss Atkinson was mixing
it and then it turned yellow and it was soooo yummy.
