What Can Gavin Do for You?
A New Beginning
Greetings Louisiana-Mississippi-West Tennessee!
Hopefully everyone has had a great semester so far! From what has been reported, many of you guys and Girls :) are doing great with recruiting this year. So, cheers to every club!
To let everyone know, this year we are supporting and participating in several service initiatives. Project P.L.A.Y., The Six Cents Initiative, Focusing on the Future: Children, and our newest initiative, the Kiwanis Major Emphasis Project, Placing AEDs in Schools. We have partnered with our La-Miss-Tenn Kiwanis and Key Club family to support this great program. The focus is to raise funds to purchase AEDs, Automated External Defibrilla-tors, to place in schools across the District.
“An AED is a small, portable, comput-erized device that talk users through lifesaving steps to zap a dying heart back to a normal beat during a cardiac arrest. Schools are a logical place to put defibrillators, doctors say, because on any given day as much as 20% of a community’s population passes through its schools, including teachers, custodians, parents, and volunteers.”
More information on this project will
be given out during the weekend, here at T.I.O.G.A. and we will also have a live demonstration.
Many of you are probably wondering about Project P.L.A.Y. Well, it hasn’t gone anywhere! During the summer we had a large scale project planned, however, it was cancelled. So, your District Board is looking into another site and project date. At our last meet-ing, we discussed having a large scale project in Memphis and other locations throughout the District. Several ideas were suggested, and we will be looking into it further during our T.I.O.G.A. Board Meeting this weekend.
Reading over a few of the club re-ports, I’ve noticed that several clubs have had projects focused on the International Initiative Focusing on the Future: Children. This is great, keep up the great work! So far, the District has approximately 1,504.3 service hours which is 3,295.7 hours away from the District’s goal of 4800 service hours. I know that you all have it in you to get those hours racked up! We are 31.3% into our goal with 6 months left. IT CAN BE DONE! Well, I think you are tired of me now, so will give you guys more info when I see you!
Have fun at T.I.O.G.A. :)
SERVICE Our wish for each of you is to really enjoy your college ex-perience and take many great
Circle K memories with you.
Most importantly, when you leave school, find a local Ki-wanis Club to continue serving those less fortunate.

District Administrators
HELLO CIRCLE K FRIENDS!!! We are Ame and Dennis Oliver. With the resignation of Mark Simmons, we have been asked to serve as Circle K Administrators for the remain-der of 2008-09. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to con-tinue our association with Cir-cle K which began several years ago. We have followed with great interest the great job your
Leadership Team is doing this year. We have assured him we are ready to "dive in" and do our part to make this the best year yet for the LA-MISS-TENN Circle K. As with Kiwanis, new mem-bers and new clubs remain our NUMBER ONE challenge. We would ask you all to vigorously pursue growing your clubs. Thank you. MORE MEMBERS-----MORE

Hello CKI members,
It's that time of year again!!! That's right Key to College
month starts October 1st!
Key to College is a CKI pro-gram developed especially for high school students who are interested in gaining insight about college and university
life, service, and leadership.
Sponsoring a Key to College Program benefits both the high school audience and the CKI
club in several ways:
1. High school students have
the opportunity to learn about college life first-hand from col-
lege students.
2. The program gives mem-bers of CKI the opportunity to interact with high school stu-dents, often members of Key
Club International.
3. CKI members may further develop their leadership and presentation skills by providing
this needed community service.
I am strongly encouraging each CKI club to consider
TIOGA’s Thanks
sure our CKI friendships aren't just at CKI events. It all starts here at TIOGA, but let's take it home with us so that the next time we see each other isn't at Y'ALL or DCON even. In the meantime ENJOY TIOGA!!!!

I want to take this time to say thank you to EVERYONE who helped to make TIOGA a suc-cess. I enjoyed planning this event, and I hope all the atten-dees and volunteers have the best weekend ever. It's exciting to see how all the planning has turned out. As we all know, TIOGA is probably the best place to get to learn more
about CKI and get to know our district. I hope on Sunday eve-ryone leaves here knowing more Facebook pages, email addresses, and phone num-bers than you did when you got here. This past DCON most of our district board ran for office on the platform of member growth and retention. Well, the best way to do that is to make

seasonal parties to celebrate
your club’s success. Such bene-
fits will reinforce members’ en-
couragement to continue per-
forming community service. The
awards will create a competitive
atmosphere to increase member
involvement as well as provide
an incentive for devoting time
and energy into projects for
which members may, at times,

As a result of my
Circle K travel this year, I have
to come to strongly believe that
the best way to build new clubs
is to meet with the potential
Circle K’ers one-on-one and
truly show them what Circle K is
about, what it means to you, and
what you mean to it. Simple
phone conversations will simply
not cut it; however, when you
cannot organize a meeting time
to see them personally, you
cannot share your experiences
with them. Thus, I have come to
realize that if you want to build
clubs, you have to find the peo-
ple yourself by literally pursuing
them—not in the creepy, stalker
way, but in the sincere, enthusi-
astic way that gets people inter-
ested in involvement in commu-
nity service.
As for membership
retention, that is a whole differ-
ent ball game. My fellow club
members and I do well to recruit
new members, but we have a
problem with members losing
interest and not showing up for
meetings and service projects. I
have concluded in my two years
as lieutenant governor that the
best way to combat membership
loss is to provide benefits.
These may include snacks or
meals at meetings, fun icebreak-
ers, intriguing games, or even
sponsoring Kiwanis organization
and they want our help as they
begin building a local playground
for disabled children: Parc Inde-
pendence. We are excited and
can't wait! One of our biggest
projects this semester is still in the
planning stages. We hope to clean
up a local playground for children,
landscaping and possibly painting
worn down playground equipment.
As you can see, we have much
in the way of projects this semes-
ter! UL CKI is eager as we begin
work! We welcome you all to join
us in our project adventures!
Wishing everyone a fun, safe, and
successful semester!

Circle K
UL Circle K continues to be
excited about the semester! We
have many projects going on this
month including participating in
T.I.O.G.A., publishing our second
newsletter of the fall semester,
participating in a "Cajuns Can
Care" food drive for UL's Home-
coming, and continuing our recruit-
ment plans for new members! We
are also making Halloween goody
bags to donate to our local Fami-
lies Helping Families for their an-
nual "Treats of the Village" event
hosted at Halloween each year.
We plan to "Trick or Treat" for
Unicef this Halloween in order to
contribute to our Six Cents Initia-
tive and we are volunteering ser-
vice hours to a fellow organization
on campus. They need volunteers
for their Grad Expo, an event put
on for graduating seniors.
As the semester progresses we
hope to clean up what is known as
the "Circle K tree" on campus. The
historic oak tree is home to a very
important CKI Veteran's memorial.
The area around the tree is over-
grown and run down. Members of
CKI are working with the Univer-
sity's physical plant to plan and
organize clean up and landscaping
activities. Also in store for our club
this semester are activities like
making holiday cards for the sol-
diers overseas, a "Kisses for Kids"
project to honor March of Dimes,
and sorting canned goods at Food
Net, our local food bank.
We have been in touch with our

Hey Guys!!!
This year the presidents of La-Miss-Tenn have been keeping in touch better than ever be-fore. We now have a presi-dent’s report, like the monthly club reports, that must be turned in every month with information about each club’s activities and the progress of the president and club. The Presidents’ Council serves as a way to exchange ideas about fundraising, service projects,
and other club activities and projects, and I expect to con-tinue the exchange of ideas with the help of the monthly president reports. With Gavin, I have been able to send out emails keeping up with other clubs in the district. It is impor-tant for our presidents to under-stand that these reports are here to assist them with good ideas and serve as a network among all the presidents of La-Miss-Tenn. There will be a

with live bands and food. The
proceeds of this event go to St.
Jude’s Research Hospital to save
the lives of children stricken with
catastrophic diseases. We are
excited to get this event up and
going within the next few weeks.

The Circle K at Millsaps Col-
lege has tried very hard to get
involved in as many services
around campus this year. The
club plans weekly services to go
to places such as the Stewpot to
serve food during lunch, the
Mustard Seed, the Bethlehem
Center, and others. The biggest
service project the club has put
on so far this year has been
Shack-A-Thon. The purpose of
this event was to promote
homelessness awareness. We
had great people show up to
help out at this event. These
volunteers set up shelters out-
side on campus and stayed in
them for 24 hours. In all, the
club was able to raise about
$370, and all of these proceeds
went to Stewpot. The next big
event that our Circle K is about
to put on is Up Til Dawn, which
will be held October 22nd. We
are expecting a great turn out

Hey Everyone!
I am so excited to be seeing all
of you again at TIOGA!!! I love
this conference because we are
out in the fall weather, and get-
ting to meet the members who
just joined our amazing organiza-
tion! This is such an exciting
time for our district, and I am so
pumped to be able to share with
you everything that we are do-
ing. As we bust it out and rock
Louisiana, Mississippi, and West
Tennessee I encourage you to
get to know your fellow Circle K
members. I am sure by the end
of the weekend, you will here
people say that some of their
best friends are not even from
their home clubs!!! I can honestly
say I feel the same way. Keeping
in contact with people through-
out the district and internation-
ally has brought me some amaz-
ing friends and soul mates in
service.
I just want to let all of you
know that the district board is
not only here to help you with
service ideas, but to help you
find ways to communicate that
will build lasting partnerships in
service to ultimately better our
world!
The next bulletin will be pub-
lished right before Y’ALL Con-
ference in January, so please be
on the lookout for article re-
quests! As always, if you need
me, please feel free to let me
know!
