JULY 2014 EDITION: 3 WWW.PSI.ORG Movercado Safari What’s your story? If you'd like to submit a story or join the team, please email us at [email protected]. We'd love to hear from you! WELCOME TO THE THIRD EDITION OF INSIDE PSI! Movercado. Everyone at PSI has been talking about this exciting initiative. Judi Heichelheim [SOCIALCAST ] breaks it down for us: During the last week of May, 44 participants from 16 PSI countries and all regions came together on a learning safari for Movercado. While the Movercado Safari sounded exotic and playful, in reality, it was a lot of work. If you have not yet heard of Movercado, it is the brainchild of Iulian Circo, CR for Mozambique, who describes it as a business ecosystem. Iulian [SOCIALCAST ] and his team had the participants working hard, learning how Movercado could revolutionize the way PSI does business. The first two days were largely a learning tour, with participants going out into the market, testing out how to use their virtual currency (the Tiko), and witnessing how the micro-entrepreneurs operate. By day three, participants were asked to pitch their ideas about how to apply Movercado within their own countries. In Mozambique, the Movercado ecosystem is applied to a range of programmatic flows, including supply chain, payments, IPC, and vouchers and referrals, and has fundamentally changed the way PSI/ Mozambique operates. Validation of codes through SMS is key to the ecosystem, and allows Mozambique to have real time data for decision-making. It has helped them to innovate in the structure of operations, moving away from directly employed sales agents, to micro-entrepreneurs who plug in through Movercado. Through Movercado, there is potential for development assistance to reach the bottom of the pyramid in a fundamentally different way. For example, UNFPA and others are actively looking for ways to plug their products into Movercado, and those involved in conditional cash transfer programs see its potential application for them as well. Movercado has the potential to go way beyond PSI and our products and services, but it is still unclear how exactly it will roll out. Onward! Questions? Contact Iulian Circo: [email protected]

WELCOME TO THE THIRD EDITION

OF INSIDE PSI!

Movercado. Everyone at PSI has been talking about this exciting initiative. Judi Heichelheim [SOCIALCAST] breaks it down for us:

During the last week of May, 44 participants from 16 PSI countries and all regions came together on a learning safari for Movercado. While the Movercado Safari sounded exotic and playful, in reality, it was a lot of work. If you have not yet heard of Movercado, it is the brainchild of Iulian Circo, CR for Mozambique, who describes it as a business ecosystem. Iulian [SOCIALCAST] and his team had the participants working hard, learning how Movercado could revolutionize the way PSI does business.

The first two days were largely a learning tour, with participants going out into the market, testing out how to use their virtual currency (the Tiko), and witnessing how the micro-entrepreneurs operate. By day three,

participants were asked to pitch their ideas about how to apply Movercado within their own countries.

In Mozambique, the Movercado ecosystem is applied to a range of programmatic flows, including supply chain, payments, IPC, and vouchers and referrals, and has fundamentally changed the way PSI/Mozambique operates.

Onward!

GET THEM INTRIGUED. GET THEM EXCITED. GET THEM TALKING. PSI TANZANIA’S CAMPAIGN TO ADDRESS MULTIPLE, CONCURRENT PARTNERSHIPS.

The campaign slogan“Baki Njia Kuu; Michepuko Sio Dili” in English loosely translates as “stay on

the main road, short cuts aren’t the deal”.

Marketing Minute

WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR INITIATIVE TO BE FEATURED IN THE NEXT MARKETING MINUTE?

Write to us at [email protected]!

Has anyone made any real gains in changing the deep-seated African social norm of Multiple Concurrent Partnerships with a communications campaign? At PSI Tanzania, we are throwing our hat into the ring with our “Michepuko” campaign.

To gain our target audience’s attention, our campaign would not only need to be sustained, but also engaging enough to strike up a conversation. We needed it to be real and relatable, and most importantly, have the potential to develop organically. We have realized our phase one objectives, which were to:

Get them intrigued. Get them excited. Get them talking.

We started a conversation using radio and print executions. The radio spots were anchored in recognizable true stories and urban legends. We coined the phrase “Michepuko” (shortcuts) with the aim of adding it to the Tanzanian lexicon. Armed with tales from the collective memory, a distinctive logo and new language around the issue, we believed we had what we needed for the campaign to gain traction… and it did.

The evolution of the campaign will be guided by the audience, and we will graduate the discussion from phase to phase with conversation starters. Watch this space!

15 PSI Botswana Employees Run in the Gaborone Marathon!

On March 30, PSI Botswana employees participated for the second time in the 10K and 4K course of the annual Gaborone Marathon. They competed against over 4,500 runners from 20 different countries.

In 2013, PSI’s Gobe Mosinyi finished the 10K in 43 minutes, just 13 minutes after the winner, and was overheard saying “maybe next year I should train before running”! In preparation for this year’s race, they attended weekly aerobics classes hosted on PSI’s first floor by Ellonah Seleke [SOCIALCAST] . Congratulations, PSI Botswana!

PSI Botswana Marathon Success!

The Inside Scoop: Industry News

What’s the word on the street about recent bids? Who’s winning? Who’s losing? What are some key trends in the world of new funding? In this column, we attempt to fill you in on some of the latest intelligence. This time, we focus on U.S. Government bid intelligence.

In global USAID awards, everyone is awaiting the outcomes of who will hold the next supply chain contract with USAID (replacing DELIVER and SCMS). The two front runners are the incumbent team (JSI & MSH) as well as Chemonics. But as the 6th largest contract the U.S. government will release this year ($9 billion) we don’t expect any word before the fall at the earliest. Official word on the winner of AIDSFREE is outstanding, but rumors are that JSI (the incumbent from AIDSTAR One) is the winner – they were the only team we heard of getting BAFO questions. PSI submitted a strong application, but was ultimately unsuccessful. The companion project to AIDSFREE, which is focused solely on Key Populations, is rumored to have been won by FHI360. Up next in global bids, USAID’s re-bid of their flagship project for the private sector in health (SHOPS) is expected late this year. Abt is the current incumbent, but others will join in the fight here (including Futures and possibly URC) to position themselves as the go-to organization for engaging the private sector. PSI will be participating on a team.

USAID’s re-bid of their flagship project for the private sector in health

(SHOPS) is expected late this year...PSI will be participating on a team.

What are international development orgs in the beltway talking about these days? Top of mind is International Relief and Development (IRD) which was recently written up in the Washington Post in an article that focused on executive salaries, bonuses, connections to USAID and performance. Ex-PSIer Ingrid Fitzgerald (former HR director) is a VP with IRD. IRD was, until recentlythe largest recipient of USAID funding. Check out the article here. And IRD’s response to the article here.

Which big players are making moves in the industry? Dana Hovig, ex-Marie Stopes International (MSI) CEO and ex-PSI VP, is now at the Gates Foundation as Director of Integrated Service Delivery. Shannon England, ex-PSI Director of NBD, just left Management Sciences for Health as Director of Business Development and is a VP at Internews. Chastain Fitzgerald recently stopped by the PSI office to say hello to folks. Chastain was a VP and long standing PSI veteran. She is now the President of Programs at Women Care Global. Michael Chommie, ex-PSI Director of PSI/Europe, is one of her VPs. Will Warshauer, ex-PSI VP, was just appointed the CEO of Technoserve.

Axel, tell us about your jobs at PSI.

I started at PSI as a Procurement Analyst, then APM, and then in the field as a Country Representative. In all these capacities, I had a bit of flexibility in developing tools to improve the management of the work at hand to get the necessary results. I was privileged to have bosses who encouraged innovations and exercised flexibility in the execution of tasks, so long as it led to the same result in a timely fashion.

Would you recommend PSI to a colleague? If so, why?

I continue to recommend PSI to colleagues because I was welcome and became a part of the PSI family. PSI gave me a once in a lifetime opportunity to start a program in my country, with flexibility to start a program that I felt was of the most importance at that time. I believe PSIers are unique, innovative social marketers. The organizational culture is one that is always open to trying new ideas and thus is a breeding ground for groundbreaking innovation.

What is your best memory of PSI?

My best memory was actually going to the field and talking to people who were now using waterguard and what it meant for them. A simple solution to treat water having such a powerful impact on a community.

How did PSI prepare you for your current position?

I had to learn to ‘swim’ fast and not take no for an answer so easily. This toughness of just getting the job done is invaluable.

Axel is currently serving as Liberia’s Minister of Commerce and Industry.

Former PSIers Speak Out

ONCE A PSIER, ALWAYS A PSIER

In this edition, we catch up with Axel Addy, former CR for

The Women’s Investment Network

I’ve heard of “WIN.” But what is it?

WIN is a network of high net-worth individuals who invest in innovative pilot projects that will improve how health products and services are delivered to women and their families. The projects are designed by PSI technical leads, regional directors and country offices. Once proven successful, they will be leveraged to unlock future government, corporate and private funding.

How do I get involved?

• Share your ideas for interventions. Regional Directors will be leading a process with their regions to solicit ideas from country teams and regional support teams

• If your intervention is selected as a WIN intervention, the team will work with you and the appropriate Technical Advisor to develop a 2-page concept note. For details on requirements, please visit the KIX page.

Questions? Contact Su Balasubramanian: [email protected]

Congratulations!

Why is WIN important?

WIN will help more Saras live longer and healthier lives by increasing PSI ‘s relevance, scale and value.

Relevance: Meet health needs of girls and women. Grow PSI’s ability to achieve health impact in new areas.

Value: Diversify funding sources.

Scale: Greater impact across health areas and geography.
