INNOVATIVE PROCESS IMPROVEMENT STRATEGIES4:10 PROBLEM SOLVING SESSION Strategising solutions to key challenges and obstacles In this highly interactive session, delegates will be presented with hypothetical scenarios related to hospital management and efficiency. Delegates will work together, strategising solutions to the problems presented in the following scenarios:

1. Nursing staff have consistently reported that paperwork and administrative tasks are cutting into the time they can spend with patients. On top of this, they say they are regularly dealing with inaccurate patient information and feel patient care is compromised as a result. Devise an approach to address these concerns.

2. Latest budget reports show that spending on staff overtime hours has increased significantly in the last quarter. Come up with a strategy to identify the reasons why and address the issue.

3. Outpatient admissions are becoming a serious concern. Referrals from GPs or specialists are often inaccurate, or provide inadequate information about the urgency and state of patients’ conditions. This is increasing patient wait times and adding extra work for admissions staff. Develop an approach to address this issue.

4. You believe many of your hospital’s beds are occupied by people who do not need to be in hospital, but could have their care needs met elsewhere. Many of these patients feel they will not find adequate care outside the hospital and are anxious about being discharged. Formulate a strategy to meet these challenges. Facilitated by: Bernie Harrison, Director, Improvement Academy, Australian Council on Healthcare Standards
