MASTER PAGET
The inaugural talk of the History Society willbe given by Master Baker on difficultElizabethan marriage problems. One suchproblem involved a man who was divorced forincurable impotence and then had a child by hissecond wife. Did this disprove the divorce, sothat the second marriage was invalid? Or wasthe finding of impotence incontrovertible sothat both marriages were invalid? Or was itlegally possible to be impotent in relation to onewoman but not another? It promises to be amost interesting evening.
The lecture will include a Q&A and will be followed by a reception with food and drink for those who wish to continue theconversation.

ANNUAL REVIEWThe Library’s annual review for 2013 is now on the website.
STRATEGIC REVIEWThe strategic review group’s report on libraryservices, which was adopted by the LibraryCommittee in October, was the subject of an in-depth review at the December 2013 meeting ofthe Executive Committee, when it was decidedthat the Inn should continue to allocate sufficientfunding to the Library to allow the present levelof service to be maintained, and should givepriority to exploring options which might permitmembers outside London and those whosepractice base is not within convenient range ofthe Inns of Court to access electronic servicesremotely. The report of the review group is available on the Library website.

‘You’ve gone a little crazy with pansiesthis year’ was one visitor’s commentin reaction to our spring display.
This year, for the first time, we have used violetsand pansies as an early seasonal under-plantingto our bulbs in the High Border, War of theRose border and pot display. Truth be told, it issimply a bit of fun on my part, having finallyovercome my prejudice against the genus Viola. For most of my horticultural career, I associatedthis small spring bedder with cemeteries, run-down council parks and old-fashioned windowboxes, including my grandmother’s. Despite
their rather delicate and humorous names, like‘Lemon Blueberry Swirl’ or ‘HollywoodHoneys’, they are possessed of a seeminglyrelentless cheerfulness and endurance, eventhroughout the wettest British winter on record, for which I have grown to admire them.
