anthem by Gabriel Jackson, set to the words ofJohn Milton’s But let my due feet never failfrom Il Penseroso, was a particular highlight ofthe service, enabling the Temple Church Choirto be heard at its very best under the directionof James Vivian and to demonstrate GregMorris’ organ playing. An informative andcolourful booklet produced by the Master ofthe Temple, Angelic Symphony, was given toeach of the donors and is now available for amodest fee from the Temple Church shop.

Her Majesty and The Duke of Edinburghwere later introduced to members of the OrganAppeal Committee, chaired from its inceptionby Master May of Inner Temple and MichaelBlair QC, of Middle Temple, and to PennyJonas, whose dedication and powers ofpersuasion have ensured the success of theappeal. The grandson of Lord Glentanar, whohad donated the organ to the church in 1954following a chance meeting with the thenorganist, Dr George Thalben-Ball, was alsopresented to the Queen. The Royal couple thenmet groups of donors, including two greatnieces of the six Dixon brothers who served asTemple Church choristers between 1900 and1919, two of whom were killed in the FirstWorld War.

The Temple Church and its organ lookedand sounded as never before.

THE MARTIN JOHN BURR SILVER CABINETSThose of you who have been in Hall sinceEaster will have seen the magnificent silvercabinets which have been erected at the eastend of Hall. They are truly magnificent but

their delivery has been preceded by an overlong gestation period.

The possibility of putting silver cabinets inthe Hall has been a live issue for many years.Master Deby, who was Master of the Silveruntil last year, told me that he proposed themwhen he first was appointed in the early 1990sbut that the proposal was rejected both on thegrounds of cost and of problems withinsurance.

In 2011, the then Treasurer, Master Hallett, and Master Cryan, who has now taken over asMaster of the Silver, resurrected the projectsince modern glass laminating processes havemade see through but safe glass a reality. Thecost however was such that the ExecutiveCommittee did not feel able to justify theadornment of the Hall in the current economiccircumstances.

Then, in September 2012, the Inn wasinformed that a member of the Inn, MartinJohn Burr, who had died earlier in the year, hadleft one sixteenth of his net estate to the Inn.He was, in fact, called to the Bar by the MiddleTemple but subsequently became a memberboth of this Inn and of Lincoln’s Inn.

After a number of visits to the V&A,Fitzwilliam Museum and Goldsmiths’Company to view a variety of cabinets, Master Cryan then visited the potentialmanufacturer of the cabinets, Reier Showcases,at their UK showroom near Greenford todiscuss quality and price and came away with a more realistic quotation such that theBurr legacy would cover three quarters of thecost. The Executive Committee felt able toprovide the balance. We hope that the cabinets

ANNOUNCEMENTS

TRINITY ELECTIONS 2013Elections for Governing Benchers will be held during the Trinity term. Members who would like tofind out more about this important role should speak to a Governing Bencher or the Sub-Treasurer,in the first instance. The Inn is particularly keen to receive nominations for members on Circuitoutside of London.

Information is available on the Bencher Elections page of the Members’ Area atwww.innertemple.org.uk or by contacting Jennie Collis on 020 7797 8177 [email protected]

are a fitting tribute to Martin Burr for his generosity.

The showcases are of an equivalentspecification to those supplied to theHermitage in St Petersburg as well as theBritish Museum and the V&A. They are fittedwith what is affectionately called “banditproof” glass, are suitably alarmed and theinsurance company is happy. We can thereforehave on permanent display many of the Inn’ssilver treasures, two of which, the Victoriansilver gilt Nefs (ornamental ships), were sodelicate that they were not permitted to bemoved out of the vaults.

Pride of place must go to the Elizabethanmelon cup, perhaps the oldest silver in the Inn,and to the Dutch silver layette basket, datingfrom 1645, which is frequently loaned forexhibitions of distinctive silverware.

If you haven’t seen them, come into Halland have a look, preferablyin the evening when theyare lit up.

GORBODUC28 & 29 APRIL

Royal politics and drama came together in thissplendid collaboration between the education branchof the Globe Theatre, Read Not Dead, and the InnerTemple in a dramatised reading by students, barristersand Benchers and an outstanding Globe professional,Rebecca Todd.

Gorboduc was the first known blank verse drama, written in 1561 well before Shakespeare made thatform indisputably his own. The authors, ThomasNorton and Thomas Sackville were both members ofthe Inner Temple and wrote the play with a clear viewof the dramatic and interpretive skills of their fellowlawyers. It was originally an entertainment performedbefore Queen Elizabeth at Whitehall in January 1562and its macabre plot potentially a disguised warning, ifsovereigns heed not the good advice tendered bytheir faithful if loquacious advisers. Death and familymayhem was the consequence, set out at length. Sovery long speeches and a tremendous test forcontemporary members of the Inn, less accustomedto advocacy of a more expansive age.

We were fortunate to have been directed soeffectively by Oliver Senton, who has been connectedwith the Globe for 20 years and who achieved aminor miracle with his players. The project wasbrought about and overseen by the Director of GlobeEducation, Patrick Spottiswoode, who paid a verywarm tribute to the excellent cooperation he had hadwith Henrietta Amodio and others in the Inn. MasterShields summed up in style, putting the piece inhistorical perspective. The rehearsal period hadincluded a very valuable verse speaking workshop

conducted by Abigail Anderson, Director. Fortunatelyby the time Shakespeare was writing, crisp dialoguewas more in fashion. Plainly this was a very happy cooperative exercise which must be repeatedand much enthusiastic talk suggests that that will be possible.

All we can report is that we all did our best andthis macabre and eloquent story seemed to pleaseour audience, no doubt much assisted by the scholarlyprogramme and some charming musical mobileaccompaniment. The largely young cast performedwith much attack and enthusiasm and it would beinvidious to pick out any of them. But we are proudto report that they included many of the leading lightsof the present Inner Temple Drama Society, who havebecome particularly innovative and deserve evenmore support.

WARSAWADVOCACY VISIT12-14 APRIL

The Inner Temple wasdelighted to accept aninvitation from the BritishLaw Centre in Poland to visitWarsaw for a training

weekend on 12-14 April. The purpose of thevisit was to strengthen further our links withlegal jurisdictions in the Central and EasternEuropean region, to provide opportunitiesfor local students and Bar members topractice examination in chief and crossexamination with guidance from leadingadvocacy trainers and for them to understandbetter the work of an advocate operating inan adversarial legal system.

The expert team, comprising MasterJoanna Korner (Circuit Judge, SnaresbrookCrown Court), Master Simon O’Toole (5Pump Court), Martin Griffiths QC (EssexCourt Chambers) and Leslie Thomas(Garden Court Chambers), arrived at theUniversity of Warsaw Law Faculty on Fridayafternoon where they were greeted by animpressive audience of over 200 students, academics and lawyers. After an introductionby the Dean of the Law Faculty and abriefing on the Inner Temple by MasterO’Toole, Master Korner led an interactivelecture on the art of advocacy with

contributions on examination in chief by LeslieThomas and cross examination by MartinGriffiths QC.

The audience engaged, the team thendemonstrated a criminal trial on a theft offencein full “costume”. Master O’Tooleconvincingly played the role of the defendant, put through his paces by Leslie Thomas asprosecuting counsel. Master Korner presidedand invited the somewhat bloated jury of 200to give their verdict, leaving Martin GriffithsQC triumphant in his role as defence counsel.

THE CENTRALAND EASTERNEUROPEAN MOOTCOMPETITION

The Semi-finals and Finals of this contesttook place in Brno, in the CzechRepublic, on April 27 and 28. The event

has been running for some years; I understand itwas the brainchild of George Dobry, distinguished planning lawyer and sometimeCircuit Judge (still enjoying dinners at theGarrick Club in his mid-nineties), and wasenergetically supported by Lord Slynn, whosewidow Odile was much fêted at this year’s event.

I don’t think the Inn has been involvedbefore this year; I understand from the Sub-Treasurer that Master Beringer put us onto it. Iwent out to take part in the judging. Sophie camewith me, and the Sub-Treasurer was there too aswas Adelina Brad from Bucharest, who did somuch to make the Inn’s Romania adventure – aseminar and a mock trial – such a success lastyear. The contest took the form of a moot onquite a complex EU law issue, conductedentirely in English. Teams of students frommany States in central and eastern Europe tookpart, by no means limited to Member States ofthe EU: Russia, Belarus and Georgia were allrepresented – indeed the Georgian team (who Iunderstand have a noble reputation for thevigour of their partying at these events) camesecond.

The students had to argue a series of difficultlegal issues in a language not their own. In thefinal, at which the panel of judges was admirablychaired by the British Advocate General atLuxembourg, Eleanor Sharpston, the competingteams were pressed quite hard with questionsfrom Eleanor and me: much as an advocatemight be tested in an English court. Theircommand of English was, to be frank, humbling.Their ability to grapple with the law wasimpressive as well.

I think the Inn is enriched by taking part inevents like this. Links between our ancientinstitution and the future lawyers of Statesemerging from oppressive regimes can only be tothe benefit of both; and I hope we will welcomeincreasing numbers of Inner Temple studentsfrom central and eastern Europe.

The sliwowicz was excellent.

Our thanks go to the University of Warsaw foraccommodating the evening session and tolecturers of the British Law Centre for playingenthusiastic witnesses in the demonstration.

On Saturday, the activities relocated to thesplendid surroundings of the Warsaw BarAssociation residence. Our team worked with70 local lawyers, holding case analysis sessionsin the morning followed by smaller groupsessions later in the day which encouraged eachparticipant to conduct their own witnesshandling in the same trial as was simulated theday before.

A successful weekend completed, the InnerTemple delegation were invited to dine at atraditional Polish restaurant, hosted by theWarsaw Bar. They were joined by the BritishAmbassador to Warsaw, His Excellency RobinBarnett, who re-affirmed the importance of theInn’s international work and urged us tocontinue to build excellent relationships in thisregion for mutual benefit.

The Inn would like to thank its membersfor their invaluable contribution of time andexpertise, the British Law Centre (with specialmention to its Director, Denise Ashmore, forher organisational efforts) and to the WarsawBar, led on this initiative by BartlomiejJankowski (co-founding Partner of JSLegal).

This scheme gives students a chance to practisetheir interview technique in front of establishedbarristers prior to their ‘real’ pupillageinterview. The scheme is very popular, andstudent feedback is consistently extremelypositive. As the pupillage interview season is in

full swing, the scheme needs more volunteers. The time commitment is flexible but is usuallyaround 1–3 hours per year. For moreinformation, or if you would like to volunteer, please contact Amy Mason.

The Inn makes a small number of awards eachyear for the purposes of enabling students andnewly qualified barristers to pursue projectsthat will widen their experience of the worldoutside the Bar and thereby enhance the skillsthat they can, thereafter, bring to their practice.Although any project meeting these criteria willbe considered, preference will generally be

given to projects with an international elementand/or which involve an element of unpaid orlow paid work for the community.

In the last academic year, we havesupported 16 internship projects. One of ourstudent members, Sanjay Roy undertook aninternship in Houston, Texas, USA and hasshared his experience below.

INTERNSHIP AWARD REPORTS

SANJAY ROYI completed my internship at the Law Office ofAmy Martin through Amicus in Houston,Texas, USA. Houston is a vibrant and livelycity that is a multicultural melting pot where inone small strip one may run into friendlylocals, splendid Tex-Mex food and homelesspersons asking for change or a cigarette.Houston is truly a wonderful city where I wastold there are two seasons: summer andJanuary. Fortunately my internship lasted untilthe end of December and therefore I did notget to experience the fuss caused by January!

Necrophiliacs, drug dealers and witchdoctors are just some of our clients who havebeen charged with capital murder and who havebeen caught up in the mess that is the Texascriminal justice system. Houston, we have aproblem. These are people who have committedhorrific crimes with fatal and tragicconsequences. Most of our clients had eitheradmitted in confidence that they had committedthe murder or had a significant part to play init. However, the thought of spending the rest oftheir lives in prison, the prison conditionsthemselves and the mental illnesses they have orhave gained as a result of being in prison, givesthem a mind-set of going to trial to try andprove their innocence. My role was to helpAmy Martin mitigate on behalf of our clients inorder to give them the best sentence possible. Inmost cases the only choices are life withoutimprisonment (LWOP) if our client admits toguilt without having to go to trial or the deathpenalty should our client be found guilty attrial.

This is where I experienced the absurdity ofit all. The US elections took place in the middleof my internship and many of the deals thatwere on the table were dependent on which

judge was elected and which District Attorneywas in office. Election fever had taken over theUS and its effect was being felt greatly by ourclients and the Texas justice system. Thestrategic nature of length/type of punishmentmakes the criminal justice system arbitrary andcontrary to principles of justice

Many of our clients have been put throughthe state’s Child Protective Services and havebeen the victims of systematic sexual/violentabuse throughout their childhood which playeda significant part in why they had becomeviolent. The irony now is that the state of Texaswants death for those it was responsible forlooking after.

There were two clear highlights of my timeduring my internship. The first involvedpersuading a client who was facing the deathpenalty to take an LWOP plea (he had admittedhis role in the murder and subsequent rape ofan 85 year old woman and the DNA evidencewas conclusive). If the matter had gone to trialand he had inevitably been found guilty, hewould have been sentenced to the death penalty.

INNER TEMPLE MOOTING SUCCESSMatthew Sellwood, who is a member of InnerTemple and a current BPTC student at City LawSchool, recently served as Senior Counsel for theUnited Kingdom at the Commonwealth MootingCompetition. The competition, held in CapeTown in April 2013, was part of theCommonwealth Lawyers’ Association bi-annualconference and featured the best teams from eachregion of the Commonwealth.

Matthew qualified with his junior counsel, fellow City Law School BPTC student DanieleSelmi, by winning the English SpeakingUnion/Essex Court Chambers National MootingCompetition in 2012 whilst representing OxfordBrookes University. As a result, both were askedto represent the United Kingdom against teamsfrom Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Namibia, and Sri Lanka. Accommodation and meals wereprovided for all teams by the CommonwealthLegal Education Association, which also took thelead in organising the competition.

The moot was based around a fact patternconcerning the legality of unsafeguarded nuclearenergy programmes and the detention of foreignnationals on espionage charges. Each teammooted twice in the General Round, allowingthem to appear as both Applicants andRespondents in front of panels of three judges. The United Kingdom got off to a slow start, losing their General Round moots to Namibiaand India. Their losses were narrow enough, however, that they still qualified for the semi-finals in fourth place due to their aggregate pointstotal, along with India, Australia and Canada.

Matthew was also named the third best overalladvocate over the two General Round moots.

In the semi-final, the United Kingdom teammet India again, and this time they learnt fromtheir previous mistakes and progressed to thefinal, held on the afternoon of the same day. There, they met the Australian team, who wereboth students at the University of Adelaide andhad also qualified for the Commonwealth Mootby winning a domestic competition. The finalwas held before a panel of three Chief Justices, chaired by Chief Justice Archie of Trinidad &Tobago and also including Chief Justice Elias ofNew Zealand and Chief Justice Gardner of theFalkland Islands.

In front of a large audience in Cape Town'sInternational Convention Centre, the closelyfought moot ended with the United Kingdomwinning the Commonwealth Mooting title, andwith Daniele Selmi being named as the bestadvocate in the final round. They each won £500worth of LexisNexis products as well as havingthe honour of being presented with theCommonwealth Shield by the President of theCommonwealth Lawyers’ Association at theconference's closing ceremony.

Matthew was financially supported by InnerTemple in his travel to Cape Town, along with acontribution from City Law School. He iscurrently also serving as the organiser of theLawson Moot Competition at Inner Temple, andis a recipient of an Inner Temple ExhibitionAward for both the GDL and BPTC.

The second highlight was to assist an expertfrom Pakistan in dealing with a client whobelieved he was possessed by an evil spirit thatcaused him to shoot and murder his threeyoung children. Most of my dealings with thisparticular client just so happened to have beenconducted over Halloween! As a result of mywork on this matter, I will be travelling toPakistan in late 2013 to help Reprieve on similaranti-death penalty work.

The Defence team included some of themost hard-working, dedicated and tenacious

lawyers I have ever had the pleasure of workingwith. I was given complete autonomy and wasallowed to help with any of the cases in anyway I thought was beneficial. This could rangefrom visiting clients in jail, contacting/visitingwitnesses, drafting various documents, workingwith our personal investigator and makingsubmissions in court. In particular I would liketo thank Amy Martin, Robert Morrow, LaineLynsey, Laura Lawhon and Dr Durre Ahmedfor all their guidance and help throughout mytime in Houston.

THE INNER TEMPLEDRAMA SOCIETY

The Inner Temple Drama Society has had avery successful year so far. We started ourseason with a traditional pantomime -Cinderella. Having sold out both nights therewas a great deal of pressure on the productionteam to put on a great show. Having rewrittenan original script and composed an originalscore we knew that the show would besomething the audience hadn’t seen before. Our wonderful cast of students, barristers,Benchers, and bells, along with a live band, put on a show that we will struggle to top this year. The audience got into the truepantomime spirit - joining in with the songs, getting up on stage, and resisting the charms of our Ugly Sisters.

Not content with the pantomime though,Society members were flung headlong into theGlobe’s production of Gorboduc. Part of theirRead not Dead series, the production wasaccompanied by two seminars explaining thehistory of the play which was first performedin 1562 for Queen Elizabeth I in Inner TempleHall by members of the Inn. Written by twoInner Templars, Norton and Sackville,Gorboduc was the first English tragedy and thefirst English play in blank verse. This was afantastic experience for the students asked toparticipate and once again the venue was soldout. The production was directed by thefantastic Oliver Senton and introduced byPatrick Spottiswoode – the founding Directorof Globe Education.

IT’S A MAN’S WORLD

After talking to a number of visitorsto the Garden in recent weeks itstruck me how appreciation of itscontents is equally divided

between the sexes: 99% of men compliment thelush green of the lawn while their femalepartners always comment on the colour schemesin the borders. This observation made me realisethat I am a prime example of such stereo-typing,having spent much of my horticultural lifeconcentrating on plant choices and theirpositioning before paying any attention to the state of the lawn. It also made me wonder whether lawns are just a ‘man’ thing, the reason why I cannot recall ever having met a grounds-woman.

However, since arriving in the InnerTemple, I have come to realise that a well-keptlawn is as important to the whole effect of agarden as finely-nurtured flower beds, and Ihave also come to appreciate how much effortis involved in ensuring that it is in the best ofhealth. Indeed, a lawn requires the same levelof care as the most intricately plantedherbaceous border.

The weather, particularly the temperature, dictates the pattern of our turf maintenanceschedule, and it usually isn’t warm enough forus to start the process until the end ofFebruary, initially tackling the most worn areasby hand. These patches are scarified with aspringbok rake and the compacted areas spikedwith a garden fork, after which a sandy top-dressing is applied to improve drainagefollowed by sowing grass seeds, and the areasare then covered with netting to prevent the

resident pigeons undoing all our work. It isonly after this six-week stretch of manuallyraking and spiking over 1000 square metres, shifting 6 tonnes of dressing, sowing over 25kgof seed and pegging down great swathes ofnetting that we are able to deploy somemotorised machinery to tackle the lessdamaged areas.

At this stage I am known to voice theopinion that astro-turf has much torecommend it, but then the seeds germinate, the netting comes off and the fresh growth ofthe grass adds an extra dimension to theburgeoning colour in the surrounding bordersand the filling canopies of the trees above it. Alawn is not just a stretch of colour, but avibrant part of the natural world, as sensitive tothe same environmental variables as a beautifulflower and deserving the same respect.

My better understanding of caring for alawn has had the annoying side-effect ofinterrupting my enjoyment of Wimbledon, wincing as Andy Murray’s feet scrape anotherdozen plants off the Wimbledon turf, so that Imiss his winning ace. It has also made meappreciate what the grounds-men of sucharenas achieve, but it hasn’t made me changemy view that lawn-care isn’t going to become afemale preserve any time soon.
