InHope Apr/May 2014We believe that church is about God and His people. We welcome people of all ages and backgrounds to join us as we celebrate and share God’s love. Our main Sunday meetings start at 10:30am with refreshments

from 10:15am. Whether you are with us for the first time or have been coming for a few weeks, it’s great to have you

with us.

Who We Are. Hope Church is a group of ordinary people of every age and many

different backgrounds. Some have only recently started seeking Jesus while others have been Christians for many years. While still

remaining diverse we do have some significant things in common:

• We have found the person of Jesus to be the answer to our deepest needs.• We have become committed both to Him and to one another.• We love the Bible and God’s presence and look to experience both whenever we meet on Sundays and in Small Groups during the week.

We are part of Newfrontiers, a growing family of 600 churches on five continents. We are also a member of the Evangelical Alliance UK.

Where We Are Going. We want to build a significant church that demonstrates and declares the certain hope that can be found in Jesus (hence the name), that loves one another and serves the Waterfront community and Ipswich. We are on a big adventure together where ‘every life counts’ and everyone is involved.

Our vision.

Steve Jay Maurice Nightingale

Elders at

We want to welcome people into the church, involve them in relationships

with God and with one another. Members are encouraged to serve, share life

and participate in the mission of the church together with the Newfrontiers

Family of Churches and local churches and organisations.

We want to encourage and equip our members to live for the Kingdom of God

in all areas of life, releasing them into God’s freedom and gifting. This also

involves raising up leaders who passionately model our values.

The ultimate goal is to bring the good news of salvation to the

Waterfront, Ipswich and surrounding area, to plant churches in the East of England

and beyond and to influence culture by bringing Kingdom values into education,

business, government, family life and social care. We want to practically

demonstrate our message of hope through generous giving, concern for

the poor and working for social justice.

We want Hope to be the friendliest and most welcoming church it can be, for everyone who visits to feel loved and part of what we do and for people to be inspired to join us in building a God-glorifying church in Ipswich.

Three steps to getting to know more about Hope:

1. Get chatting to someone on a Sunday morning. 2. Visit the Welcome Area on Sundays to:

- sign up for the next Welcome Lunch- find out about Alpha, Tots, Kidz Klub, Oasis, or any of our regular ministries- find your nearest Small Group- get an introduction to someone in the church- buy a recommended book- find out what’s going on

3. Get regular updates of events at Hope by filling in the form on the reverse of this page and handing it to a member of the Welcome team.

WelcometoHopeChurchIpswich!

Find out more...We would love to help you get connected with us as easily as possible, so if you let us have some details we’ll contact you about how to do this as well as emailing you our weekly e-bulletin.

After filling in this page, cut it out, then:

- give it to someone on the Welcome Area on Sunday- or post it to The Orwell Centre, 114 Fore Hamlet, Ipswich, IP3 8AF

MORE THAN WORDSGrace Produces Distinctive PeopleEver noticed how people use words carelessly without thinking of their meaning? “I‘m starving!”, or “That’s truly awesome!”. We all do it…. that’s how their meaning gets diluted. That’s true of us and the Christian vocabulary too.

Before Christians were called ‘Christians” they were known as “People of the Way” (Acts 9:2, 19:9). Why? Because clear evidence in their lives of the values they believed (Acts 2:42). They were more than words. Grace worked out in our lives makes us distinctively different. In this very practical sermon series we look at the DNA of GRACE worked out in our lives – far more than just words!

SCHEDULE

16th -18th MayWe’re really excited to be taking 12 of our GLUE members to EPIC this year! Epic is a weekend away for children in school years 4 - 6 across the region. It’s organised by Andy Jones from Hope, Wymondham and is a great opportunity for children

and leaders to get together for worship, teaching, discipleship, prayer, games, drama, challenges, gunging... (my 1st year immunity has passed - eek!) and so much more!

Please pray for us between the 16th and 18th of May, that the weekend will be a significant moment in each child’s relationship with God, that we’ll all have a fabulous time... and that Hannah will stay gunge free!

Newday is a youth event where thousands of 12-19 year olds (school year 7 upwards) camp together over 6 days. There is also a teaching stream for students and 20s and many adults come to look after the young people, or to serve the event.

Why should people go? (By Joel Virgo)“It’s a total riot! Everyone enjoys it. You get to know new people and build strong, genuine friendships that will last and make a difference in your life. But really, I want people to come to Newday to meet with God, the one who’s revealed himself to us in Jesus Christ. That’s the story for thousands of people who have come to Newday so far. Some of them don’t even believe inGod, but by the end of the week they know he’s real and they want to get to know him more.”

2014Monday 28th July

toSunday 3th August

What is a typical day at Newday? We have morning meetings with times of worship, celebration and teaching. They are always amazing! We have friends who preach and come from all over the world. After lunch people hang out. There are sports and activities on the campsite or people go off into the city on coaches to do social action projects. Evangelism is a highlight of Newday! Then in the evenings, all age groups meet together to worship God, hear from the bible, pray and we ask the Holy Spirit to come and people to meet with God, It’s always a superb occasion. After the meeting, there are cafes, people hang out with friends and eat food... before eventually going to bed.

Marriage is one of God’s great ideas for stable family living and healthy human society. It is so important to him, that he even compares marriage to the relationship between Jesus and the people of God. Join this equipping track to give your marriage the attention it deserves and to make it as strong and fulfilling as it possibly can be.

Singleness presents it’s own particular challenges and pressures, but also provides unparalleled freedoms and opportunities. In fact, when writing to the church in Corinth, Paul tells the unmarried and widows that singleness might well be the best thing for them, as it has been for him - at least for a season. This track explores how to make the most of singleness.

You’ve met Jesus and your life has been turned upside down! But what next? How does Jesus want me to live? How do I leave my old habits of behaviour and thinking behind? What about learning how to pray, developing good spiritual habits, enjoying God’s presence, forgiveness, being a witness in the world, and so much more! This track will help you dig deeper into all these things.

This track is for those people who want to go deeper in learning about the values and vision of Hope Church. What makes us distinct from other churches? What are the core doctrines and values of the church? How is the church structured and governed, both internally and in relation to other churches? What about prophets and apostles? Are roles for men and women different? How evangelical and charismatic is the church? No question is not allowed!

We have set up Ipswich4Families to assist families in Ipswich to develop their capacity to support themselves and find the solutions to the things that affect them the most. Ipswich4Families is modelled on a successful volunteer program in operation across Somerset, who have been supporting families for over 5 years. Here is what some of their families have to say about the support they’ve had:

“They are friendly and nice to talk things over with and they never judge us or speak

down to us.”

“Our mentor isreally good at understanding our situation.”

“A wonderful service! My mentor provided the much needed support, encouragement

and good sound ideas that I needed.”

What is I4F?Ipswich4Families was

set up by churches in Ipswich who have a heart to see the tide of family breakdown turn in our town, to see children who are loved and cared for prosper and family relationships that are constructive instead of destructive and damaging. It is a voluntary sector organisation that assists families to support themselves. It is a long term response.

Who is involved?Ipswich4Families is a

Christian organisation. Our passion is motivated by God’s unconditional love for all people and our desire to see transformation in ourselves and our community. We do this by living out the values of community, equality, inclusivity, hope and transformation. Our volunteers all identify with the vision and values

Family mentors meet with the family regularly, usually in their own home. They listen to families, help find solutions to their challenges and bring hope into their lives.

Family link workers identify the changes the family want to see and work with them towards those goals. They also communicate with further support organisations on the families’ behalf where appropriate.

Community links are encouraged, so that support can be a natural part of the existing community through sports clubs, toddler groups, guides & scouts etc.

Tell us how you got to this point...We made a connection

with a very successful project in Somerset in early 2013. Visiting them, we felt our hearts stirred to replicate what they were doing for families in Ipswich. We have had encouragement and support from local council, police and social services, although to pilot the project we are starting with local church and community connections. We have funding in place, a desk & filing cabinet, and, most importantly, some trained mentors who are ready to go!

An exciting pilot project in Ipswich

I need to start by saying a big THANK YOU! for your giving to Hope Church in 2013.

Whilst general giving was £13,000 less than last year due to various people moving on, total giving including tax reclaim, giving to specific funds and room hire was £26,500 higher than last year – so thank you for your part in that. The chart below shows that 21% of our income was specific offerings. This was 8% last year – it’s great to see us rising to the challenge of being a generous, giving church.

On the expenditure side, staff costs continue to be a high percentage of our total costs and will probably continue this way as we see the staff team grow further.

With income lower this year than last we’ve tried very hard to keep our admin and premises expenditure down and were pleased to see us break even at the end the year.

If you’re interested in seeing the accounts in more detail please contact me and I’ll send you some more information.

Thank you for your continued generosity and can I encourage you with a verse from Proverbs:

Pioneering familiesHanging out with pioneer leaders is such

an exciting and stimulating privilege - while hanging out with pioneering families is a deeply humbling and provocative challenge. Vlada and Sonja Stojanovic trained with one of our churches in Norfolk and then took their two children Iva and Milos with them in order to plant a church in Nis in the south of Serbia. Vlada is Serbian, while Sonja is from Birmingham! Meanwhile, Kev and Emma Reilly from Hackney in London felt drawn by God to pioneer in Gdansk, Poland and have laboured long and hard in recent years to establish an outstanding English school business in the city there.

With them have been their four delightful daughters, Chloe, Izzi, Phoebe and Lula. These children are some of the bravest children I know, and back in the February half term it was a thrill to take them all on a holiday to Paris and to EuroDisney, courtesy of the generosity of the RM family. Cross-cultural mission is exciting and rewarding but also involves many costly sacrifices, and it was wonderful to give these children such a treat as they have thrown themselves into the mission in Serbia and Poland alongside their parents.

Please pray for these families as they make ground for the Gospel in Europe.

Maurice’s time is shared between heading up the leadership team at Hope Church Ipswich and also serving as part of the Relational Mission apostolic team that serves over 50 churches primarily in the East of England and Western Europe. Here Maurice gets us up to speed with his recent travels to visit other churches and leaders in our wider Relational Mission family.

Building in GermanyEach March I tend to find myself in the

south of Germany with our friends at Weil Am Rhein near Basel. This year I visited to speak at their leaders’ weekend, and took the opportunity to catch up with their amazing building project - for a relatively small church they really have done such an outstanding job so far to convert some old industrial buildings into interim meeting rooms as they also erect their main auditorium. Their aim is to have the auditorium ready for the Presence of God tour to visit south Germany in October this year, where they will gather also the with other Relational Mission churches in South Germany and northern Switzerland.

Please pray for them that they would compete this ambitious and epic task!

Equipping Events in EuropeAlso in March I travelled to Berkel in

Holland for the first Relational Mission Prayer and Equipping event on the mainland of Europe. We regularly have the privilege of hosting such an event here at the Orwell Centre for the churches of Relational

Mission, but this was the first time we had held such an event on mainland Europe, so it felt prophetically significant for us, and so it proved to be. Sixty or so leaders from the RM churches in the Netherlands, plus also representation from Sweden, Germany and the UK, gathered for 2 days of wonderfully encouraging prayer, worship and ministry. The presence of God was powerfully with us, friendships were established and strengthened, and the sense of shared mission to the mainland was driven deep in our hearts. We have barely managed to scratch the surface of gospel need on the mainland - my personal prayer is to see 20 churches established in the Netherlands and 20 in Germany as a base camp to drive deeper into the mainland.

Please pray with me that God will give us favour and grace to see excellent New Testament pattern churches multiplied in these nations and beyond in the coming yea rs.

1. Mr Cow, Julia Plaut CD for the udder (!) 5s Created especially for pre-school children, this is a great collection

of songs - full of fun and praise.

It’s simple: easy enough to join in with even if you’re a baby!

It’s lively: great for dancing to and making up actions

It’s packed with truth: simple truths that make God stuff completely normal.

Recommended by: Isabelle and Amelia O’Connell (Age 2 and 1)

2. Chuffed Live DVD and CD - under 12s Fun and funky praise and worship for kids It makes worship songs fun: It makes worship songs funThe kids enjoy learning the actions and dancing along. The songs are

easy to learn but challenging enough for older children (some get faster & faster!)

It’s inspiring: We all enjoyed Duggie Dug Dug’s visit to Hope Church - get your Hi 5s ready!

It’s packed with truth: simple truths that make God stuff completely normal.

The DVD includes breakdancing: What more could a 6 year old boy want? A man who can spin on his head...thanks Doug, something to aspire to?!

Recommended by: Reuben and Emily Taylor (age 6 and 3)

3. Hillsong Kids: Tell the World (approx. 5 - 11) How great our God is. Perfect for your children’s ministry or home.

It’s Jesus focussed: Tell the world takes you on a journey to do exactly that... tell the world that Jesus lives!

It’s enjoyable: The worship and production quality lives up to Hillsong’s usual high standards, meaning that this album is good to listen to - for children and adults - and stand up to many repeats.

It perfect for church and home: GLUE and Zigzag are currently working through a teaching series based on the truths contained in these songs. Listen at home and carry on the conversation.

We run our courses every 2-3 months over four consecutive Sundays with coffee and cake – it’s informal but very informative! And it’s a great way to make new friends who are in a similar situation.

Our Getting Connected course is a great way to find out more about our vision and values and some of the things we are involved with in the Town and beyond. All are welcome; whether you are new to Hope Church, or have been with us for some time and wanting to become more committed – we’d love you to join us – come and discover our heart as a church.

Getting Connected

“It was great hearing the general vision and ethos of the church and how it has transformed in 10 years,

really exciting”

“I enjoyed hearing everyone’s stories, meeting the group and finding out more about my church”

“I enjoyed finding out what’s going on in the church and

how the church reaches the community”

“I was made to feel valued”

Our last course started back in January and we asked those who attended what they had thought about it. Here are some of the responses:

God is about a great work in our day and it is always exciting to see what God is doing in and through his church, and to know that Hope Church Ipswich is part of this great adventure. God has given us a big vision and a growing passion and we warmly encourage you to consider joining us in this mission, if you have not already done so. We place a very high value on committed membership and, through the ‘Getting Connected’ course, we welcome the opportunity to share with you our core

“I enjoyed getting an insight in what the church is about and what it stands for - I got the impression that it’s morethan a church”

“I appreciated the willingness of the leader to

welcome feedback”

values and the distinctives that are central to our expression of Christianity and church here at Hope Church. The course also gives you the opportunity to spend some time with the elders and other leaders of the church, where you can ask questions and build stronger friendships. Attending the course does not oblige you to join the church, but our hope and prayer is that you will catch our passion and vision and decide to fully join us at Hope Church.

Our next Getting Connected course will begin on the 11th of May, from 11.00am-12.15pm downstairs in the office. If you would like to join us please let us know so we can book you in. [email protected]

For “Kesgrave” read “pretty much anywhere you can go east of Ipswich without getting your feet wet”. We meet every Wednesday alternating between “normal” small group meetings and socials. The socials are a mix of men’s evenings, ladies evenings and family events. The venue rotates around people’s houses; the aim being to allow as many people (i.e. those with kids), to make it.Wednesday evenings. Kesgrave / Woodbridge. [email protected]
