Congratulations - you are a survivor!

IF you are a motorcycle dealer (franchised or independent), aperformance/tuning centre, a repair shop, a specials/customs builder, aparts and accessory distributor/importer, a designer or brand owner, or

a manufacturer of anything that sells in the motorcycle market, from partsthrough to bikes, who is still in business - congratulations! You survived!!

There have been plenty of false dawns in the past few years, plenty of momentswhen it appeared that the apparently endless spiral of downturn may have appearedto be about to reverse, but so far all of them have proven to be just exactly that - false.

Personally I thought that we were turning the corner in 2010, and that in thatcontext the two or three years of downturn we'd seen by then was probably not sucha bad result - given the terrible prophesies that accompanied the 2008 banking crisisand so-called 'credit-crunch'.

It wasn't to be though - the trend just continued inexorably down. Month aftermonth, quarter after quarter, year after year, the sequence of bad motorcycle salesnews, contracting shows, closing shops and bankrupt parts, accessory and apparelbrands (and media for that matter) just kept on spirallingever further south.

However, at the end of 2011, it appeared that a lotof parts and accessory vendors had started to get to apoint where they had house-kept their way towardsbusiness stability. While parts and accessory salesoverall had only stabilised (at best), some businesseswere seeing modest single digit growth, and most hadmanaged to get back into profit simply by adopting a strategy that allowed them tomake the best out of whatever was available to them.

By the end of 2012 most vendors were facing the future with an all-new lean, mean, svelte, slimmed down, improved version of themselves, and while one man'sgrowth was still another man's loss last year, the better businesses did indeed seegrowth and make money. Indeed 2013 was pretty good, overall, for many parts andaccessory businesses, and by the time that the industry gathered for the Milan Showlast November, further depleted though that expo may have been in vendor numbers, there was at last a better 'vibe' among the exhibitor community and many, maybeeven the majority, reported having had a good week.

At that stage the gradual 'decline in the rate of decline' of new motorcycleregistrations that industry association ACEM had predicted (at their industrypresentation at INTERMOT in 2012) had translated into the first signs of a stabilisationin the downward trend, with some markets returning to growth in the final quarterof last year, and others (such as the UK and Germany) arriving at a position wherethey could point to 24 months of very modest decline or modest growth - namelystability.

There were exceptions of course, there still are - Italy for example. But even therethe statistics for the first two months of 2014 (published elsewhere in this edition ofInternational Dealer News) do point to stabilisation ahead, while in other importantmarkets rebound does appear to be in-play.

After what we have all been through since the last peak in European PTWregistrations (at around 2.7m in 2006 and 2007), the current apparent growth isclearly nothing to get excited about as such. Last year closed out at around 1.3mregistrations, a greater than 50 percent haemorrhage in just 6 years, but the declinehaving been so long and so deep, and the so-called growth still so fragile and fresh,

that the best we really hope for is the aforementioned stabilisation. As I said, of itself, if this year's market performance so far is no 'biggie' in statistical

terms, it would appear to suggest that if the present trend is sustained, and the markethas seen some 200,000 or so more sales than last year, then by the end of this yearwe will be able to look at 2013 and 2014 as a 24 month period of stability - a periodthat saw a largely flat trend overall compared to the prior years, and this would bethe important first step on the road towards recovery.

At this stage the primary motivator isn't yet the statistics as such, but it is anunderlying significance what continued stats such as those we are currently seeingmean for the market in the long-term.

Regardless of the numbers we see, and how soon we see them, what we havealready seen provides important reassurance in terms of suggesting that post 2007market atrophy has been primarily driven by macro-economics and consumerconfidence, rather than the more worrying strategic issues that have been frighteningmany market analysts.

The current positive stats are showing a much morerapid recovery in motorcycle sales than in small cc units. That means the sales that dealers are making have ahigher net value, which is a good thing, and that theunits concerned are destined for higher mileage -another good thing.

Europe-wide statistics on the number of miles beingridden are difficult to arrive at. In those countries where

such numbers are available the decline in annual two-wheel mileage (where therehas been decline) has been nothing in percentage terms compared to the decline innew model registrations.

This is reflected in the change in vendor parts and accessory sales patterns, whichhas seen top ticket spending fall away and the growing dependency onworkshop/service and parts counter revenues and product volumes.

It is also reflected in estimates concerning the aging of Europe's 'fleet' (which hasbeen substantial as riders have delayed replacement spending), and on the decline inthe 'bike park' - the total number of PTWs actually registered for road use.

There has been 'bike park' decline (an estimated 35.5m units by the end of 2012from a peak of around 37.7m units in 2011), but the decline has come late in thedownturn/recovery cycle (the 'bike park' actually continued to grow right through to2011), and it has been modest (in percentage terms) when compared to the declinein new registrations.

This all points to one of the biggest fears that many have been voicing being aducked-bullet - namely that demographics, regulatory, licensing and training changeshad eaten away terminally at the preparedness of 21st century citizens to embracetwo wheels, regardless whether their motivation is lifestyle, commuting or leisure.

While keeping the 'sport' cool and managing access are of huge importance, theevidence appears to suggest that the loss of new sales volume has been due toeconomic rather than image factors. 'Pheeeuue' to that I say!

In its Group Business Plan for thefinancial years to 2017 Piaggio says it"foresees a small upturn on theEuropean PTW market, from 1.1m unitsin 2013 to 1.3m shipments by 2017.

After six consecutive years of overallmarket decline the focus [for Piaggio]will be on the premium two-wheelersegments, in both the scooter business(with Vespa, the Mp3 three-wheelerrange and the GT scooters) and themotorcycle business (with Moto Guzziand the development of the Apriliasports brand). STAT ZONE

FURTHER good news is emerging fromthe Spanish market – as this edition ofIDN was going to press the tradeassociation there (ANESDOR) releasedregistration data for March whichshows that the positive trend seenthere in recent months has continuedas the peak selling season approaches.

Total PTW registrations for Spain inMarch were 9,571 units, which addedto the 6,749 seen in February and7,123 seen in January puts the marketat 23,443 total PTWs for the first threemonths of the year.

This is up from the 19,346 unitsbeing reported for the equivalent year-ago period, putting the total PTW

market in Spain at +21.1 percent forthe first quarter of 2014.

ACEM data shows that theANESDOR figures for total PTWregistrations in Spain last year of107,303 units represented a 9 yearlow.

However, with growth havingreturned in September 2013(compared to September 2012) theSpanish market has now posted 7consecutive months of growth, meaning that 2014 should see anannual improvement by the end of thisyear for the first time since ACEM showthe market peaking at 395,815 units in2006.

Motorcycleregistrations far exceed small cc PTWregistrations in Spain (at a ratio of 6:1in 2013) and to the surprise of mostinternational industry observers alwayshave done. For the first quarter of thisyear the Spanish market was worth20,565 motorcycles, up 24.9 percenton the first quarter of 2013.

Having been down by 33.3 percentin 2013 (compared to 2012), Marchmotorcycle sales in Spain were up by45.4 percent (8,482 units versus 5,832in March 2013), though compared toNorthern Europe the peak sellingmonths in Spain tend to be in thesummer rather than the spring.

Growth in Spanish market

FOLLOWING nine consecutive years of annualdecline in the number of Powered Two-Wheelers (PTWs) exported to Europe by the‘big-four’ Japanese motorcycle manufacturers, data for the first two months of this yearsuggests that their dealers may finally beabout to see a turn in their fortunes. Whilst two months of data aren’t enough toestablish robust trend conclusions, and whilethe extent of decline will under anycircumstances require many years of growthin order for sales to approach historic levels,

when taken in conjunction with the nationalsales data that has been emerging so far thisyear, industry analysts are pointing to theselatest figures as suggesting that the bottomof the European motorcycle industry’s verybroad ‘U-curve’ may finally have beentransitioned.Total PTW exports to Europe from Japan stoodat 17,261 units (+27.21 percent) in Januaryand 18,468 (+12.3) in February, or a year todate total of 35,729 units, which is 19.04percent up on the first two months of 2013.

This follows a month onmonth reduction in the rate ofdecline since February 2013and the return to export growth inthe final quarter of 2013 – total Japanesemanufacturer PTW exports to Europe weredown by -9.52 percent (147,965 units) for lastyear. To put these figures into context, Japaneseexports to Europe had declined by -6.1percent in 2012 and -23.58 percent in 2011,having peaked in recent-cycle terms at481,427 units in 2004. Prior to that, themarket has seen several spikes in cycles overthe years – reaching 690,629 in 1998 with anall-time high of 921,593 in 1981.In 250cc+ motorcycle terms, the picture issimilar (the huge majority of Japanese unitexports to Europe are motorcycles), with theJanuary and February year-to-date dataclosing out at 17,751 units for those twomonths, which is up +14.05 percent over thefirst two months of 2013.Total Japanese manufacturer 250cc+motorcycle exports to Europe were 130,455for 2013 (-11.48 percent) and 147,377 (-5.63percent) in 2012, following a -22.66 decline in2011 (156,166 units).

MOTOREX has added an SAE 5W/40 viscosityoil to its successful Top Speed 4T range ofsynthetic performance oils. The oil is certified to JASO MA2 standard, meaning it fulfils "even the strictestrequirements of the motorcycle industry".Top Speed 4T is a high-performance oilspecially developed by Motorex for use inlarge displacement, high powered, wet clutchmotorcycles whose manufacturers do notspecifically require fully synthetic oils. In TopSpeed 4T, base oils are chemically refined andraised to the performance levels of fullysynthetic oils by using MC (molecularconverted) technology. Due to its wide viscosity range, the newMotorex Top Speed 4T SAE 5W/40 is said toensure a stable film of lubricant over a widetemperature range, optimising friction toeffectively minimise wear. Tested for catalystcompatibility, it is also said to significantlylower oil consumption and ensure smoothclutch operation and shifting. Its suitability forengines with wet clutches is documented byan official MA2 certification of the JapaneseAutomotive Standards Organisation (JASO).The requirements of the API classifications SN,SL and SJ are also fulfilled.Top Speed 4T SAE 5W/40 is available in one-litre packages with a practical integral spout, and in a four-litre package and in several sizesof containers for workshop use.

The Spine EVC uses a high-tech,deformable structure composedof splinter-proof plastic materialsand EVC (Evoluted ViscoelasticCells) in its construction. This isclaimed by Zandona to offerprotection for the wearer’s backin the event of a collision, whileoffering good lumbar support. The plates in the protector arejoined by a drop wire system, which is said to guarantee impactdistribution throughout thewhole of the protector’s surface.Additionally, the Spine EVC has an‘Anti-Torsion System’ which limitsrearward twisting. The Spine EVC reaches Level 2performance according to theEN1621-2/03 normative. A second back protectorproduced by Zandona is itsEsatech Back Pro. The external plate of the EsatechBack Pro is a hexagonal nitrileanti-shock structure (EsatechSystem), which has beenformulated to absorb high impactenergies and to dissipate the

energy over the whole protectorsurface. The internal padding iscomposed of EVC (EvolutedViscoelastic Cells) and waterproofanti-shock material with a highperformance/weight/thicknessratio, which is perforated to helpperspiration travel from thecontact area to the outside. The waist closure has a doubleelastic regulation system, theback protector itself is said tofollow the natural forwardmovement of the spinal column, and is also foldable for easystorage. The Esatech Back Pro reachesLevel 2 performance (4.6 kNaverage result) in EN1621-2/03tests.

AGV’S GT Veloce helmet hasachieved five stars in the SafetyHelmet and Assessment RatingProgramme (SHARP) ratingsystem, making it one of the310 safest helmets in the world. The SHARP programme wasstarted in 2007 by the UKDepartment of Transport, aimingto provide all motorcyclists withan independent safetyassessment of the helmetsavailable on the market. One of the key factors of the GTVeloce achieving the five-starrating is the company’s use ofan innovative constructionsystem based on the ‘HumanEngineering’ concept andapplying a new design process, which starts from the innercomponents that are in directcontact with the head andgradually moves to the outershell. This process results in thehelmet being designed aroundthe rider’s head providingmaximum comfort, ergonomics, safety and aerodynamics. Designed for GT and SportTouring purposes, the GT Velocefeatures an outer shell made infour sizes made from laminatedSSL (fibreglass and aramid), andan inner shell in EPS in four

sizes. The IVS (IntegratedVentilation System) wasdesigned and optimised in awind tunnel, consisting of fourfront vents (three at the frontand one on the chin guard) andtwo rear exhaust vents. Thetotal surface area of air vents is193 percent greater than on theGP-Tech helmet.A new metal visor mechanismwith two-stage pivot closure isused on the GT Veloce, and aquick release system allows fortool-free removal andreplacement of the visor inseconds. The scratch-resistantvisor with a wide field of visionis suitable for Pinlock insertsand tear-offs, and offers 100percent UV protection.

NOLAN has used composite fibre construction for itsnew X-1003 flip-front helmet to bring the weightdown to a claimed 1,500g for a medium-sized shell.

Available in three outer shell sizes (XXS-XS-S-M1/M2-L/XL-XXL-XXXL), the X-1003 features aremovable and washable lining, with new shapecheek pads, which are said to offer improved helmetstability and comfort for spectacle wearers thanks tothe ‘Eyewear Adaptive System’. The visor is equipped with a tool-free quick releasemechanism and also features a double actionmechanism allowing the visor lock to preventaccidental visor opening at high speeds, or visordemisting at low speeds or stops by a minimum visoropening.
