LST Newsletter Summer 2012
Dick (as he was known) came to us as Vice-Principal in 1981 and was with us some all-too-short seven years. That was afterOxford, Anglican training and PhD at Bristol, lecturing in NT in Nigeria (69-73) and longproductive association with Tyndale House,Cambridge (73-81), and before he went tobe Principal at Wycliffe (Oxford:89-95): so,at very least, a colourful character. Dickcame to us with two wonderful‘credentials’: scholarship and personality.
Personally he was a gentle giant, an out-going, welcoming, entirely encouraging, genial and thoroughly Christian person,
while also an intellectual of considerablecommand. There was always an open, embracing, ready-to-laugh look on his facecombined with what you knew to be depthand rigour. He deftly organised us, and leftnone with complaint: you could not wishfor a better, more personable, seniorcolleague. And on engagement with widercontentious public issues, he was alwaysEvangelically critically searching, butgenerous in tone.
I give heartfelt thanks to God for DrR.T. France!
