3 TRACKING

3.1.1 Trackable Items The software solution otherwise known as URCHIN will be tracking the majority of the clicks, uniques, and where the users are going, however, I would like to track the customization features to determine which users are actually using the customization such as tracking the navigation bar dragging feature, and tracking the amount of times the user saves links, amount of times users log in.

3.1.2 Methods Again the main method will be the Urchin software; however, custom tracking needs to be integrated into the navigation bar to track the drag tab feature, as well as the number of times users save links.

4 SESSIONING

4.1.1 Overview Ultimately when a new user visits information.com, they are not sessioned. However, when the user changes the tab layout, then the first layer of sessioning begins. The user does not have to be logged in to change the layout or tab order of the navigation bar. The second layer of sessioning begins once the user has logged in.

4.1.2 Zero Session User Scenario A new user to Information.com can first enter a keyword, then click on the Top Nav tab of their choice, then select the bottom nav tab source, and upon clicking it be directed to the search results page, whereby the results will display source related to the keyword typed. These types of users I have termed “zero session” users, because they have not taken any action which is then remembered.

4.1.3 Layer One Session User Scenario When a new user to Information.com, changes the tab order within the navigation at any point, then have then performed an action which is remembered, as a tab order sends a cookie to the users computer. These types of users I have termed “layer one session” users.

4.1.4 Layer Two Session User Scenario When a new user to Informtion.com, registers and then logs in, or if the user is a return user and then logs in; then the user has become a “layer two session” user. Both a zero and layer one will be prompted to become a layer two if at any point they do the following actions:

1. Click on Login

2. Click on Save in the search results

3. Click on Save with Note in the search results

4. Click on Share in the search results

5. Click on Edit on any of the modules on the homepage

4.1.5 Layer Two Session Returning to Layer One The only way, a user can return to a layer one session from a layer two is by letting the session either expire, or by click on the Log Out button.

5 THE USE OF RSS, XML, RDF

5.1.1 Overview The majority, if not all of the news feeds to be displayed in the top headlines module will be from an RSS/XML source. A list of sources for the Top Headlines module can be found at Appendix 3. In addition, other search results can are pulled via XML. The list of search result / tab sources and their feed format can be found at Appendix 1.

7.1.5 7.1.9 7.1.8 7.1.10

7.1.7

7.1.1 Login, Register, Customize Buttons The LOGIN button takes the user to the login page.

The JOIN NOW button takes the user to the register page.

The CUSTOMIZE NAVIGATION button takes the used to the navigation edit page where they can change the sources of both the top and bottom navigation bars, essentially changing the tabs to be viewed.

7.1.2 Top Navigation The top navigation consists of broad categories of search. Each tab is draggable, and the draggable feature is tracked per user. The user does not have to be logged in to use the draggable tab feature. Each time a user moves or drags a specific tab horizontally to another place holder, a cookie is sent to the users’ computer whereby, the layout remains the same upon their return. A user, first clicks on the top category or tab, and then automatically the sub navigation and specific tabs or sources appear related to the top tab or category. THE DEFAULT DISPLAY IS: Web Search Selected (top), and Google Selected (bottom) for a user who has never been on the site, however, if the user has returned the tab layout will remain as they last left it due to the cookie. The navigation bar is always displayed on every search relative page.

7.1.3 Sub Navigation The sub navigation bar consists of specific tabs or search sources which fall under a specific top navigation category. By clicking on the specific top navigation tab or category, the related sources or tabs in the sub navigation will appear. Each of the sub navigation tabs are also Draggable, and a cookie is sent to the users computer each time the users moves a tab whether it be from the top or the bottom navigation. THE DEFAULT DISPLAY IS: Web Search Selected (top), and Google Selected (bottom). THE DEFAULT DISPLAY IS: Web Search Selected (top), and Google Selected (bottom) for a user who has never been on the site, however, if the user has returned the tab layout will remain as they last left it due to the cookie. The navigation bar is always displayed on every search relative page.

7.1.4 Defaulted Tabs Each category from the top navigation has a defaulted sub nav. Thus if the user types on a specific top nav tab, and does not choose or change the sub nav tabs, when they enter a keyword, and hit submit, the default results will be returned.

DIS. GROUPS > DEFAULT = Google

PEOPLE SEARCH > DEFAULT = Yahoo People Search

7.1.5 Search Field The search field is an integral part of the navigation bar, and is always displayed with it. If a user types in a keyword without selecting a tab, the results displayed will be the default which is Google. If the user has returned to the site for a second time, and previously the changed the tab layout so that for instance, the shopping tab is selected, and the sub navigation tab bizrate is selected.. if the user types in a keyword, they will return results from a bizrate shopping search. If however, the user does not enter a keyword at all whether it is their first time to the site, or whether the tabs are changed or not, and they hit the submit button, the return result will look like the following (see image below). And whatever tab structure or layout they had will be displayed on the blank search results page.

7.1.5

7.1.6 Tour The take a tour link is always displayed on the navigation bar. It essentially opens a new window which is a flash demo covering how the site and its features work. More than likely it will be built with robodemo, and Ben will be the resource on creating and designing this. It cannot be built until the site is fully functional. It will probably be one of the last things created. It is very simple to build.

10 FOOTER SEARCH

10.1.2

10.1.1 Overview & Location The footer search is located on every single page EXCEPT on the blank keyword search page.

10.1.2 Source Dropdown The user can perform a search from this search box, and when the user types in a keyword, and then hits the submit button without choosing another category from the dropdown other than the default “web search” then they will return results from the default search which is Google. Each category within the drop down returns defaulted source search results. Meaning that if I type in a keyword, and then choose blog from the drop down, the returned results will be from the default choice for blog. THE TOP NAVIGATION will reflect this, meaning that if I search from the footer search bar, the top navigation tab layout will follow suit.

13.1.1 Home Link The home link merely takes the user back to the home page.

13.1.2 Tabular Navigation & Overview The tabular navigation cleanly lays out the option for the user whilst editing the module they chose to additionally edit the other modules. It entices the user to make more customized changes.

The total number of shortcuts to be displayed at one time is 12. There are however, numerous other choices of shortcuts which the user may choose, but they cannot exceed 12. If the user has chosen 12, and then tries to add another one, they are prompted with a JavaScript alert stating:

YOU HAVE EXCEEDED THE TOTAL NUMBER OF SHORTCUTS. PLEASE REMOVE TO ADD, THANK YOU ☺

© 2004 Oversee.net CONFIDENTIAL Sykes, J. Ben Page 24 of 77

Information.com Requirements Documentation Version 4.0

The above statement doesn’t necessarily yield to make a comfortable user experience. Thus, the text must either be reworked, or the JavaScript Alert must be customized similar to the image below:

The effect of the smiley plays an integral part into the human psyche, and as subtle as it is, it makes the user comfortable.. SERIOUSLY!

If however, the user has a total of 12 shortcuts, and then decides to remove choices, they are only allowed to remove 8, Meaning that the default allowance or minimal allowance of shortcuts at any one time is 4.

13.1.3 Wireframe Image This image merely provides a small visual for the user so as to make the editing interface understandable.

13.1.4 Available Shortcuts Box This box displays the available sources for shortcuts. The shortcuts listed are the ones not used. A user may click on the remove button to move a shortcut/source from the “your shortcuts box” to the Available shortcuts box, and vice versa.

13.1.5 Your Shortcuts Box This box is only allowed to contain 12 shortcuts/sources. If a shortcut is displayed in this box, it means that it will be displayed on the home page. If, however, a user does not have the maximum number of shortcuts allowed in this box, then may then click on the add button to move additional shortcuts from the “available shortcuts box” to the “your shortcuts box”, and then by clicking the finished button, they will then have added these shortcuts to the homepage.

13.1.6 Add and Remove Buttons The add and remove buttons are used to moved shortcuts from the “available shortcuts box” (not displayed but leftover), and the “your shortcuts box” (to be displayed on the homepage).

13.1.7 Finished Button The finish button essentially is a glorified save button. However, as it is used in Yahoo’s customization, I have thus added it here. The branding of this button has already been made. When a user adds or removes a shortcut, and then clicks the finished button, the user is then returned to the homepage, and the change which they made is then displayed in the welcome module.

19.1.3 Available Choices Text Area This text area displays a list of feeds a user can choose from add as displayed content to the homepage. To select a feed, the user must first highlight the feed of their choice, and then click on the ADD button to move it to the shortcuts text area. The user can not directly add a feed to the displayed news text area. That choice must be made by using the positioning bar.

19.1.4 Displayed News Text Area This text area is only able to hold one feed. The user can choose which feed they wish to have displayed on the home page, and which other feeds to add the shortcut sub nav bar. The default selection for displayed news is BBC News. The user may add up to 5 feeds to the shortcuts text area, and then move their selected feed up to the displayed news text area.

19.1.5 Add & Remove Buttons These buttons are used to move feeds from the shortcuts text area, and the available choices text area. The maximum number of feeds allowed for the displayed news text area is 1, and the maximum number of feeds allowed for the shortcuts text area is 5. If however, the user tries to add more than five, rather than display an error message, it just won’t work. I user may however, remove up to 3 feeds from the shortcuts area. Thus at the very least only the displayed news feed, and two shortcut feeds will be displayed. If, however, the user attempts to remove all of the shortcut feeds, an error message will be displayed.

19.1.6 Shortcuts Text Area This text area is limited to a minimum of 2 sources, and a maximum of 5. The default number of sources viewed is 5 here, and one in the displayed news section. When a user clicks on the Add button, the sources are added to this area, and from here, using the positioning bar, the user may move up the desired displayed news feed.

19.1.7 Positioning Bar The bar is fairly self explanatory. It is used to move feeds or sources from to and from the displayed news text area, and the shortcuts text area. If however, a user clicks on the “X” button on this bar, the selected source will be moved back to the available choices text area.

19.1.8 Finished Button The finish button essentially is a glorified save button. When a user adds or removes feeds to and from the displayed news text area, and the shortcuts area, and then clicks the finished button, the user is then returned to the homepage, and the change which they made is then displayed in the today’s headlines news module.

20.1.1 Overview This page enables a user to pick and choose which source (sub tabs) are displayed when they search. For instance, a regular user may decide that he or she only wants the Google, yahoo, and a few other tabs to be displayed under the web search main tab.

20.1.2 Home Link This link takes the user back to the home or index page.

20.1.3 Help Link This link takes the user to the help page, where related navigation editing pages are displayed.

20.1.4 Main Tab Selection Currently there are a total of 9 main tab selections, and this may grow in the future. Nevertheless, a user may only choose 8 tabs in which to display on the main page. This is due to the fact that the site is initially designed around a 800 x 600 screen resolution, and really the navigation bar sets the width of the page across the board. As the user is only allowed 8 main tabs to choose from, and being that the selection is by checkbox, if a user has 8 selected and then clicks on a ninth, that ninth choice will be selected or check marked, but a check box from the section above will become unchecked.

20.1.5 Sub Tab Selection The sub navigation consists of actual web sources with fall under the specific category or main tab. A minimum of 3 sub nav tab must be displayed, and are predefined (notice the grayed out check boxes). A maximum of 8 sources can be displayed. This is the same number of tabs allowed for the main tab selection.

20.1.6 Finished Button The finish button essentially is a glorified save button. When a user clicks the finished button, the user is then returned to the homepage, and the change which they made is then displayed in the navigation bar.

When this button is pressed, an email is sent from the server to the addressed recipient, and confirmation text is displayed just above the form. In addition, the SENT TO, and SENT FROM information is displayed just below the form.

22.1.5 Form Confirmation & Error Reporting Both the form confirmation information and Error information are displayed in the same location.

22.1.6 Displayed Email Result The below image represents the result of submitting a form to another person. I personally, think this is a bit bleach and needs to be redesigned whereby the user receives an embedded signature with the information.com link and tagline.

31.1.1 Overview The related searches bar, is always located in the search results whether the user is logged in or not. It displays links or other searches which are directly related to the keyword(s) searched. Each link essentially acts as a “submit.” For instance, when a user performs a search, the results in the related searches are just that, however, when the user clicks on any of the links within the related searches bar, a new search is performed displaying a whole new set of search results and related search results.

The related results bar is, however, NOT visible within web site directory results.

32 MY RESULTS MODULE LOGGED IN

32.1.2

32.1.3

32.1.4

32.1.4

32.1.5

32.1.1 Overview The “my results” module has a few special features. They include, the ability to save and annotate specific search results, and save and track all searches by date. In addition, for the saved search results, the user is able to create custom categories in which to put his or her results, and of course any saved result can be shared, and thus emailed to another party.

32.1.2 Saved Pages Header This header has no interactivity. It is not a link, and cannot be clicked upon. It does display the number of, in parentheses, actual pages listed within it.

32.1.3 Actual Saved Page or Result Each page or result that is saved appears in the My Results module under the section entitled SAVED PAGES. Each saved page or result has many features.

POSITIONIONG CARROT: Being that the user has the option to create a custom category, and categorize his or her saved results; the user must use the positioning carrot to move the specific result / page into the category which he or she made.

NOTE DISPLAY: A user has the option to save a page / result and also add a note to that which they saved. If however, the user does not add a note, and just merely saves the page / result they have the

option within the SAVED PAGES section to add a note. Any note saved either from the search results or within the module itself is displayed here.

SHARE LINK: When a user clicks on the share link, the user is taken the share results page, whereby they have the option to send the save page / result to another person. The saved page / result is embedded in the form on the shared results page, and is emailed to a recipient when a user fills out the form and clicks submit.

DELETE LINK: The delete link is fairly simple. It merely deletes the saved result / page from the “My Results” Module.

32.1.4 Create & Edit Categories All saved pages / results are by default uncategorized. A user may then create a custom named category in which to move his or her results into. Each category created has the ability to both expand and retract which enables the user to modify the amount of displayed space. Nevertheless, a page or result must be moved into the category by using the positioning carrot.

32.1.5 Saved Searches Each time a user performs a search by merely entering a keyword into the search text field, that result is recorded and displayed in the “SAVED SEARCHES” section of the My Results module. All saved search are automatically categorized under the date in which the search was performed. The date category format is the “DAY OF THE WEEK, 11/11/2004”. Being that each saved search is automatically categorized, the user has the option to minimize or maximize to conserve or modify space. Days or categories in which the user did not perform any searches will merely be displayed with the following symbol (-)

When a user clicks on any of the saved searches links, a search with that keyword is performed.
