Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRDlGovt of India visualize~ building UIY of a natioilaldatabase of library holdings in the country Alllibraries are expected to contribute their data to thisnational database For putting this plan into actionMHRD desires that all libraries in the country shouldfollow a uniform standard for data entry ASub-Group was set up by MHRD to identi fy afOllllat for this purpose The Sub - Group hasrecommended that MARC 2] format be followednow onwards for data entry in libraries The mainreason for preferring MARC 2 lover CCF and otherfonnats was that most of the countries in the worlduse MARC and it is comprehensive having lll)mberof fields Also there is a constant developmenttaking place in MARC 21 and is updated regularlywheteas CCF has become stagnant With MARC 2 Ibased national database it will be easier to exchangedata with other countries

The Sub - Group also advised INFLIBNET Centreto adopt MARC 21 and inform all universitylibraries about this decision and to ask them to useMARC 21 Accordingly all libraries covered underINFLIBNET are advised to start using MARC21For libraries usingSOUL software there is no causefor any alarm over this decision INFLIBNETCentre has already developed an interface softwarefor exporting data from SOUL to MARC 21incorporating all primary fields identified by theSub-Group We have already initiated work ondeveloping another interface for importing data fromMARC 21 to SOUL This development is expectedto be over by end of Apri I 200 I Both theseinterfaces will be provided to SOUL users Then weintend to develop next version of SOUL totally basedon MARC 2 I Till the second version of SOUL isdevelopedlibraries having SOUL can continue to

use it and use the interface for converting SOUL datato MARC 2]
