Manufacturers have welcomed the federal government’s budget package that delivers more than $5 billion in benefits to 96 percent of businesses with turnovers of less than $2 million.

The package provides significant tax relief and new measures to make it easier for small businesses to invest and grow.

From July 1 this year small-incorporated businesses will receive a 1.5 percent company tax cut and small unincorporated business owners will receive a 5 percent income tax discount on their business income up to a maximum of $1000.

These measures are worth $3.3 billion over four years.

At the heart of the package is the government’s $20,000 asset write-off scheme.

Under this scheme all small businesses can immediately deduct the cost of new assets worth up to $20,000 they start to use, or install ready to use, from now until June 30, 2017.

The total value of this measure is estimated at $1.8 billion over four years.

WHY ADVERTISERS SHOULD MAKE THE MOST OF STIMULUS PACKAGE

Harvey Norman chairman Gerry Harvey said recently the federal government’s $5.5 billion small business budget package was so good for retailers they could have written it themselves.

"I wrote the budget and (Treasurer) Joe Hockey read it," Mr Harvey quipped.

The new package encourages small businesses to go on a two-year spending binge in a bid to stimulate industry.

Gerry Harvey thinks it's the best thing since pop-up toasters – and we agree!

The measures contained for SMEs in the budget are great news for the manufacturing sector.

The stimulatory budget, combined with record low interest rates and falling Australian dollar have raised industry hopes.

This will provide an enormous boost to industry confidence.

So now is the perfect time to sell, sell, sell.Industry Update has many thousands of

readers in the under $2 million dollar bracket so this is a great opportunity to reach them. Under the government's plan, small businesses can claim an immediate tax deduction for every item they purchase up to $20,000, such as materials handling equipment, machinery, electronics and office equipment.

This 100 per cent write-off will be available to businesses with an ABN, earning less than $2 million a year.

Though it will last for two years, companies will receive even more benefit this financial year because the tax rate is 30 percent. After July 1, 2016 the rate drops to 28.5 percent.

It’s a small difference but I’m sure there are plenty of people that will still want to save that extra 1.5 percent and most importantly they will want to get a 100 percent tax deduction in this year.

We’re not suggesting companies should spend beyond their means, but if you need to make a capital purchase, what better time to do it. If each company buys just one item under the new stimulus package, it will make a huge difference to the nation’s economy.

In a world of increasing global competitiveness and customer expectations, Australia is expanding its industry base by making the most of innovation supported by cutting edge science and technology.

It is in Australia’s best long-term interests for governments, industry, researchers and academics to work together.

The Australian Government is putting science at the centre of industry to identify and seize new opportunities in this swiftly advancing economy.

A robust and national science policy will underpin a flexible and prosperous economy and help our country capitalise on its strengths.

In the recent Federal Budget, we not only delivered a jobs and small business package worth $5.5 billion, which will encourage growth, investment and employment – but we also reaffirmed our commitment to strengthening the connections between research, science and industry.

The Government announced an extra $70 million in funding for research organisations to support world-class infrastructure that allows science and industry to work together to drive productivity and competitiveness.

We have committed $20.5 million for the Australian Synchrotron, run by Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), to continue operating in 2016-17.

The Synchtron is a critical piece of landmark scientific infrastructure. It benefits a broad range of industries including mining, health, manufacturing, food security, energy and bio security, as well as improving productivity and research commercialisation.

Through the Synchrotron, Australia is contributing to the development of innovative devices and materials for energy production and transport applications.

We also announced an investment of $49.1 million for new infrastructure at ANSTO, including for management of byproducts from expansion of ANSTO’s critical nuclear medicine production and the continuation of cutting-edge environmental, health and industrial research.

ANSTO also produces 30 per cent of the world’s irradiated silicon, used in applications like fast trains and hybrid cars.

The Government’s investment in scientific organisations like ANSTO and important assets such as the Synchrotron will spread the benefits Australia is reaping from science across all sectors of the economy.

These investments are strategic and targeted and will boost Australia’s science and research capacity.

They’re also important examples of the measures we’re taking to safeguard our future competitiveness and ensure Australian industry grows and prospers in the long term.

To assist Australian manufacturers to transition to high-value internationally competitive manufacturing, I have recently announced $40 million in funding for the Cooperative Research Centre for Innovative Manufacturing (IMCRC).

CRCs are a great example of the Government’s industry policy and Industry Innovation Competitiveness Agenda in action.

In fact, the agenda and its essential ingredients like the Industry Growth Centres and a number of complementary programs, are all about maximising practical outcomes from our very significant public investment in research.

The CRCs are a very successful way of bringing industry and research organisations together to apply the latest research knowledge to the real world challenges facing industry.

CRCs will work closely with Growth Centres and

small and medium enterprises will be assisted by the Government’s Entrepreneurs’ Infrastructure Program.

The IMCRC will receive the funding over seven years to develop competitive industries in areas of global growth, including additive manufacturing, lightweight robotics and medical devices.

It will work closely with the Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre to assist Australian manufacturers to transition from traditional manufacturing to knowledge-intensive, internationally-competitive activities.

We also announced that the CRC for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRC ORE) would receive $34.45 million to continue the work it’s doing to improve the efficiency of mineral extraction.

The CRC ORE, which has its headquarters in Brisbane, will benefit Australia’s mining services sector by helping to recover lower-grade ore deposits in a more cost effective and energy efficient way.

Elsewhere, Industry Growth Centres will help drive the transformation of Australian industry in the food and agribusiness; mining equipment, technology and services; oil, gas and energy resources; and medical technologies and pharmaceuticals sectors.

In addition to these initiatives, the Government will this year continue to further deliver on its national science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) policy, implement new measures to boost the commercial returns from Australia’s research and implement National Science and Research Priorities.

The benefits to Australia from greater collaboration between science and industry are clear.

It’s all about turning our ideas into advantage and about ensuring science and research work in tandem with industry to deliver a stronger future for Australia.

WHEN IT COMES TO INNOVATION, AUSTRALIA IS BACK TO SQUARE ONE

Inventing the wheel was a triumph. But having to reinvent it is profoundly frustrating, and unfortunately that is becoming the story of innovation policy in Australia.

The Abbott Government has scrapped or defunded programs such as the Innovation Investment Fund, Enterprise Connect and Commercialisation Australia, which were helping Australian businesses bring new ideas and products to market. We are back to square one.

I am not alone in saying this and it is not merely a partisan point. The chief executive of AVCAL, the Australian Private Equity and Venture Capital Association, Mr Yasser El-Ansary, has observed that “venture investment is about backing a company for five to 10 years, and changing policies every three years means hitting the reset button.”

Other countries with which we like to compare ourselves understand that constantly hitting “reset” means that innovative investment – investment that transforms the economy – won’t happen.

In the US, for example, the Eisenhower Administration established the Small Business Investment Company (SBIC) in 1958, to help new firms raise the capital they need to survive and flourish.

Nearly 60 years later, SBIC programs, now under the aegis of the US Small Business Administration, still thrive with bipartisan support. In a country almost synonymous with capitalism, no one derides these programs as “picking winners” or suggests that real entrepreneurs don’t need them.

The worth of the SBIC programs is accepted because the success of the firms these programs have helped speaks for itself.

And it is because, as investments and guarantees, these measures provide liquidity –

access to capital for small and start-up businesses – without being a drain on the Federal budget.

Here in Australia, however, the fog of ideology is still used by some to mask success and to pretend that public investment in a business amounts to the taxpayer handing over a blank cheque.

Those who work in the venture capital industry know that this is not so. As Mr El-Ansary has pointed out, the employment website Seek was created with help from the Innovation Investment Fund.

That was at the beginning of a technological revolution which is continuing to transform all forms of business, especially manufacturing. If Australia does not put in place industry assistance programs that allow innovative firms to share in the revolution, our global competitiveness will decline.

That is why, in his Budget reply speech, Bill Shorten announced that a Labor government will create a $500 million Smart Investment Fund, to invest in early-stage, high-potential companies in partnership with venture capitalists and fund managers.

The Fund would operate in two rounds over five years, and recipients would be able to obtain expert advice on commercialising ideas and gaining access to international networks.

A Shorten Labor Government would also establish another new body, StartUp Finance, to work with banks and the finance industry to help more Australians turn goods ideas into marketable products.

Many of Australia’s international competitors – the US, the UK and the EU, for example – already have schemes of this kind in place.

Mr Shorten said that Smart Investment Fund and StartUp Finance would “enable entrepreneurs to access the capital they need to start and grow their enterprises”.

And it is growing an enterprise that matters. As Mr El-Ansary has said: venture investment means backing a company for five to 10 years.

The Smart Investment Fund and StartUp Finance are part of a range of measures Mr Shorten announced that will boost Australia’s innovation capabilities.

These include setting a target of 3 per cent of GDP to be devoted to research and development by the end of the decade, and incentives to increase the numbers of young Australians studying engineering, technology and science.

Australia needs programs that will do again what the Innovation Investment Fund was able to do, while learning the lessons from both its successes and its shortcomings.

Innovative new firms need the certainty that public investment won’t be stripped away because the government of the day wants to scrounge savings or has put ideology ahead of reality.

Withdrawing assistance from firms that create jobs for Australians and take new products to market is a false economy because in the longer term these firms will generate revenue flows to government and increase national wealth.

If other democratic capitalist countries recognise this and guarantee assistance to firms that will benefit from it, surely Australia can too.

We don’t have to keep reinventing the wheel. We need to use it.

NMW 2015 PROVES AUSTRALIAN MANUFACTURING IS ALIVE AND WELL National Manufacturing Week (NMW) 2015, Australia’s premier manufacturing exhibition, ended on a high with strong visitor numbers and positive feedback from exhibitors.

This year’s event at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre featured more than 200 exhibitors showcasing the latest industry technology. Event organisers Reed Exhibitions said the event attracted a significant number of C-level executives, managers and other business decision-makers responsible for making technology investments in their businesses. National and international visitors attended NMW to investigate new products and services. Mr Alistair Boyd of Innovative Welding, whose stand showcased welding technologies including the new K-Tig welding system, said: "We've had a huge amount of interest and a good number of leads, from all around the world, including quite a few from New Zealand.

"It really helped our cause to give both a presentation and a demonstration at NMW. In fact, one visitor to our stand had been specifically directed by colleagues in the United States to come to the demo – we were blown away to have interest from the US.”

The show also featured new solutions

from Bosch, CGB Precision Products, Adept Turnkey, Millsom Materials Handling and dozens more.

For the first time, Bosch brought five business units to NMW, with combined expertise in manufacturing and automation systems, incorporating Rexroth’s world class hydraulics, linear motion, drives and controls.

In a landmark display, Bosch Manufacturing Solutions showcased its improved version of its Mechatronics unit for automated picking and placing, tightening, visioning, automated testing and more. Bosch’s comprehensive power tools range was also on display as well as hot water & heating systems for standard hot water needs right through to manufacturing applications up to 20MW. CGB Precision Products showcased breakthrough technologies for aviation, defence, and other advanced manufacturing applications. Among these is the latest from OAV Air Bearings, delivering lower friction, higher speed and lower torque. They have indefinite life and no heat generation at high speed for precise positioning and amazing overall performance.

And Adept Turnkey is demonstrating smart machine vision and automated inspection technology advances, including a

new technique for inspecting products with a full 360° view. Visitors to the Adept Turnkey stand were treated to demonstrations of the latest Smart Cameras, Vision Appliances and 3D inspection products. Millsom Materials Handling showcased their new vacuum lifter Jumbo Flex 50. This is designed for frequent, very fast movement of items weighing up to 50 kg. The Jumbo Flex works with suction pads for different items – such as sacks – and is operated by one hand, so you can use the other hand to quickly, safely steer your sacks into place.

NMW 2015 also presented a full speaker program, with industry experts including ASEA's Linsey Siede, Dr John Blakemore, KPMG's Dr Gary Veale and international LEAN guru, Bob Sproull sharing strategies for boosting performance and underwriting innovation. VIC Shadow Minister for Innovation David Southwick, was a special guest at the presentations. As well as attending Andrew Lowe, Shelston IP's presentation on Turning Innovation into Market Success, Mr Southwick toured the exhibition showcase, commenting: "Having run businesses before entering politics, I understand the great opportunities trade shows create in networking and education."

"It's been great to attend the National Manufacturing Week exhibition and meet many innovative businesses. NMW has established a fantastic synergy of innovators and new solutions, which is great news for local industry."

Above all, the common thread in feedback is that visitors attend NMW to see and touch new technologies,” said Anthony Reed, NMW 2015 Exhibition Director.

“Almost everyone comes away from NMW having seen game-changing products and services. A comment that was overheard more than once during this year's event is that it's just an eye-opener about the range of technologies that is available to industry.”

is critical to Australia’s economic prosperity.“Our future growth will come from

growing small business into big business,” he said during the Budget speech.

“Every big company in the world started small. This is a budget for small business people who want to innovate and grow”, he said.

“I believe our nation’s best days are ahead of us. So now is the time for all Australians to get out there and have a go.”

Other key budget measures for SMEs include:• Expanded Fringe Benefits Tax exemption for work-related portable electronic devices• Capital Gains Tax rollover relief when businesses change legal structures• Expanded tax concessions for employee share schemes• Streamlined business registration process• Removing obstacles to crowdsourced equity funding• $330 million for training programs to support young people to become job-ready• $1.2 billion in subsidies for employers that hire specific groups of job seekers

Small Business Minister Bruce Billson said the government’s small business package is not about “splashing cash handouts and hoping for the best”.

“We are not saying to people ‘government knows what to do with your money, and we know how to spend it better than you’,” Billson said.

“We are just making sure small business people are supported to get the best out of their money and get more of it returned sooner.”

Billson said many small businesses will immediately benefit from purchasing new equipment and claiming the amount under the government’s $20,000 asset write-off scheme. Mr John Brittain, managing director of Materials Handling Pty Ltd said the budget small business stimulus package is a great initiative to get the economy firing again.

“Honestly, it’s long overdue, Mr Brittain said. “Most companies have been waiting for stimulus like this to be thought of and acted upon. There are a great number of small businesses in this country, so it should assist them with the tax break and larger companies should see improvements in their order books.

The good thing is the incentive will last until mid-2017, so it won’t be a flash in the pan.”

Mr Brittain said during the Global Financial Crisis, we kept hearing that three letter word – GFC – but that’s all it was, an acronym.

“In Australia, we didn’t suffer as much as the rest of the globe did. But despite that, we’re still paying the costs of it today.

“Most companies have been searching for stimulus, similar to what was introduced during the GFC, but not much help has been forthcoming … until now.”

And Mr Brittain said assistance to the manufacturing sector should not stop with the new Budget package.

“We pay a lot of money for the services of these people and their bureaucratic cohorts, so we should be reaping the rewards for such generous considerations, he said.

“There needs to be a number of other enterprising projects undertaken to make us even stronger again. Australian businesses need their confidence back.

“There is a shipload – if you know what I mean – more that could be done.

“Come on, Mr Abbott – a bit more ingenuity and inventiveness would not go astray.”

Mr Greig Maver, managing director of MAVERick Equipment, lifting equipment specialists, is another industry leader who is excited about the new package.

“If this doesn’t help, nothing will, he says. “This is the best thing we have seen in years. “I don’t think people realize how good this is.”

“I currently have about 400 pieces of stock in the warehouse under the $20,000 threshold, he said. “And credit approved customers can now buy stock from the company on 30-day terms.

“So if they buy items to the value of $20,000, by the time they have to pay, they will have already received $6000 back in their hands.

“That’s ridiculously good.”Mr Maver appealed to companies not to

Austech, Australia's premier advanced manufacturing and machine tool exhibition, ended on a high in Melbourne last week, with exhibitors reporting large crowds and strong leads.

Held this year at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, Austech is the only show in Australia specifically targeted at the metalworking, machine tool and ancillary market.

This year’s show attracted more than 11,000 visitors over four days.

The show again featured the exclusive Manufacturers Pavilion, featuring presentations from a broad cross-section of industry leaders.

The show was co-located with National Manufacturing Week, Safety First, 3D Printing and the SMART Conference.

Austech covers the key areas of machine tool and sheet metal working including: • CNC machining centres: horizontal and vertical machining centres• Turning machines: CNC lathes, automatic lathes• Sheetmetal: forming, bending, punching, shearing equipment• Special purpose machines: grinding, broaching, boring, milling, waterjet cutters• Laser equipment: laser profiling, laser cutting, marking and engraving• Ancillary equipment: cutting fluids, finishing, coatings, robots, cad-cam software• Digital and additive manufacturing• Inspection, Measurement, Metrology• Quality Systems• Reverse Engineering

This year’s show featured the latest technology in machine tools.

This included Mazak’s new Mazatrol SmoothX CNC and DMG Mori’s Celos.

The former is said to work four times faster than its fastest predecessors. A 19’’ panel with a multi-touch home screen presents all critical data to operators within a single page view.

As John Hart’s Mark Dobrich explains, the controller also reduces machining time by maintaining optimal acceleration/deceleration control for a combination of axes and smooth corner control reduces vibration and shortens part-machining cycles.

DMG Mori’s Celos looks like a stylish digital device from the future. It provides a uniform user interface for all new high-tech machines from DMG Mori.

A unique 21.5” multi-touch screen displays all Celos Apps, which provide the user with integrated management, documentation and visualisation of order, process and machine data. Additionally, machine operation is simplified, standardised and automated, DMG Mori claims.

Simplifying automation is another topic at the show. John Hart is showcasing an automated machine tending cell. There are of course many benefits of automation such as reduced costs, lower health and safety risks and increased production quality.

However, as Mark Dobrich points out, many people are scared of complicated programming procedures.

That’s why the company has developed its CellPro Modular Robotic Systems, which can be tailored to customers’ needs and comes with the CellPro cell controller which is intuitive, allowing the user to quickly and easily create programs without any robot programming knowledge.

Walking through the Okuma stand, visitors experienced a similar concept from Belgium-based company RoboJob, which Okuma is the exclusive distributor for in Australia.

The mobile 20kg robot is clever enough to stop whenever an operator comes too close. This makes it a perfect mobile solution for workshops as it does not require any safety-fences – while being safe.

For Okuma General Manager Phil Hayes automation is crucial in order to remain competitive.

“You have to apply the costs to creative work and remove repetitive work,” he emphasises.

The Okuma Multus U4000 was certainly a crowd puller as well. The multi-tasking machine features an automatic tool changer, a 240° B-axis range, generous Y-axis travel (up to a whopping 6000 mm between centres for the larger model) a subspindle and a lower turret for additional capabilities and increased throughput.

While there is no real Formula 1 car at the Alfex/Haas stand, the American racing spirit is still evident.

The US-based machine tool company established the Haas F1 Team in 2014, and on the machine tool side of things, business is going great in the United States with many companies bringing quality work back to the US.

In Australia times are not the brightest for machine tool distributors and haven’t been for quite a while – but according to most exhibitors including George Buhagiar from Alfex CNC , the market is stable, but has currently no potential for expansion.

Jens Hardenacke, CEO DMG Asia/Cooperation Markets, agrees. The aerospace market is still performing strongly, which is reflected by high-tech CNC machining centres on show including the DMC 80 U duoBlock 5-axis machining centre.

“Our market share is stable and will

not change much in future, but we are aiming for the 20% mark,” Mr Hardenacke said. “I worry about the mining sector and automotive of course is in decline as well.”

Omax Corporation and Headland Machinery, the company’s exclusive distribution partner for Australia, showcased the versatility and high-speed cutting precision capabilities of the Maxiem 1530 JetMachining Centre. The all-new 1530 represents the company’s next generation line of Maxiem machines.

Building on the cost-effective, yet high-performance technology of its predecessors, the newly redesigned 1530 offers enhanced durability, improved performance, and faster production times for an overall increase in productivity and profitability. At Austech, the company paired the 1530 with a reliable 40-hp direct-drive pump to demonstrate how easy it is to cut virtually any material quickly and efficiently.

Okuma showcased three levels of new technology, including 5-axis machining. New advanced technology machine models of 5-axis milling with turning, amazing advances in the user-interface of Okuma’s own OSP controller technology and packaged, kit-style automation solutions.

Shera Bonnet & Associates had a new web-based solution for monitoring the efficiency of CNC machines real time on show. The company makes use of touch screens and tablets or smart phones to allow users to view up to the minute status of their CNC machinery from anywhere they have an Internet connection.

The show also featured a major 3D printing exhibition.

Objective3D, which was part of the Stratasys Pavillion, featured the world’s most versatile multi-material 3D printer – The Objet 500 Connex 3 by Stratasys.

The Objet 500 Connex 3 brings new production-floor efficiencies to fruition with in-house tooling, custom jigs, assembly fixtures and gauges. With triple-jetting technology, hundreds of Digital Materials, and two spacious build-tray sizes, Connex3 is designers/engineers product development and production powerhouse.

For jobs that require a range of mechanical, optical or thermal properties, only Connex3 lets you combine up to three base resins in pre-set configurations to produce up to 82 materials in a single build.

BQ showcased Ciclop, the first 3D scanner with 100 percent free software and hardware. It has been designed and developed with the community in mind, so that they can use it, innovate with it, make their own changes and share them. Ciclop is a rotating triangulation-based 3D laser scanner (it uses laser light to capture the geometry and texture of the object rotating on a turntable) and it is multi-platform. To scan, Ciclop uses Horus, a free software entirely developed by BQ.

With significantly longer tool life and improved edge utilization in field tests, Kennametal’s newly launched Beyond Drive portfolio of cutting inserts are being called the new gold standard for turning.

Adding a new titanium oxy-carbonitride outer coating (TiOCN) not only increases wear and abrasion-resistance for lower temperatures and longer tool life, its bronze colour is an effective wear indicator as opposed to black-surfaced inserts.

Where inserts had been thrown away early in favour of safety because of poor wear identification, operators are now reporting notably longer service life per edge, even in aggressive environments. Depending on the application, field tests are showing up to 30% more parts per edge.

Beyond Drive is an entire portfolio of new grades and geometries that emphasize ease

of selection and use across work materials and turning conditions. Specific customer demands addressed by Beyond Drive include reduction of notch wear in demanding applications and reduction of crater wear in difficult materials, all while improving wear identification.

Beyond Drive is specifically designed for leveraging improved performance and longer life in many critical turning tasks across steels, stainless steels, cast irons, and high-temperature alloys.

By cutting costs, avoiding waste, and producing many more higher-quality parts per cutting edge, manufacturers in transportation, energy, general engineering, and more are taking a significant leap forward in productivity and increased capacity.

For example, the Beyond Drive MR (medium roughing) insert has a high positive rake angle that works with the smoothly curved cutting edge to reduce cutting forces and extend tool life. In terms of chip flow, it’s like nothing ever seen before, says Kennametal turning expert Lothar Unglaub.

Indexable double sided inserts are subject to high cutting forces, and are commonly seen as less stable.

MR’s rake profile without the points of load concentration results in an extremely stable insert body, despite the high positive rake. Even with high depth-of-cut applications, turning processes are safer and more stable, ensuring lower load on the machine tool and workpiece.

Also, MR inserts also feature formed-in coolant channels that deliver flood coolant efficiently to the cutting edge. Improved heat control translates into smoother cutting and extended tool life.

Adding the benefit of increased stability to Beyond Drive’s design and performance advantages is Kennametal’s KM4X spindle connection. Sizing the right spindle connection with the right machine tool helps optimize the productivity of the entire system. The combination of the KM4X system’s high clamping force and interference level leads to a robust connection and extremely high stiffness and bending capacity for greatly

improved performance. KM4X overcomes the limitation on bending capacity present in other connections, allowing maximum available spindle power and torque to be utilized in critical operations like turning of high-strength materials.

Concern is being expressed in Europe about the unethical use of the coveted CE mark.

Since 1985, this mark has been the mandatory “conformity marking” for certain products sold within the European Economic Area (EEA).

This “badge of conformity” is the manufacturer's declaration, that the product meets the quality and safety requirements of the applicable EC directives.

It also is found on products sold outside Europe that are manufactured in, or designed to be sold in, the EEA. This makes CE marking recognisable worldwide.

600UK is a major global supplier of machine tools. Its Managing Director Mike Berry recently told top management that the rules were being shameless flouted for commercial advantage. To be in a position to affix the CE mark to any machine (or any product) a manufacturer must be able to prove that the product meets all the necessary design, safety, and other regulations in force, and be able to fully support this with a comprehensive Technical File that proves compliance in all respects. Mr Berry added: “We at 600UK have such files available for inspection by the regulatory authorities at any time. This, I regret to say, is not always the case with other manufacturers, particularly from certain Far Eastern countries, who affix a CE plate but cannot substantiate the required technical documentation.

“We are greatly concerned about manufacturers of low-quality machines that are using the CE mark.

A number of these machines fail to meet the strict technical

and, even more importantly, the Health and Safety criteria set out by the CE regulations and required compliance with all the relevant EU standards that have to be met to achieve compliance.”

The subject is close to Mr Berry’s heart. He personally raised it with Government Ministers and the industry’s trade organisation, the MTA.

“Executives have taken note, and assure me they will support action, as appropriate, in specific cases where the evidence is clear, Mr Berry said.

“The Health & Safety policy team of the EEF – Britain’s principal industry organisation – also is aware of this issue.

“We at 600UK/Colchester/Harrison are fully CE compliant, and are privileged in being classed as the ‘benchmark’ machine manufacturer for conventional lathes.

“When, in the mid 1990s, the CE regulations were being written, our then Technical Director was the Chair of the MTTA Technical Committee, and a key member of the European Committee that oversaw the CE standards and, as a result, this was generally based on our products.”

As part of the comprehensive new product development programme, the company is bringing two heavyweight additions to the hugely successful Harrison Alpha XS Manual / CNC lathe range – the best-selling combination lathe in the world. The heavy-duty 1660XS and 1760XS models have been specifically designed in response to increased global demand for turning larger diameter components accurately, efficiently, and more cost-effectively.

These powerful, large-capacity lathes complement the hugely-successful Alpha 1350XS, 1400XS, 1460XS, 1550XS, and super-heavyweight Alpha 2800XS.

Both the newcomers offer a high-powered 18.5 kW motor with 105 mm spindle bores (1760XS model has an optional bore of 155mm), outputting a spindle-speed of 2000 and 1400 rpm, respectively. These models are of cast-iron construction, to give optimum stability, and can be specified with a centre distance from 1.5 to four metres. Both are fitted with the same unique Fanuc 0iTD / Harrison Alpha control system as the rest of the range. Sydney-based CNC engineer for 600, Pat O’Doherty, said: “This offers customers huge flexibility through the unique Harrison control, allowing five ways of working for the operator – from manual turning through to full CNC production incorporating the renowned Alpha System,

which is widely acknowledged as the most simple and intuitive system in the world to use.”

Workshops worldwide have become aware of the remarkable Gripfast combination power chuck that caused such excitement at the renowned EMO exhibition in Hannover last September, and a sensation at the TIMTOS show in Taiwan in March. Workshop managers from all over the world have now viewed the video on YouTube that demonstrates the Gripfast combination power chuck, which is now in full production at fellow 600 Group company, Pratt Burnerd. Comprising a chuck, a collet chuck, and mandrel all in one unit, this unique work-holding system comes into its own when used on production CNC turning centres for medium to small-batch production, enabling CNC lathe operators to increase throughput with minimal non-machining time.

Designed to increase productivity, the Gripfast is available on Colchester Lathes’ new Tornado CNC production turning centres. This system, described as “brilliant” by the trade press, is complemented by the Gripsafe Gripmeter (RFG). This radio-frequency device helps workshop managers to fully meet health and safety requirements on turning machines ranging from centre lathe to full CNC. Mr Purser said: “It is highly dangerous and irresponsible to ignore loss of grip. In industrial or educational environments, Pratt Burnerd has made it possible to avoid long and tedious calculations.

“The most reliable way to avoid problems is to accurately measure the gripping force being applied by the chuck under static and rotating conditions.” Make your mark Another 600 Group company is making headlines, as it capitalises on the demand for its laser marking devices in North America. Electrox has merged with Ohio-based laser specialist TYKMA in a major deal that will enable the Letchworth-company and its new partner to work even more closely with current and prospective customers throughout the US and Canada.

Electrox has grown significantly in recent years, doubling turnover between 2009 and 2014, thus prompting the decision to look West. The company was founded 40 years ago, and now manufactures a variety of fully-integrated laser marking systems that use an intense beam of light to permanently engrave or mark a material’s surface. International sales manager, Jim Leach, said: “You might say that, on our own, Electrox had half of the alphabet – with TYKMA integrated into our operation, we can offer the full A-Z of laser marking needs, from entry-level systems up to high-end multi-axis machines.”

Mr Leach added: “Electrox systems are designed and built to be fast, easy to use, and cost-effective, because there aren’t any components to wear out.”

The company’s products are already installed, serviced, and supported by 600 Machine Tools throughout Australia.

Alex Zaighout, co-founder of Busicom Solutions, a specialist provider of mechanical trade labour and welding services to the Australian Industrial Sector, is not your average boss.

A former electrical engineer, this innovative young entrepreneur likes to think outside the square.

When he first launched his business about 10 years ago he couldn’t work out why he was getting negative feedback from a handful of clients. Through this fully equipped facility at Kingsgrove in Sydney, Busicom conducts practical testing of tradesmen, welder qualification and the development of weld procedures. This means the competency of each worker on the books can now be gauged. A full assessment is carried out on each job candidate by a certified, internationally recognised welding inspector.

“It is no ordinary test … with this test we are able to determine their levels of competency and guarantee employers they have attained a certain benchmark, says Alex.

“That has been a huge investment for the company.”But the results have been staggering. Alex has now set a

new benchmark for labour hire companies.“There are 3,386 labour hire companies in Australia and

none of them offer the same stringent training program, he says proudly.

“That’s our point of difference.”By delivering fully trained and highly competent workers

Busicom has been able to fill a void in the marketplace.Alex says he does not want to be categorized as ‘just

another’ labour hire company. “The level of service we can provide is not the same as

all those other companies, he says. The service we provide is certification. If you need a guy to be certified to a certain qualification, we can deliver.”

Busicom Solutions tests the competency of all welders including boilermakers, pipe fitters, fabricators, mechanical fitters, industrial electricians, riggers and, as required, other specialised engineering trades. Leading international welding equipment manufacturer, Kemppi, has unveiled its new range of welding helmets – the Beta 90 FreshAir, Delta 90 FreshAir and the Delta+ 90 FreshAir.

The helmets have been specifically designed to provide the utmost protection against welding, grinding and associated airborne fumes and dust contamination – and to ensure user comfort while meeting Australian standards.

The lightweight Beta 90 FreshAir helmet provides users with maximum flexibility and can be worn by welders working in any position whether undertaking arc welding, plasma cutting, gouging or grinding operations. It provides excellent safety and protection for the eyes, face and lungs. The Beta 90 features a 3-stage flip lens to protect against welding, tacking and grinding operations.

In the case of overhead welding applications, the Beta 90’s shield incorporates a perimeter deflection rim to offer additional protection.

The helmet also boasts a dual-skin hatch design to reduce the transfer of heat to the welders face. To ensure that any harmful airborne welding fumes and dust contamination are eliminated, the Beta 90 design incorporates the “positive pressure” principal.

The Beta 90 FreshAir can be combined with either a battery powered FreshAir filter pack or a locally supplied airline. Cool and clean breathing air is channeled through a filter and directed over the welder’s face. The positive pressure design also ensures that breathing is effortless.

Plus, the Beta 90’s adjustable fabric face seal creates a safe and easy breathing zone to deliver all day comfort for the welder. The air-flow reduces weld lens misting and a multi-point head harness ensures maximum adjustment and comfort for the welder.

The Delta 90 and Delta+ 90 FreshAir helmets have been specifically designed for those working in extreme conditions such as shipbuilding, heavy fabrication, and mining and construction sites, where hardhat protection is advised or essential.

Both the Delta 90 and Delta+ 90 incorporate many of the features of the Beta 90 but provide all round head protection. The Delta 90 FreshAir helmet integrates head, face and respiratory protection in one strong model to deliver maximum protection and comfort for welder. This model can also incorporate optional hearing protection.

For additional protection and safety, the Delta+ 90 includes a separately hinged welding visor that can be raised independently from a large and clear impact grade face shield. This provides the user with exceptional vision of the work area for both pre and post welding and fabrication as well as a safe and clean breathing environment. Plus, the welding visor can be easily removed when welding protection is not required but high quality respiratory, head, face and hearing protection are essential.

Both the Delta and Delta+ 90 FreshAir models can be combined with either a rechargeable, battery powered FreshAir filter pack or a local air source to ensure the welder has access to cool, clean breathing air. The FreshAir Flow control comes standard with an alarm. It’s intelligent warning system provides both visual and acoustic signals if the battery is drained, the filter is clogged or the airflow is insufficient, to help protect the user. The rechargeable battery powered system also provides total freedom of movement in the workplace, particularly when compared to a static airline fed option. This unrestricted mobility allows the welder to complete the task at hand efficiently. For user comfort, the welder can adjust the airflow from 140 1/min up to 210/min and

the filter separates no less than a considerable 99.998% of the airborne particles to help keep the user safe. Plus, the rechargeable NiMH battery is operational for up to 10 hours, ample time for welders to complete their tasks.

All three FreshAir welding helmets have been rigorously tested and meet Australian and New Zealand standards. The Beta helmet meets AS/NZS 1337.1 for welding and grinding. When combined with the FreshAir Flow control it has been rated to AS/NZS 1716. The Delta and Delta+ 90 meet standards rating AS/NZ 1801 and AS/NZS 1337.1. Together with FreshAir Flow control it is rated to AS/NZS1716.

Mr David Green, Managing Director of Kemppi Australia, said the helmets were thoroughly tested in Australia and Europe by SAI Global, leaders in risk management and compliance.

Mr Green says the FreshAir range not only provides a comfortable working and breathing environment for workers, it protects against the ‘flash’ from the brightness of the welding spark.

They are also ideal for ‘hard hat’ areas where objects can fall from heights.

Mr Green says one of the main advantages with the new range is the lightweight design.

“They are 30% lighter than anything else on the market, which means they are extremely comfortable to wear.”

The helmets also come with the convenience of an auto-darkening lens with a unique clip on the lens. When the welding job is finished, users can flip the lens and it becomes a full face helmet for grinding operations.

The Safety First Conference & Expo held in Melbourne last month gave visitors a fascinating insight into the latest workplace safety technology and solutions.

This year visitors had a rare opportunity to gain an insight into the work of Safe Work Australia and its member organisations.

Recent data from Safe Work Australia shows the manufacturing industry had the second highest rate of serious workers’ compensation claims of any industry in Australia. Some manufacturing sub-sectors have rates more than twice as high as the Australian rate. Fabricated metal product manufacturing had a rate of 54.3 claims per 1000 employees, more than four times the Australian average.

Safe Work Australia, the body charged with leading the development of national policy to improve work health and safety wants to see this change.

Michelle Baxter, CEO Safe Work Australia, addressed the conference on an Update on the future direction of Safe Work Australia and the Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy 2012-2022.

“We have made huge gains over the last 30 years. The number of work-related traumatic fatalities each year has

more than halved and the number of serious claims has also decreased dramatically, but there is more we can and should do if we want to reduce the huge personal, social and economic costs of work-related injury, disease and death,” said Ms Baxter.

“The Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy 2012-2022 (the Australian Strategy) is key to our efforts to drive further improvements in health and safety over the coming years.”

The Construction and Manufacturing industries was a specific focus of the Safe Work Australia’s second Australian Strategy Virtual Seminar Series (VSS) during National Safety Month in October this year.

“We realised that to provide relevant information to businesses and community leaders we needed to move at their pace and with innovative approaches. This is why we launched the VSS during Safety Month in October 2014. The VSS provides live webinars, case studies and opinion pieces by credible voices. It is accessible to anyone, at any time, and anywhere, streamed to mobile devices and workstations across the country.

“It is a very important time for Safe Work Australia as we see our strategy achieving measurable

improvements in work health and safety and new approaches being successfully implemented.”

FOUR REASONS WHY NATIONALLY RECOGNISED FORKLIFT TRAINING IS ESSENTIAL

STYLISH NEW FOOT PROTECTION FROM OLIVER

BY MARK PARTRIDGEIn an industry that’s constantly evolving, having the right qualifications and workplace knowledge is crucial. With worker fatalities on the rise, the construction and mining industry is definitely one of the most dangerous – so we need to be prepared. Thus, adequate training and having the right set of skills and knowledge is absolutely essential – especially in such high risk work.

Training that is nationally recognised and accredited not only enables you to minimise work risks but it ensures you have the right licenses to be doing the job in the first place.

Here are four reasons why it’s imperative to be qualified in nationally recognised forklift training:

1. High risk work safetyThe model Work Health and Safety

Regulations classifies scaffolding, dogging and rigging work to be of a high risk. It also involves using forklifts, reach stackers, cranes, boilers and boom-type elevating work platforms. Candidates that wish to work in an industry that includes high risk work need to apply for a specific high risk work license in order to be qualified.

It’s important to keep up to date with the changes in the high risk work safety licenses to make sure your qualifications are current, and your work type classified under the high risk work section.

In the construction and mining industry,

managing work risk is number one priority. According to Safe Work Australia, there

were a total of 17 fatalities for construction last year and 10 for mining. To ensure that employees have the skills and knowledge to perform high risk work, the value of nationally recognised forklift training is undeniable.

2. Better job opportunities Although the safety of workers is

number one priority, obtaining relevant qualifications – including a forklift license creates better job opportunities.

By increasing employment options, forklift operators gain a real sense of job satisfaction once qualified.

There are two types of forklift licenses available to assist in creating a wider range of job opportunities. LO enables you to only operate an order picker forklift and a LF permits you to operate any time of forklift (expect an order picker).

Because the mining and construction industry both require a nationally recognised forklift ticket to employ you, undergoing the right course for the job will be required.

3. WorkSafe requirements and OHS outcomes

Depending on your location, WorkSafe requirements are in place to ensure better preventative approaches are facilitated in this line of work. In Australia, the

Australian Safety and Compensation Council (ASCC) coordinates national efforts to prevent workplace injuries and deaths, with a specific role to improve Australia’s occupational health and safety performance.

To keep in line with this, training certifications that are nationally recognised need to be issued to all required staff. Rules and regulations are in place to minimise risks and protect both the company and the health and safety of staff.

4. Competency of skills and relevant training

As a worker or employee, you have certain rights and responsibilities to ensure you’re not putting yourself or others in danger.

For WorkSafe and legal reasons in both the mining and construction industry, it’s a general requirement that any person performing high risk work holds a relevant license.

While it’s recommended anyone wanting to break into the industry arranges their own training qualifications, some companies will provide staff with relevant training and completion of your forklift ticket.

In order to be eligible for the license, you will need to demonstrate competency in the safe performance of high risk work under your workplace conditions. Any training, assessments and experience

required by the licensing authority to grant you the qualifications must be obtained.

Throughout a forklift training course, you’ll gain an array of essential skills that can be applied to all aspects of work. These skills will not only strengthen your job opportunities, but maintain a high level of safety throughout the workplace.

Some of these skills will include (but not limited too) safe operation of the forklift, including shut down and secure, identification of hazards and the control measures you should use, assessment of forklift load weights, safest path of movement identification, post-operational safety checks and more.

To continue a high-expertise work health and safety training, your qualifications will be nationally accredited. Whilst the licensing requirements can vary from country to country, obtaining the right skills in your location can provide the perfect foot in the door for other worldwide mining and construction ventures.

City of Gold Coast is advocating for local manufacturers in its role as an Australian Made Campaign Supporter, and calling on other local councils to do the same.

It became the first council in Queensland to form a partnership with the Australian Made Campaign in 2013, and has been working to help support the local

manufacturing industry.The not-for-profit Australian Made

Campaign promotes Australia’s registered country-of-origin certification trade mark, the products that carry it, and the benefits of buying locally made and grown goods.

Australian Made Campaign Chief Executive, Ian Harrison, said the initiative gave Aussie manufacturers a real competitive advantage, because Councils facilitated access to the wide range of resources available to certified Australian Made businesses.

“The City of Gold Coast is proud to partner with the Australian Made Campaign to help farming and manufacturing businesses increase their capacity,” said City of Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate.

“There is a strong marketing campaign behind the iconic Australian Made kangaroo

These days all we seem to hear about is manufacturers in Australia closing down and jobs going off shore.

Well one mattress manufacturer Makin Mattresses is reversing that trend.

For many years Makin Mattresses have sourced components from around the world in order to make the best quality mattresses in their Australian factories.

At the 2013 International Bedding Show in Cologne Germany an English company was displaying a new product never seen before.

The new range has been so successful and popular with the mattress buying public that Makin Mattresses decided to produce the new micro coil sheets in Australia.

Subsequently a machine was purchased and is now in production in our North Brisbane factory.

For each queen size Bellissimo Duo 4000 the machine takes 1.5km of 1mm wire cuts it length and bends the wire into the shape of a spring.

The springs then move down a magnetized conveyor belt until one row

is complete. The row of springs is then compressed and sandwiched between two sheets of fabric. Electronic welding heads then go around each individual spring so that they are sewn or welded into the fabric. In a queen size Bellissimo Duo 4000 there are over 4000 springs. A king size has almost 5000.

Manufacturing companies today face challenges of ever increasing global competition, increased supply chain complexity and shifting patterns of customer demand, compelling them to become more agile, responsive and adaptive through new technologies and process and product innovation.

Plant operations stand at the centre of this strategic change, and are a critical lever for addressing the emerging business technology challenges.

Manufacturing plants need to collaborate seamlessly and efficiently with other facilities as well as supply chain and innovation partners.

However, many manufacturing operations are still largely disconnected, non-harmonized, non-standardized and run on legacy systems with limited appetite and budget to adopt new technologies. The situation calls for a comprehensive approach to transforming plant operations management to develop capabilities for sustainability and growth.

Challenges and opportunitiesManufacturers are faced with multiple challenges

such as economic uncertainty, changing customer demographics, market volatility and complex supply chains.

There is increased competition to meet demand for more personalised products. Manufacturers need to bring customer intelligence to the production floor and drive real-time and predictive intelligence from disparate information

collected from supply chain and production processes.This also presents opportunities for manufacturers

to re-examine their operating models and apply new technologies that have emerged in the areas of social, mobile, analytics and cloud (SMAC) technologies and the Internet of Things (IoT).

boundaries between the physical and the virtual worlds will diminish, particu½larly as IP-addressable and IP-aware devices enable connected, smart factories. Availability of SMAC technologies will take manufacturing to the next level of agility and productivity.

Smart sensors with IoT platforms will generate enormous amount of data around products, people, processes and organizations — what we call “Code Halos.”

Plant Code Halo could be harnessed by using big data analytics to obtain real-time predictive and actionable intelligence for the plant, thereby avoiding costly breakdowns and getting critical insights to improve batch yields.

Imperatives for manufacturing plantsWith increased focus on agility, responsiveness and

customised manufacturing, plant operations need to be

tightly integrated, predictive, lean, and agile and work collaboratively as a “one-plant” ecosystem.

Key capabilities include real-time and predictive analytics to improve visibility, pre-empt failure, enhance resource utilisation and achieve predictable performance. Other areas include reduction in manufacturing and innovation cycle time, and collaborative approaches to share best practices across the plant. These can result in higher customer satisfaction through right product delivery at the right time, optimised resources, reduced waste, and improved regulatory compliance.

Manufacturers are still struggling to integrate and harmonise plant operations with other functions and entities across the value stream. Inefficient utilisation of plant floor data is a barrier to capitalising on the power of new technologies. The lack of system integration between the plant and the enterprise results in a failure to derive maximum value from investments. Manufacturing companies also need to address low-levels of collaboration and non-standardised, non-integrated processes across the supply chain.

Other challenges include technology variance across plants, lack of a common IT programme at a corporate level, and resistance to change.

Transformation strategy The key to addressing these challenges is harmonisation

of operations management and operations technology to align plants with the enterprise. A successful transformation requires:• Buy-in from all stakeholders within the organisation• An approach to align plants with the enterprise vision and define a roadmap for the future state• The ability to address current plant challenges and align with overall vision • A credible partner to achieve overall transformation goals

Manufacturers need a transformation framework that can enable them to achieve an integrated enterprise by strategically aligning technology, processes, and people towards a common vision and goal. Its key components must include a maturity framework to assess the current state and define the transformation roadmap with strategic actions, along with technology services and agile methodology to transform the plant operations management in alignment with the transformation roadmap.

A maturity framework—meant to provide a systematic way to define maturity, along with a specific focus on plant operations management processes—can be used to align vision, key process indicators (KPIs) and process capabilities, as well as define the transformation roadmap.

Some of the key processes that the transformation framework must address include detailed scheduling, experiments and change management, production execution, inventory management, quality management, plant maintenance, energy and utility management, track and trace, quality management system (QMS) and compliance, plant performance, EHS, and so forth. The framework could define maturity across several levels,

from the initial level, at which plants are more reactive, to the top level, at which plants are agile and predictive. Progress toward the highest maturity level typically happens step-by-step, where at each level, certain capabilities generate tangible business benefits. Through progressively improved maturity, plants move toward more flexibility, responsiveness and predictive planning.

Strategic actionsThe strategic actions that the transformation framework

must address include:• Simplify and standardise plant operations management processes: This is a key aspect of transformation, and since many plant operations processes span multiple departments, it is important that multiple stakeholders from various plants as well as corporate business/IT team are strategically aligned. • Improve user experience: The user experience and interface needs to be personalised and responsive to the user’s preference. • Adopt new technology: New technologies in big data space, mobility and social media can elevate plant operational performance and help enterprises to analyse process data and gain insights to improve flexibility, responsiveness and quality.• Integrate processes and enable plants with manufacturing SOA: Integrating processes will reduce the application footprint to achieve various manufacturing capabilities. A manufacturing service-oriented architecture can address specific needs of plant integration and improve agility and responsiveness.• Enable remote operations management: This can help reduce overall TCO of maintaining operations. • Improve collaboration and best practice utilisation: Integrated knowledge management and remote expert

support using screen-share and camera-share capabilities offer organisations ways to take collaboration from concept to reality.• Build predictive and real time operations intelligence: Harnessing plant product and machine Code Halos—and layering these with predictive intelligence—can help plants take proactive actions and improve customer satisfaction, efficiency, agility and responsiveness.

Acknowledging the need for a holistic approach and transformation of plant operations management is a critical first step in enabling this evolution. Manufacturers must align all stakeholders for the transformational programme, establish an understanding of the current state of operations and set goals for the desired state, and develop a project management office (PMO) and core team to manage the program.

Plants of the future Plants of the future will be seamlessly integrated with the

extended supply chain, operating with greater agility and efficiency.

Plants will work as a single ecosystem to fulfil customer requirements. Plant information will be available on the go and operations will be agile to adjust to adverse events within the supply chain. SMAC technologies will become an integral part of operations technologies, aiding predictive intelligence and driving proactive action. Everyone from plant managers to senior leaders will share information and access analytics to improve operational efficiencies. Entries are now open for the biggest sustainability awards in NSW, the 2015 Green Globe Awards.

This is the Awards’ 16th year celebrating outstanding environmental achievements by business, government and community organisations and individuals across NSW.

Entry into the Green Globe Awards is free and winners are determined by an independent judging panel of experts.

This year, there are 17 categories, under three broad divisions: Excellence in Energy, Water and Waste Efficiency, Excellence in Sustainability and Excellence in Leadership and Innovation.

Nominations are open until July 13. Finalists will be announced on September 7 and all finalists are invited to attend a gala award ceremony held at the Art Gallery of NSW in October and hosted by NSW Environment Minister Mark Speakman.

Last year, Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) scooped the Green Globe Energy Efficiency Award for their project titled Retrofitting Hospitals to be more Energy Efficient.

This award recognises organisations that have delivered superior performance and innovation in the development and delivery of clean energy, energy saving initiatives, products and services beyond mandatory requirements.

Glen Hadfield is the Asset Systems and Sustainability Manager for WSLHD and has been with the organisation about 15 years.

He nominated WSLHD for the award after managing a two-year, $6.6 million project to introduce energy-efficiency upgrades to the lighting and cooling systems to Westmead Hospital, the largest health facility in the Western Sydney District.

More than 12,000 light fittings were replaced and a

new motion sensor lighting control system installed. Phillips used the hospital to trial an innovative new

energy dashboard that calculates instantaneously the level of savings being achieved through lighting control measures.

At current levels, 36 percent of lighting energy is being saved by automation on about 4,000 lights in corridors and other public spaces.

The lighting upgrade is projected to save $450,000 a year – money which can be redirected to patient care.

With the new light fittings lasting a significantly longer period before needing replacement, there is also substantial saving in maintenance time and labour.

The cooling system upgrade has resulted in savings of 2,462 megawatt hours a year, representing a 28 per cent saving in electricity consumption, with further savings expected.

Mr Hadfield said the cooling system upgrade, which included new cooling towers, upgrading of all pumps and a new control system to optimise daily functionality, involved the most complex business case WSLHD had ever dealt with.

“Following an independent verification confirming his team’s calculations, the project went ahead,” Mr Hadfield said.

“Attending the Green Globe Awards event was great for industry networking – but also gave me some inspiration and ideas for the future.

“The other finalists also had some very worthy projects and I felt that I learned a lot just watching the awards themselves.”

Mr Hadfield is responsible for maintaining the assets and addressing sustainability issues across five public hospitals and a number of other community health centres in the Western Sydney district. The hospitals are Westmead, Blacktown and Mount Druitt, Cumberland and Auburn.

“It’s a challenging role; there’s over a dozen sites, using a variety of different systems – heating, cooling, communications, water, energy and various other facilities and infrastructure supported by a very wide range of manufacturers,” Mr Hadfield said

“The project was used as a pilot site for the new Office of Environment Heritage Monitoring and Verification

Tool. The results were almost identical, so that was confirmation that both models were effective and accurate.”

Mr Hadfield said that just the process of entering the awards can deliver some real benefits to organisations and he recommends it strongly.

“I entered two years earlier and didn't even make the finals, but just getting all the information together, it’s useful on a whole lot of levels and helps you be on the front foot about your achievements; that’s useful internally too,” Mr Hadfield said.

”Winning the award delivered more than just personal satisfaction – it has enabled leveraging from the project to generate more projects in the district, which will lead to more savings.

“Next on the list is adding solar generation to the site. We’re not planning to be off-grid, but to reduce the intake from the grid, and that will be very cost effective.”

”Everyone in WSLHD is there to support patient care. It's a huge team effort, it's not just one person.

“As with any business, savings in recurrent costs like asset management means more money for core business – in this case, health care.

“Replacing inefficient infrastructure with sustainable

solutions generally saves a whole lot of extra costs you would have had to pay anyway, because maintenance costs are high and then the infrastructure would have become unusable in a number of years, so it becomes a deferred capital expense.”

German car manufacturer Audi has reportedly invented a carbon-neutral diesel fuel, made solely from water, carbon dioxide and renewable energy sources.

The crystal clear “e-diesel” is already being used to power the Audi A8 owned by a prominent German Member of Parliament.

The creation of the fuel is a huge step forward for sustainable transport, but the fact that it’s being backed by an automotive giant is even more exciting.

Audi has now set up a pilot plant in Dresden, Germany, operated by clean tech company Sunfire, which will pump out 160 litres of the synthetic diesel every day in the coming months.

Their base product, which they’re calling “blue crude” is created using a

three-step process. The first step involves harvesting renewable energy from sources such as wind, solar and hydropower. They then use this energy to split water into oxygen and pure hydrogen, using a process known as reversible electrolysis.

This hydrogen is then mixed with carbon monoxide (CO), which is created from carbon dioxide (CO2) that’s been harvested from the atmosphere. The two react at high temperatures and under pressure, resulting in the production of the long-chain hydrocarbon compounds that make up the blue crude.

Once it's been refined, the resulting e-diesel can be mixed in with our current diesel fuel, or used on its own to power cars in a more sustainable way.

Sunfire analyses have shown that

the synthetic fuel is not only more environmentally friendly, but also has superior combustion when compared to fossil fuels. The overall energy efficiency of the e-diesel is 70 percent, they report.

"The engine runs quieter and fewer pollutants are being created," said Sunfire Chief Technology Officer Christian von Olshausen in a press release.

Of course, with the initial factory only pumping out around 160 litres each day, the fuel isn’t going to have a huge impact on the market just yet.

But Audi and Sunfire now want to build a bigger factory, and anticipate that once production is scaled up, the e-diesel will sell to the public for between .70c-$1.05 a litre, dependent on the cost of renewable electricity.

With traditional diesel currently on the market for upwards of $1.10 a litre in Germany, this would make the fuel extremely competitive, and perfectly positioned to made sustainable travel accessible to everyone.

"If we get the first sales order, we will be ready to commercialise our technology", said von Olshausen.

The launch coincides with the installation of Australia’s first solar powered hydrogen refuelling station at Hyundai’s headquarters.

“This is the first zero emissions fuel cell passenger vehicle to be brought to

Australia, and it’s another step towards diversifying Australia’s future transport fuel mix,” Mr Macfarlane said.

“Fuels like hydrogen can help to meet Australia’s transport needs and lower our carbon emissions.

“One of the advantages of hydrogen is that it can be produced from water using a variety of energy sources, including renewable energy.

“These Hyundai Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicles demonstrate the potential of hydrogen to fuel an environmentally sustainable transport option.”

Hyundai has been manufacturing the ix35 Fuel Cell in South Korea since February 2013, the first company to mass produce a hydrogen powered vehicle.

“The ix35 Fuel Cell demonstrates the company’s long commitment to innovation, stretching back to the production of the first Hyundai fuel cell vehicle in 1998,” Mr Macfarlane said.

“The Australian Government supports hydrogen research through Australian Research Council funding.

“The CSIRO is also developing scientific capabilities and new technologies relevant to hydrogen, including research into membrane and separation technologies and the solar conversion of natural gas to syngas.

“This is another innovative example of the economic benefits from the application of science and research to an industry setting.

“We know more Australian industries can benefit from closer collaboration with researchers, to develop new products, new jobs and new export markets.

“The Australian Government is facilitating this type of collaboration through the five Industry Growth Centres which are being established in Australia’s areas of competitive strength, including advanced manufacturing.”

A green technology company, that recycles old car and truck tyres, is attracting worldwide attention.

Green Distillation Technologies Corporation is commercialising its ground-breaking new technology, which recycles old tyres into saleable commodities of carbon, oil and steel.

The company plans to move to full

production with an $8 million upgrade to its processing plant in Warren, Western NSW.

And recently the company won a bronze medal in the Edison Awards, the world’s top innovation award. They were Australia’s first ever finalist in the awards.

Green Distillation Technologies Corporation has operated the pilot plant at Warren since 2009 and the upgrade to full production will see it capable of processing 19,000 tonnes, or a mix of 658,000 mix of car and truck tyres per year. This represents approximately 3 percent of the end-of-life tyres that are generated in Australia each year.

They established the plant in Warren as Denis Randall, the inventor of the process was already established at the site working on processes to recycle broad acre agricultural waste.

Denis is highly qualified in mathematics, metallurgy and chemistry and worked in the petro-chemical in Indonesia for over 30 years developing ways to clean up the

waste in those industries.The switch by GDT to end of life tyre

recycling was a logical move as it is a global problem and gave them exposure to an international market, particularly the US and South America.

Another benefit of the Warren location is that the local community has been very supportive of the venture since day one.

There is also a rail transport advantage as the trains leave Warren with full loads of wheat, wool or cotton so GDT can take advantage of the empty goods vans on the return journey to transport tyres which are light compared to the bulk.

Recycling a typical end of life 10kg car tyre will yield 4kg of carbon, 2kg of steel and 4 litres while a 70kg truck tyre will provide 28kg of carbon, 15kg of steel and 27 litres of oil.

The disposal of old car and truck tyres is regarded as one of the world’s biggest environmental problems.

GDT CEO Craig Dunn said: “We

started in 2009 to prove our technology and the capability of the process, which represents the ultimate in recycling old tyres and more importantly generate a positive cash flow by selling the resulting carbon, oil and steel.

“The oil produced from the GDT process can be used as a heating fuel, direct into some stationary diesel engines or is capable of further refinement into automotive or aviation fuels, while the carbon is a high grade product that can replace those sourced from fossil fuels and the steel is returned directly to tyre manufacturers for reuse,” Mr Dunn said.

“The process is not only emission free but the recycled oil is used as the heat source for the production process.

“It is the only process available in Australia that remanufactures the rubber from old tyres into a different energy form as the other recycling methods merely change the shape or appearance of the rubber.”

A public health report has revealed about 3,000 Australians die each year as a result of particulate emissions – almost three times the annual road toll.

This has prompted Gas Energy Australia to call for urgent government action to displace the use of diesel fuel.

This alarming statistic was published in a 2014 paper by the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health, It’s safe to say there’s no safe level of air pollution.

Gas Energy Australia referred to the findings of the paper in its submission on the Working towards a National Clean

Carmody said the impact of particulate pollution on human health will only worsen if government supported efforts to move away from diesel don’t start now.

“According to this public health paper, in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne alone, another 6000 people would die and a further 20,700 people would be hospitalised each year if particulate matter levels rose to just below the National Environment Protection Measures standards for air quality,” he

said. “We should be transitioning to cleaner

fuel alternatives, such as Australian LPG and natural gas, to significantly reduce harmful particulate emissions and carbon emissions.”

In studies of heavy-duty vehicles, a United States Department of Energy review found that the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), when compared to diesel, reduces life cycle particulate matter from 85 per cent to near 100 per cent (that is, undetectable levels),

emissions of nitrogen oxides by 17 to 80 per cent and emissions of GHGs by at least 16 to 23 per cent.

Mr Carmody said it’s time Australia made clean air a national policy priority.

“Not only is Australia trailing behind with regard to on-road emissions standards, there are no off-road diesel emission standards at all,” Mr Carmody said. A team of Swedish entrepreneurs have partnered with a local energy company to build a revolutionary data centre that runs entirely on a mix of solar, wind, and hydro power, plus wood chip and sawdust waste.

And not only does it take no power from the grid or fossil fuels, it also gives back - converting the heat generated by all those hard-working servers into energy to warm nearby homes.

Construction begins next year, and the facility will be located in the town of Falun, just north of Stockholm. "We are able to reuse all of the energy, all year long," one of the team, Jan Fahlén, from local energy company Falu Power and Water, told Adele Peters at Fast Company. And because cooling the servers down can account for as much as half a data centre’s energy needs, the building has been

designed to convert this heat energy into a cooling system.

According to a recent report data centres currently consume 1.5 to 2 percent of all global electricity, and this is growing at a rate of 12 percent a year.

The situation is so bad, the owners of some of the biggest data centres in the world, Google and Facebook, are being pressured to up their renewable game, and even the US Ministry of Defence has declared war on data centre emissions.

But, so far, no one has come up with a plan as potentially awesome as Sweden's so-called EcoDataCentre.

In a sense, it’s more than just carbon-negative, because it doesn’t just avoid partaking in fossil fuel-guzzling, it helps other facilities cut back on their guzzling activities

too. "As the servers run, they generate heat

that would normally be wasted," says Peter at Fast Company.

"The heat is hooked up to the town's district heating system, sending hot water to warm up local homes in the winter. In the summer, the system can supply district cooling, running air conditioning that would otherwise use electricity."

"This allows us to offer lower costs for our customers, even though it is a high-performance data centre," Fahlén told her,

adding that it will be up to 25 percent cheaper to run than similar top-level data centres.

While the task of hooking this data centre up to the local grid will be relatively easy - it’s going to be built right next to an existing power plant – it would be amazing if technology companies in other parts of the world could figure out how to follow suit.

One thing’s for sure, we’re not going to slow down on our data requirements any time soon, so we need to figure out how to make it less awful for the environment, and ultimately for ourselves.

German car manufacturer Audi has reportedly invented a carbon-neutral diesel fuel, made solely from water, carbon dioxide and renewable energy sources.

The crystal clear “e-diesel” is already being used to power the Audi A8 owned by a prominent German Member of Parliament.

The creation of the fuel is a huge step forward for sustainable transport, but the fact that it’s being backed by an automotive giant is even more exciting.

Audi has now set up a pilot plant in Dresden, Germany, operated by clean tech company Sunfire, which will pump out 160 litres of the synthetic diesel every day in the coming months.

Their base product, which they’re calling “blue crude” is created using a three-step process. The first step involves harvesting renewable energy from sources such as wind, solar and hydropower. They then use this energy to split water into oxygen and pure hydrogen, using a process known as reversible electrolysis.

This hydrogen is then mixed with carbon monoxide (CO), which is created from carbon dioxide (CO2) that’s been harvested from the atmosphere. The two react at high

temperatures and under pressure, resulting in the production of the long-chain hydrocarbon compounds that make up the blue crude.

Once it's been refined, the resulting e-diesel can be mixed in with our current diesel fuel, or used on its own to power cars in a more sustainable way.

Sunfire analyses have shown that the synthetic fuel is not only more environmentally friendly, but also has superior combustion when compared to fossil fuels. The overall energy efficiency of the e-diesel is

70 percent, they report."The engine runs quieter and fewer

pollutants are being created," said Sunfire Chief Technology Officer Christian von Olshausen in a press release.

Of course, with the initial factory only pumping out around 160 litres each day, the fuel isn’t going to have a huge impact on the market just yet.

But Audi and Sunfire now want to build a bigger factory, and anticipate that once production is scaled up, the e-diesel will

sell to the public for between .70c-$1.05 a litre, dependent on the cost of renewable electricity.

With traditional diesel currently on the market for upwards of $1.10 a litre in Germany, this would make the fuel extremely competitive, and perfectly positioned to made sustainable travel accessible to everyone.

"If we get the first sales order, we will be ready to commercialise our technology", said von Olshausen.

Meet ATRIAS, a bipedal robot that's been designed to walk just like a human.

And judging from its first outdoor test stroll, it does a better job of it than many humans, maintaining a pace of 4.8kmh while navigating uneven terrain – and dodging balls that were thrown at it.

Developed by engineers at Oregon State University in the US, ATRIAS is being heralded as the running robot of the future, and is the closest researchers have come to being able to mimic the elastic, energy retention ability of human locomotion.

Because of this, the robot requires substantially less power than other robots – its six electric motors are powered by a battery around the size of a 2-litre container of milk.

"Animals with legs sort of flow in the energy used, in which retained kinetic energy is just nudged by very efficient muscles and tendons to continue the movement once it has begun," said mechanical engineer Jonathan Hurst.

"That's part of what's unique about ATRIAS - not just that it can walk, and will eventually run – but that it's doing so with animal-inspired fluidity of motion that is so efficient," he added.

"This will ultimately allow a much wider range of robotic

uses and potential than something which requires larger amounts of energy."

For its outdoors trial the robot was attached to a safety harness that rolled along with it in order to catch it if it fell, which it did a couple of times due to sensor glitches.

However, the test was able to successfully show that ATRIAS used far less energy than other bipedal robots its size.

"It already appears that ATRIAS is three times more energy-efficient than any other human-sized bipedal robots," said Christian Hubicki, another engineer on the project.

"And this was the first time we've been able to show its abilities outside, in a far more challenging environment than anything in a laboratory."

A crucial part of ATRIAS' development is working out how baby humans, and other animals, input all the sensory information that they get from their environment, and use that to coordinate their locomotion - something that the robot's engineers are still trying to master. But they've already shown that, not only can ATRIAS stay upright on grass, but that they can kick the robot and it'll just keep on keeping on.

While the long-term goal for ATRIAS is to become a stable, running robot, in the short-term, the team hopes that

their research could be used to help build better prosthetic limbs, or exoskeletons that can help people regain control over their legs.

Rod Burton, the Electrical Engineering Manager at Machinery Automation & Robotics (MAR), a leading Australian-based robot integrator located in Sydney, has become the 1000th delegate to be awarded the Certified Machinery Safety Expert (CMSE) accreditation.

CMSE is a collaboration between two international leaders in their respective fields, Pilz and TÜV NORD.

It is targeted at professionals who require a thorough understanding of the safety lifecycle and who actively lead, coordinate and review the more complex and demanding activities in machinery safety.

Rod, a qualified electrical engineer, was proud to be awarded the 1000th certificate.

"I was very interested in becoming a CMSE as machinery safety is at the forefront of everything we do at MAR, Rod said. “The accreditation demonstrates to our customers that we are abreast of the latest safety requirements and my own competence in this area has

been independently assessed and tested.“With this qualification I can now also mentor, train and

guide our engineering team further with safety integration, safety system implementation and of course validation, in confidence."

CMSE has become a standard for internationally certified continuing training in machinery safety in Australia.

In providing this course, Pilz and TÜV Nord are responding to the huge challenges presented by machinery safety both in terms of the standards situation and from a technical point of view. The complexity involved in designing, maintaining and operating plant or machinery has risen significantly, on a worldwide scale.

"CMSE is a great way to demonstrate machinery safety competence in a unique way,” says Scott Moffat, Managing Director of Pilz Australia and New Zealand.

“The qualification deals with complex technical issues, conveying the necessary information about a

machine's overall lifecycle – from legislation, standards and risk assessment to the application of functional safety principles. There is also a focus on worldwide regulations for occupational health and safety, Mr Moffat said.

“With this qualification Pilz and TÜV NORD are filling a training gap in mechanical or electrical engineering. The issue of safe machinery design is usually only addressed briefly during undergraduate engineering courses; and in most cases engineers only acquire the necessary knowledge through their own practical experiences.”

Training is delivered over four days in the form of individual modules containing lectures, discussions, problem solving and practical workshops. The final day is an open book examination conducted by the independent TÜV Nord Group to verify understanding and enable certification.

"We tend to find the CMSE attendees typically have an engineering or maintenance background and are either End Users or Systems Integrators. Most of our attendees have come from the manufacturing, food and beverage or mining industries,” said Mr Moffat.

Those who successfully pass the exam and obtain the TÜV Nord certificate as CMSE® are recognised worldwide as machinery safety experts.

Delegates are not the only ones to benefit, companies do too: they are presented with technically qualified staff who can implement safety across the company. Machinery safety experts are also able to implement tailor-made safety solutions and can share their knowledge with other staff on site. Most of the R&D is currently undertaken in Japan. It

has always been a high focus for Omron. As a result we continue to roll out new innovative products on a regular basis.

Safety and training has also been a strong focus for Omron. Will this remain high on the company’s priority list?

Safety in the workplace is paramount. All Omron products are designed to comply with the strictest safety standards. Companies that do not comply with Australian safety standards now face huge fines. It pays to invest in quality products.

Omron also conducts training programs for its clients to give them a thorough understanding of the technology to ensure they gain maximum benefit.

How important is energy efficiency for Omron?Two years ago I had the pleasure of visiting Omron’s

head office in Japan and inspecting its manufacturing facilities. Omron ensures its processes are energy efficient during all stages of production. The company takes great pride in conserving energy in its own factories and this culture is taken out to the market place.

What are the future trends for manufacturing in Australia?

We are definitely going to see more robots in the workplace and Omron will continue to build on that platform.

Can you identify any opportunities for manufacturers in coming years?

Plenty of people want to tell you that times are tough and getting tougher, but it’s what we have to work with. Some industries such as mining have slowed down following the boom, but other industries such as solar and medical are growing rapidly. Robots are moving out of the cage and into our homes and workplaces, working side-by-side with people as manufactures and companies continue to focus on automation and robotics.

The industrial robotics market is set to grow at 6.9 percent CAGR to $44.4 billion by 2020, whilst the service robotics market is set to grow at 21.5 percent CAGR to $19.4 billion over the same period.

Currently robots fall into two categories, the lighter mobile service robots that are used for simple functions and smart interactive electronic pedestals, or larger stationary

industrial robots with complex physical task capability with little or no mobility.

Rarely are we seeing them with both. While service robots move into our homes and workplaces functioning side by side with people their ability to undertake even the most complex of tasks is becoming commercially viable for both consumer and business landscapes.

A great example of this is ReThinks’ “Baxter” robot. This robot represents a big step forward in affordable technology, which can work with people without risk of injury. He can already memorise a broad range of tasks. However, imagine if Baxter could also move about with the same care and finesse as a person, undertaking different tasks in different locations within your workspace?

This is becoming a reality as Clearpath Robotics announces they will be collaborating with Rethink Robotics to provide Baxter with multi directional mobility solutions reinforcing that mobility is now a focus in the robotics industry.

Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) are another good example of manufacturing

adopting automated applications to consistently and predictably transport loads to locations that might otherwise be serviced by lift trucks, conveyors or manual cart transport.

AGVs are getting more prominent as the need to reduce variances found in human delivery operations increases.

According to Transparency Market Research (Global Mobile Robotics Market Industry Analysis), mobility promises to be the next frontier in flexible robotics.

Kuka Robots believes unlimited freedom is key if we are to bridge the gap between today’s industrial robots and tomorrow’s service robots. (KUKA youBot – promoting corporate science and teaching)

While we can actually replicate much of human mobility most activity within the home and workplace is undertaken on level surfaces making this technology beyond the need of most enterprises.

The current approach to horizontal mobility is to use fixed drive wheels and swivel castors. Although this can be effective on light or less complex robots the inability to move directly sideways or diagonally without rotating limits the use of swivel castors.

Autonomous 360° capability and fluid mobility similar to that of a human will be an essential element in allowing larger more sophisticated robots to work freely and interactively amongst people.

Until more recently the ride quality and load capacity of these types of wheels had failed to provide a viable solution for heavier more complex robots.

Rotacaster Wheel has developed a floor capable omni-wheel and German company Kuka has been doing some amazing things using Mecanum wheels, both opening the door to full 360° mobility for both

industrial and service robotics. These could well be the enablers to this next wave of robotic mobility.

Mecanum wheels are currently more capable of extremely heavy loads, Omni-wheels provide greater flexibility in application as they can both emulate the functionality of a mecanum wheel, while acting independently providing a direct alternative to the swivel caster and ball transfer units offering true freedom in horizontal multi directional movement.

Rotacaster Wheel has recently achieved success internationally with their selection to provide wheels for Festos’ Robotino (Germany), Zuta Labs’ Robotic Printer (Israel) and Esclatecs’ Estel Wheel Chair (Spain).

“It was obvious in the number of AGV manufacturers exhibiting at Promat and Automate 2015 compared to past years, the potential for growth in this sector alone, and the importance of autonomous mobility for robots. This is going to be an exciting space to watch,” said Rotacasters’ CEO Peter McKinnon.

The Sippel Group loves a challenge – and never says no to a client request – no matter how unusual.

After all, they have been moving heavy machinery and equipment for nearly 40 years – with a 100 percent success rate.

But the Sippel team certainly had its work cut out when it was recently asked to move

a 32-tonne World War II Russian T-34 military tank – a job Sippel Group principal Geoff Sippel will never forget.

The tank was being stored in a Canberra workshop and the Sippel Group was commissioned to move it to the nearby War Memorial, where it is now on display.

The T-34 was the mainstay of Soviet armoured forces

throughout World War II. It revolutionised the way tanks were designed and made.

A set of four series AS34-HP Airskates was used to successfully move the war machine to its new home.

“Luckily the turret and gun were very maneuverable which helped considerably with the move,” said Mr Sippel.

And this is not the only tank the Sippel Group has moved. Last year the team also successfully moved a 28 tonne British WW1 Army Tank for a client, using the same set of Airskates.

The inaugural CeMAT AUSTRALIA intralogistics and materials handling show ended in Sydney last month with organisers and exhibitors delighted by the positive industry response.

Based on the well-known CeMAT Hannover, CeMAT Australia introduced innovations from across the globe, including visitors from China, Malaysia, India, Korea, Thailand, Taiwan and Japan.

Mr Wolfgang Pech, Senior Vice President Deutsche Messe, owners of the CeMAT brand, said industry should continue to support shows like CeMAT to drive the industry forward.

Exhibitions such as CeMAT provide solutions that not only deliver return on investment, but also improve the safety of employees.

Mr Pech said many of the solutions on the

show floor deliver time and cost efficiency but they also made employees’ day-to-day work safer and easier.

According to Safe Work Australia one in five injuries in work involved an injury to the back and a typical workers compensation claim includes four weeks absence from work.

“We saw the likes of Dematic demonstrate their new modular goods-to-person (GTP) system, which assists pickers by delivering the products on a conveyer belt for them to pick directly, said Mr Pech.

By taking out some of the physical requirements of this type of work, an

ageing workforce could also be more accommodated.

“Not to mention with e-commerce continuing to be a major force and with more jobs focussed on collecting orders, human error also needs to be considered, so slippage is managed. unload loose loaded containers.Recently released to the Australian market

place, the Destuff-IT ergonomic assist device helps workers prevent the risk of injury when loading and unloading products into and out of containers and trailers.

Destuff-IT has an on-board drive system to move in and out of the containers and has a pivoting conveyor, with a high grip belt. This can be effortlessly guided up and down, left or right to place a product in the desired position and a height adjustable platform puts operators in the best ergonomic position.

The visit, which marked the start of National Reconciliation Week, included a tour of the facility and a BBQ lunch.

The diverse group of students, many of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background, were introduced to young workers engaged in a broad range of jobs

at the new facility.They gave the Year 11 and 12 students

an insight into various different vocations, for consideration when they finally graduate from high school.

These can, depending on requirements, be used in combination with a widely varied range of accessories, such as electrical position indicators, combi switchboxes and/or pilot valves.

Thanks to the diversity of combination options, as well as the technical properties it possesses, the valve can be deployed for a variety of different processes. In this regard, it can be used in applications where an extremely wide variety of different media are distributed, mixed or collected. In particular, the GEMÜ 553 is ideally suitable for the distribution of cooling and lubricating fluids on machine tools. In the mixing function, media with different properties can be mixed together, such as hot and cold water. In the collection application, a same medium is guided in the back flow to a common outlet. In the distribution function, a medium is guided to a variety of

different consumers. With the aid of a universal module, it is possible to integrate temperature and pressure measuring directly into the process.

Further, media can be separated along the pipe train. As a result, it is possible to control the flow of two media or types of media (e.g. liquid or gaseous) independently of one another via the same valve configuration.

Thanks to the possibility of locking the individual connections in place in 90° increments, the valve arrangement can be ideally adapted to the most different of process and mounting conditions. Female threads in G1/2 and G3/4 are available for the connections. The module can be terminated at a desired point through separate connection and blanking flanges. The valve bodies are designed in pressure rating PN 25 and can be quickly and straightforwardly connected together via a threaded connection. TURCK released a new QR24 rotary inductive sensor to expand programmability for industrial applications and improve rotary position feedback for the mobile equipment market.

The QR24 for mobile equipment features a low operating voltage of 8-30 VDC with 0.5 – 4.5 V output.

This technology is immune to vibrations and interference, ensuring accuracy and longevity to avoid replacement downtime and comes in an IP68/IP69K rated housing to protect against moisture and dust in demanding environments.

All QR24 sensors use resistance

inductive capacitance (RLC) measuring technology to process and communicate position.

Each sensor is manufactured with printed emitter and receiver coil systems fully potted within the housing. When the emitter coils are activated with a high-frequency AC field, they produce an inductive RLC circuit with the positioning element. The position of that element is processed based on the induced signal to the receiver coils in the sensors.

For mobile equipment and industrial applications, this wear-free technology is ideal when applied directly to the shaft of a motor to provide superior accuracy for

Without realising it, you are probably using a 3M product just about everyday of your life, both at home and in the office.

Famous for its vast range of tapes, abrasives and adhesives, including Scotch® tape and Post-It® notes, 3M is responsible for 60,000 products used in homes, businesses, schools, hospitals – and the manufacturing industry.

3M is fundamentally a science-based company.As well as adhesives and abrasives this global giant

produces a vast range of products from healthcare and pharmaceuticals to workplace safety and office products, as well as electronics and energy.

3M was founded in 1902 in the Lake Superior town of Two Harbors, Minnesota, when five businessmen joined forces to mine a mineral known as corundum used for grinding-wheel abrasives.

But the deposits proved to be of little value, and the new Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company moved to nearby Duluth in 1905 to focus on sandpaper products.

In the early 1920s the company produced the world's first waterproof sandpaper, which reduced airborne dusts during automotive manufacturing.

In 1925 the company reached a second major milestone when Richard G. Drew, a young lab assistant, invented masking tape – the first of many Scotch® brand pressure-sensitive tapes.

In the following years technical progress resulted in Scotch® Cellophane Tape for box sealing and soon hundreds of practical uses were discovered.

In the early 1940s, 3M operations were diverted into defence materials for World War II, which was followed by new ventures, such as Scotchlite™ Reflective Sheeting for highway markings, magnetic sound recording tape, filament

adhesive tape, and the start of 3M's involvement in the graphic arts with offset printing plates.

In the 1950s, 3M introduced the Thermo-Fax copying process, Scotchgard™ Fabric Protector, videotape, Scotch-Brite Cleaning Pads and several new electro-mechanical products.

Markets further expanded in the 1970s and 1980s into pharmaceuticals, radiology, energy control, office products, and globally to almost every country in the world.

In 1980, 3M introduced Post-it Notes, which created a whole new category in the marketplace and changed people’s communication and organization behaviour forever.

In the 1990s sales reached the $15 billion mark. 3M continued to develop an array of innovative products, including immune response modifier pharmaceuticals, brightness enhancement films for electronic displays and flexible circuits used in inkjet printers, cell phones and other electronic devices.

And in 2013, 3M topped $30 billion in sales around the globe.

From a small-scale mining venture the company has grown into a global powerhouse whose products improve the daily lives of people around the world.

The Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co is now known as 3M, employing thousands of researchers and scientists worldwide.

Today, one third of 3M’s sales come from products that were invented within the past five years.

The company has operations in 70 countries and its products are sold in nearly 200 countries. Last year, the company was awarded its 100,000th patent.

In Australia, 3M boasts sales in excess of $500 million and

employs more than 650 people at 11 locations, including four manufacturing sites.

The company invests about $30 million a year on research, development and technology in Australia alone.

SEW-EURODRIVE has combined the best of two industrial gear unit worlds with its new P-X Series.

Set to launch at Asia-Pacific’s International Mining exhibition (AIMEX) in September, the P-X Series combines the advantages of the planetary gear units and the X Series bevel-helical gear units.

Thanks to the integrated intermediate flange, the P-X range offers compact drives with lower weight and greater stiffness for a torque range between 100 and 500 kNm.

The P-X drives can be used wherever high performance and torque are required in a compact package, for example as drives for bucket-wheel reclaimers, apron feeders, crushers or compact belt drives.

The P-X bevel-helical planetary gear units are available in seven sizes and cover a torque range from 100 to 500 kNm. The gear ratio range extends from i = 160 to i = 550. The P-X Series is designed for high thermal ratings, as it boasts a shared oil chamber and a thermally optimised housing. It can be used at low temperatures below -25 °C in conjunction with heaters and heating mats.

Both sides of the symmetrical invertible housing construction are fitted with inspection covers. The motor adapters are compatible up to motor size

IEC 355 with 500 kW.On the input end, SEW-

EURODRIVE offers the option of various motor adapters with fans, free input shafts and other features. On the output end, standardised output shafts are available as hollow shafts with shrink disks, solid shafts with keys or as smooth models. A solids handling standard (non self-priming) centrifugal pump is now available from Edur of Germany, through their Australian distributor, Hydro Innovations.

The Torque-Flow Bloc series is a close coupled pump range designed for handling waste or process fluids containing solids.

The Edur Torque-Flow series will

handle spherical solids up to 80mm diameter and are available in a range of materials including “gunmetal” bronze, cast iron, ductile iron and stainless steel.

Several sealing options are also available, including single mechanical, tandem or back-to-back arrangements to handle a wide variety of pumped media. Special internal coatings are also available,
