With an area of over 61 thousand square kilometers, the state of San Luis Potosí occupies 3.1 per cent of the national territory and lies in �fteenth place in terms of size in the Mexican Republic.

The numbers do not lie. The state of San Luis Potosí occupies a privileged location through sharing direct borders with seven important states. But, this is not all, San Luis Potosí is also rich in terms of landforms, climate, vegetation…and, most importantly, in human capital.

It has �ve rivers, a wide range of climates throughout its four zones (Altiplano, Centro, Media and Huasteca) and a pleasant average temperature throughout the year lying at around 21 degrees Celsius. In brief, 55.4% of its surface area is covered by natural vegetation and the remaining 44.6% by agricultural land, cultivated pastures, urban areas, areas without apparent vegetation, and bodies of water, among others.

Con una super�cie de más de 61 mil kilómetros cuadrados, el estado de San Luis Potosí ocupa el 3.1 por ciento del territorio nacional y se ubica en el sitio número 15 de las entidades con mayor extensión de la República Mexicana.

Los números no mienten. El Estado Potosino cuenta con una privilegiada ubicación geográ�ca al colindar directamente con siete importantes entidades. Pero eso no es todo, San Luis Potosí también es rico en cuanto a relieve, clima, vegetación…y lo más importante, en capital humano.

Cuenta con cinco ríos, una amplia gama de climas a lo largo de sus cuatro zonas (Altiplano, Centro, Media y Huasteca) y una agradable temperatura media anual que ronda los 21 grados centígrados. En suma, el 55.4% del suelo potosino está cubierto por vegetación natural y el restante 44.6% por terrenos para la agricultura, pastizales cultivados, zonas urbanas, áreas sin vegetación aparente y cuerpos de agua, entre otras cosas.

En cuanto a su gente, el Ingeniero Arturo Ramos Miranda, Coordinador Estatal del Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía en San Luis Potosí, nos platica en entrevista que de acuerdo a la última Encuesta Intercensal efectuada en 2015, la entidad cuenta con 2 millones 717 mil 820 personas, de las cuales el 51.5 % de la población son mujeres y el 48.5 %, hombres.

What is the growth rate in SLP and how many inhabitants are of working age?

With reference to the people, Arturo Ramos Miranda, State Coordinator for the National Institute of Geography and Statistics in San Luis Potosí, tells us in an interview that, according to the last intercensal survey carried out in 2015, the state has a population of 2 million 717 thousand 820 people, of which 51.5 % of the population are female and 48.5 % are male.

The population of the state is growing on average by 1.1 per cent each year and the average age of the inhabitant of the state of San Luis Potosí is 27 years of age.

The working age is considered to be between 15 and 64 years of age, clari�es Mr. Ramos Miranda, who explains that according to the latest report – relating to the third quarter of 2016-, San Luis Potosí has a working age population of 2 million 37 thousand 344 people and, of this number, 1 million 211 thousand and 50 are economically active. 62.4 per cent (755 thousand 798) are male and 37.6 per cent (455 thousand 252) are female.

San Luis Potosí has a strong and growing workforce as, during the last few years, the number of children has been decreasing, whilst the number of adults has been increasing. In evidence of this, in 2010 the population of working age numbered 62.1 %, whereas in 2015 this �gure had increased to 63.3 %.

Speci�cally, in the automotive industry (manufacture of cars, trucks, bodywork, trailers, auto parts) the number of employees rose from 906 to 2 thousand 496 between 2008 and 2013 and the census-based gross value added product grew from 12.8 to 50.2 % during the same time frame.

¿Cuáles son las principales actividades económicas del Estado?

La población del Estado crece en promedio un 1.1 por ciento anualmente y la edad media del potosino es de 27 años.

La edad laboral se considera entre los 15 y los 64 años edad, aclara el Ingeniero Ramos Miranda, quien explica que de acuerdo al último reporte -correspondiente al tercer trimestre de 2016, San Luis Potosí cuenta con una población en edad laboral de 2 millones 037 mil 344 personas y de esta cifra, 1 millón 211 mil 050 son económicamente activas. El 62.4% (755 mil 798) son hombres y el 37.6% (455 mil 252), mujeres.

San Luis Potosí muestra una creciente y sólida fuerza laboral, pues en los últimos años, la cifra de niños ha ido a la baja, mientras que la de adultos va en ascenso. Prueba de ello, en 2010 la población en edad laboral era del 62.1 %, mientras que para 2015 creció al 63.3 %.

San Luis Potosí cuenta con 88 mil 154 establecimientos en total, lo que representa un 2.1% del total a nivel nacional. El 47.2% de los negocios en la entidad se dedican al comercio; 40.9% a los servicios privados no �nancieros; 10% a las industrias manufactureras y 1.8% a otras actividades

En su mayoría, el 95.4% de los establecimientos en el Estado concentran hasta 10 personas ocupadas, 3.6% de 11 a 50 personas, 0.8% de 51 a 250 personas y sólo un 0.2% cuentan con 251 o más.

Como se ve, la economía en San Luis Potosí depende en gran medida de tres importantes sectores: el de servicios, el de comercio y el manufacturero. Entre cada una de estas partes no hay mucha diferencia en cuanto al personal ocupado, pero sí en torno al valor de la producción, pues aunque el comercio y los servicios son mayoría en cuanto al número de establecimientos, el sector manufacturero agrupa a las empresas que aportan más al desarrollo de la economía.

La entidad cuenta con 8 mil 852 empresas dedicadas a las industrias manufactureras, las cuales generan 56 de cada 100 pesos que se producen en San Luis Potosí.

En particular la industria automotriz, (fabricación de autos, camiones, carrocerías, remolques, autopartes) pasó de 906 a 2 mil 496 personas ocupadas entre 2008 y 2013 y la participación al valor agregado censal bruto de la industria creció de 12.8 a 50.2 % en el mismo periodo.


De esta industria, a raíz de la llegada de empresas de clase mundial, las actividades más importantes por su producción bruta, son la fabricación de autos y camionetas con 20 mil 388 millones de pesos; la fabricación de equipo eléctrico y electrónico y sus partes para vehículos automotores con 14 mil 775 millones de pesos y la fabricación de otros productos de hierro y acero con 13 mil 599 millones de pesos.

El ingeniero Ramos Miranda concluye que si las inversiones continúan como se han presentado durante la última década, se esperaría que estas tendencias sigan a la alza, tanto en torno a la cifra de personas empleadas como al porcentaje de ingresos que produce esta industria en el Estado, lo que avizora un futuro promisorio tanto para la economía como para el nivel de vida de los potosinos.

San Luis Potosí has 88 thousand 154 places of business in total, representing 2.1% nationally. 47.2 % of the state’s businesses focus on commerce; 40.9 % on non-�nancial private services; 10% on the manufacturing industry, and 1.8% on other activities.

In the majority 95.4 % of the businesses in the state have fewer than 10 employees, 3.6% between 11 and 50 employees, 0.8% between 51 and 250 employees and only 0.2% have 251 or more.

As it can be seen, the economy of San Luis Potosí depends on a large extent on three important sectors: services, commerce, and manufacturing. Among these three there is little di�erence in terms of the number of employees, but there is a signi�cant di�erence in terms of the value of production, since, although commerce and services make up the majority in terms of the number of businesses, the manufacturing sector brings together the companies that contribute most to the development of the economy.

What are the main economic activities of the state?

The state has 8 thousand 852 companies dedicated to the manufacturing industry, generating 56 of every 100 pesos produced in San Luis Potosí.

In this industry, due to the arrival of world class companies, the most important activities by gross production are the manufacture of cars and SUVs with a value of 20 thousand 388 million pesos; the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment with a value of 14 thousand 775 million pesos, and the manufacture of other iron and steel products with a value of 13 thousand 599 million pesos.

Mr. Ramos Miranda concludes that, if investments continue as they have done during the last decade, these trends will continue to rise, both in the number of employees and in the percentage of income that this industry is producing in the state, meaning that a promising future is in sight both for the economy and for the standard of living of the people of San Luis Potosí.
