Clothing

Traditional clothing in India greatly varies across different parts of the country and is influenced by local culture.

Popular styles of dress include as sari for women and dhoti or lungi for men. Stitched clothes are also popular such as churidar or salwar-kameez for women, withdupatta  thrown over shoulder completing the outfit.

Languages and literature

Sanskrit is the root of all Indian languages.

India is home to hundreds of languages. Twenty three of these are spoken by more than one million people, and almost all of them are officially recognized in another in different parts of the country.

The Rāmāyaṇa and the Mahābhārata are the oldest preserved and well-known epics of India. In addition to these two great Indian epics, there are five major epics in the classical Tamil language —Silappatikaram, Manimekalai, Civaka-cintamani and Valayapathi-kundalakesi.
