NEWSLETTER
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
I will be taking leave from Monday 25 November. Thank you all for your on going support. Working with parents as partners in the education of our students is paramount to achieving high expectations and high care. Mrs McCarthy and Ms Owen will be managing the school in my stead.
NAPLAN
The whole school focus on Literacy has ensured significant positive results. In analysing this year’s NAPLAN results, the staff, and as such the school, have not only met, but have exceeded the targets in the School Business Plan. For example, there has been a significant percentage increase in students progressing from “Satisfactory” to either “Good” or “Excellent” in both English Reading and Writing for Years Three and Five. Whilst the numeracy results were not as significant as the Literacy results this year, the Staff have also analysed, in depth, these results. Areas of focus have been highlighted and strategies have been identified which will be implemented across the school during 2020 to further improve this year’s results.
Board
New Board Members
Welcome to our two new parent Board members.
Paige Goodsell
My son Morrie is in Year 1 this year at Bull Creek Primary School and I work as Deputy
Principal at Bannister Creek Primary School. I have worked in education for the last 12
years and hope to bring some of this knowledge to the Board. I am really excited to be
joining the School Board this year, and contributing to the directions and priorities of the
school moving forward.
Sara DiCandilo I am a parent at Bull Creek Primary School with a son in Year 4 and a daughter in Year 6.
Our family has been a part of the school since 2011 when my daughter commenced kindy.
I am a qualified CPA and have been working as an accountant in public practice for the
past 21 years. I’m looking forward to using my experience as a school parent and P&C
member to represent the parent community at board level.
Kindy Orientation
Thank you Mrs King and Mrs Payne for organising the Kindy Orientation guest speakers
and activities. This program ensures the children enrolled for Kindy in 2020 are well
equipped for success and it reduces anxiety from a child perspective and also the parents.
Water Wise
Bull Creek Primary has been recognised as a Water Wise School for the past 10 years and
the Water Corporation have presented the school with a plaque that we will proudly display.
This links with our sustainability program.
Annual Public Board Meeting
A reminder that the Annual Public Board Meeting will take place in the School Staff Room at 5pm on Wednesday 20
November. The Chair will present the annual report. All parents are welcome. Please RSVP by Tuesday 19 November to the front office if you are attending.
Music Assembly
The Music Assembly showcased our very talented music students. The performances were very
entertaining and polished. Thank you Miss Owen, Mr Marshall, Mr Hofmeester and the
Instrumental Music School Services (IMSS) teachers.
Sculpture Walk
Thank you to Mrs Perna for organising the very successful Sculpture Walk and of course to the
families and students who contributed by exhibiting their sculptures. There were nearly 60
sculpture entries exhibited around the school grounds, which provided a very artistic and colourful
back drop throughout the day.
People viewing the exhibition were asked to vote for their favourite piece and The People’s Choice
Award went to The Fairies Garden by Natalie C (W5) and family, closely followed by Cleo in the
Spring Time by the Hodson family. Well done to all who participated.
It was clear a lot of thought and effort went into all of the creations and we hope to have even more participants involved next year.
Multicultural Week
Thank you to Mr Hofmeester, Frau Colgan and Mrs Watts for organising Multicultural Week. This is
always a highlight in our school calendar. The international food day is a favourite with the students
and staff and the assembly provided us with a glimpse of other cultures national dress.
Congratulations to the students who performed at the assembly including our very talented
dancers. We strive to embrace our cultural diversity and uphold our values of respect and
inclusivity.
Pupil Free Day October 14
The staff firstly participated in a guided walk through Piney Lakes Reserve on the “Bidi Katitjiny” Women’s Trail. This tour of the site provided the teachers with knowledge about a local historical place with cultural significance to Aboriginal people and about the Noongar culture according to the seasons.
The afternoon was spent learning about how the Noongar people lived using the land and plants at Kings Park.
Both sites provide opportunities for our students to learn about the Wadjuk Noongar people and their cultures and support the content in the Western Australian Curriculum and the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework.

SCHOOL NEWS WATTLE 10
Last Thursday, 7th November we participated in Outdoor Classroom Day. It was a day to celebrate
and inspire outdoor learning and play. Along with thousands of schools across Australia we took
lessons outside and prioritised play time. Outdoor learning improves children’s health, engages
them with learning and leads to a greater connection with nature. Play not only teaches critical life
skills such as resilience, teamwork and creativity, it is central to children’s enjoyment of childhood.
With increasing pressures, it’s more critical than ever for children to play outdoors.
We also participated in Nature Play Solutions’ Loose Parts (Junk Fun) Play. Becky and Claire
bought a van of junk and they weren’t going to tell us how to use it. We had three rules; look after
our friends when we use the junk, look after the junk because it’s very special to Becky and Claire
and to stay safe.
These are the responses to what the children liked about Outdoor Classroom Day or Loose Parts Play;
“Playing garbage with the stuff that Becky and Claire brang.” Amelie
“Pulling the rope.” Asad
“The computer and the phone. We were pretending it was real. We were saving problems that hurt
people with Isla and Mia.” Athira
“Taking our shoes off. Because you never let us take our shoes off.” Avaani
“I liked the walking sticks.” Benjamin
“That big water gun.” Branden
“Staying outside all day.” Cooper
“Doing painting. And paint went on my shoes, (points to her shoes) look!” Ella
“Her old trampoline and the cardboard. I made a bus.” Helena
“Going on the trampoline.” Isabella
“Pretending to drive a car. We made it with some blankets.” Isla
“Playing with the water.” James
“Painting.” Lucas
“I liked hiding in the blanket that has buttons at the end.” Mia
“The slidy thing. I was sliding on it.” Olivia
“When I was playing with junk, Isla and Athira tell me spider stuff and I put a net on them.” Oscar
“Everything. Junk, junk. I call it junk, junk. I pretend one of them were surfboards.” Reagan
“The humungous sign.” Rowan
“Playing in the sand pit.” Ryan
“I loved playing with Becky’s junk. I loved the board because I love paddling on them.” Sloan
“Playing pirates with the speed boat.” Stirling
“The driving wheel, it goes like that (shows me steering action with arms).” Tatsuki
“I was standing and then I went to go down.” Thiago
“I liked the net.” William

JUNIOR AND SENIOR CHOIRS This year our Junior and Senior Choirs sang at two of the biggest massed choir events in Australia: JUNIOR CHOIR: ONE BIG VOICE (30th August 2019) The Junior Choir sang at One Big Voice, held at the Perth Concert. We sang on the floor of the arena as part of a 3000 voice choir. Our students learnt ten songs over the year to perform for the spectacular afternoon concert. SENIOR CHOIR: MASSED CHOIR FESTIVAL (20th September 2019) Our Senior Choir sang at the Perth Concert Hall for the Massed Choir Festival. The choir put a lot of work into learning the ten festival songs and the result was a stunning performance combining with nine other schools. Emily was chosen to sing “Space Race” as a soloist. Thank you to all of our choir students who worked hard to learn the songs, and who represented our school in a very professional manner. Thanks also to the parents who put up with the songs being put on repeat at home and for supporting our students at the concert itself. It really has been a fantastic opportunity for our students to perform at world class venues such as the Perth Arena and Concert Hall.
MUSIC ASSEMBLY Our IMSS Instrumental Students performed for our Music Assembly in Week Two. There was a wide variety of pieces played showcasing the excellence of our students. The Junior and Senior Choirs combined to perform pieces from One Big Voice and the Massed Choir Festival. UPCOMING PERFORMANCES 25th November – Parent Helper Morning Tea: Our str ing ensemble w ill be performing to say thank you to all the parents that put so much into our school and community. 5th December – Senior Choir at Bull Creek Stockland Shopping Centre: We will be putting on a show for the shoppers at Bull Creek Stockland. Our Senior Choir will be performing several songs along with a dance group performing the Philippine Bamboo Stick Dance. Everyone is welcome to come and support our choir. SCHOOL NEWS GERMAN
Learning German is fun!
At the end of last term, we celebrated Laternentag. Children displayed their beautiful lanterns, poetry and craft activities in the wet areas. As a highlight of this celebration some very eager students helped to put a wunderbare Assembly together. Thanks to the canteen staff who offered a nice variety of German food.
The Year 3 students listened to the book, Piranhas don’t eat bananas, in German and transferred the knowledge they gained onto a poster.
Once again, the annual German Day Out for Year 4 was a big success. Despite the heat, everyone had a fantastische Zeit. There w ere lots of tolle a ctiv ities on offer a nd students g ot to ea t a traditional Bretzel, some German sausage and to drink an Apfelschorle.

Health
Teachers across the whole school implement the Challenges and Choices program. It is an education program that teaches resilience, drug and road safety.
As a link to that program the Year Fives recently attended an excursion to the Constable Care Safety School to participate in the Safety school experience which included;
Working rail crossings, pedestrian crossings, a school zone with "kiss & drive", functioning traffic lights that can sense approaching bike riders, real roads and shared paths, with scale buildings, even a bus stop and train station (with a full size train and bus!)
The excursion was a well organised and engaging opportunity for all students to practice being safe road users as pedestrians and as bike riders. The students really enjoyed the excursion but the highlights were using the iPad minis and a purpose-designed augmented reality application and of course getting to ride around the course over and over with the teachers and staff that attended.
Smiling Minds
This term we have introduced Mindful Monday’s. After lunch every Monday all staff and students participate in a whole school mindfulness session. This whole school approach will assist in embedding mindfulness practice across the whole learning community. The response to the whole school sessions has been positive and it’s an initiative that is certain to continue.
This term the Smiling Minds curriculum, that is being implemented in all classes, covers topics such as Positive Relationships and Positive Communication.
Positive relationships are developed through promoting listening skills and prosocial behaviour. Our relationships are further enhanced when we have strong communication skills. We model and teach speaking and listening without being interrupted, contributing to discussions, identifying and managing positive and negative relationships.
At home;
Talk with your child about the ways we can communicate (verbal, non-verbal and written).
Practise positive communication by doing tasks together that require mindful listening and speaking. It could be something like taking turns to guide each other through an obstacle course.
If you think your child could benefit from some mindfulness at home give the Smiling Minds app a go. It’s free to download and quick and easy to sign up to.
Values
To end the year we are learning about and practising the value of Integrity.
Integrity is about developing sound moral character. Integrity is underpinned by all the other Bull Creek Values. As the saying goes ‘Integrity has no need of rules’ it simply requires that we do the right thing without question. You can show integrity at school by fulfilling responsibilities without being asked or reminded. You can stand up for a friend if they aren’t being treated nicely because it’s the right thing to do. If you make a mistake you can admit what happened and be honest about it.
