ENSURE CUSTOMERS STICK AROUND30-45 MINUTES AFTER THE GAME

You already know that the longer customers stay in your bar/restaurant, the more you earn. Now it’s time to figure out how to make that happen.

Identifying your target customers and getting them through the door is the first piece of the marketing puzzle. But once they’re in your bar or restaurant, how do you keep them there?

KNOW YOUR CUSTOMERS

IDENTIFYING YOUR CROWDS

Your bar/restaurant needs to appeal to your target audience. If you don’t understand who they are and what they enjoy, it’s nearly impossible to tailor the atmosphere to them. Although your venue may cater to a specific crowd, here are a few statistics that generally apply to most bar/restaurant patrons:

Now that you know a little bit about your target audience, it’s time to look at the three different crowds that you need to appeal to:

The majority of bar patrons have earned a 4-year college degree and have a household income of $50K - $100K.1

While these statistics may vary depending on your specific target customer, they are a good place to start. To uncover a more detailed description of your customers, you can perform your own consumer research with surveys, questionnaires, etc.

Tip: Offer a free appetizer or drink to encourage participation. In the long run, the value you’ll gain from their answers will far surpass the cost of offering a freebie.

PRE-GAME

Give your customers a good reason to show up early and they will. To entice customers to come in early, create a pre-game tailgate that includes special drinks, food, contests, and prizes.

Digital Signage:

Incentives:

Promotions:

Playlist:

Games:

EVERY SUCCESSFUL PRE-GAME TAILGATE SHOULD HAVE:

Designate one TV for advertisements and the others for sports, or switch to advertisements during commercials. Use at least one TV (or more) to feature pre-game digital content that promotes the upcoming game, current food and drink specials, and future events.

Are you incentivizing customer to arrive prior to the game? And by incentivizing, we mean offering pre-game specials like half-priced beers, dollar discounts on wings, or a pre-game trivia competition. If not, it’s time to start. Advertise your incentives via digital signage to ensure customers know about your pre-game offers.

Although it’s in the best interest of your servers to promote your menu and drinks, they frequently take orders without mentioning your specials. By creating special promotions for the pre-game tailgate and advertising them via digital signage, you can guarantee that customers know about the great deals you’re offering.

Customers should be greeted with a demographic-specific, high-energy pre-game playlist the moment they arrive. Use an automated entertainment system to ensure your venue’s music delivers the pre-game atmosphere your customers crave.

Everyone loves to win so why not infuse some friendly competition before the game gets started? Trivia games are one of the best ways to get your customers engaged. Studies show that an increase in sales during pub trivia can range anywhere from 30% to 65%.

DURING THE GAMEAs a bar/restaurant owner, you have three decisions:

If you normally play commercials during the game – stop! They’re loud and add little to no value to your customers’ experience or your business. Instead of killing the atmosphere 2-3 minutes at a time, use digital signage and custom music playlist to keep everyone engaged and having fun.

Stop Offering Checks

Integrate Infotainment

Before the game ends, servers tend to ask customers if they want their bill. They might as well be asking them to go home. Instead of mentioning the bill, your servers should tell your customers about your post-game events and promotions and encourage them to stick around for the fun.

Infotainment is broadcast material that is intended to entertain and inform. During the game, utilize digital signage to let customers know that the party continues after the game. Promote post-game promos and have a post-game playlist ready to go so the moment the game ends the high-energy atmosphere continues.

1. Play audio for the game.

2. Don’t play audio for the game.

3. Play audio for the game, but when a commercial comes on, manually switch back to music.

POST-GAME

When the game is over, don’t let everyone clear out. Instead of playing highlight reels, keep your customers entertained with a post-game playlist that keeps the energy high and the beer flowing.

Offer a prize (like a $25 gift card to your bar/restaurant) after the game and make it a rule that you have to be present to win. This will create excitement and entice people to stay longer.

Pass out coupons after the game. Use your digital signage during the game let everyone know you’ll be handing out $5 or $10 off coupons at the after party that can be used at their next visit.
