The RiverDogs will be looking for their second series sweep of the season and to extend their winning streak to eight games. The teams met in Charleston to open the 2021 season in early May. RiverDogs-Pelicans Season Series in 2021: Overall: RiverDogs 9, Pelicans 2. At TicketReturn.com Field: RiverDogs 5, Pelicans 0. Last Time Out: The RiverDogs won a seventh straight game, knocking off Myrtle Beach 7-3 in game five of the series. The offense didnt wait long to get started, scoring in the top of the first inning on an RBI single from Diego Infante. Myrtle Beach snapped a 23-inning drought and tied the game with a solo home run from Jacob Wetzel in the second. The tie was broken quickly in the top half of the third thanks to a solo home run from Brett Wisely, his fourth long ball of the season. Curtis Mead added to the lead with a two-run single in the fourth inning. A three- run home run off the bat of Abiezel Ramirez in the seventh allowed the lead to swell to 7-1. The Pelicans scored two runs in the ninth, but stranded a pair on base against Angel Felipe to fall 7-3. Winning Ways: The RiverDogs have won seven consecutive games and have a chance to sweep division rival Myrtle Beach tonight. The last time the RiverDogs won seven straight games was August of 2015. That squad would go on to win eight straight. G’Days Mate: Australian Curtis Mead has been a problem for opposing pitching staffs all season. After a quiet opening week, the third baseman has registered a hit in 26 of the last 28 games he has played in. Mead is batting .376 over that same span. He has also reached base safely in 18 consecutive contests, leads the league in doubles, is tied for first in hits, third in extra-base hits, tied for third in total bases, tied for eighth in batting average and tenth in OPS. A Whole Lot of Nothing: The RiverDogs 4-0 win over Myrtle Beach on Friday night was their eighth shutout win of the season. The RiverDogs lead Minor League Baseball in that category. Hudson Valley and Durham each have blanked the opponent seven times. In the Low-A East, no other team has more than three shutouts. The RiverDogs with a 2.89 ERA are the only team in Major and Minor League Baseball with an ERA under 3.00. That’s Gross: Reliever Andrew Gross allowed three runs in his first appearance of the 2021 season back in May. In his ten appearances since, he has not allowed another run. After stranding a runner in scoring position in both the eight and ninth innings on Friday night, Gross has put together 21.0 consecutive scoreless innings, lowering his earned run average to 1.16. Strikeout City: The RiverDogs pitching staff leads the Low-A East with an average of 11.5 strikeouts per game. Starting pitcher Taj Bradley has moved into third place in the Low-A East individually, while former RiverDog John Doxakis still occupies sixth on the list. Roster Refresh: The RiverDogs saw four of their most impactful players receive promotions to High-A Bowling Green on Tuesday. Starter John Doxakis and relievers Colby White and Trevor Brigden, as well as outfielder Hill Alexander received the promotion as the RiverDogs activated Brayden Theriot from the injured list and added Matthew Peguero, Audry Lugo and Garrett Hiott from extended spring training. Doxakis was the Low-A East and Tampa Bay Rays Minor League Pitcher of the Month for May. White did not allow an earned run while in Charleston and struck out 36 of the 60 batters he faced this year. Brigden, who had pitched once for the RiverDogs since returning from a stint with Team Canada, also racked up strikeouts in bunches. He had recorded 25 strikeouts in 11.0 innings while limiting the opposition to a .154 batting average. Alexander was hot over the week before his promotion, hitting .346 with 12 RBI and 8 runs scored over his last 9 games. Prized Pups: The RiverDogs roster contains seven members of MLB Pipeline’s Top 30 Rays prospects. The highest ranked of that group is starting pitcher Cole Wilcox who came in at #9. Outfielder/catcher Heriberto Hernandez is the most highly regarded position player at #13. The rest of the list is filled out by starting pitchers Seth Johnson (#15) and Taj Bradley (#21), shortstops Osleivis Basabe (#24) and Alika Williams (#25) and outfielder Nick Schnell (#30).
