Welcome to our monthly edition of OpenLine,

2017 was a successful year and I am proud of where we are headed as a company. As we close out the year, its time to calculate the profit sharing bonuses for our qualified safe Blue Knights and Ambassadors. Next month, we will pay several hundred thousand dollars to over 300 drivers. This is a lot of money, but these hard working drivers have earned it and we are happy to pay it.

Now, I’d like to announce our Drivers of the Month, Sam Harris and Tom Hoffman and Rookies of the Month, Troy McDowell and Joseph Barrett. Congratulations, and thank you to these terrific drivers for their hard work and dedication. Please also congratulate Daniel Shonebarger, Trucking’s Top Rookie and Top 3 Finalist in the Transition Trucking: Driving for Excellence Award.

We work so hard to be an employer of choice – and really maintain the total package. As a result, we were chosen again as one of Oklahoma’s top work places by The Oklahoman (for the last 3 years). I want to thank all our hard-working employees who made this award possible. I am happy our employees nominated Melton, and when we were compared to the top employers in the state, we were voted #2!

In other good news, we are pleased to announce a new pay for performance program “PRIDE” that will offer the opportunity to earn over 5 cpm quarterly. This will replace the current fuel program that was limited to rewarding just MPG performance.

This generous bonus will pay for superior performance in the Driver Scorecard areas including:1) Safety Performance – CSA, safe, violation and accident free driving, plus Monthly Safety Training completion, and MAC (Melton Advanced Credentials) – Passport Card, Hazmat, Tanker, and/or TWIC.2) Operational Performance - Productivity and on-time delivery3) Fuel Performance and Expert Fuel Compliance4) Shop Compliance – completing A and B services on time

We vow to keep your base pay and benefits strong, but also offer extra incentives for those drivers who distinguish themselves. In addition to the profit sharing for Ambassadors and Safe Blue Knights, this opportunity to earn an extra $5,400 per year is an extra thanks to those who challenge themselves.

We also increased the pay and incentives for our 100 terrific trainers. Now, trainers can make almost $10,000 annually to train newer drivers – but almost all of them say they don’t do it for the money. One of our original trainers and Ambassador Gerald Worth says, “I want to help fill our trucks with safe, motivated, good drivers – and train them right the first time.” If you feel the same as Gerald, please call Safety to apply for a training position. We hope to add 50 additional trainers to allow us to improve our program. The key to our company success is hire, train and retain great talent. It is everyone’s responsibility.

A memo from me would not be complete without a health message. Please follow up on your PHA screening results, and if appropriate, pursue smoking cessation through your doctor or our CareATC clinics. Your life depends on it. For those who achieved ICarePlus standards, you will see your $250 Health Bonus on your January 26th settlement.

As winter continues and weather conditions are messy, I am extra thankful for our professional, hardworking drivers. This job is difficult and demanding and it takes a special person with a strong, supportive family to make it work. We take safety very seriously here. If you are not comfortable or it is not safe to drive, please notify your DM, park your truck and wait for the conditions to improve. Remember to use your anti-gel in your fuel tanks, but do not add any type of winter conditioner to the DEF tank. Stock up at the terminals when you can.

Thank you for being a part of this terrific company.

Remember, drive and work safely.

The driver score card (DSC) was implemented so drivers can review and measure their overall performance in MPG, Safety, Operations and the Shop. This tool is also useful to set personal goals, and audit their Operations, CSA, and internal Safety records at Melton Truck Lines. Each of the criteria is assigned a point value for positive performance like attending safety meetings or getting more credentials, and/or negative performance like receiving tickets or having unexcused late loods.

Drivers can potentially earn up to $1,350 per quarter! That’s an extra $5,400 per year!Questions? Safety #1-800-656-2167 Shop (Brad Bournes) #918-270-9445 Operations (Your DM) MPG (Stefanie Ryan) #918-270-9604

We have revamped the Driver Scorecard for 2018! Driver Kudos

Angie Buchanan send kudos to Michael Smith 10530 for looking after his fellow driver and teaching them how to get things done at Melton.

Kudos to our Extended Coverage members from one of our customers. Charlie called out the excellent service his team consistently receives after-hours and on weekends from Melton’s Extended Coverage Team. He says the Extended Coverage folks are “responsive, reliable, detailed and collaborative.” He really appreciates their attention and responsiveness. Thank you for all you do!

A worker at one of Melton’s customers in Jeffersonville, Kentucky sent us a message on Facebook complimenting Melton’s excellent drivers! He says, “I want to say that your drivers are always courteous and professional. To date, I have never had a bad experience with any of them, which is really something in my line of work where I often run into drivers with attitudes. Just wanted to say thank you and keep up the good work!”

Paige Hackman sends kudos to Harry Cannon, Dane Lemon’s 10922 step father, from Slidell, LA for reading all the newsletters, especially her kudos!

One of our Territory Account Managers, Kendra Lamb, would like to extend her thanks to Ramsey Haynes 10132. She says, “Ramsey has come through for us on several different occasions and has a great team attitude! I appreciate his professionalism, calm demeanor, and willingness to help us retain our exceptional reputation with our customers. Thank you, Ramsey!”

Paige Hackman would like to give a shoutout to Dane Lemons 10922 for being so awesome and kind to everyone. She says “People can clearly see your generosity and willingness to help others. We admire that most about you!”

Maria Valtierra, a member of our Extended Coverage team, would like to send a big thank you to Armando Dorado 10418. She says, “He is always willing to help me with tarping and securing questions on weekends. Armando is super helpful and shows the true meaning of being Melton Blue!”

Sherwood Jones 17020 would like to send a big thanks to Duane Cousins 11486 for his outstanding generosity and consideration! Sherwood was at a shipper when he realized he could not shut off his truck for an indoor loading. To avoid further complications for Sherwood and his truck, Duane stepped in and gladly hooked Sherwood’s trailer to his truck in order to get the load safely. Sherwood says, “He was an awesome individual and went above and beyond for me. Thank you!”

James Griffin 11162 sends kudos to the Maintenance Team for getting his truck in the shop and properly fixed in a timely manner!

Don Trego 9576 would like to send a shout out to Ethan Raggo 10462 for helping a trainee. When Don dropped his trainee off to get his own truck, he left his wallet behind. Don asked Ethan, who was heading for Masury at the time, to help him out in getting the wallet back. Don and Ethan worked together to save time, money, and the expense of replacing everything for the trainee!

Jack Hand 11670 sends kudos to John Hullings 11004 for helping a new Melton driver! Jack received a call from John about tarping a load in high wind situations. Jack offered his advice while John was also helping another Melton driver, Joshua Spring 10612, with the same tarping scenario. These drivers used their respective knowledge to pull together and get the job done correctly. Way to go!

Rate My Load Feature on the Transflo AppBy: Delaney Rea - Employee Services Analyst

We take every precaution to protect our drivers from situations that could arise from unknowingly hauling contraband – from screening customers to performing thorough security inspections of equipment and loads.

Some factors that may lead to suspicion include:• Unusual behavior or requests at the point of loading• Pickup or delivery from/to vacant or abandoned property• Load documentation that does not match company instructions• Cargo inconsistent with the place of pickup or delivery• Monitoring activities at pickup or delivery locations

As the “eyes and ears” of Melton Truck Lines, we need you to contact your Driver Manager, Extended Coverage or Terminal Manager if you have concerns about the security of a load.

After 3 years with Melton, you will receive a custom jacket and truck decal. Drivers with 3 years safe who meet all qualifications also receive profit sharing bonus.

Last year, we coordinated with Transflo to add the Rate My Load survey as part of your load completion process. While customer service is very important, we care just as much about how our customers are treating you, our drivers. The Rate My Load function allows drivers to give us feedback on their experience with the shippers and consignees of every load. Melton will use your feedback to rank our customers and choose loads more wisely for our drivers. You have 2 options to complete the Rate My Load survey.

Complete survey via load workflow process:1. Load is tendered to you2. Accept/Decline options appear3. Select “Accept”4. Load is dispatched or assigned to you5. Scan documents/Done options appear6. 1. Slower metabolism and lousy side effects. With too few calories on board to power you through your daily activities, your body learns to live on less by significantly slowing your metabolism. Short term, you may feel sluggish, irritable and apathetic. Once you stop undereating, it takes a while before your body to recover and your metabolism to rev back up.

2. Loss of valuable muscles and organs. Just because you’ve adapted to using ke-tone bodies doesn’t mean your body won’t need glucose at all. A minimum blood glu-cose level must be maintained to keep you alive so your body continues to break down muscles and organs. It’s a major problem in the long run, because your body doesn’t distinguish between essential tissues (think: heart, kidney, blood cells) and less essential tissues (think: skeletal muscle). Over time, this breakdown weakens and damages your vital organs.

3. Higher risk for nutrient deficiencies. Eating very few calories will also decrease the variety of foods you can eat, increasing your risk for nutrient deficiency. The type of nutrient deficiency that can occur depends on the food(s) that are being restricted. While not everyone who chronically undereats can automatically be diagnosed with an eating disorder, anorexia gives insight on the types of nutrient deficiencies that are likely to occur from prolonged starvation. This includes but isn’t limited to deficiencies in calcium, iron, zinc, vitamin D and the B vitamins, in addition to danger-ous electrolyte imbalances and protein malnutrition.

Everybody is different, so it’s important to experiment and see what works best for you. Just know that undereating is not a good long-term solution for living a healthy life or achieving or maintaining weight loss. Most men need a mini-mum of 1,500 calories. Women need a minimum of 1,200. If you have questions, contact Bret at #918-270-9611.

Our 2018 Safety Campaign is underway. Please like us on social media so you can keep up with what is going on each month in the Safety Department. We will continue to deliver the required training to you in a number of ways, including hotline messages, daily terminal safety meetings, terminal monitors, online training links, email blasts, QUALCOMM tips, and driver manager reinforcement. Please make sure we have an email address for you so you can receive our weekly Safety email. Remember participating in the training is required and will earn you extra points on your scorecard.

This month we will focus on:

CSA Hazmat: CSA is divided into 7 Basics (categories). The hazmat category applies to all carriers and drivers that haul hazardous materials. Carriers are required to train drivers properly and drivers are responsible for complying with DOT regulations during the transport of hazardous cargo. CSA assigns points for any items found during an inspection that are found to be non-compliant. Points are weighted based on severity and time. Points are carried on a driver’s record for 3 years following any citation or written warning.

Some of the most common violations for the hazmat basic include:- Improperly placarded loads- Insufficient number of placards- Incorrect placards- Placards in unserviceable condition- Improperly completed shipping papers- ERG not within driver’s reach

Please contact Safety with any questions. #800-656-2167

Following Distance: Your best “out” is always the space in front of you. This space is also the most abused and ignored by drivers. The safest drivers strive to maintain 8 seconds of following distance from the vehicle in front at all times. An 80,000lb truck at 60 miles per hour will take approximately 250 yards to stop under ideal conditions.

Many drivers establish a following distance they feel is comfortable. Comfortable is not alway safe. Comfort levels vary between drivers, but often they use what they learned in Driver’s Ed, which is a 2-4 second following distance. This may work for a car, but does not provide an adequate stopping distance for a tractor trailer. Professional truck drivers must adjust their comfort levels and expand their following distance out to 8 seconds or more.

Extreme Weather Driving By Rick Vincent, Director of Safety & Driver Training

Driving in extreme or adverse weather conditions, such as rain, fog, wind, sleet, snow or extreme temperatures presents special challenges for drivers. These conditions provide for reduced traction and a less-than-stable platform for your vehicle and, on top of that, your visibility is reduced.

Approximately 20% of all large truck related crashes occur in adverse weather conditions due to the driver failing to plan his/her trip or not getting proper rest before beginning the trip. Obtaining an accurate forecast for the area in which you are to travel is critical! Especially pulling a flatbed!

Below are some driving techniques to help you avoid a collision:• Check the weather forecast• Allow extra time• Do not use the cruise control• Increase your following distance• Don’t make sudden speed or direction changes• Brake cautiously• Anticipate other motorists who may panic and slow down in your travel lane• Slow down

Extreme weather does not cause accidents; your actions at the controls of your vehicle are what cause collisions in bad weather. You must always adjust your driving to meet the conditions around you. The best advice for driving in extreme conditions is to slow down, increase following distance, and stop at a safe location until conditions improve.

As always, thank you all for your hard work on our nations highways in avoiding collisions.

Staying Updated on Winter WeatherBy Pax Rolfe, Safety GeneralistWith the winter season in full swing, it’s critical to remain constantly updated on weather and road conditions across the country. From blizzard-like conditions, black ice, and frigid temperatures, wintertime can turn into a highly unsafe period for drivers. To remain aware and safe, stay up-to-date on the latest either through television programs or your smart phone. Listed below are a few well-known and accurate weather apps to ensure your winter sea-son is safe.
