Strategic Planning Process February 2009 – An agreement on basic beginning
assumptions: • This is a critical historical opportunity in time
especially with the national attention focused on substance abuse in Appalachia.
• It is strategic to take this issue on as a region and work to speak with one voice rather than on an individual agency or jurisdiction basis
• It is important to operate from the collaborative standpoints of policy, data and advocacy because being unified can make difference.
Mission
• One Care of Southwest Virginia is committed to decreasing substance abuse and misuse, and related social, economic and health factors through planning, policy, data, and advocacy.
Vision
• One Care’s vision is to be a model for achieving significant reductions in substance abuse and related social, economic and health factors by building and supporting community partnerships.

One Care Accomplishments 2009-present
• Reconstitution and reorganization of the One Care of Southwest Virginia
• Hosting two advocacy breakfasts annually for state elected officials in Abingdon and Blacksburg, that resulted in ten substance abuse related bills being submitted with the passage of two bills
• Hosting of regional meetings related to support of local coalitions’ efforts in submitting a Drug Free Community Grants
• Hosting of four regional meetings for the collection of data for the development of the One Care of SWVA Blueprint for Substance Abuse and Misuse Prevention, Treatment and Control
One Care Accomplishments 2009-present
• Planning and hosting of six Free Educational Forums on Prescription Drug Abuse – Medical Society of Virginia – Virginia Pharmacists Association – Virginia Dental Association – Virginia Nursing Association
• Submission and acceptance of a Verizon Foundation Grant
• Provision of presentations and public awareness meetings throughout the region
• Established partnerships with substance abuse coalitions, Healthy Appalachia Institute and the SWVA Health Authority

addiction and professionals on the front line
• Collaboration with Vatex’s innovative approach to monitoring patient behavior using the innovative “Divert-X system”
Goals for FY2012-2013 include: • Expansion of four Virginia-based continuing education seminars
in partnership with the MSV outside of our coalition region • Implementation of Goals D, F, H, I and O of the Blueprint • Continuing One Care of SWVA’s efforts in supporting the
existence and establishment of SA Coalitions throughout the region
• Maintaining, enhancing and expanding the One Care of SWVA’s “From the Field” electronic journal and report on substance abuse coalitions
• Improving One Care of SWVA’s visibility in the region with community coalitions, researchers, behavioral health practitioners, state authorities, and federal entities through personal contact, publications, and increasing internet presence
• Continuing the expansion of the www.onecare.org website and Facebook page- www.facebook.com/One-Care-of-Southwest-Virginia
